Michael Arden joins the show to discuss the monumental task of bringing The Lost Boys to Broadway and the technical alchemy required to turn a cult classic film into a soaring musical experience. He opens up about his "mad lib" approach to stagecraft, explaining how he utilizes traditional theatrical tools in unexpected ways—like tilting the entire orientation of a set to keep an audience off-balance or ensuring the set moves entirely on its own to make the space feel "alive". Michael also reflects on the high-stakes pressure of bypassing an out-of-town tryout, the "fearless skydiving" energy of his cast during a grueling preview process, and his years-long quest to convince his favorite band, The Rescues, to join him in the theater. The conversation also dives into Michael's deep-seated love for the "visual feast" of theater, tracing back to his childhood days rigging special effects in his garage. He shares how his collaboration with the design team at At Rise Creative allows for a "crash and burn" mentality that eventually leads to the most innovative solutions, from the irising neon boxes of Maybe Happy Ending to the complex verticality of the Palace Theater. Looking ahead, Michael previews his upcoming work on Happy Feet, discussing the challenge of mashing up music and integrating massive puppetry to bring the Antarctic to the stage. Michael Arden is a distinguished, two-time Tony Award winning director, recently honored for Best Direction of a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending. In 2023, he won the Tony Award for the acclaimed revival of Parade, following previous nominations for Once On This Island and Spring Awakening. He is the co-founder of At Rise Creative and has directed a wide range of works, including the 2024 Met Gala and Ben Platt's concert residencies. Beyond his directing credits, Michael is an accomplished performer who has appeared on Broadway in Big River and King Lear, as well as in television and film projects like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Source Code. Jeff and Lufisto kick off Season 3 of the Legends and Future Greats (LFG) show with a status update on Lufisto's "titanium" shoulder recovery and a deep dive into the recent wave of WWE releases. They compare the current state of NXT/Evolve talent to The Walking Dead, meticulously analyzing why athletes like Tyra May Steele and Trill London may have struggled despite their high pedigrees. The duo explores the shift in the LFG format, focusing on Shawn Michaels' need to replenish the roster following call-ups to Raw and SmackDown. The conversation moves from the technical aspects of "professional courtesy" during ring entrances to the psychological drive needed to handle blunt critiques from coaches like Booker T and Kevin Owens. They conclude by breaking down the "phony baloney" of reality-TV-style signings, the importance of "menace" in a wrestler's presence, and a sharp critique of TKO's security failures following a recent fan incident.0:00 – Season 3 Intro / Lufisto's successful shoulder surgery recovery 4:30 – WWE releases: Comparing the NXT roster to The Walking Dead 11:15 – The "Matt Bloom" factor: Why heart matters more than athleticism at the PC 18:30 – Talent Status Reports: Nikita Lyons, Shiloh Hill, and Drake Monroe 24:00 – New Season Format: No points, no teams, just replenishing the roster 28:15 – Meet the Coaches: Kevin Owens' neck surgery and Natalia's Dungeon training 38:00 – Match 1 Breakdown: Nikita Lyons vs. Kelly Armstrong & the rules of "Professional Courtesy" 46:30 – Technical Critique: Snap bumps, leg drop splits, and slowing down the pacing 52:45 – Keanu Carver's Backstory: From college football and DoorDash to fighting with Booker T 1:04:30 – Kevin Owens' Advice: Making your offense match your presence 1:11:00 – Match 2 Breakdown: Kendall Gray vs. PJ Vasser & the origin of the name 1:16:45 – "Happy Feet" and Selling: The psychology of big girl vs. small girl dynamics 1:21:15 – Season Teasers: The "phony baloney" of the Kendall Gray signing 1:24:00 – Wrap-up: Lufisto's documentary "The Selling Stage" and TKO's security failures Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/wrestling-soup--1425249/support.

