POPULARITY
In this episode we were lucky enough to catch up with two Kscope artists who both have new music to share with us. Firstly, we hear from Iamthemorning's virtuoso pianist Gleb Kolyadin who is celebrating the release of his solo album Mobula which takes listeners on a journey through cosmic landscapes, where imagination transforms the ordinary. Then our host Billy Reeves chats with Colin Edwin (ex Porcupine Tree) about the upcoming album from his band O.R.k, who have been teasing this release with singles for the last 6 months so it really is a long awaited release! The new album Firehose of Falsehoods marks another chapter in the band's ever-evolving exploration of progressive, alternative, and art rock and captures O.R.k.'s signature mix of spontaneity, intricacy, and supreme musicianship.

Plus, Andy, Phil and Clark from the newest band to the label, Ihlo, talk to Billy Reeves about their excitement of having their debut album “Union” get the Kscope treatment with a beautiful CD and double LP out this week which is remastered by Acle Kahney of TesseracT. Celebrated composer and guitarist Jon Durant joins us on this episode of Big Blend Radio's TOAST TO THE ARTS podcast where he discusses his new album "Momentarily." It's an amalgamation of transcultural, jazz-related styles, that gives way to euphoric, universally relatable grooves and soundscapes. YENZ STRUTZ LEAD SINGER/SONGWRITER/BASSIST AND FOUNDER OF GERMAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP CRYSTAL PALACE ZOOM TV SPECIAL EVENT ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Crystal Palace were founded in Berlin, Germany, in the early 1990s. The band received worldwide attention with the release of the Best-of-CD “Through the Years” in (2005), enabling Crystal Palace to perform live regularly with other international artists at various festivals in Europe. In 2011, divergent musical interests emerged within the band, resulting in a new line-up. This line-up turned out to be creative and harmonious, enabling the band to go on tour with the well-known German progressive rock band RPWL. The band recorded the album “The System of Events” in early 2013 with guest artists Colin Edwin of (Porcupine Tree) and Kalle Wallner and Yogi Lang of (RPWL). Crystal Palace was eventually signed by German label “Gentle Art of Music”. In 2016 the band's most successful album until that point, “Dawn Of Eternity”, was released. The album reached #17 in the International AOR-charts. Crystal Palace released “Scattered Shards” in 2018. The band changed labels and decided to go with Progressive Promotion. An important reason for this change was to show that the band can arrange their music without prominent support. The sound of the band is characterized by melodic passages and instrumentally well worked-out themes that, when listened to carefully, entice the listener to sink into a pleasurable musical experience with their own imaginative thoughts.
Consider the guitar, spacefans. it's arguably our most ubiquitous instrument. These days, it comes in many varieties: acoustic and electric, folk and classical, nylon and steel string, slide and electronic—to name a few. And when it comes to creating ambient music, the kind of guitar matters quite a bit. Acoustic guitar tends toward classic tunings and slow tempos, with conservative use of effects; electric guitar is almost the opposite, with aggressive use of effects, feedback, and modifiers. And though the results vary widely, it's still recognizable as a guitar. But with the electronic guitar, you might never know the sound came from a guitar at all—the instrument has been redefined, dematerialized, and effectively disappeared. The guitar becomes a playable "user interface"—a familiar way to control synthesizers and other electronics. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the evolving world of the ambient guitar, on a program called TRANSLUCENT GUITARS. Music is by TOM CAUFIELD, COLIN EDWIN & JON DURANT, CRAIG PADILLA & MARVIN ALLEN, JOHN GREGORIUS, DARSHAN AMBIENT, ROBIN GUTHRIE, HAMMOCK, CARL WEINGARTEN, JUHA-MATTI RAUTIAINEN, JEFF PEARCE, and DELAY TACTICS. A long chat on the Kscope sofa with COLIN EDWIN, who you may know best as the bassist of PORCUPINE TREE as there's a new O.R.k. album out entitled SCREAMNASIUM out now. The band features award-winning vocalist/composer LEF, KING CRIMSON's PAT MASTELOTTO and the unique guitar of CARMELO PIPITONE as well as Col's bottom end. We hear what happened re: Colin's exclusion from PORCUPINE TREE and how he feels about it, why the new O.R.k. set turned out how it did, what happens to Pat at border control, and our genial host BILLY REEVES hears “Einstürzende Neubauten” spoken out loud for the first time ever. Plus new music from KLONE, EMPYRE, JOHNATHAN HULTÉN and a half-speed master from GAZPACHO…
