This week, half of us are at the beach enjoying some r n' r, so we thought we'd listen to some r n' r with a beachy vibe. We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air… guitars! Rock artists have been playing acoustic since the very beginning. In fact, most songwriters start the process with an acoustic instrument. There's something about capturing the sound of a song on just wire and wood that has a vulnerable, human feel to it. Dig your toes into the sand, breathe in the salt air, and enjoy these tunes with a frosty beverage. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “Unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs. Songs this week include: Moon Tooth – “Trust” from Violent Grief: Acoustic Selections (2020) Hawkwind – “PSI Power” from Acoustic Daze (2019) Tora Tora – “Son Of A Prodigal Son” from Unplugged EP (2020) Michael Kiske – “You Always Walk Alone” from Past In Different Ways (2008) MIRADOR – “Fortune's Fate (Reborn At Badon Hill)” from The Gathering At Badon Hill (2026) Junkyard – “Til The Wheels Fall Off (Acoustic Version)” from Rome Is Burning (2020) Bloody Hammers – “Graveyard Waits” from The Acoustic Halloween Special (2025) Testament – “The Legacy (Live)” from Live At The Fillmore (1995) Mercy Beat – “Another Day” from Walk With Me (1999) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Wikipedia In 1976, American musician Steve Miller released his hit song "Fly Like an Eagle." The song first made waves in the United Kingdom in August and then landed in the United States by December of that year. It quickly gained popularity, reaching an impressive number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1977.The song always seemed spiritual and Reggae to me when I first heard it. It is categorized as space rock or blues rock. Its unique sound combines elements that creates a feeling of freedom much like the lyrics suggest.Over the years, the song has remained a favorite for its uplifting message and catchy tune. Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle" reminds fans everywhere to dream big and embrace the journey ahead.I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to Sound Flave.
This week, we are welcoming home the astronauts by playing songs written by the star man himself: David Bowie! What better way to celebrate our mission to the moon than by hearing other bands cover his varied tunes. The Thin White Duke was a rock n' roll chameleon who influenced music, film, and fashion for over 50 years. Considered one of the most influential artists of all time, he was the most underground mainstream artist, creating the blueprint for many to follow. Hope we freak you out and that ya dig! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing. Songs this week include: The Get Up Kids – “Sufragette City (David Bowie)” from Eudora (2001) Infectious Grooves – “Fame (David Bowie)” from Sarsippius' Ark (1993) Small Town Titans – “Heroes (David Bowie)” from Heroes - Single (2026) Bauhaus – “Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)” from Ziggy Stardust - Single (1982) Contraband – “Hang On To Yourself (David Bowie)” from Contraband (1991) DREAMCAR – “Moonage Daydream (David Bowie)” from Dream - EP (2024) Enuff Z'Nuff – “The Jene Genie (David Bowie)” from 10 (2000) Classless Act – “Starman (David Bowie)” from Classless Act Does Bowie - Single (2023) Saigon Kick – “Space Oddity (David Bowie)” from Water (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Eighteen hours before my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Rose Matheny first spotted a small space rock with our Schmidt telescope on Mt. Bigelow, Arizona it had passed less than the Earth's diameter from the surface of our planet. Rose was able to discover this Smart Car sized space rock after it moved out of the Sun's glare. At this point it was about the Moon's distance from her and was traveling away at 3.4 mi/s. After Rose posted her discovery observations on the Minor Planet Center's Near Earth Object Confirmation page, for the next 24 hours it was tracked by telescopes in Spain, Illinois, and Arizona. Scientists at the Minor Planet Center used these data to calculate it's orbit around the Sun, estimate it's size and give it the name 2017 UJ2. This small asteroid had come near the Earth in 1978 but was invisible to the technology which astronomers had available at the time. 2017 UJ2 will not come close enough for us to detect in the foreseeable future, however, there are likely to be tens of millions of others like it which can come close to Earth. A small asteroid the size of Rose's discovery is likely to enter our atmosphere at least once a year and explodes at about 4 times higher than airliners fly. If such an event happened at night and you were lucky enough to see it you would be treated to a fantastic light show. If you are as lucky as a power ball winner you might even be able to find a piece of it on the ground.

Happy Holidays to all of our InObscuriacs out there. Due to the abundance of amazing new releases in the world of rock n' punk n' metal, we are once again going to forego our annual Christmas episode for a 2-parter Shallow Graves 2024! At the end of every year, Kevin does a solo episode celebrating top releases of the year, but there are too many artists that Captain Content heard this year, where he said, “…I'd like a little more of that”! So, Kevin's Christmas present to the Captain is songs from artists that he said he dug… Hope you dig these 2025 tunes also! What is it we do here at InObscuria? This week it's the Captain's Birthday! How does Robert want to celebrate his annual trip around the sun??? With a heavy dose of rocket-powered SPACE GRUNGE!!! Back in Ep. 283's Space Rock episode, we heard the term “Space Grunge” to describe a band called Astronomie. Robert loved it and said that's what he wants for his Birthday. Harvard physicist Avi Loeb *probes* the possibility that a fast-moving interstellar object, 31 Atlas, might be an alien probe, not just a comet. While other scientists remain skeptical, citing ordinary physics, Loeb urges world leaders to prepare for extraterrestrial contact. This episode dives into the fine line between scientific speculation and sensationalism, questioning humanity's readiness for "close encounters" and whether we're jumping to "alien to the gaps" conclusions. It's a hilarious look at how even serious scientists can trigger an X-Files episode, highlighting the need for skepticism when wild theories eclipse peer review, and reminding us that perhaps aliens are just smart enough to leave us alone.News Source:Scientist challenges world leaders over mystery comet he fears could be alien probe but time is running outBy Alex Oliveira for New York PostAugust 10, 2025

Since there is a world wide market for meteorites some of which can be sold for millions of dollars, on line, the question of ownership becomes important.

