We are talking about mindsets in this episode of Overcoming Distractions. Some mindsets are useful, and some are not serving you well anymore. One mindset that might ring a bell to you is that “I work better on deadline.” And we know most of us have ADHD in this community can say this…. However that's a mindset that may not be totally true for most of us. Dave sits down with Dr. Charryse Johnson, LCMHC, NCC a veteran psychotherapist and mindfulness practitioner whose work focuses on the intersection of trauma, somatic integration, spirituality, and social justice. She is the founder of Jade Integrative Counseling and Wellness, an integrative therapy practice where personal values, the search for meaning, and the power of choice are the central focus. Her new book is called- Expired Mindsets: Releasing Patterns That No Longer Serve You Well Dr. Johnson explains that an expired mindset is something that may have been useful to you at one time but presently does not serve you. Maybe we continue to tell ourselves something that just doesn't help us move forward any longer. She also discusses with Dave how a proper mindset allows us to thrive and be fulfilled in life and in our work. And how throughout our life we may be telling ourselves certain things that may not be true to us. Dr. Johnson also explains the concept of shift versus change when it comes to moving away from expired mindsets. Dave and Dr. Johnson discuss why self-awareness is so crucial for adults with ADHD and why this is important for us to understand ourselves and how we can thrive using proper mindsets. Dr. Johnson talks about her role as a psychotherapist and what's involved when she's trying to key in on somebody's mindsets and how that helps them move forward. She also discusses why it is important to release certain patterns and how to begin that process. And Dave and Dr. Johnson wrapped up by discussing how we can make progress fun moving forward from expired mindsets and negative self-talk. Trauma and addiction are deeply connected, and somatic therapy offers powerful tools for healing. We are talking to Jennie Pool, MS, LCMHC, BSP, LMT, who is the Clinical Director & Therapist at MEND Counseling Center.Using techniques like EMDR, brain spotting, and vibroacoustic sound therapy tap into the body's natural ability to process and release stored trauma without re-traumatization.Regulating the nervous system is key. Without grounding and restoring balance, stress can lead to nervous system fatigue. Tools like sound waves and simple grounding techniques help create a sense of safety and calm, making healing more sustainable.Coping mechanisms come in two forms: adaptive and maladaptive. Running, for example, supports overall health, while habits like excessive drinking may feel like a relief but only create more harm. Choosing healthier ways to manage stress can transform emotional and physical well-being.Healing starts from the inside out, focusing first on the body's sensations before diving into thoughts and emotions. This bottom-up approach allows for deeper, lasting recovery, giving the nervous system the space to reset and reclaim balance.Access to somatic healing shouldn't feel out of reach. Free resources, like YouTube tutorials and mental health tips, make practices accessible, even for those who can't afford therapy. The body holds incredible wisdom, and when we tune in, the path to recovery becomes clear. Healing is possible, and it starts with listening to what your body needs.Connect with JennieOn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennie_pool/https://mendcounselingcenter.com/Want to Work with The Samantha Parker for Content Management CLICK HERE Grab my Sober Travel Tips Guide HERE Check out My Sober Storefront HERE Follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@samanthaparkershow YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@thesamanthaparker Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thesamanthaparker/

***Just a reminder to listeners that the topic of sexual health is an important step in the recovery journey, and if you are not yet in the place in your recovery to work on that piece, that is perfectly normal and okay. Listeners are invited to skip this episode if needed and rejoin on the next one!*** Becky, Autumn and Tiffany are joined by Sex Therapist Jessica Holfeltz to discuss listener questions about sex therapy. Jessica shares what sex therapy is and what it is not. She reassures listeners that sex therapy involves talking and processing with the therapist, learning to communicate with their partners, and navigating the journey towards healthy sexuality. Jessica encourages listeners to get curious about all aspects of their sexuality. She shares the importance of listening to any pain in our bodies and instructs listeners that when pain in any form happens during sex, it is vital to stop and listen to our bodies. Sex therapy can help partners communicate and remove shame from the experience. She stresses the importance of honest communication and honoring the “no's” so that our “yes's” have more meaning. Jessica also teaches listeners that in order to have healthy sexuality, we must first have a healthy relationship with pleasure in general and learn how to navigate the voices of shame. His work focuses on helping individuals and couples heal from patterns of ancestral, familial, and relational trauma. In this episode, Jared and I have a conversation about parenting and fatherhood. We discuss our own involvement with our sons and our relational schemas with our fathers. Jared shares his journey into fatherhood after years in recovery, which gave him a foundation and practice in the journey of emotional regulation and renewal We explore such questions as; What do sons wish they had received from their fathers? What might honest, healing conversations between fathers and sons look like? What does it look like to heal intergenerational trauma and dysfunction? “Being the dad that I want to be on a daily basis is not overshawing the small things; like cuddling my son in bed or helping him regulate when he's having a tough time“ - Jared Hinton Related podcasts: Fatherhood: My Kind of Yoga A Father - Son Conversation Connect with Jared Hinton: Jaredhinton.org Email:jaredhintonpsychotherapy@gmail.com Let's Talk About It! In this episode of TME#496, guest Dr. Charryse Johnson shares insights into releasing patterns that don't serve us, stemming from her personal journey through trauma and healing. Growing up as the youngest of eight in a household filled with diverse reactions to challenges, Johnson's early exposure to trauma and observation of varying coping mechanisms sparked her interest in human development and psychology. She pursued these fields with the aim of understanding the intricacies of healing and helping others navigate their own paths towards wellness. Johnson emphasizes that healing is a continuous process, likening it to the care and rehabilitation required after a physical injury. She challenges the notion that one can ever be "fully healed," proposing instead that healing evolves over time, requiring ongoing attention and adjustment. The conversation delves into the definition of trauma, broadening it beyond extreme events to include any experience that exceeds an individual's capacity to cope at the time. Johnson's approach to healing focuses on self-awareness, acknowledging pain without dwelling on it, and actively choosing pathways towards personal growth and resilience. She underscores the importance of mindful check-ins and diaphragmatic breathing as practical tools for fostering a healing mindset throughout daily life.Who is Dr. Charryse Johnson?Dr.Charryse Johnson, LCMHC, NCC is a veteran psychotherapist and mindfulness practitioner whose work focuses on the intersection of trauma, somatic integration, spirituality, and social justice. Here's a challenge that all mental professionals face: no provider is immune to misdiagnosing a client. This likelihood increases if that client presents with symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Even an accurate, timely diagnosis and treatment of DID isn't without its complications. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, Emily Ruth welcomes back Erin Lewis-Gibson, MS, LCMHC. Together, they explore the evolution of DID as a diagnosis and its treatment, the effects of social media on fictive personalities within a client's organizing system, and Erin's desire to reduce the global stigma attached to DID. Emily and Erin also discuss the positive impact that NARM has on creating a more consensual, relational and effective therapeutic environment, thus providing folks with DID the support they need to ensure their best quality of life. About Erin Lewis-Gibson: Erin Lewis-Gibson, MS, LCMHC, CFO, NARM Master Therapist is a dissociative disorders specialist living and working in North Carolina. She aims to educate therapists on how to diagnose and treat dissociative disorders and to reduce the global stigma of DID.
