Foodbank is the largest hunger relief charity in Australia, providing the ‘food pantry' to the charity sector across the country.  This year alone, Foodbank sourced enough food for more than 92 million meals, and the number grows as cost of living pressures continue to mount. In this final Weekly Grill podcast episode for the year, host Kerry Lonergan talks with Foodbank Australia chief executive Brianna Casey, and chief transformation officer Michael Davidson about the massive task at hand, and how people can help. Michael shares progress on the beef sector's engagement with Foodbank, and the associated BeefBank concept. The Weekly Grill will return with a new series in 2025.   The Weekly Grill is brought to readers and listeners by Rhinogard by Zoetis.

China is the world's largest energy consumer and carbon emitter, accounting for one-third of global CO2 emissions. One of its biggest sources of emissions is coal, which plays a central role in China's economy. At the same time, however, China is the world's leading supplier of renewable energy, largely due to significant government investments in green technologies, including solar manufacturing, batteries, and minerals. In September 2020, China's leader Xi Jinping announced the goal of achieving peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060.” This ambitious pledge, if realized, will be an important step in global efforts to limit global warming. In the past few years, the increasingly competitive and fraught relationship between the United States and China has spilled into the climate domain, threatening the potential for both countries to work together to address climate change. That is the topic of a recent commentary co-authored by Margaret Pearson and Michael Davidson. The paper is titled, “Where are the US and China on addressing climate change?”, and it can be found on the Brookings Institution website. In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Dr. Michael Davidson joins us to discuss China's energy security. Dr. Davidson gives an overview of China's energy landscape and compares it to that of other countries, such as the United States. He explains how China's energy priorities have evolved throughout the last decade, especially in response to factors such as climate change and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Dr. Davidson emphasizes the effects that the 2021 and 2022 power shortages in China had on senior Chinese leadership and the resulting elevation in importance of energy security, specifically in the power sector. Additionally, Dr. Davidson discusses China's challenge in balancing energy security with its goals of reducing emissions and the resulting expanded definition of what energy security encompasses. Finally, Dr. Davidson speaks to how China's evolving energy security affects its foreign policy and the potential risks for the U.S. and other countries in collaborating with China on clean energy.   Dr. Michael Davidson is an assistant professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department of the Jacobs School of Engineering. Michael Davidson's research focuses on the engineering implications and institutional conflicts inherent in deploying renewable energy at scale. He is particularly interested in China's energy system, which he has studied for over 15 years. Dr. Davidson was previously the U.S.-China Climate Policy Coordinator for the environmental nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). He was a Public Intellectuals Program Fellow at the National Committee of U.S.-China Relations, is a current fellow with the Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations, and a former Fulbright Scholar. Prior to joining UC San Diego, Davidson was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center's Environment and Natural Resources Program. He received his Ph.D. in engineering systems and a masters in Technology and Policy from MIT.

