We continue our trip through the Jane Austen Extended Universe where we inevitably, finally, run into Hugh Grant. Join Jeff, Angela, and John as they mash up Aristotle, Tom Bombadil, and Bill Belichick in their discussion of Sense & Sensibility!
We're back with another episode of Unpopular Opinions, and this time we're diving into Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. I'm joined once again by Caily, and we have plenty to discuss! We explore the often-overlooked neglect of Mrs. Dashwood—was she truly as supportive as she seemed, or did she fail her daughters? We also dive into Colonel Brandon's mental state—does his brooding nature hint at something more than just romantic melancholy? Is Marrianne a projection of his fantasy, the classic candid girlfriend! Lastly, we dissect Elinor Dashwood's choices: What could she have done differently for a happier outcome? Actor, writer and director, Erin Roth shares her methods in teaching artists and non-artists the techniques of master voice and Shakespeare teacher, Patsy Rodenburg. Learn to breathe with the most ease and to support your body in releasing stress and tension to pursue your purpose. Join me in this episode of Someone Gets Me ▶️ How To Find Your Gifted Voice with Erin Roth. Key point covered in this episode: ✔️ Gifted people hold themselves back. Often, people we find with a tight jaw are those who grew up being told not to say something and trying to hold their truth in. It's incredible what happens when you learn to break that energetic pattern and find safety in expressing yourself. ✔️ Free your gift by freeing your voice. As an actor, Erin trains by working with her body, breath, and voice. She has improved through these methods on herself and by also teaching others. "There's just no separation between the two. I always start on a very practical level, working physically with people on their breath system and freeing their voices. And when I say free your voice, it's freeing it from extra tensions, extra habits that make it hard to communicate or speak…” ✔️ Learn how to be OK taking up the space you take up in the world. Fear will always shut you down. Erin reminds us to learn to be OK with taking up the space you take up in the world. That's a physical, mental, emotional, and energetic thing we must learn to fulfill our purpose. ✔️ If you want to talk to your audience and the people you serve with the most impact, you've got to learn to be present, connect beyond words, and reach their hearts. As a gifted thespian, Erin delights in how live theater delivers so much impact for the actors and the audience. Presence plays a huge part in breaking through invisible walls and inviting people into an incredible connection where we can all contemplate our shared humanity together. ✔️ Mindfulness has become a fad lately, but it's something that will never go away. Numerous studies show tangible benefits, such as relieving pain and addressing anxiety and depression. People are waking up to the power of presence and being in that moment. How do you include mindfulness in your daily life? ———————————————————————————————— Erin Roth is a New York City-based Registered Rodenburg Teacher (RRT), trained and certified by master voice and Shakespeare teacher Patsy Rodenburg. She coaches and teaches in-person and online Shakespeare classes and was one of the first 30 people in the world certified to teach Patsy Rodenburg's method. Erin is a regular contributor to Backstage Experts. Erin is also an actor, writer, director, and producer. Currently, she can be seen playing Lady Macbeth in Macbeth with the Hudson Classical Theater Company. Most recently, she played Jane Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Elinor Dashwood in Sense & Sensibility. Other theater credits include Back of the Throat with the Flea Theater, On the Razzle at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Love of Three Oranges at the Santa Fe Theatre Festival, and Old School Sketch Show at the PIT. As a producer, past film and TV projects have gone to the Raindance International Film Festival and iTV Fest (Now Catalyst). Erin also recently co-directed A Midsummer Night's Dream. Erin is passionate about making Shakespeare accessible, giving actors the tools to do great Shakespeare, and helping actors reconnect to their authentic voice and presence. Erin recently expanded to coaching non-actors in presence, communication, and connection and is launching her first public speaking course this fall. ———————————————————————————————— Connect with Erin: www.erinrothcoaching.com www.erinroth.com www.backstage.com/magazine/author/erin-roth/ ———————————————————————————————— How to Connect with Dianne A. The year is 2009 and the nominees are: 1. Melissa Leo - Frozen River 2. Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married 3. Angelina Jolie - Changeling 4. Meryl Streep - Doubt 5. Kate Winslet - The Reader - In 2009 Kate Winslet FINALLY won her Oscar for The Reader (I say FINALLY because by the time she won she should have already had at least 1 Oscar (probably for Sense & Sensibility or The Tanic')). Originally Winslet wanted to go supporting for The Reader and lead for Revolutionary Road but the Academy insisted on doubling down (no nomination for Revolutionary Road) on The Reader in a lead category. This was one of my favourite years to discuss for this podcast, each performance was incredible in its own way. Anne Hathaway became a first time nominee in Rachel Getting Married playing a manic narcissist who insists on always being the centre of attention. Melissa Leo in Frozen River delivers a gritty performance of a woman who smuggles people across the Canadian border in order to make ends meat. Meryl Streep gives another knockout performance in Doubt as the head nun/principal of a catholic school who suspects the priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of molesting a student. Angelina Jolie received her first lead nomination in Changeling playing the real life Christine Collins whose child went missing and is replaced by an imposter child by the LAPD. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Fiona O'Brien (Saint*) as they discuss.

