Matt, aka the Black Country Vlogger, has chosen the iconic Run Lola Run from 1998 this week. Checkout Matt's vlog here: https://www.youtube.com/@BlackCountryVlogger The production of Run Lola Run was a testament to director Tom Tykwer's innovative vision and determination to push the boundaries of German cinema. Filmed predominantly in Berlin, the movie leveraged the city's vibrant and modern aesthetic to create an urban, pulsating backdrop for the story. Tykwer's use of kinetic camera work and rapid editing, combined with a blend of live-action and animated sequences, gave the film its distinct and high-energy style. The unique visual approach was complemented by a techno-heavy soundtrack, composed by Tykwer and collaborators Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, which underscored the tension and pace of Lola's journey. These creative choices not only shaped the film's unique identity but also aligned with the burgeoning techno culture of 1990s Berlin. Casting was a critical aspect of the production, with Franka Potente taking on the physically demanding role of Lola. Her fiery red hair, a decision made during pre-production, became an iconic visual marker of the film. The production schedule was tight, requiring a mix of meticulous planning and on-the-spot improvisation to capture the dynamic movement through the city. Tykwer's hands-on approach and collaboration with his team ensured that the film's technical challenges—like its seamless transitions between timelines—were executed flawlessly. Released to critical acclaim, Run Lola Run became a breakout success internationally, cementing its reputation as a modern classic and demonstrating the potential of German cinema to innovate on a global stage. Plot Summary: In the 1998 German thriller Run Lola Run, directed by Tom Tykwer, Franka Potente stars as Lola, a young woman who embarks on a heart-pounding race against time to save her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). Manni, a low-level criminal, loses 100,000 Deutsche Marks in a botched money drop for his gangster boss. With only 20 minutes to find the money and prevent Manni from committing a desperate robbery, Lola is thrown into a frantic quest through the streets of Berlin. The film's narrative structure is one of its most unique features, unfolding in three different versions of the same story. Each version explores how small changes in Lola's actions and timing lead to drastically different outcomes. Whether by chance encounters, split-second decisions, or twists of fate, each run has profound consequences, shaping the lives of Lola, Manni, and the people they encounter. The film masterfully blends live-action sequences with animated inserts, set to an energetic techno soundtrack that drives the relentless pace. As Lola sprints through the city, encountering obstacles and allies, Run Lola Run keeps audiences captivated with its kinetic energy, visual style, and themes of love, loyalty, and determination. Marcus speaks with Freddy Macdonald about his debut feature film 'Sew Torn', just screened at Locarno, following a World premiere at South by Southwest. Drawing inspiration from the 1998 German film ‘Run Lola Run' as well as ‘No Country For Old Men' (2007), Freddy speaks on the great fortune of sitting down with one of the directors of the latter film - Joel Cohen - who encouraged him to keep going, and to turn his short into a feature. The conversation also touches on Freddy's experience filming in Switzerland, making a movie with his dad, unconventional shooting methods and practical effects, and the value of creating a short film first that can lead the way to becoming a feature film later.Other topics include the importance of managing expectations, the role of champions in the industry, and the vulnerability of sharing one's work. What Movies Are You Watching?Like, subscribe and follow us on our socials @pastpresentfeature
Franka Potente never became a bonafide movie star after Run Lola Run, but her intensely iconic work in this breakout movie remains awesome 25 years later. Tom Tykwer has had a solid career of his own since writing and directing this video-game-esque flick with the butterfly-effect gimmick. He and future collaborators the Wachowskis were making some of the coolest movies around back then, taking advantage of new technologies, narrative devices and editing techniques. In truth, while Tykwer clearly loves Potente, he doesn't do so right by Moritz Bleibtreu's Manni (and the first part of the man's last name rhymes with "tribe" by the way, not "leeb"). Bleibtreu is a whiny screw-up who needs his dedicated girlfriend to save his life by racing around Germany for 20 minutes to come up with a small fortune. Lather, rinse, repeat. Dave decided this week to give himself a little gift. But even in being selfish for once, he still beered us a kick-ass high-octane time-loop flick for the ages: Run Lola Run. It's a foreign film but don't let that scare you off. there's not much dialogue at all. Just a lot of running, action, being briefly animated, and bumping into people in slightly different ways, leading them to wildly different lives; all whilst trying to get 100,000 Deutsche Marks in 20 minutes. *Run Lola Run © 1998 Liebesfilm

Twenty-five years ago, this high-energy German-language action thriller started to take the world by storm as it was also released in the U.S. becoming an instant cult phenomenon. The story it quite simple: Manny (Moritz Bliebtreu) is a young drug courier living in Berlin who has just bungled an important money delivery.....he's scared and desperate, so who does his call?? Why his Flaming Red-haired girlfriend...the titular Lola played by Franka Potente. She hangs up the phone and starts to....you guessed.....RUN to help him out And run she does....across Berlin running into a variety of different characters whom she may or may already know....and thus kicks off a relatively short adventure which we see play out multiple times over, each version taking off in different directions. As directed by Tom Tykwer (The International, Cloud Atlas) and with a catchy soundtrack loaded with catchy EDM, what results is is one of the more memorable graduates from the vaunted (cinematic) Class of '99!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Reviews of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, The Watchers, The Dead Don't Hurt, I Used To Be Funny, Run Lola Run and more. Plus David Lynch's latest project, Mummy Shark trailer and more Acolyte news. Hilarity ensues.