Peter watches Mad Max: Fury Road for the first time in decades, and Eden — who has seen it at least a dozen times — watches the black-and-chrome edition alongside him. Peter finds the opening act almost too uncomfortable to watch, given its uncomfortable parallels to the current political moment, but gets fully on board the moment the sandstorm hits. They dig into what makes the film a masterpiece of practical filmmaking, why Furiosa holds up better than the prequel, and what it means that George Miller also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet.SHOW NOTESCheck-in / What we've been up to — Eden is riding their cargo bike in 35mph Iowa wind gusts; Peter is heading to Austin for an Intuitive Surgical robotics event. Eden vents about 18 months of accessibility compliance work being ignored by faculty who don't read their emails.Peter's picks — Finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 6 (fun but disposable, and the online fandom's intensity baffles him); finished Season 2 of A Man on the Inside (Ted Danson and his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen falling for each other on screen — highly recommended); Taskmaster Series 21 has started, featuring Kumail Nanjiani. Big metal week — Peter covers a stack of new releases: Slave Machine by Nervosa (vicious all-female death-thrash from Brazil); Too Fast to Die by ArchSpire (potential album of the year if not for Neurosis); new Inferi album featuring departing drummer Spencer Moore; Descent by Immolation; and Master Boot Record's first live album Realtime Execution. Eden's picks — Eden is scrobbling again on Last.fm and shares a chaotic top-four week: Portishead, Rebecca Black (Salvation EP praised as a stone-cold classic), Neurosis, and new discovery Javiera Mena, a Chilean electro-pop artist. Also watched two bad movies with the bad movie crew: Firecracker (notable for a truly unhinged sex scene) and American Cyborg: Steel Warrior ("Children of Men with a $13 budget"). Currently reading a 3,500-page Chinese web novel called Long Awaited Feelings / My Feelings Can Wait. Why Peter struggled with the opening act — Peter found Immortan Joe's cult of worship uncomfortably familiar, given current events, describing it as George Miller predicting how "stupid and gullible people can be." He warmed to the film as it progressed, with the sandstorm sequence being the turning point."A perfect action film" — Eden's framing: not their favorite action film, but possibly a perfect one — no wasted frame, no wasted scene. They've seen it at least a dozen times, and this watch was the black-and-chrome edition, which Miller originally intended before the studio overruled him.Practical effects deep dive — 80–90% of the stunts were practical, shot on location in Namibia under miserable conditions. They highlight the pole-cat war boys actually swinging on moving vehicles, and the real flamethrower guitarist who was instructed not to hold the guitar too high.On the cast — Charlize Theron gets full credit for owning the film as Furiosa. Tom Hardy's near-silent, physically understated performance is praised. Nicholas Hoult's arc as Nux — going from zealot to sacrifice — is called out as the emotional hinge of the film.Frame rate trivia — Eden flags that 50–60% of the film was shot below 24fps, with Miller manipulating frame rates shot-by-shot to control tension and legibility.Furiosa comparison — Eden recommends the prequel but notes its heavy CGI and green screen make it feel cheaper and less embodied than Fury Road. Peter says he's now interested to watch it.The Babe 2 revelation — The episode ends on Eden's genuine disbelief that the director of Fury Road also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet, and a fun piece of trivia: Immortan Joe's actor, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also played Toecutter, the villain of the original Mad Max.

Four hosts. One War Rig. Luke, Chris, returning guest Peter, and special guest Dominic from Talkin TV take on the greatest action movie of the century. Mad Max: Fury Road is George Miller's masterpiece, made 30 years after Thunderdome by a 70-year-old director who embarrassed every action filmmaker half his age. Is this Furiosa's movie more than Max's? Is Nux the real hero? How did Miller make Happy Feet and then come back and make this? Hello, and welcome to another month of Apocalypse Video's look at the wondrous world of Nature. For the month of March, we leave behind the ocean waters and take to the skies to observe the many species that inhabit the world above our heads. This…is March of the Penguins (...And Other Bird Related Films). All month long we'll be discussing everything from penguins - to extravagant plumage in Miami; bizarre worlds filled with talking herons - to the madcap zaniness of Ducks. No feather will be left unturned. In this first installment, we'll join the emperor penguins of Antarctica on their long march to their breeding grounds where we will witness first hand the arduous journey that they undergo every year - a journey across many miles, wrought with danger, but fueled by the love of a mother and father. This…is March of the Penguins.I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we try our best not to drop the penguin eggs are fellow cinephiles and nature lovers Mike, Jackie, and Ryan.Topics of discussion in this episode include the shocking revelation that not all of the penguins in the film were what they appeared to be (or sound like); Ryan takes us down a Happy Feet tangent; and finally, our old friend (Free) Willy pops up to blow our minds…and break our hearts.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. fWotD Episode 2981: Happy Feet (penguin) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 3 July 2025, is Happy Feet (penguin).Happy Feet was an emperor penguin who, in June 2011, arrived at Peka Peka Beach in the Kāpiti Coast District of New Zealand's North Island after travelling about 3,200 kilometres (2,000 mi) from Antarctica. He was one of the northernmost emperor penguins ever recorded outside of captivity, and the second emperor penguin to be found in New Zealand. After arriving, he ingested sand on the beach, mistaking it for snow, and filled his proventriculus with it. He soon became lethargic, dehydrated and overheated and was transported to Wellington Zoo, where he was given a 50 per cent chance of survival. Most of the sand was removed, and he was kept at the zoo for 10 weeks to recover.Happy Feet was released in the Southern Ocean on 4 September 2011, about 78 kilometres (48 mi) north of Campbell Island, at the 51st parallel. He was fitted with a satellite transmitter to track his location, but the device ceased transmission on 9 September, possibly due to the transmitter falling off or him being preyed upon.Happy Feet's arrival and recovery was reported on by more than 600 media outlets worldwide. The event raised the public's awareness of wildlife, and for some time received more media attention than New Zealand prime minister John Key. Named after the 2006 film Happy Feet, which features emperor penguins, he was one of Time's runner-ups for the 2011 Animal of the Year. He was the subject of a children's book written by Christine Wilton, who first sighted the penguin at the beach, and another children's book published by Penguin Books in late 2011.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:53 UTC on Thursday, 3 July 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Happy Feet (penguin) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Salli.

