How to teach yoga in a trauma sensitive way is a conversation that floods mainstream yoga spaces these days. And with good reason. Every person has small t traumatic experiences, and most people have also experienced Big T Trauma as well.  It is very easy for yoga and asana to be taught in ways that are not trauma sensitive. Being aware of teacher-student power dynamics and how they impact students with trauma is paramount to skillful teaching.  That is why I am so happy to introduce you to Jenn Turner (she/her). She is a trauma-informed therapist and yoga teacher, and has been at the forefront of combining those two modalities since the early 2000s.  She has also been involved in two different spiritual and healing communities that experienced abuse of power by the leader, as so many of us have. She has advice and a way forward for communities that have experienced this kind of harm. In this episode you'll hear: what  has changed the most in the landscape of trauma sensitive yoga since 2008 what is most important for yoga teachers to know about when it comes to trauma informed practice how power, self reflection and holding containers are all things we need to be thinking about as yoga teachers what communities and individuals can do when they recover from abuse inside places that are supposed to be healing spaces Learn More From Jenn: Center for Trauma and Embodiment Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Jenn on Instagram

Jimanekia is the Founder of Tending The Garden- a nonprofit in service of sexual assault survivors who have been marginalized; offering retreats, online summits, community and education. She is also the co-founder of Cintima, bringing increased representation to the field of Intimacy Coordination in the film industry. Key points: Introductions and background Jimanekia introduces herself, sharing her full name and background. She describes herself as an inquisitive, question-asking person who has experienced various traumas and is now dedicated to supporting others navigating difficult experiences. She outlines her diverse work, including the Jimanekia project focused on assault, her trauma-focused podcast, an intimacy coordinator training company, and her role in the mental health department of a professional wrestling company. Trauma-informed support and advocacy Jimanekia discusses her approach to supporting survivors, emphasizing the importance of allowing them to guide the conversation and decide how they want to share their experiences. She contrasts this with common unhelpful responses that project assumptions or make demands of survivors. Jimanekia also highlights the need for more trauma-informed support, especially for marginalized groups and men, who often face additional stigma and barriers to disclosing. Navigating trauma and consent The conversation explores the complexities around trauma, consent, and gender. Jimanekia and Cam discuss the societal pressures and norms that can prevent men from recognizing or disclosing their experiences of abuse, as well as the tendency to dismiss or trivialize these experiences. They emphasize the importance of creating safe spaces for all survivors to be heard and supported without judgment. Systemic change and accountability Jimanekia and Cam discuss the need for broader systemic changes to address the root causes of violence and trauma, such as harmful gender norms, power imbalances, and lack of accountability. They highlight the responsibility of institutions and communities to proactively create safer environments and provide comprehensive support for survivors, rather than placing the burden on individuals. Closing thoughts Jimanekia closes the conversation by offering encouragement and validation to any male survivors listening, emphasizing that their experiences are not their fault and that there are supportive communities available to them.  Episode NotesHave you ever wondered any of these: What the science is behind creativity? What causes creativity in the brain? What part of the brain is used in creativity? Or maybe even how to activate creativity in the brain? In this episode Kate speaks with Dr. Cheryl Arutt a clinical and forensic psychologist based in Los Angeles, California working with actors, writers, directors and showrunners supporting their psychological well-being. A specialist in trauma recovery, creativity and post-traumatic growth, Dr. Cheryl is currently Access Hollywood's go-to psychologist for trauma issues, a frequent psychological expert on many networks including CNN, HLN and DiscoveryID, and has been interviewed by the BBC and 20/20 Australia.  For more information about Dr. Cheryl please visit askdrcheryl.com, and for info about her online courses for creative artists please visit www.thecreativeresilience.comDr. Cheryl explains how creativity works and what it even is from a Brain Science Perspective. We talk about the link between education and creativity. I ask her if we are doing enough to foster creativity & creating thinking in the school system? And she gives us some actionable things we can do at home for ourselves and our children to rev our own creative engines. One of my favourite moments though, comes towards the end  when I ask her about the possibility of the opposite of inheriting generational trauma existing. We know we can inherit trauma but can we inherit magical wonderful things too? We shared a really tender moment - one where I felt like she was talking to ALL of us. It's beautiful, uplifting and inspiring.  