If you are luckier than a hundred million dollar power ball winner you will see your space rock as a meteor streaking across the sky, fall to the ground, and land in a place where can you walk over and pick it up. On the other hand, with more persistence than luck you can find a space rock where it has been waiting for you on the surface of planet Earth . First you need a place to look. Dry lake beds have few surface rocks and can be a great place to find meteorites. There are strewn fields from known celestial falls that you can check out. On private land will you need the owner's permission. If you live near BLM land you can collect up to 10 lbs of meteorites a year without a special permit. Train your eye by looking at photos of meteorites and/or make a visit to a museum to view the real thing. A dark fusion crust is a clue. Thumbprint like surface features is another. A powerful magnet will tell you if your candidate has a high iron content consistent with meteorites An exciting new way to find freshly fallen space rocks involves the use of Doppler weather RADAR to track pieces of an exploding fireball on their way to Earth. There are web sites which can alert you to places to travel to and search.
Send us a textLaurent Schroeder-Lebec of Pelican joins the Vulgar Display of Podcast to discuss their highly anticipated 2025 U.S. tour with Russian Circles, kicking off at Delmar Hall in St. Louis on Monday, March 3rd. After returning to the band following Dallas Thomas' departure in 2022, Schroeder-Lebec brings fresh energy to Pelican's evolving sound, which is fully realized in their upcoming album, Flickering Resonance, released via Run For Cover Records.Since forming in 2000, Pelican has remained a defining force in instrumental heavy music, blending post-metal, doom, post-hardcore, and space-rock influences into a sound that is both crushing and deeply atmospheric. Flickering Resonance sees the band embracing a renewed sense of collaboration, reflecting on their journey while pushing forward into new sonic territories. With tracks like "Evergreen," "Indelible," and "Cascading Crescent," the album captures the beauty in resilience, transformation, and collective creativity.
This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and it has also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Cicadastone – “Dime A Dozen” from Cold Chamber (2021)A Pale Horse Named Death – “Heroin Train” from And Hell Will Follow Me (2011)Drain STH – “Serve The Shame (acoustic)” from Horror Wrestling (1998)EMBASSYROWE – “Volition” from Dreamliar (2024)Failure – “Let It Drip” from Magnified (1994)Seventh Void – “Shadow On Me” from Heaven Is Gone (2009)My Sister's Machine – “Wasting Time” from Diva (1992)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Happy Holidays to all of our ‘Scurians out there. Due to the abundance of amazing new releases in the world of rock n' punk n' metal, we will forego our annual Christmas episode for a 2-parter Shallow Graves 2024! At the end of every year, Kevin does a solo episode celebrating top releases of the year, but there are too many artists that Captain Content heard this year where he said, “…I'd like a little more of that”! So, Kevin's Christmas present to the Captain is songs from artists he said he dug… Hope you dig these 2024 tunes also! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look back on bands that released new rock n' punk n' metal in the year 2024 that piqued the Captain's interest. What if the past you remember didn't really happen? That's the simple premise of filmmaker Richard Bakewell's character-driven, science fiction drama, ROSWELL DELIRIUM, which centers around a young woman who survives nuclear disaster and alien encounters, only to slowly discover that the events she remembers are distorted by her traumatic experiences. The result is a powerful and compelling blend of genres, set against the backdrop of an alternate history of the 1980s. In “Roswell Delirium” (written, directed, and produced by Bakewell), we witness some of the key events in the life of the young heroine, Mayday “Firefly” Malone (winningly played by Kylee Levien as teenaged Mayday, and Ashton Solecki as the grown-up version). Living in New Mexico in the 1980s, with her emotionally distant father employed by NASA and not always home, Mayday is obsessed with ham radio and satellite communications. But in 1986, the US and USSR devolve into nuclear war: rural areas are unscathed but the resulting years of radiation poisoning mean a new existence where sudden illness, death, and decay become a way of life. Moving between an older, radiation-sick Firefly as she puts her belief into the healing powers of the “Space Rock” at Area 51, and the younger Mayday as the events of the world spin out of control, the film sees the events of this alt-history through the eyes of a smart, determined young woman who slowly comes to realize that all is not as she remembers. With a supporting cast that includes Anthony Michael Hall, Lisa Whelchel, Dee Wallace, Sam Jones, and Reginald VelJohnson, the film evokes it's alternate-1980s setting with loving precision and eye for detail.
