Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We are staying in the Softball world this week - today's guest comes to us expressly recommended by TPP alum Jamie Henk (ep.85) and when Coach Henk talks we listen! We've also got a Team Player Podcast 1st today, as our guest is our first one who is currently serving as both the Head Softball Coach AND Head Principal of Liberty High School! Welcome Karen Slack to the show! - Growing up in Cajun Country, the small town of Jeanerette outside of Lafayette, LA with sugar cane fields and crawfish ponds all around you. It was in 5th grade however that Karen moved to Liberty, and she's been in love with that community ever since. - Coach explains what is was like playing on the 1st ever Liberty High School Softball Team when the sport was offered for the 1st time in 1995, and describes how when she started at UH that there was no softball team. It seems crazy now given the extreme popularity of softball at the college and high school levels but Softball didn't even start at a major university like Texas until 1998. - Karen is an outlier in that she is a coach who has ascended to the highest levels of leadership academically as well. During the course of her storied career she has advanced to serve as both a Department Chair and is currently serving as Head Softball Coach and Head Principal! We discuss how oftentimes coaches get a bad wrap in the classroom, but how in order to be a great coach you really need to be a great teacher, and how she has found that coaches are often amongst the best classroom teachers on her staff, and how there are some excellent classroom-only teachers that she would add to her coaching staff any day! - Karen isn't our 1st TPP alum to win a state championship, heck she isn't our 1st to win multiple championships as Jessica Tully-Mitchell Bragg won 2 state volleyball championships at Denton Calvary Academy. But she is our first to win THREE state titles bringing home the gold in 2018 as well as back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023! Coach tells us what has gone into the tremendous success of late at Liberty High School. - Finally as someone who has dedicated their entire adult life to her beloved Liberty High School, we are treated to Coach Karen Slack's all-time Liberty Panther Softball Mt. Rushmore!! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. This is what moves us up the rankings so more people can hear the stories of coaches changing lives Follow on Twitter @coach_kovo Hit us up at teamplayerpodcast@gmail.com - we lift up our own inside Team Player Nation, all guest suggestions/feedback is welcome! Jeanerette defeats Morgan City 26-6 - Interviews with Coaches CC Paul & Aaron Myers

Jeanerette defeated Morgan City on Sept 10th (game moved to Loreauville due to a sloppy field at Jeanerette due to rainy weather. KBZE's Neal McClelland interviewed Jeanerette Head Football Coach CC Paul and Morgan City Head Football Coach Aaron Myers.  McClelland also penned the article below, for the Daily Iberian  LOREAUVILLE - According to Jeanerette football coach C.C. Paul, Saturday's 26-6 win over Morgan City was a good performance for his Tigers. "I think that we played four quarters of football," Paul said after his Tigers moved to 2-0 on the season for the first time in more than a decade. "Some of the young guys stepped up, the offense and defense played well and as a whole, we did well in the game." Touchdowns from Kelby Guillory, Traville Frederick and a pair of safeties were enough for Jeanerette to overcome playing a Class 4A school that only managed to get into Jeanerette territory twice in the game.   But the one thing that Paul said his team needed to work on was the fact that Jeanerette had four touchdowns called back due to penalties. There were also a pair of touchdowns called back by penalty in the week one win over Westminster Christian as well. "That's the main thing that we need to work on starting Monday," Paul said. "We've had too many touchdown called back in the past couple of games plus we dropped three more touchdown passes tonight." "I tell the kids all the time you need to step up and make plays when it's time to do so." Jeanerette made enough plays Saturday to tame the visiting Tigers in a game that was moved from Jeanerette to Loreauville because the field at Jeanerette was unplayable due to recent heavy rains. Guillory, the high jump specialist, got things started for Jeanerette with a touchdown reception from Zion Colar in the second quarter. That was followed by the first of two safeties as Morgan City quarterback Thomas Mancuso dropped a snap and kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone to avoid a defensive touchdowns. Frederick scored on a pass from Colar in the second quarter and the resulting two-point conversion made the score 18-0. Morgan City got on the board in the third quarter on a touchdown pass to cut the lead to 18-6 but another safety from Jeanerette made the score 20-6 and a final score from the Tigers in the fourth quarter gave the final 26-6 margin. Though the first two weeks of the season, Paul has liked what he as seen from his team for the most part. "Our defense has been playing lights out," Paul said. "The last two weeks we have given up one offense touchdown and our offense is starting get into rhythm and by mid-season, I think that we are going to have it all working together." Morgan City coach Aaron Myers said that his team is young and that there is a lot that they need to work on to get better but they are slowly coming around. "We're just a young group," Myers said. "We played hard and we fought to the end. We're improving we just have to keep going in the right direction. "The biggest difference tonight was that we didn't have some calls go our way." A short week for Jeanerette comes as the Tigers head on the road to face Lake Arthur Friday in another non-district game as the Tigers try to go 3-0.

Donnie had an epiphany while learning the fundamentals of business at the outset of his career: “Most people fail at the first hurdle because they become fixated on the need for stacks of start-up capital in their firms,” he explains. “However, all they truly need is commitment, drive, and guts. Money should be the last thing on their minds.” He literally built a thriving home care services business with nothing more than a pad of paper, a pen, and an empty wallet. Donnie P., an entrepreneur, and native of Jeanerette, Louisiana, is currently in the cannabis business. He is also an author and a public speaker. His first business book, How to Catch a Mouse with No Cheese, is aimed at helping people who have been in an industry for up to a year or are interested in beginning a firm but lack the necessary funds. With more than twenty years of experience in the business world, Donnie has seen the highs and lows of it, as he says, “I have opened businesses, closed businesses, made millions, and lost millions.” In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, he talks with Matthew and Luigi about his incredible journey. He also offers a lot of information on how to start and run a profitable cannabis business. Tune in to discover how to overcome any business barriers that are keeping you from succeeding.   What You Will Learn: Why Donnie transitioned from home health care to the cannabis industry. In Episode 5, we chronicle the Cajuns of the Louisiana National Guard. The 2nd Battalion of the 156th Inf. Reg. (31st Dixie Division) consisted of several companies of guardsmen from the bayou country. Nearly all of them grew up speaking French as their first language. This entire unit spent more than 2 years training together before being shipped overseas as combat military police units. The history of this Cajun Guard unit is particularly unique, as it represented the largest French-speaking American infantry unit within the US military during World War II. In this first of a two-part series, you will hear voices of several of these veterans from New Iberia, Jeanerette, Lafayette, and Breaux Bridge and how they kept their culture and French-language in tact through the first years of the war.
