"Mark WahlTURD & the Yucky Bunch" concludes, as the singer-turned-actor-turned-business-mogul and his frequent collaborator, director Peter Berg, leave behind the growing unpredictability of theatrical box office for the apparent comfort and safety (and big paydays) of the streaming world. But even there, you're not entirely safe from the perils of a failed franchise starter, as you'll hear when we discuss 2020's Spenser Confidential, the cinematic adaptation of a popular series of detective novels which already enjoyed some filmed success in the TV world in previous years. So why wasn't this later made-for-the-small-screen effort able to hook audiences in the same way? And, perhaps more importantly, does that even matter to Wahlberg, as his career and interests have shifted in new directions? Join us for our first ever look at a streaming-exclusive movie! In this episode of the show we are finishing our January survey of the professional relationship between Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg and we are doing so with a double bill of Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Over the course of our chat you will hear us debate whether the critics were right about these movies or if they couldn't see the forest for the trees and whether it's appropriate to call these movies "movies" instead of cinematic TV pilots. We also talk about Iko Uwais 80s-throwback as an athlete-turned-actor, dramatic chops of stand-up comedians playing against titans of comedic flair, John Malkovich with hair and much more! Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Vanessa Veselka, whose latest novel is “The Great Offshore Grounds,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. “The Great Offshore Grounds” is an epic novel about two sisters on a quest to find themselves during the upheavals of the current era. It's a detailed examination of feminism, of lives lived on the edge, and of life in the parts of America we hear little about. Vanessa Veselka's first novel, “Zazen,” has just been reissued by Vintage. Published by a small press over a decade ago, it looks at the travails of young adults set against the backdrop of an ever-increasing political violence in America. Both novels are available in trade paperback. Vanessa Veselka, the daughter of journalist Linda Ellerbee, left home at the age of fifteen and early in her life lived the life of a homeless vagabond, eventually becoming a professional musician in the Pacific Northwest, a union organizer, and a writer of fiction. Complete 51-minute interview. Bookwaves Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) is known today as one of the most important writers of detective fiction during the final quarter of the 20th Century. His wise cracking Boston private eye, Spenser, Spenser's sidekick Hawk, and girlfriend Susan Silverman have become iconic figures. When Parker died at the age of 77 in 2010, 38 Spenser novels had been published. Two more came out posthumously, and a third was completed by his agent. Novelist Ace Atkins has now written nine more Spenser novels. The series Spenser for Hire, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks ran for three seasons, and Brooks had a spin-off that ran for half a season, A Man Called Hawk. Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. Parker was on tour for his novel, Early Autumn, and marked the first Probabilities interview with a mystery writer. His career hadn't advanced under his first publisher, Houghton-Mifflin, and he switched to Delacorte, and Parker's audience began to grow. This was his seventh Spenser novel, and his eighth over all (Wilderness had come out late in 1980 and Looking for Rachel Wallace was his first under the new contract. At the time of the interview, his first five novels were all out of print in paperback. Though he says in the interview his detective fiction would be limited to the Spenser series, eventually he branched out to write another series of nine books featuring Jesse Stone, a former LAPD detective who becomes the police chief in a small New Enngland town, and six novels featuring Sunny Randall, a female detective. Eventually there was some crossover between the three series. Along the way, he also wrote a handful of westerns, the Cole and Hitch series, and two books featuring Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlow. When Parker died in 2010 of a sudden heart attack, the family decided to let other writers continue the Spenser, Stone and western series, which go on to this day. Complete 40-minute Interview. Full article here… According to a recent report from Omdia research only 350,000 8K TVs were shipped to dealers worldwide in 2021, which amounts to only 1.5% of total TV shipments. With Samsung offering the most models, 65% of the 250,000 were from them. What is interesting is that according to the report, Samsung didn't ship any 8K TVs to Japan. What makes this significant is that Japan is the only country that actually offers 8K TV broadcasts on a limited basis. By the end of 2022, the number of 8K TV households is expected to break down as follows: REGION NUMBER OF 8K TV HOUSEHOLDS Western Europe 305,000 North America 269,000 China 244,000 Asia and Oceania 121,000 Eastern