Coaching Youth Hoops dives into why proper footwork is a fundamental and often overlooked skill in basketball, from shooting to defense. In this episode of the Coaching Youth Hoops Podcast, hosts Bill Flitter and Steve Collins discuss the crucial yet often neglected skill of footwork in youth basketball. Collins, based in the Palo Alto area, and Flitter, from Wisconsin, first share a lighthearted exchange about weather differences before diving into the core topic. They highlight that footwork is foundational to nearly every basketball skill, from shooting—where "you shoot with your feet"—to rebounding and ball handling. Collins notes that he constantly emphasizes footwork in practice, stressing its importance by observing how poor footwork can hinder a player's overall performance. The hosts underscore the simplicity and effectiveness of focusing on basic footwork drills for young players. Flitter suggests starting with fundamental concepts like pivoting (off both feet) and proper foot placement when catching the ball to shoot. Collins adds that on defense, teaching "happy feet"—constantly moving and staying light on the balls of the feet—is essential. They connect this to the popular children's movie Happy Feet as a relatable analogy for younger players, though Collins humorously admits it's becoming less effective with newer generations. Both coaches agree that integrating footwork into every drill and constantly checking players' foot placement can lead to significant improvements in their explosiveness, shooting accuracy, and defensive prowess. Back in 2007 making a superhero team up movie was not a sure thing. This did not stop Warner Bros, along with Mad Max, Babe, and Happy Feet creator, George Miller from coming up with the first big super hero team up movie "Justice League: Mortal". A writer's strike later, an unknown cast, and a non-committed Australian government would be too tough a foe for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and friends, and the movie would be lost before a single shot was taken.Join RD as he goes over the script and wonders if we missed out on a potential super hero masterpiece.Download the episode for free.

[School of Movies 2024] Nolan-Vember continues with Christopher's fifth film. Now, you would think, following the momentous success of Batman Begins, his period piece about feuding magicians that remains one of his best tricks to date would have been a stellar success... Wolverine's Hugh Jackman versus Dark Knight Christian Bale, and for the low, low price of $40 million; this is a recipe for insane box office gross from the man who would eventually go toe to toe with the plastic pink lady and save cinema in 2023. However, it garnered a paltry $109m from a general audience who in 2006 would far rather go see The Da Vinci Code, Night at the the Museum and the dancing penguins of Happy Feet (also Borat was popular; my wife). This means the odds are a high percentage of our listeners have not seen this film. We would urge you all to do so at once. Spend a proper evening with a big TV in a darkened living rom with the volume high and intense. This is not a film to catch in ten minute chunks on your phone, nor to pass by at Blockbuster on your way to grab Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector. An atmosphere thicker than a whale-omelette, twin obsessions to be the best conjurer the Victorian era had going, spies, stolen encoded journals, Gothic secrets and tragedy, David Bowie doing a Serbian accent as Nikola Tesla, the wizard on the mountain, murder after murder... this film will stick to you like your shadow.

“How different would our world be if every single person played football and grew up in a damn locker room...” Rex Ryan current ESPN Analyst and former NFL Head Coach We got a treat for you today...or as he would some say a God Dam Snack! In today's episode of The Pivot Podcast in partnership with Fanatics, former NFL head coach Rex Ryan, filling in for Fred who's away in London, joins Channing and Ryan for a conversation we never expected to be so in-depth and captivating. An episode full of humor and humility, this discussion isn't just a football fan's dream but it's one to tap into for anyone who's a believer in people, overcoming struggles and fighting internal battles privately while maintaining a tough demeanor on the outside and never being afraid to go toe to toe with anyone. Known for his brash personality, Rex Ryan has always unapologetically been himself which comes with a lot of highs and positives but behind the walls is a story and journey we can all learn from. From growing up in Canada with his mom to dealing with bullies at school to moving with his father Buddy one of the best defensive minds in NFL history to forging his own coaching legacy to being a dad, a husband and locker room leader, Rex opens up like never-before on all the chapters of his life and the ones still unwritten… As the current NY Jets navigate team controversy, Rex takes us through some of the most pivotal moments for him as a man and head coach sharing never-before-heard football stories, defensive mind, motivational tactics, Hard Knocks moments and answering for some of his questionable choices. The one thing Channing wants to know is, why isn't he coaching now? An answer that may surprise you... Having a little fun, Ryan gets Coach to explain some crazy comments he made about Channing back during Dolphins Jets rivalries as Rex peels back the layers of a three-decade-long coaching journey, recounting the highs of taking the Jets to the playoffs and the lingering regret of never winning a Super Bowl. He breaks down his unique coaching style, as seen on Hard Knocks, and emphasizes the importance of physicality and toughness on the field. Rex also shares a personal side of his story, talking about how growing up with dyslexia influenced his creative approach to the game and his ability to problem-solve as a coach. Tackling some unwanted headlines over the years, Rex addresses his infamous private matters leaking publicly and doubles down on how even to this day he loves his wife's feet and isn't afraid to say it. As we wrap the episode, Ryan strikes a chord and the conversation turns emotional as Rex reflects on the pride he feels watching his son follow in his coaching footsteps, continuing the Ryan family legacy and reveals one regret that still weighs on him now.
