This weeks episode of Synthetic Dreams features Scottish musician, Robin Guthrie, one of the co-founders of the legendary band, The Cocteau Twins, who are arguably one of the most influential bands of all-time. Guthrie, who was Cocteau's principal songwriter, guitarist, bassist and keyboardist, has released several collaborative albums with the acclaimed ambient composer and pianist, the late Harold Budd, as well as production work for a number of artists, including The Gun Club, Edwin Collins, Lush and Ian McCulloch. As well as talking about his solo work, Robin also discusses his time in The Cocteau Twins and sheds light on how their beautiful music was created. His new E.P ‘Atlas' is out now

Joining me on the Synthetic Dreams podcast this week Australian musician, Karen Vogt. Karen's experimental and ambient solo works are based around improvisation, often manipulating her vocals to add layers of emotional depth to her works. Vogt, who is based in Paris, spoke to me about the recording of her wonderful, improvised record ‘Waterlog', which deals with the grief she experienced following the death of her beloved cat. It's a truly wonderful album, that's full of depth and emotion, yet uplifting and comforting at the same time. The pioneering story of the Veldt is a one of one. Twin black brothers from North Carolina in the 80s embrace the alternative rock coming from the UK and record their debut album in 1989 with Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins producing! The album was shelved, but they did get a couple great albums out in the 90s (Afrodisiac is especially excellent) but it never really takes off mainly because labels don't know what to do with black guys making alternative rock. They've soldiered on over the years releasing consistently great music and touring, converting skeptical audiences along the way. Today they are celebrating that Guthrie album, Illuminated 1989, finally being released. Pioneering shoegazers, THE VELDT recently released an original Robin Guthrie-produced single called, "The Everlasting Gobstopper." It's the first taste of their 'Illuminated 1989' album, a release of which has been anticipated for decades. Produced by Cocteau Twin's Robin Guthrie in 1989 and more recently remastered by Guthrie, the record was intended to be the band's first album, however their label Capitol Records shelved the recording until now.  The album is set to be released on November 24, 2023 via 5BC Records and Disc Drive.One of the most notable first-wave shoe gaze bands, the Veldt was formed in North Carolina in the 1980s by  identical twins Danny Chavis (Guitarist) and Daniel Chavis (Vocalist, guitarist) .  Their unique sound was influenced by The Cocteau Twins, however the brothers musical roots goes back to the church and southern juke- joints, and listening to music that included gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd. Last year, Lush lead singer Miki Berenyi released one of the greatest memoirs ever written by a rock star, of which there are many. She grew up in the UK with a Hungarian dad and a Japanese mom who soon divorced with her mom becoming an actress and moving to Hollywood, while her dad remained a freelance writer living in relative squalor. Miki found her tribe in the local music scene which led to her and Emma Anderson forming Lush. After three solid albums and the tragic suicide of drummer Chris Acland, the band called it quits. Miki retells all of this in amazing detail in Fingers Crossed in 2022 as well as touring with Lollapalooza, working with Robin Guthrie, her new band Piroshka, and the inherent drama (sex, drugs and rock and roll) that come with being in a band. Thunderlove Studio is less a physical place and more a state of mind. What a treat it was to welcome Daniel Chavis, lead singer of The Veldt, into Thunderlove Studio. Anywho, you may or may not have heard of The Veldt. From where I sit, you should have. As Daniel and I chatted, there may have been several reasons they may not have achieved the type of widespread commercial success back in the early to mid-90s - the least of which is their sound. The Veldt - the band name taken from a Ray Bradbury short story - is often categorized as a “shoegaze” band. Pitchfork included their 1994 classic Afrodisiac in their “Top 50 Shoegaze Albums of All Time” list. Over the past month, The Veldt has released a couple of songs bourne from those initial Robin Guthrie sessions - “The Everlasting Gobstopper” and “Aurora Borealis” - on their Bandcamp page. Daniel told me that they're hoping to drop the whole Guthrie-produced set at the end of September. Discovering The Veldt has been a real treat and they're exactly the kind of band that makes this Abandoned Albums journey so much fun. I got to talk with Daniel about the band's origin, being a black rock band, the influence of Afrodisiac, and WTF “White Music For Black People” means. Gummies were eaten. Stories were told. The Veldt - "The Everlasting Gobstopper," a 2023 single on 5BC Records. Flashback to 1989. North Carolina-based identical twins Daniel and Danny Chavis had formed The Veldt just a few years before, inspired by soul, Sun Ra, and shoegaze. They began recording the LP The Everlasting Gobstopper with Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie on production, but despite this dream pairing, their label, Capitol Records, shelved the project.  Jump back to 2023, and the album will finally see the light of day, via The Veldt's own 5BC Records. Guthrie has returned to remaster the LP, and the album features backing vocals from his Cocteau Twins bandmate Liz Fraser. While the full album won't be out until the fall, the group has shared the title track as a teaser.  “As the benchmark of the new sound we had started to develop, The Everlasting Gobstopper was a throwback to our younger days of our family getting together on holidays, when Willy Wonka would be playing, and the certain atmosphere would be filled with a sense of love and security,” Daniel Chavis shared in a press release. “Upon reminiscing about this, my brother Danny came up with a riff and then called it The Everlasting Gobstopper as a lullaby to put his baby daughter to sleep. Thus was born this sound that would develop into what we have right now. This is significant – the birth of the sound that we have come to develop until present, because back then we were quite a different band. These days, it comes in many varieties: acoustic and electric, folk and classical, nylon and steel string, slide and electronic—to name a few. And when it comes to creating ambient music, the kind of guitar matters quite a bit. Acoustic guitar tends toward classic tunings and slow tempos, with conservative use of effects; electric guitar is almost the opposite, with aggressive use of effects, feedback, and modifiers. And though the results vary widely, it's still recognizable as a guitar. But with the electronic guitar, you might never know the sound came from a guitar at all—the instrument has been redefined, dematerialized, and effectively disappeared. The guitar becomes a playable "user interface"—a familiar way to control synthesizers and other electronics. In the early 1970s, English guitarist ROBERT FRIPP (of the seminal progressive rock band KING CRIMSON) began a series of experiments with tape delay echo loops that he came to call "Frippertronics." Fripp's collaboration with fellow electronic experimentalist BRIAN ENO yielded two influential albums of treated electric guitar and synthesizers. NO PUSSYFOOTING (from 1972) and EVENING STAR (in 1974) defined a new sound: the infinite spatial guitar. Whether endlessly looped or indefinitely sustained, Fripp transformed, expanded and dematerialized the electric guitar by feeding it back on itself — and created one of the foundations of today's ambient soundscapes. “The Faraway” Sometimes people say the same things about a person because they're true. For example, Bowie was always described as being mercurial. Why? Because he was. The word intensity always comes up when discussing the work of Daniel Day Lewis for the exact same reason. When it comes to explaining the sounds that come from Robin Guthrie's guitar, critics and fans tend to immediately go to the term ethereal as a default descriptor of the Scottish-born musician. And ethereal isn't far off the mark, because his playing is indeed perfect in a way that seems not of this world, but it also might be a lazy way of saying that he sounds like nobody else who's picked up the guitar. But that might be a lazy way of saying that his sound is ethereal and heavenly and otherworldly. You see the problem. The fact is, Robin Guthrie is a master craftsman whose notes swirl and sting and float and churn. It's magical playing and that's all there is to it. Wether you're a fan of the Cocteau Twins or his work with Harold Budd or his band Violet Indiana or his arresting solo albums, Guthrie is a staggering player. And he's an intuitive producer, sitting behind the board for everyone from Felt to the Gun Club to Lush. His new album Pearldiving is a stone cold stunner and his new EPS Riviera and Springtime are equally brilliant. Robin Guthrie  in conversation with David Eastaugh 40 years on from founding Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie has certainly been its most prolific member, offering a steady and stellar stream of material over the years. His film scores include Gregg Araki's ‘Mysterious Skin' and ‘White Bird in a Blizzard', co-written with longtime collaborator Harold Budd. His many other collaborators include John Foxx, Mark Gardener, Telefon Tel-Aviv, Eraldo Bernocchi and Jay Jay Johanson. Following the October release of his 'Mockingbird Love' EP and the November release of his full-length album 'Pearldiving' (his first album in nine years) comes another unique release by legendary Scottish music sculptor Robin Guthrie - the 4-track 'Riviera' EP, a collection completed earlier this year..  The 'Riviera' EP is available on limited-edition CD and as a digital download via Soleil Après Minuit with distribution in North America via Darla and in Europe by Cargo.

Scottish musician, prolific composer and audio engineer, Robin Guthrie is one of the founders of the legendary band, The Cocteau Twins. Throughout the band's history, Guthrie was the principal songwriter, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and handling most of the programming and effects. In addition to his ongoing work as a producer and engineer, his musical career included his collaboration with Siobhan de Mare and co-founding the band Violet Indiana. As the guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter for The Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie's unique sonic palette helped spearhead and popularize the dream pop sub-genre, with songs that emerged like hazy daydreams through his unique combination of melody and his focused use of effects on albums like 'Treasure', 'Blue Bell Knoll' and 'Heaven or Las Vegas.' During that time, Guthrie also did extensive production work for a variety of artists including The Wolfgang Press, The Gun Club, A.R. Kane, Lush, Ian McCulloch, Guy Chadwick and The Veldt. While the Cocteau Twins folded in 1997, Guthrie forged ahead, continuing to produce, and also collaborating with artists like the late Harold Budd (including their score for the 2004 film Mysterious Skin), John Foxx, Mark Gardener among others. In addition, Guthrie has also led a prolific and engaging career all his own, and speaking of, he's back after a 9 year absence with both an EP ('Mockingbird Love') and a full-length album ('Pearldiving') both of which showcase his inimitable, ethereal and emotive sound through evocative instrumentals. In today's interview, Guthrie discusses why he's been away for so long, why he decided to put out two releases so close together, his creative process and signature sound, his memories of working with Harold Budd, the legacy and influence of The Cocteau Twins, and much more.
