Today's 2 topics: - Recently, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Hannes Groller discovered an Earth approaching asteroid which has a speed consistent with it being ejected from the Moon by the impact of an asteroid or comet long ago. 69 hours after Hannes discovered it, this small space rock passed closer than the communication satellites are from us. - During Comet C/2018 V4 Africano's last visit to the inner solar system humans were erecting the outer ring at Stonehenge. Recently my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Vivian Carjaval was asteroid hunting in the constellation of Ursa Minor with our Schmidt telescope on Mt. Bigelow when she discovered, 2024 BR4, a two football field diameter Earth approaching asteroid.Vivian's Apollo asteroid discovery poses no threat to humans since 2024 is as close as it will come to Earth in the next few hundred years.

Perhaps the most dangerous Amor asteroid is 2006 HZ51 .It was discovered by my team the Catalina Sky Survey.  Fortunately the closest 2006 HZ51 will come to our home planet is  June 11 of 2116 when it will pass us harmlessly 26 times the distance to our moon away from us.

What a time it was. The surprise of Sputnik in the early fifties led to a space race, a technological competition that had a profound impact on popular music (not to mention popular culture), providing musicians (and would-be musicians) a rich source of inspiration and contributed to some of the most iconic, as well as comic and out of this world, songs of the era. My Catalina Sky Survey teammate David Rankin was being filmed and interviewed by the NASA 360 crew at our 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona when he discovered a scary space rock moving through the constellation of Aquarius at 13 mi/s.Rest assured that asteroid hunters will carefully keep track of 2023 VS3 to make sure that its orbit does not change to make it a threat in the distant future as it passes near to Earth, Mars, and other asteroids.

What if the past you remember didn't really happen? That's the simple premise of filmmaker Richard Bakewell's character-driven, science fiction drama, ROSWELL DELIRIUM, which centers around a young woman who survives nuclear disaster and alien encounters, only to slowly discover that the events she remembers are distorted by her traumatic experiences. The result is a powerful and compelling blend of genres, set against the backdrop of an alternate history of the 1980s. In “Roswell Delirium” (written, directed, and produced by Bakewell), we witness some of the key events in the life of the young heroine, Mayday “Firefly” Malone (winningly played by Kylee Levien as teenaged Mayday, and Ashton Solecki as the grown-up version). Living in New Mexico in the 1980s, with her emotionally distant father employed by NASA and not always home, Mayday is obsessed with ham radio and satellite communications. But in 1986, the US and USSR devolve into nuclear war: rural areas are unscathed but the resulting years of radiation poisoning mean a new existence where sudden illness, death, and decay become a way of life. Moving between an older, radiation-sick Firefly as she puts her belief into the healing powers of the “Space Rock” at Area 51, and the younger Mayday as the events of the world spin out of control, the film sees the events of this alt-history through the eyes of a smart, determined young woman who slowly comes to realize that all is not as she remembers. With a supporting cast that includes Anthony Michael Hall, Lisa Whelchel, Dee Wallace, Sam Jones, and Reginald VelJohnson, the film evokes it's alternate-1980s setting with loving precision and eye for detail. I had the esteemed pleasure of speaking with Mr. Richard Bakewell who is the Director and Producer of the new & upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller, "Roswell Delirium" which is slated to be released in March 2024. This movie has a star-studded cast starring Anthony Michael Hall, Reginald VelJohnson, and Dee Wallace with each individual significant role to play. Essentially, it's a movie about survival in Area 51. A young girl named Mayday tries to make contact on a series of ham radios with her father who is in space on a shuttle mission. Instead of making contact she receives an intergalactic distress call from space that leads her on a journey to Spacerock, the land where Area 51 once was. The extremely remote chance that a dangerous mountain sized space rock has our number on it is what keeps my team going to our four telescopes in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona.

Millions of years ago two large asteroids collided in the asteroid belt. Pieces were sent flying in all directions. A few of them were put into orbits which rise high above and below the plane of the solar system as they continued to travel around the Sun. A fragment is discovered from a collision long ago as it comes near the Earth. Fortunately this space rock will not strike the Earth anytime soon. It will continue to orbit the Sun in the silent vacuum of space until it has a collision with another asteroid or comet in the far distant future.

Recently, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Hannes Groller discovered an Earth approaching asteroid which has a speed consistent with it being ejected from the Moon by the impact of an asteroid or comet long ago. 69 hours after Hannes discovered it, this small space rock passed closer than the communication satellites are from us.
