Breakfast with Refilwe Moloto
When the vinegar lingers, pickled waste management and the drains tell tales

A tongue-in-cheek listener question about leftover pickled fish marinade turned into a humorous on-air moment, as Lester Kiewit and Councillor Zahid Badroodien played along with the idea that Cape Town’s wastewater plants are suddenly awash with oniony, vinegary sludge after Easter. While there may be a grain of truth in increased food waste over the holiday, the conversation leaned firmly into comedy, from “pickle-scented” treatment works to creative (and questionable) reuse ideas like soaking hot cross buns in leftover marinade. Beneath the laughs, though, was a gentle reminder not to pour oils, fats, or food waste down the drain, as that can cause real blockages. A classic blend of humour and public service, proving even pickled fish can spark a memorable radio moment. Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show. LOVING LIFE AT HOME - Christian Marriage, Faith-Based Parenting, Biblical Homemaking, Purposeful Living

We're right in the middle of holy week, which makes this a great time to discuss some of our family's favorite Easter traditions -- especially those that keep our focus on the finished work of Christ on the cross. Show Notes VERSES CITED: - Matthew 13:44 - “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”  - 1 John 4:10 - “God loved us and sent His Son.”  - Matthew 28:6 - “He has risen, just as He said.”   - John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. - Romans 5:8 - "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - John 8:12 - "I am the light of the world. In today's episode you will learn about Greek Orthodox Easter and how we celebrate it in Greece. Emily and Danae will first engage in a conversation about the celebrations and then will explain the importance of Easter in Greece and the different traditions.E: Danae, did you know that Easter is one of the biggest celebrations in Greece?D: Yes! I've heard that Easter in Greece is very special. What do you usually do?E: Every place has its own customs, but the main ones are common for everyone. It all starts with Holy Week. Each day has its own significance, but Good Friday is very important.D: Right! That's when the procession of the Epitaphios takes place, isn't it?E: Exactly! On Good Friday evening, we follow the Epitaphios through the streets, holding candles.D: And what about Holy Saturday?E: On Holy Saturday, just before midnight, everyone goes to church for the Resurrection. When the priest says “Christ is Risen,” we light our candles with the Holy Light, the bells ring, and in many places there are fireworks too.D: And then you crack the red eggs, right?E: Yes! Cracking the eggs is one of the most fun traditions. And of course, afterwards we eat magiritsa!D: Magiritsa… that's the soup you eat after the Resurrection, right?E: Exactly! It's a traditional soup made with various kinds of meat and greens. Some people love it, others not so much!D: And on Easter Sunday everyone eats lamb on the spit!E: Yes! We gather with family and friends, roast lamb and kokoretsi, and dance traditional dances.D: That sounds wonderful! Do you also have traditional Easter sweets?E: Of course! Tsourekia and koulourakia are the most well-known.D: What's tsoureki?E: It's a sweet and fluffy bread with aromatic spices like mahlepi and mastiha.D: I definitely have to try that! But usually, people celebrate Easter in the villages, right?E: Right, many people leave the cities and go to their villages to celebrate with relatives. The atmosphere there is even more traditional and festive!D: How lovely! I'd really like to celebrate Easter in a Greek village too.E: We can celebrate together! This year, in fact, Orthodox and Catholic Easter fall on the same day. So we can go to my village together. What do you say?D: Do you think I can still make it?E: Absolutely! Čo sa vám páči najviac? (What do you like the most?)Veľkonočné tradície našich starých rodičovVeľká noc je najväčší kresťanský sviatok. A viete čo? Timestamps00:33 Introduction to the episode02:28 About the Easter in Kysuce13:40 Slovak lesson18:20 Easter of out ancestors (in Slovak)20:24  Easter of out ancestors (in English)26:12 Final thoughtsIf you have any questions, send it to my email hello@bozenasslovak.com. Sacrilegious Discourse - Bible Study for Atheists