I think you'll be really moved by it. What Dr. Cheryl Arutt & I talk about-What creativity IS from a brain science perspective. -What is really going on inside our psychology when people say “I'm not creative”-Why processing trauma including intergenerational trauma, and converting it to post traumatic growth is so important (and is absolutely possible)-The link between education and creativity. Are we fostering creativity and creating thinking enough in the school system? And if we are seeing that our children are not getting as much focus on creativity in school what can we do at home? -What is the one question you can ask yourself (or your kids) to kick start your creativity (what is another way to do that/look at that/solve that)-How the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is a myth-How to use creativity to safely access our traumas -What is EMDR (eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing therapy how it was discovered and how creative people can use it to heal trauma and access even more of their innate creativity-Post traumatic growth - learning to integrate and recognize all the ways you grew as a person as a result of living through your trauma-What she thinks creativity is trying to do - from a brain science perspectiveAbout Dr. Cheryl AruttDr. Cheryl Arutt is an accomplished clinical and forensic psychologist based in Beverly Hills, CA whose amalgamation of rigorous training and experience allows her to engage with people from a place of deep insight and empathy. Through compassion, skill and sometimes even humor, she helps her patients uncover what is in the way of living a full-access life, empowering them to move forward.Following over 20 years as a working actor, Dr. Cheryl's interest in human behavior shifted to psychology after volunteering on a crisis line. When life feels stressful, dark, or challenging, we often tell ourselves--or are told by others--that we should just toughen and carry on. Yet, from my professional and personal experience, I've learned that compartmentalizing or burying our struggles only makes things worse in the long run. When we ignore our needs for mental, emotional, and physical safety, we can worsen underlying issues such as anxiety or unresolved trauma. On the positive side, I've discovered a mental health toolkit that helps foster genuine healing. Join me, Dr. Carla Marie Manly, and trauma medical expert Dr. Christy Gibson, for a heartfelt journey into the realm of trauma, anxiety, and the healing process. As physician Dr. Christy notes, "It took me so many years to recognize trauma underlies so much of physical and mental ill health that I saw. It took more years to learn why this happens in individuals and families and communities, especially those placed at risk in their social positions. It's now time to share what can be done at all these levels – to provide some hope and a solution focus. Without hope, trauma intensifies.” Please note that this episode contains sensitive trauma-related material; listener discretion is advised. Dr. Frank Anderson is a world-renowned trauma expert, psychiatrist, and author, whose highly anticipated memoir, To Be Loved: A Story of Truth, Trauma, and Transformation launches on May 7, 2024 (Bridge City Books). It's a rare inside look at how a leader in the field endured his own heartbreaking yet powerful personal experience with trauma to then transform his life and heal from his tumultuous past.     In To Be Loved, Dr. Anderson takes us through his own journey of growing up gay in a traditional Italian American home that was fiercely loving and culturally close-knit while at the same time unaccepting, abusive and riddled with secret shame and dark family secrets. At just the tender age of six, he was made to feel that something was “wrong” with him, as he forcibly endured the horrific reality of “conversion therapy” for six long years and was forced to be somebody he wasn't for decades.     Trauma is universal and can happen to anyone, anywhere, with over 220 million people (70% of US adults) affected by various types of trauma in the US alone.  Dr. Anderson can discuss how to:  ·      Break the generational cycle of trauma. ·      Find meaning in self-acceptance.   ·      Embrace your truth and heal in a deep, compassionate way.   With a possible big screen project in Hollywood in the works, Dr. Anderson has also worked with dancer, choreographer and Host of “Dancing with the Stars” Julianne Hough and helped her develop a trauma-informed dance movement component for the Kinrgy Dance Program.     Dr. Anderson has been featured on Daily Blast Live, Mindbodygreen, and more.    "In a world where trauma experts can appear flawless, Dr. Frank Anderson's "To Be Loved" is a breath of fresh air and a testament to the power of authenticity. Dr. Anderson doesn't just preach about trauma healing; he lives it. His profound belief in 'trauma blocks love, and love heals trauma' isn't just a catchphrase; it's a philosophy he embodies, inspiring us all to approach healing trauma with authenticity and love."  Any feedback or questions hit us up; Jamie@360yourself.co.uk community@360yourself.co.uk

Trauma is a buzzword, but how do you identify if you have trauma and what do we actually do to recover from it? It's safe to say that all humans do at this point, and if you didn't before the pandemic, that collective trauma may have had a deeper impact on you than you realize. According to trauma specialist and coach, Ali Kates, we are now in a mental health pandemic where people are suffering, but don't know what to do.    In both a fun-filled and more serious conversation, Ali walks Kelly through her top tips for identifying and recovering from trauma, including three simple tricks you can incorporate into your daily routine.   Ali talks about the importance of having a hobby as it relates to mental health. Women, this one's for you! She gives recommendations of ideas for hobbies as well as questions to ask yourself to figure out what kind of hobby you may like. And if you are reading this thinking, I don't have time for a hobby, there is discussion about that as well as how common it is for women specifically to not have hobbies.   Ali brings up the feeling of feeling “behind in life” and explains why that feeling specifically is often related to a traumatic experience.     The women also discuss the truth about anger, where it's actually coming from, why expressing it can be very difficult for some people and overly used for others.    The last part of the conversation is dedicated to deciphering “victim mode” and what that actually is and how to find gratitude and growth through pain.    Socials: @alikates.co Website: alikates.co   Resources Referenced:  James Clear: https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits   Peter Levine : https://www.somaticexperiencing.com/about-peter   Gabor Mate: https://drgabormate.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
