New episode out now! We cover the season two episode of Elementary “Dead Clade Walking”, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as a modern-day Holmes and Watson living in New York City. We talk about this version of the duo compared to the books, and how the characters and their dynamic were adapted to become a CBS procedural. We appreciate the show's treatment of addiction and how it affects the characters in short and long term ways, and discuss how in this particular episode the mystery was almost secondary to Sherlock's struggles and growth as a sponsor. We enjoy the realistic and thought-out mannerisms imbued into the characters, think the wardrobe choices are excellent, are relieved by the lack of romance, and love that Sherlock remains a drama queen. Katy brags again about her single semester of geology, Carrie thinks paleontologists can't be attractive or it's suspicious, Maddy makes a great Lord of the Rings joke no one catches, and Mack shares his fossilization grift. We also reveal our family's version of the Irish Goodbye, discuss the nonsense within but occasional necessity for academia, learn about dinosaurs and their relative time within the geological world, and get judgemental about shallot cutting techniques. Listen for more about learning languages, Sue the T. rex, trepanation as a metaphor, John Noble's filmography, cyclops myths, and the legacy of Styrofoam. Enjoy! On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle, John and special guest Laura Hudson (formerly of Wired and The Verge) watched the 1995 cyber-thriller “Hackers,” directed by Ian Softley and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Fisher Stevens and Lorraine Bracco, with supporting roles for Matthew Lillard, Penn Jillette, Wendell Pierce, Marc Anthony and Felicity Huffman.“Hackers” centers on Dade Murphy, alias “Zero Cool,” who made hacking history 7 years before the events of the film when he crashed 1,507 computer systems and was banned from owning or operating computers and touch-tone telephones until his 18th birthday. On his 18th birthday, he finds himself living in New York with his mother and attending a new high school, where he falls into a crowd of teen hacker. There's Ramon, the Phantom Phreak. Emmanuel “Cereal Killer” Goldstein, Paul “Lord Nikon” Cook and Kate “Acid Burn” Libby, Dade's hacking rival and romantic interest. One night, one of the youngest hackers in the group, Joey, breaks into a supercomputer owned by a large energy company. He is noticed and arrested by the US Secret Service, which is working with the company's security officer. Unbeknownst to the Secret Service or anyone else for that matter, the security officer — Eugene “The Plague” Belford — has essentially orchestrated a scheme in which Joey and other hackers are to be blamed for a virus he created, whose purpose is to extort millions from the company into a private account. Thus begins a race: Belford is desperate to get the only evidence of the virus, downloaded by Joey before he was arrested, and our teen hacker heroes are trying to clear their names and get to the bottom of this conspiracy. Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film HACKERS (1995) - directed by Ian Softley, written by Rafael Moreu, and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, and Fisher Stevens.Teenage hackers discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus that will capsize five oil tankers. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 1990s. It's an acid trip into cyberspace, filled with insane visuals, a killer soundtrack, and unbelievable gender-blind costume design that is currently in fashion now. The film has only gotten better with age as I watched it twice last week and was transported back into time to the mid-90s when roller-blading, skateboarding, phone phreaking, and the Anarchist's Cookbook were the necessary evils of our own teenage wasteland. This film absolutely nails the PUNK in Cyberpunk as it explores the subculture of hacking. It's amazing and it belongs amongst the best in the Cyberpunk Cinema catalog. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Mike Burton is not only the creator and host of Genuine Chit-Chat and Star Wars Comics In Canon podcasts, a great friend and supporter of the show, but he's picked our movie to review for this week, Trainspotting from 1996. Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, was a bold and innovative endeavor that brought Irvine Welsh's acclaimed novel to the screen. Boyle, known for his dynamic filmmaking style, collaborated with screenwriter John Hodge to adapt Welsh's darkly comedic yet harrowing exploration of heroin addiction. The film's production faced challenges in translating the novel's intense and visceral narrative to the screen, particularly in depicting the gritty and hallucinatory aspects of addiction. The casting of a talented ensemble, including Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle, contributed to the authenticity of the characters and the film's overall impact. Boyle's kinetic direction, combined with the pulsating soundtrack featuring tracks from iconic bands like Underworld and Iggy Pop, added an electrifying energy to the film. The production team skillfully captured the gritty urban landscapes of Edinburgh, enhancing the raw and immersive quality of the storytelling. "Trainspotting" achieved critical acclaim for its uncompromising portrayal of addiction, its dark humor, and its visual inventiveness. The film's success marked a turning point in British cinema, and its cultural impact endures, solidifying its place as a seminal work of the 1990s and a defining film of the British new wave. Andy recollects about a friend — that was not sober — who lost his temper, went bananas, and smashed up a windshield with his fists while the car was in motion. This leads the fellas into a discussion about Danny Boyle's drug-fueled film, and how having horrible friends may be the worst habit of all — and the hardest to kick.  