Finally this Friday (and week), we check in -- as is customary -- with our "Movie Guy," Mike Mayo! Mike talks to John about the European classic Run Lola Run (back in theaters this weekend), as well as the new Guy Ritchie film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
This week on Down to Watch, it's a handy June guidebook for what's going on in TV and in theaters! Dan and Raul find the new TV offerings to be meager so the monthly look forward includes many returning shows and trips to the theater. On the new TV front, there's an NBA scandal, a hyped-up Star Wars series, Jake Gyllenhaal getting into legal limbo, and a look back at the pack full of brats. Out in theaters, the summer starts with a remake of The Crow, a re-release of Run Lola Run, M Night's daughter's first twist vehicle, the first days of A Quiet Place, and a possible hit, man. We also welcome back a mayor, some boys, a bunch of angry dragons, the staff of a tasty sandwich shop, and more! What happens when all three critics on Spoilerpiece have problems with both movies on the docket? Listen and you'll find out! First up is director/co-writer Michelle Schumacher's YOU CAN'T RUN FOREVER (2:26), a wannabe thriller starring Schumacher's husband J.K. Simmons, Schumacher's daughter Olivia Simmons, and a bunch of people who apparently didn't know better than to get involved in this thing. (You *can* avoid this shit.) Then there's BABES (23:55), the new comedy (in air quotes) from director Pamela Adlon, starring and co-written by Ilana Glazer. This thing is getting glowing reviews absolutely everywhere, but not from us. (We saw a different movie, maybe?) Over on Patreon, we yap about a movie we really enjoy: RUN LOLA RUN.
I hate subtitles! We don't really, but that's our new theme for this round. In this episode we talk all things subtitles/dubbing/cc/etc and how they can have an effect on our viewing experience. We jump into things with Run Lola Run, the 1998 German experimental action crime thriller directed by Tom Tykwer. We have seen this one before however as a twist, we turn the subtitles off (none of us know German) and see how much we can still get out of this film.
Sean Comer and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services and in theaters: Waking Life/Run Lola Run/Marriage Story Movie Review! First up is Marriage Story (2019). Then we move on to Run Lola Run (1998). Finally we review Waking Life (2001).Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76
Testimony meeting would be a terrible place for Stephen Carter to talk about the movie that finally made him feel a connection to the atonement. Hint: It has connections to Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and Run Lola Run.

This week, we're back to the unfortunate Nic Cage double features -- this time with our boy Nicolas on either side of the law! First, there's the staggeringly sloppy cop thriller 211, in which Cage plays an aging cop who teams up with his fresh-faced rookie son-in-law and a teenage ridealong to thwart a four-man bank robbery in Massachusetts. It's got the politics and aesthetics of a well-meaning anti-drug PSA, a bloated, poorly staged shootout even at a sparse 80-some minutes. Then, we get real weird with it with Between Worlds, a wild supernatural dirtbag romance with Cage as a scraggly, widowed truck driver, whose fling with another doomed soul (Run Lola Run's Franka Potente) leads them down a road where his dead wife's soul zaps into the body of Potente's hot young daughter (Penelope Mitchell). Marathon screwing and over-the-top garden hose fights ensue, as Cage goes as wild as he can with a film seemingly made for five dollars. The Third Part in our Follow the Non-Linear 90s Trilogy The best way to educate young people in their pursuit of the German language is to watch Franks Potente run. And run some more. Preferably with cool red hair. That's about all that one host remembers from his high school foreign language class while the other host is still airing grievances about his father's lack of an opinion on THE MATRIX... but that's for next episode. Speaking of which subscribe to our Patreon as we read our 2024 book club on the 25th anniversary of the films of 1999 as documented by BEST. MOVIE. YEAR. EVER. by Brian Raftery. This month has featured three of the films from that book and how the 90s loved telling stories out of chronological order. That should be very comforting to any of our regular listeners who try to follow the thread that is our movie grumbling. Watching RUN LOLA RUN now is just exhausting. Enjoy!