[Episode recorded 5/15/21] Welcome, gentle listeners, to our review of the 2008 miniseries Sense & Sensibility, written by Andrew Davies and starring Hattie Moran as Elinor and Charity Wakefield as Marianne. While it's not easy to make a new version of S&S with the specter of the 1996 Ang Lee movie in the background, this game adaptation has some enjoyable points, especially with regard to the Willoughby/Marianne pairing. And Maggie is back to share her witty repartee and sing us a song! Note, as usual, this episode has some commentary that is not suitable for little ears. I decided to write a novel called 'Sense, Sensibility and PTSD', which I'd describe as Updated Austen (Jane Austen) X The Silver Linings Playbook. It focuses on a couple with long-term PTSD. Ever since a new actress called Sharon Stone asked to borrow a choker and earrings for the world premiere of Basic Instinct in 1992, Martin Katz has "jewelled" many of the world's most famous actresses for the red carpet. In fact between 1995 and 2000, it was Martin Katz who was dominating the red carpet with his vintage pieces, even bouncing off Harry Winston who had dressed the stars with diamonds for decades. Just after Sense & Sensibility, Kate Winslet wore an Edwardian diamond bib necklace for the 1996 Academy Awards - only months before she started filming Titanic with Leonardo di Caprio. Nicole Kidman wore a pair of Mughal Indian earrings from Martin's estate collection at the 1997 Awards; Angelina Jolie borrowed an Art Deco bracelet from Martin's collection for the 2001 ceremony. In fact Sharon Stone was such a fan that once she even took the jeweller with her down the red carpet! The list of leading ladies who have worn his jewels includes Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, Jane Fonda, Jessica Biel, Sandra Bullock - I could go on! I first met Martin in 2016 at his exquisite boutique just off Rodeo Drive, and was mesmerised by a pair of paraiba tourmaline and diamond earrings amongst other treasures. Today I talk to this brilliant Beverly Hills jeweller, about his journey from selling puka shells to fellow students at college, and his first job at Laykin & Cie in the I. Magnin department store in Los Angeles in 1979 to being on speed dial of the world's biggest stars. On Monday (15th March) the 2021 Oscar nominations were announced - we can only wait and wonder who will be wearing Martin Katz on the biggest night in Hollywood in a few weeks! I for sure will be wearing the paraiba tourmalines - should my sashay ever come! https://www.martinkatz.com

The Dashwood Sisters. Could there be anything more entertaining than these two women? They are as different as night and day and both on a pursuit for husbands. Elinor bears everything with quiet decorum and sense. Marianne is outspoken and seeks the thrills of romantic fellowship with no sense at all. Oh, how I love Jane Austen's characters! Reviews of Sense, Sensibility, & Snowmen (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries), A Christmas Wish (Lifetime), A Christmas Love Story (Hallmark).
What can we say? We're Jane Austen nerds (just like Hallmark, it seems), so of course we were going to do an episode on this movie that aired on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on November 30, 2019.
Join us for Season 2: Episode 41 as we rate & review Hallmark’s Movies & Mysteries Sense, Sensibility, & Snowmen. This movie originally aired on November 30, 2019 and stars Erin Krakow & Luke McFarland. Listen to my awesome guest host and I(yay Claire!!!) as we discuss why Edward has a very strange speech pattern (why are you talking like that sir?), what country (or state) is the “international” couple from, why we don’t just yell “come in!” to anyone standing outside out front door and why oh why is the Christmas market the only place this couple ever visits! Follow us on IG @hallmarkandchill! P.S. Sorry about the audio on this episode! Used the wrong setting while recording (d’oh on me) so apologizes for not being able to hear Claire all that well at certain times!