'Trainspotting' is a 1996 British black comedy-drama film directed by Danny Boyle and starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald in her film debut. Based on the 1993 novel of the same title by Irvine Welsh. As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week's show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. This was a rough year at the box office for Mr. Ritchie. Both Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy ritchie's The Covenant didn't make their production budget back during their theatrical run. Critics definately liked one movie over the other. And audiences, who did see the films, liked both. We couldn't take on two films in one show without some help. Nate, friend and family member, jumps on to share his thoughts on Guy Ritchie's filmography and help us decide if these two films deserve more attention. If that wasn't enough, we also reveal our 5 best and worst films of the year. Brad followed the instructions. Troy did his own thing. Nate gives everybody a shock with his take on Jackie Chan's Ride On. You are going to get a lot of recommendations from these lists! We also want to take a minute and thank all of you for an amazing year and all of the wonderful support. We are truly humbled by our community and appreciate all the feedback. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant.Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller. DIRECTOR OF "THE SHEPHERD" IAIN SOFTLEY JOINS DAWN: Based on the novella by the acclaimed author Frederick Forsyth, The Shepherd follows the story of a young RAF pilot flying home across the North Sea on Christmas Eve. He finds himself in peril when his radio and electric power cut out, leaving him stranded and running on limited fuel. Just when it appears his luck is about to run out, a mysterious good Samaritan appears above the fog below him and the story takes an unexpected turn. The Shepherd brings to life a much-loved tale that was previously adapted for stage and radio but never before seen on-screen. Written and directed by Iain Softley, the film features Ben Radcliffe, actor and executive producer John Travolta, Steven Mackintosh, Millie Kent, Simon Wilson, Iwan Bond, Claire Price, Simon Lennon, Jack Donoghue, Asan N'Jie, Olatunji Ayofe, and Scarlet Grace. Iain Softley has made a wide range of international films as director, writer and producer. His first film, Backbeat, which he wrote and directed, opened the Sundance Film Festival and went on to receive a BAFTA Award nomination for Best British Film. Iain received Best Newcomer Awards from The London Film Critics Circle and Empire Magazine. His film Hackers, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie in her feature film debut, became a cyber punk cult classic. Other Softley films include The Wings of the Dove, which earned 4 Academy Award nominations and won a number of awards including two BAFTAs, The Skeleton Key (Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt), and Inkheart (Brendan Fraser, Helen Mirren, Paul Bettany, Jim Broadbent). “So be addicted. Be addicted to something else.”Checking in 20 Years Later with Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and BegbyThat's right, it's time to talk about Danny Boyle's legacy sequel T2 Trainspotting. It was a long time coming, and that's even after author Irvine Welsh wrote a 10-years-later sequel called “Porno” to his original novel “Trainspotting.” Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our conversations about the Trainspotting series with a look at Boyle's 2017 film T2 Trainspotting. Here's a hint at what we talk about.First off, what's up with that dumb title? We chat about it a bit and the reasons they named it that, but it doesn't change our opinions that it doesn't work that well. We were a little concerned about a return to this world, but in the end, we felt it worked. That's largely because the people behind it were passionate about it and kept it honest and in line with where the first film ended. That doesn't mean we don't have issues with some of the character arcs. Could Begbie perhaps have learned something in prison and not come out 20 years later feeling like the same character? Could we have spent a bit more time dealing with Renton's health issues? Why did Kelly Macdonald have to be included in what feels just like a cameo? Still, the story largely works. We like the journeys the characters go on even with some of the issues. We're glad that Boyle and Ewan McGregor were able to work past their problems to find a way into this one. And it's great to see Boyle still finding ways to play with his production style, even if sometimes it doesn't quite feel as fresh as it did the first time around. All in all, it's a surprisingly good return to this world. This film follows a rowdy group of twenty-somethings, several of whom are heroin addicts. It not only pushed Boyle into the conversation, but Ewan McGregor as well, who stands out as the protagonist of our film. His journey as an addict who works to break free from the life only to (possibly) settle in a ‘normal' life is the story, but it's the comedy and energy through the film that makes it work so well. The comedy seems to capture the essence of the the lives of this group of twenty-somethings. In 1995 society's lack of technological understanding was on full display when Iain Softley debuted Hackers, starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, Laurence Mason, Renoly Santiago, Lorraine Bracco, and Fisher Stevens. Hackers tells the fictional story of a group of attractive young computer hackers/rollerbladers who are framed in a plot to funnel money from a mining company and now must find a way to clear their names while also exploring young hormones. This flick did not do well and wasn't particularly well-loved. Why are we doing it? Because it was requested, that's why. So…does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent discuss the finer points of tech ignorance as we try to decide if this flick got good, or if it has zero cool.

Douglas Mackinnon is delightfully oblique in his description of Steven Berkoff's on-set behaviour during The Power of Three in this interview in Starburst magazine.
