As museums and galleries in tiers one and two prepare to reopen on Wednesday, we consider what the future might look like for these much loved institutions. Has the pandemic changed their fundamental purpose or merely accelerated shifts that had already begun? What might museums and galleries look like as physical and social entities in ten years’ time? To explore these questions, Kirsty is joined by Jenny Waldman, Director of Art Fund, an organisation currently working to assist organisations in innovating to meet the challenges COVID 19 presents, and museum and gallery designer Dinah Casson, whose new book Closed on Mondays: Behind the Scenes at the Museum is released tomorrow. Screenwriter and director Henry Blake talks about his forthcoming film, County Lines. Inspired by the stories Blake heard while mentoring young people at an East London pupil referral unit, County Lines follows Tyler, a 14-year-old boy who is groomed into a criminal network trafficking drugs between communities. John Mullen has been making the case for re-reading Jane Austen throughout lockdown. Today, it's the turn of Emma. They dig into the story's class satire, the startling chemistry between leads Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller, and their own romantic missteps. Content Warning for discussion of incest, sexual harassment, and relationship age gaps.Clueless was one of the most successful movies of 1995, and also proved to have one of the most important legacies. A modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, Clueless was a comedy of manners for children of the 1990s... or at least those who dreamed of what life might be like if you were that young, that rich, and that insulated from consequences. But does its tongue-in-cheek portrayal of young women and their social lives hold up today? Did the media that came after Clueless and often imitated it, like Cruel Intentions and later Gossip Girl, break from the film's philosophy or merely unearth a darkness that was already there? So is Paul Rudd like her step-brother, and isn't that kind of weird? Danielle, Natalie, and Rob dig into all of it on this episode of Be Good and Rewatch It. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 91 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. turns the attention over to returning guest Kai Yaniz, who has chosen to discuss 1995 teen comedy Clueless. Starring Alicia Silverstone and written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the film was a landmark of 1990s cinema and remains one of the most beloved films of its kind this side of John Hughes. With a remake apparently on the horizon, we take a look at how Heckerling's film serves as a time capsule of its time, creating a unique aesthetic of high school life while updating Jane Austen's Emma for a new audience. Rob and Kai's history with Clueless couldn't be more different, with the latter a longtime fan and the former a more recent convert to the charms of Cher Horowitz, her razor-sharp wit and all the neon-colored 90s outfits. In recent years, films like Mean Girls, Easy A and The Edge of Seventeen have emerged as prime examples of the greatness female-led high school comedies can bring. But could these heirs apparent really eclipse the laughs, heart and indelible performances of Clueless? As if! So let's totally pause and take a closer look at how Clueless holds up decades after its theatrical release. The film's legacy and influence on cinematic history might just surprise you. Topic: CluelessGeek: EmilyWe're back for season three! And we're starting with a bang: the classic teen comedy Clueless. In case you're unfamiliar (somehow?) with this film, it stars lots of famous people and music and features a parade of classic outfits and phrases - and best of all, it's based on Jane Austen's "Emma."Normally I'd launch into how I first watched this movie or why I fell in love with it, but I honestly can't remember the first time I watched it. It's just sort of part of my pop cultural DNA, and I love it to pieces. But did Eric? You'll have to listen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hey, Do You Remember...?

There was a perfect storm of factors that led to Clueless becoming a full-fledged phenomenon in the summer of 1995 - the buzz surrounding up-and-comer Alicia Silverstone, a series of ads that ran on MTV that made the film impossible for its target demographic to ignore, and a subversive style of comedy that perfectly tapped into our mid-90s zeitgeist.  It didn't just resuscitate the teen movie, it redefined it. So pop in your Rollin' with the Homies cassette and join the HDYR gang for a look back at this endlessly quotable gem. Topics include: the project's origins as a TV series, alternate casting choices for a few of the lead roles, the details we can't believe we missed on our first viewing, how much we care about a group of characters that would be the villains in any other teen movie, the film's ties to Jane Austen's Emma and the trend of taking classic works of literature and placing them in a modern high school setting, our versions of being "that girl who fell down the stairs", and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