Are you ready for a heathen's take on the holiest hunger games? Tune in to our latest irreverent episode, "Lentsgiving," where we dive fork-first into the smorgasbord of Lent without actually giving up anything (because, let's be real, self-denial is overrated). We're dishing out a full serving of skepticism with a side of sarcasm as we explore the Christian tradition of Lent, a 40-day marathon of fasting, sacrifice, and, apparently, confusing Easter with a rabbit's birthday bash..ONLY AVAILABLE in full on our Patreon page (Join now on a FREE TRIAL to hear this entire episode!): patreon.com/sacrilegiousdiscourse.We'll start you off with an appetizer of "Understanding Lent in Christianity," where we'll chew on the concept of the Big Bunny Bonanza (you might know it as Easter) and spit out the bones of religious rites with a sprinkle of Midwestern linguistic flair. Discover why "lint" isn't just what you find in your dryer and why we think giving up religion for Lent might just be the best thing since sliced (unleavened) bread. Then, feast your ears on "Understanding Lent and Easter Traditions" as we digest the 40-day fast with a grain of salt, questioning the origin story that's as patchy as grandma's old quilt. We'll sip on the cup of "bright sadness" (sounds like an oxymoron, we know) and nibble on the notion of Lenten sacrifices that are less about spiritual enlightenment and more about one-upping your neighbor's chocolate abstinence.Indulge in the "Easter Season and Mardi Gras" segment, where we compare divine celebrations to the ultimate cheat day before the diet starts. And just when you thought it was safe to go back into the pantry, we bring you "The Easter Holy Week Explanation," dishing out the history of Ash Wednesday and Passion Week with the enthusiasm of someone who just found out there's no Easter Bunny. As we head into the "Religious Holidays and Lenten Sacrifices" section, we're not just breaking bread; we're breaking down the "get out of jail free card" that is Divine Mercy Sunday. We juxtapose this with a glance at the Jewish calendar, all while considering what sacrificial lambs (figurative, of course) we could offer up for a laugh. Finally, in "Giving Up Habits for Lent," we brainstorm a list of personal vices to ditch that range from the serious (like nail-biting) to the ridiculous (sleeping without a pillow? Come on!). Join us as we critique and jest our way through these traditions, all in good fun and with the underlying message that maybe, just maybe, we can find some common ground through shared chuckles. So, if you're up for a bit of Lenten levity, hit play on "Lentsgiving" and join your favorite godless guides for a journey through this time-honored ritual. Whether you're devout, doubtful, or somewhere in between, we promise more laughs than a confessional booth at a comedy club.ONLY AVAILABLE in full on our Patreon page (Join now on a FREE TRIAL to hear this entire episode!): patreon.com/sacrilegiousdiscourse Join Acast+ to enjoy our podcast adfree! https://plus.acast.com/s/sacrilegiousiscourse. As promised, this week we are going to talk about Easter and some Traditions to incorporate with your families. Some of you may do easter egg hunts, baskets, and bunnies, and some may not, and choose to just focus on the Savior, his life, and his resurrection. And some may do both. We try hard to find a balance between both. So I am going to give you a couple of ideas for both!  There really isn't a right or a wrong, it is whatever you feel is best for your family. All traditions take a little bit of planning, work, and time.  Decide which ones you want to do. Why do you want to do them? Is it just a tradition you just do? Why? My why is because it brings us together. It is fun to spend time together Talk with your families if there is too much and see what they say about your traditions. I know there are some nonnegotiables for me, but there may be some others that the kids could take or leave that you're spending A LOT of time and energy doing! Sometimes, doing traditions can be a bit overwhelming, and a bit much.  Sometimes we can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have everything look perfect, but we forget the reason we have them. Maybe even just a little bit of simplifying or asking for some help will make all of the difference and your traditions more enjoyable for you.  Is there a tradition you'd like to start? So many talented people share ideas online!  I always seem to find one that I love, and then make it my own.  The reason for traditions is to gather and build relationships with family. They are to spend time together. To have experiences together that bind and create bonds that last, and at Easter to remember Christ.
