In episode 280 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Luke Loughlin, and his sister Lindsay Loughlin. We first checked in with Luke in JCIP #244 where we discussed the story of men's mental health platform Men United, whom he was previously a co-founder of. We also discussed his own personal story of being diagnosed with ADHD and a learning difficulty, sexual abuse by a female perpetrator, addiction and suicidality. We then discussed his journey of recovery, using faith as a vehicle for it, getting sober and practicing sobriety, and working on his attachment style. All these positive steps have got him to where he is today. The missing part of the conversation around addiction in the mainstream, and it's one we wanted to cover in this episode is the negative behaviours it causes addicts to do, and how the addicted person's loved ones handle those behaviours and find a path back to a healthy relationship, if that is possible. In this episode with Luke and Lindsay, we discuss their family upbringing and the values their parents instilled in them, the rough tides of Luke's addiction and the sexual abuse he went through which fuelled the addiction. We then discuss the difficult decisions Lindsay and her family made to detach from Luke whilst he was in the throes of this addiction. We then explore the concept of forgiveness, how Luke forgave himself for his actions and understanding his abuse and how Lindsay felt when she discovered the abuse Luke had been going through and the context it provided for his actions and addiction. We then finish by discussing how Lindsay and his family forgave Luke and, together, found a path back to redemption, love and reaching the place they are now in their relationship. Since we checked in, Luke is now godfather to Lindsay's son, Luke's nephew and is giving back to his family and his community through his church, other avenues of positivity and will be starting his own new project in 2025 called 'The Inside Job Project'. The inspiration for the name is because, as Luke says, ‘recovery is an inside job. Change is an inside job'. Recovery only started for Luke when he got honest with himself, owned his shit and self-reflected to discover the trauma he had buried. Once he had done that, he started to produce a change inside that lead to outside changes in his life. In episode 244 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Luke Loughlin. Luke is the Co-Founder of Men United, a platform which seeks to empower men to reclaim control of their wellbeing by nurturing their mind, body, and soul. The platform was set up by its Founder Troy Colmer, who then befriended Luke and asked him to come on board. Troy set up the platform when a friend of his disclosed his mental health story to him and he saw the power of that conversation and wanted to provide that to other men in Canada. In this episode, we discuss the story of Men United and what gap they want to provide in the men's mental health conversation in Canada. For Luke's mental health, he was diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability when he was nine years old. Like many boys who exhibited ADHD traits, especially from working-class backgrounds, he was often labelled as a 'troublemaker' in school. Luke was then sexually abused as a teenager by the mother of his then-girlfriend when he was around 15/16 years old and was also raped by her on one occasion. He came out about the abuse four years later to his parents. Unfortunately, when he went to the police about it, he was shut down and ignored. That betrayal, combined with the abuse caused him to spiral. He began drinking excessively, developed an addiction and began sabotaging his future romantic relationships, friendships and relationships with his family members. He tried to get sober in 2019 but unfortunately relapsed and tried to take his own life. From there, he began a recovery journey, accessed therapy, worked on his attachment style and has taken him to where he is today as part of Men United. We discuss all of these experiences, why male survivors of sexual abuse, especially ones abused by female perpetrators continue to be ignored in the wider conversation and the dark side of mental illness. Welcome back, fellow mutant enthusiasts! As we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the X-Men film franchise, we continue our journey through the groundbreaking series that revolutionized the superhero genre. In this episode, we dive deep into the sequel that took everything we loved about the first film and elevated it to new heights: 2003's X2: X-Men United. Phoenix Clouden of Film Code helps us unravel the intricacies of this thrilling installment, which showcases the continued evolution of both the X-Men franchise and its ensemble of mutant characters. At the time X2 hit theaters, superhero sequels were still a rare breed. And the film leapt back into action with a surprising sense of purpose and depth this time around. Building on the foundation laid in its predecessor, X2: X-Men United expanded the roster of characters while delving deeper into their personal struggles and identities. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) once again took center stage, but the film also granted us a more in-depth look at Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Of course, the film's themes are eerily more relevant today than they were back in 2003. The mutants' fight for acceptance and equality mirrors real-world struggles for marginalized communities, making the film's narrative as powerful as ever. Yet, remarkably, X2: X-Men United balances that social commentary with rollicking action sequences and superhero thrills. Perhaps that's why X2: X-Men United set the stage for future superhero sequels. Even 20 years after its release, fans still hold it in high esteem. So, tune in as we celebrate the legacy of X2: X-Men United and its impact on superhero cinema. Whether you're a long-time X-Men fan or a newcomer, this episode promises an adventure like no other. X2: X-Men United turned out to be the middle chapter in the original trilogy of X-Men films. So join us next time as we discuss the final installment of that trilogy, 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. Remember, we're journeying through 10 films in Fox's X-Men saga. Let's explore the subsequent X-films that continued to redefine and reshape the superhero landscape. Every month the Males-2-Men United podcast will acknowledge a young male who has put forth exceptional efforts to overcome the stresses of life. So often we look at the local news and see stories where young males are not being recognized for honorable achievements; yet there are countless occasions when we can see males either going to jail/prison or possibly being buried for being victims of unfortunate circumstances. M2MU's "Males Who Excel" episodes highlight males who live in (or near) challenging environments, yet still find ways to overcome their circumstances and accomplish great things. M2MU feels when these Males Who Excels get recognized, it may potentially inspire more males in similar situations believe they can excel too! If you know a male (young or old) who would be a noteworthy candidate to be featured as M2MU's "Male Who Excel," please send his message (200 words or fewer) for a chance to have him recognized on a future podcast. I contacted Kate to come and chat to me on the podcast as I was interested in why she started the campaign No Packet November. She started this campaign because of what she saw in kids lunch boxes - so much processed and packaged foods. The campaign is in its 3rd year, and now also has taken on an environmental edge - less rubbish inside our kids, and less rubbish in our environment. Kate lives with her hubby, 3 kids, and lives on a big property in Kyneton with some alpacas, dogs, chickens and more! She shares her insight since having kids, her philosophy on health for herself and her family, how she finds balance - and why she is still probably trying to still find it (like all of us), and also shares some great resources. Kate has an upcoming men's health event in her home Kyneton. The details are: Men United, Thursday 28th March, with guest speaker Jeremy Forbes (from HALT - Hope & Assistance for Local Tradies). The talk will focus on mental health, depression and suicide prevention. It wasn’t so long ago that our hero wandered into a clothes shop in Woodbridge. It’s called 4 Men United. It’s run by four brothers born in Canada to an Italian family with a long history in the fashion industry. Tim likes the place. It’s a much more comfortable place to shop than your average men’s store, usually populated by a hungry horde of ravenous salesman. It’s different at 4 Men. Omowale Afrika, husband to LaToya, and father to Naima and Khairi, was born and raised in North Philadelphia. He attended William Penn High School, and was a graduate of the class of 2001. Shortly after graduating, he enrolled in the Philadelphia Diversity Apprenticeship Program to pursue a career in carpentry. Although the building trades did not provide the opportunity promised by the program, Omowale eventually began to volunteer his time with Men United for a Better Philadelphia, as a community organizer, and advocate against gun violence. His work with Men United led to an opportunity to partner with the School District of Philadelphia during the 2005-2006 school year, and subsequent employment with the City of Philadelphia's – Adolescence Violence Reduction Program. Omowale would go on to enroll in Northampton Community College in the Summer of 2008, and after obtaining an Associates of Arts in Business Administration, he transferred to Lehigh University, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in Business & Economics. Although professionally trained as a CPA, his education has always come from the wealth of walking libraries within the Black community. It is the latter type of experiential learning, that led him to service within the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), where he served as the Division President at the International Head Quarters of the association. In addition to his work as a community organizer, Omowale is also an essayist, and is currently penning his first book in an effort to raise the political consciousness of his generation. In this regard, Omowale considers his work to be an extension of the tradition started by Martin Robinson Delaney, but can also be found in the writings of Marcus Garvey, Harold Cruse, and other nationalist scholars whose production of educational content was largely outside of the academy. In this eagerly anticipated by no one episode, Trev finally plows into the next two Axel Braun X-Men porn parodies, WOLVERINE XXX and AVENGERS vs X-MEN XXX. Stained costumes, strange cliffhangers, and oddly specific comic book references...Trev has seen it all. And we do mean ALL. Are the films worth seeing for X-Men fans, or just average horn-dogs? Listen on, and find out. But first, Trev and Joe take a look at the LEGION trailer that was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con, as well as talk about the character of Legion and how they feel the character can be translated to television. Also, brief discussion on the critical response to SUICIDE SQUAD, the lack of a Cable casting announcement, and more.