Europe 115,000 Japan 48,000 Latin America and the Caribbean 43,000 The Middle East and Africa 37,000 World Total 1,181,000 The following factors affect 8K TV Adoption: Although almost all TVs on store shelves 43-inches and larger are 4K UHD TVs, there are still millions of consumers that own 1080p Full HD sets and most of the content they are watching is HD and not even 4K. Although 8K TVs work with content sources currently available and perform upscaling of 4K content, to take full advantage of an 8K TV you need access to content that has been made in native 8K. To date, there is very little content to justify the purchase of an 8K TV. Even though 8K TVs offer more pixels per inch, it's nearly impossible to notice an improvement in picture quality unless seated within a few feet from the screen. Our eyes simply can't resolve 8K resolution at a real world seating distances. In terms of streaming in 8K only YouTube, Vimeo, and a few other apps offer any 8K content and it is very limited. To stream 8K you need upwards of 50 Mbps or higher broadband speed. There is no 8K TV broadcasting (except in Japan as mentioned previously). The ability to broadcast in 4K is still slowly being rolled out in the U.S. 8K TV broadcasting is a long way off. Movie and TV studios don't have an end-to-end 8K production and distribution capability of any consequence. Also, movie theater projectors currently in use are either 2K or 4K. This means that there is no incentive to make movies in 8K. It has been indicated that the current UHD Blu-ray Disc format will be the last disc-based format available. There are no plans to make an 8K disc format available to consumers. Although some PC and console gaming platforms are starting to include 8K gaming capability, there aren't a significant number of 8K games being released.

Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview, hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. The recording was digitized, remastered and re-edited in November 2021. The post The Probabilities Archive: Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), the early Spenser novels, 1981 appeared first on KPFA.
There are many creatives in The Hub and to say that we can touch all of them being a once weekly platform may be a stretch. However, there are talents that are hard to be ignored and we always want to give credit where it's due. This week we welcome the South End native, who wears many hats as a former rapper, actor, comedian, healer, farmer and more, Manloz Juice! The young King pulls up to share his story and tell us why we should all "Love The Ugly." If you've watched the action comedy "Spenser Confidential", you may recognize Manloz Juice acting as one of the gangsters from the infamous Dominican "Trinitario" gang. As that film was released last year during the pandemic, anyone from the city who is a part of Manloz Juice's social media following went crazy to see him in a major film starring Mark Wahlberg & Winston Duke. This sparked some curiosity in our team and we started to look into his work which led to this sit down. Join Charlie MaSheen & KASH as they talk to Manloz Juice about his role in Spenser Confidential, his brand "Love The Ugly", his experience in farming, why he decided to remain abstinent, and SO MUCH MORE! STAY TUNE FOR WHAT THIS YOU ENTREPRENEUR HAS IN STORE, WE'RE SURE HE'LL SURPRISE US ALL!! CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR CONTENT: http://www.linktr.ee/CWTFBradio
This week the fellas watched Spenser Confidential, a movie that refuses to let you forget that it takes place in Boston. Directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger, and Bokeem Woodbine. Sadly not featuring, Wahlberg's burger joint, which is a poor choice.
Iliza Shlesinger (Good On Paper, Unveiled, Spenser Confidential) is a keen-eyed observer of life, and she beautifully showcases her worldview in her new hit film, Good On Paper. We chat about where the character of Andrea diverges from Iliza herself, how close she is to becoming a cult leader, and why her story has connected with so many people. Acting isn't a new thing for Iliza Shlesinger. As she told us on Collider Ladies Night, “I've been auditioning at a really high level for a very long time.” It looks like that persistence is paying off because her film career is taking off in a very big way right now. She starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in 2020's Spenser Confidential, shared the screen with Vanessa Kirby and Ellen Burstyn in the Academy Award nominated Pieces of a Woman, and now she's celebrating the release of a new Netflix movie she wrote, executive produced and stars in, Good on Paper. Inspired by her own true experience, Shlesinger leads Good on Paper as Andrea Singer, a stand-up comic who's always prioritized her career. However, when she meets a guy (Ryan Hansen) who seems to check all the boxes, Andrea starts to think it might be time to give a relationship a go. But the big question is, is this guy really everything he appears to be? With Good on Paper now available to watch on Netflix, Shlesinger joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to recap how she went from Last Comic Standing winner to headlining her own feature film.