Writer Glenn Patterson finds out how, in May 1974, a tiny band of loyalists and unionists over fourteen days stages a strike that paralyses Northern Ireland, and slides it into anarchy. Then twelve years old, Glenn lived through these events, taking place in the context of a ‘Troubles' during which 1000 have already died. 50 years on, he digs into what really happened, because these events cast a long shadow. The Ulster Workers' Council stoppage culminated in the overthrow of Northern Ireland's democratically elected devolved government – then just five months old, and the first power-sharing administration ever in the country's history. Its formation, which involved controversial formal links to the Irish government, sparks the stoppage. Decades pass before the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement of 1998 brings another such attempt at power sharing. China is the largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world, making its carbon abatement plans crucial to the future of global climate change mitigation. The country's flagship climate goals aim to peak carbon levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 (“30-60 goals”). China has moved more slowly in developing its emissions trading system (ETS) than in other carbon abatement areas. 2021 marked the inception of China's ETS, the largest carbon emissions market in the world. At the onset, the ETS showed promising returns, with close to $200 million tons of trading in the first transaction period (July-December 2021). However, over the past few years, China has moved slowly to expand the ETS to include more industries. Most recently, the government passed a new series of regulations that will strengthen the legitimacy of the market and authorize more penalties for companies that fabricate or fail to report their emissions. On April 4, 2024, Michael Davidson joins Max Song and Xiaolu Zhao to discuss China's emissions trading system and its implications for domestic and international climate goals. The Traitors Season 2 has met its end! With Stephenie on vacation this week, season 1 contestant Michael Davidson fills in for her on the Jack Vita Show and breaks down a historic finale and dramatic reunion show, in the eleventh episode of The Traitors, "One Final Hurdle". The episode picks up where episode 10 left off. In the aftermath of Phaedra Parks' banishment, Kate is the final traitor remaining. Kate chooses to murder Sheree, hoping to pin the murder on a non-Bravo cast member. Kate takes aim at Sandra, making the two-time Survivor champion her next target. Meanwhile, Sandra is on to Kate. Sandra believes Kate slipped up at the latest roundtable, when she cast her vote towards Phaedra. The group completes the final mission, raising the prize pot to $208,100. In the moments before the roundtable, the cast scrambles as Sandra and Kate fight for their lives in the game. Trishelle and CT had planned to banish Kate, but CT changes his tune at the last second, something that shocks Trishelle. An emotional Trishelle casts a vote for Sandra, wanting to vote with the group, even though she appears to have no desire to vote out Sandra. Sandra is banished, and reveals that she is indeed a faithful. Moments later, the final four enters the fire of truth. The contestants have the choice between ending the game or banishing again. Kate chooses to end the game, while MJ, Trishelle and CT all opt to banish again. Considering that there was a murder at the start of the episode and Sandra was not a traitor, the group knows that there has to be at least one more traitor remaining in the game. Kate is banished, leaving MJ, Trishelle and CT. CT gives a wink to Trishelle, and both former Challengers vote to banish again, leaving MJ in shock. What comes as an even greater shock to the audience however, is when Trishelle votes for CT. CT votes for MJ and MJ votes for Trishelle, making the vote a deadlock tie. CT's sudden pivot from voting Kate to banishing Sandra at the previous roundtable causes suspicion from Trishelle. Before revoting, CT assures Trishelle that he is not a traitor, and MJ is banished from the game, leaving the two Real World alumni as the champions of The Traitors Season 2, splitting the prize pot equally. The reunion show does not lack drama, either. Dan receives blowback for his decision to target Phaedra before his banishment. MJ is disgusted with CT and Trishelle. Meanwhile, Peter breaks out a spot-on Alan Cumming impression and the cast relives the biggest moments and discusses the greatest talking points from the second season of The Traitors. Michael and Jack are here to break it all down, providing thoughtful commentary and analysis. It's a Traitors finale recap that you will NOT want to miss! Earlier this year, Michael Davidson of Oneida, Kentucky, made his reality television debut, appearing on season one of Peacock's The Traitors. Michael visits the Jack Vita Show to discuss his time on The Traitors, along with his Survivor and Big Brother fandom, and share his incredible life story of overcoming terrible childhood trauma and going from an atheist to a born-again Christian.   Michael's parents were drug dealers, and when he was a small child, both of his parents were murdered in the middle of the night. Michael was raised by his grandmother, and due to her own health difficulties, Michael had to grow up quickly from a young age, so that he could help take care of her. Michael spent most of his childhood and early adult years feeling angry, and with good reason. He had been forced to overcome challenges at a young age that most Americans will never face. Unhappy, angry, and turned-off by the church caused by negative interactions with so-called "Christians", Michael was an atheist for much of his life. Then, in 2011, he visited a church with a friend, which led to an encounter with Jesus Christ that forever changed his life. Michael experienced a transformation of heart, as he went from an atheist to a born-again Christian. His newfound faith brought purpose, meaning, direction, peace and joy to his life.   From an early age, Michael was a big fan of reality television, particularly competition shows such as Survivor and Big Brother. His love for these shows was a temporary escape from his difficult circumstances. In fact, he even found inspiration from CBS icons Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick, Cirie Fields and Rachel Reilly — all of whom he would compete with and against on The Traitors. Michael discusses his Survivor and Big Brother fandom. How did Michael start watching, and who were some of his favorite Survivor contestants? What were some of his favorite seasons? What did he think of Stephenie and Cirie when he watched them from afar as a viewer, and did his view of either of them change in any way when he met them on The Traitors? What was it like meeting them for the first time? Find out how Cirie inspired Michael to apply for reality television. Hear about his in-game relationship with Stephenie, Cirie and Rachel. Would he have ever turned on any of them? Where did Michael's loyalties in the castle lie?   After growing up watching reality television, what was it like for Michael to finally get a chance to compete on a show, now as a full-grown adult and father in his mid-30s? Michael shares his casting story, and discusses his time on The Traitors. Michael gives his take on how the game played out while he was still in contention, and after. Michael was banished from the castle in the fourth episode, making him the sixth person eliminated from the show. He also shares some fun stories that didn't make the air, one of which involves U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. Michael answers questions about the show's production, such as, Did the contestants actually live in the castle?   After appearing on The Traitors, Michael competed on an episode of Let's Make a Deal in April.   The first hour of today's show focuses on Michael's reality TV fandom and firsthand experiences on The Traitors. Later on, Michael tells his incredible life and faith story (1:03:50 - END). Hear about how Jesus Christ changed Michael's life, and how he survived childhood trauma.

Today, we're coming back to the power sector to discuss a new report about the pathways for scaling up renewables as China pursues its policy to peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. The report is entitled Renewable Energy Pathways to Carbon Neutrality in China, and it's the fruit of a collaboration between scholars at Tsinghua School of the Environment, California China Climate Institute at Berkeley Law, Power Transformation Lab hosted at the UCSD. The report was released in May 2023. Michael Davidson is an assistant professor joint with the School of Global Policy and Strategy and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of California, San Diego, where he leads the Power Transformation Lab. Dr. Davidson's teaching and research focus on the engineering implications and institutional conflicts inherent in deploying low-carbon energy at scale to mitigate environmental harms, specializing in applications to China, India, and the U.S. Zhenhua is a PhD Student in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California in San Diego, and he is focusing on power systems modeling, electricity markets, and energy policy issues. We address: What makes this forecast and model different from others, in terms of methods and also results. What its forecast for renewable capacity and renewable share is, out to 2060. What the relative role for distributed energy is, compared to current trends. What the model assumes for the cost of transmission, and how it models transmission compared to present policy, which considers mainly utilization in considering the costs and benefits of new lines. What the role of power market reform is. What we expect for power outages this summer.
