Consider the guitar, spacefans. it's arguably our most ubiquitous instrument. These days, it comes in many varieties: acoustic and electric, folk and classical, nylon and steel string, slide and electronic—to name a few. And when it comes to creating ambient music, the kind of guitar matters quite a bit. Acoustic guitar tends toward classic tunings and slow tempos, with conservative use of effects; electric guitar is almost the opposite, with aggressive use of effects, feedback, and modifiers. And though the results vary widely, it's still recognizable as a guitar. But with the electronic guitar, you might never know the sound came from a guitar at all—the instrument has been redefined, dematerialized, and effectively disappeared. The guitar becomes a playable "user interface"—a familiar way to control synthesizers and other electronics. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the evolving world of the ambient guitar, on a program called TRANSLUCENT GUITARS. Music is by TOM CAUFIELD, COLIN EDWIN & JON DURANT, CRAIG PADILLA & MARVIN ALLEN, JOHN GREGORIUS, DARSHAN AMBIENT, ROBIN GUTHRIE, HAMMOCK, CARL WEINGARTEN, JUHA-MATTI RAUTIAINEN, JEFF PEARCE, and DELAY TACTICS. One of the key built-in features of music is movement. Fast or slow, steady or changing, ascending or descending in musical space — music invites us to move within it when we listen, while also inspiring us physically to move with it. When we move in physical space, we normally have a destination, goal, or purpose. But when we explore a new environment, we like to be goal-free, take our time, and savor the experience. We can do this with the virtual environments of ambient music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the underrated pleasure of unplanned exploration, on a program called WANDERING. Music is by ROBERT RICH & LUCA FORMENTINI, BJÖRN MEYER, JON DURANT & ROBERT JÜRJENDAL & PETER CHILVERS, SECONDFACE, and EIVIND AARSET. This episode of Big Blend Radio's Music Monday show features Swiss guitarist Stephan Thelen and his American counterpart Jon Durant who have teamed up for an international musical conversation. The pair conceived and executed the album “Crossings” during the Covid lockdowns of 2020. Each working in his own home studio, Thelen on Lake Zürich, Durant on the Willamette River, the pair fell into a remarkable sense of shared purpose as they developed the seven tracks that comprise the album. While the album was entirely done with guitars (and one bass part), there are frequent trips into sonic spheres that bear little resemblance to the traditional sounds of the instrument they share. This episode of Big Blend Radio features English keyboardist Peter Chilvers and American guitarist Jon Durant. Hear about their collaboration to create and release “Always Golden Sands” and “Vista,” an ambient jazz album in two parts that features a series of stunningly beautiful aural vistas, which blend ECM inspired chamber jazz improvisation with ambient music. For both artists, this recording was an opportunity to explore their introspective sides as well as their textural tendencies. Gentle melodies weave their way through atmospheric clouds, at times reminiscent of Budd and Eno, but with a sense of interplay between the guitar and keys those ambient pioneers left out. Both releases are available now on Bandcamp and all streaming services - see: https://jondurant.bandcamp.com or https://peterchilvers.bandcamp.com Special thank you to the National Parks Arts Foundation. www.NationalParksArtsFoundation.org

Maybe it was just a coincidence, a timely convergence, but the era of space exploration that began in the 1960s was also a formative decade for electronic music. At the time, German experimental composer KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN observed that there was a natural relationship between his electronic music and images of cosmic space. Maybe it was the drugs, but it seemed right. In Germany, the late 1960s saw the rise of the "Kozmik Musik" genre; electronic nebulae blossomed all over Europe and the English speaking countries; SUN RA toured the world and played his own brand of Afro-cosmic funk, while JOHN COLTRANE and his wife ALICE released the album COSMIC MUSIC. In the 1970's the COSMIC COURIERS record label was established, PROGRESSIVE ROCK went cosmic and became SPACE ROCK, BRIAN ENO invented Ambient, and PINK FLOYD became the biggest selling band in the world after Dark Side of the Moon. It was Good Times for space fans. Today, electronic spacemusic is an established genre with a nice article in Wikipedia and a steady stream of significant new music from masters of the craft. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a classic journey in the electronic starfields, on a program called MASTERS OF SPACE. Music is by ERIK WØLLO & MICHAEL STEARNS, DAVID HELPLING & JON JENKINS, JON DURANT & ROBERT JÜRJENDAL, PHILLIP WILKERSON, and JEFF GREINKE. A prolific painter and a foremost American Impressionist, Childe Hassam may be most important in his role as a bridge between American art and the Impressionist art of Europe. He was a leader in introducing Impressionism to America and remained committed to it. Artist Victoria Chick discusses the life and work of American impressionist Childe Hassam (1859-1935). Read her article on him here: https://blendradioandtv.com/listing/american-impressionist-childe-hassam/Music on this episode is ‘Clouds in Advance' from the ‘Parting Is' album by guitarist Jon Durant. www.JonDurant.com

Allen is editor-in-chief at Northwest Travel & Life Magazine and VP of International Food Wine and Travel Writers Association. Featured music is “Before the Rain Falls” from guitarist Jon Durant's latest solo album, “Parting Is”.
Following three acclaimed CDs with his group Burnt Belief, Jon Durant has returned with his first solo album since 2011's “Dance of the Shadow Planets.” Unlike his previous solo albums, however, “Parting Is” is a completely solo guitar album. A deeply emotional and personal record, “Parting Is” takes the idea of a solo guitar album and transforms it into a stunning sonic landscape of texture and color. Many of the sounds on the album bear no relationship with traditional guitar, but there are no synthesizers employed at all. Everything is played by Jon Durant on guitars (with Durant also playing fretless bass on four pieces).

Inspired by the unspoken and hidden truths behind our daily reality, “Emergent” is the third in a trilogy of collaborative works by bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree/Metallic Taste of Blood/O.R.k etc) and experimental US guitarist Jon Durant, under the working name Burnt Belief. “Emergent” builds on the duo's previous work whilst still exploring the fundamental aspects that define Burnt Belief's sonic world, namely hypnotic rhythmic elements seamlessly blended with lush guitar led soundscapes and deep ambient atmospherics. “Emergent” also showcases the intense and unpredictable, yet satisfying guitar playing from Durant, who manages to tame elemental, skittish and frequently unsettling tones, by subtly wrapping them in layers of magnetic aura. Drumming throughout is Vinny Sabatino, who brings an inventive, muscular and precise beat to complement Colin Edwin's expansive and expressive fretless and upright basses.