O.R.k are a brilliantly pieced together rock outfit featuring former Porcupine Tree member Colin Edwin (bass), celebrated Italian vocalist, producer, and award-winning film score composer Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari a.k.a LEF (lead vocals), King Crimson's Pat Mastelotto (drums) and Marta Sui Tubi's Carmelo Pipitone (guitars).By entering a fresh and tantalising sonic plane through clever use of experimentation in their music, O.R.k recently released their fourth studio album Screamnasium, an epicly grandioise slab of rock that captures the band at the peak of their career.Edwin sat down with HEAVY recently to talk about the album."We were really happy with Ramagehead, which was our previous album," he began. "I felt it was going to be really tough to better that. You don't wanna do something that isn't as strong as what you've done before, so it felt a bit... We wanted to do another record but are we gonna be able to bring it all down and make it happen and make it as solid as the previous one? I think we achieved that. It's sonically better. It's more direct, it's got more emotion in it. It's an album that I would say is our best one, and I also think it's the album we've been trying to make since we first started, if that makes sense. It's like, everybody's at their peak creatively."In the full interview, Colin talks more about Screamnasium, what they were going for musically with the album, the artwork and what it represents, having Grammy award winning vocalist Elisa on one of the songs, the use of cellist Jo Quail and what she brought to the structure, how O.R.k have changed musically over their four album career and more.
In today's podcast episode I talk about maybe the "best known unknown" band that exists in modern rock & metal: Porcupine Tree! The band started as a solo project of British musician Steven Wilson and (at the time of this recording) has just released their totally unexpected comeback album "Closure/Continuation" after 12-13 years of hiatus! One more reason to introduce this really creative and progressive band to a new audience! In this episode I talk about the studio albums and world class songs that Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri, Gavin Harrison, Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland recorded together. Have fun (re)discovering a band that, in my opinion, has long deserved to be even better known!
This week I'm sitting down to talk bass with one of the greatest bass players of modern prog rock: Colin Edwin. Colin Edwin is most well known as bass player in Porcupine Tree, one of the biggest prog bands of the last 30 years that split up in 2010. He's also played with Henry Fool, Tim Bowness, O.R.k and has also released four of his own solo album including his latest 2020 release Infinite Regress. In this interview Colin gives us an insight into his musical background and jazz influences as well as his interest in odd time signatures, playing with Gavin Harrison and much more. In this episode of MRC, I jump into a musical genre a bit outside my usual comfort zone. Eternal Return is an interesting new post-rock/ambient/experimental project that entered my radar because of the involvement of Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin. The five musicians in Eternal Return all started the project while living in different countries and got together in Germany to record the album before the pandemic. The core of the group is the ambient duo Dogon (Paul Godwin and Miguel Noya), along with Edwin, Estonian guitarist Robert Jürjendal, and drummer Miguel Toro. I spoke with Paul, Robert, and Miguel Noya about the making of this record, its theme of nomadism, and their process. You can check them out on Spotify or other streaming services, and visit their Bandcamp site here. I appreciate you listening! Please hit the like button and leave a rating/review on your podcast service of choice. You can read my Michael's Record Collection newsletter for free by signing up here.

Inspired by the unspoken and hidden truths behind our daily reality, “Emergent” is the third in a trilogy of collaborative works by bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree/Metallic Taste of Blood/O.R.k etc) and experimental US guitarist Jon Durant, under the working name Burnt Belief. “Emergent” builds on the duo's previous work whilst still exploring the fundamental aspects that define Burnt Belief's sonic world, namely hypnotic rhythmic elements seamlessly blended with lush guitar led soundscapes and deep ambient atmospherics. “Emergent” also showcases the intense and unpredictable, yet satisfying guitar playing from Durant, who manages to tame elemental, skittish and frequently unsettling tones, by subtly wrapping them in layers of magnetic aura. Drumming throughout is Vinny Sabatino, who brings an inventive, muscular and precise beat to complement Colin Edwin's expansive and expressive fretless and upright basses.
