To be human is to have seasons, to have cycles, to have movements of highs and moments of lows, and let's not forget everything in between. How we hold space for ourselves as business owners in all of these seasons is how we ensure our long-term business success. Can you not let the lows mean anything? Can we sit in the discomfort of something not selling? Can we not let the highs be moments we miss, or don't celebrate, or worst still, tell ourselves we can't keep this up? Can we allow ourselves to be in the space of the in-between, where we are open to receiving and just getting on with those everyday tasks and life. It's all needed, it's all neutral, it's all part of being human, can we let it all exist! As a business coach, I not only practice holding space for myself through my seasons, but for my clients too. In fact, I show up more when my clients are in a low moment, guiding them through this and seizing the opportunity that is there is something I love doing. Navigating this alone is nearly impossible. I invite you not to. Summary In this episode of Startup Junkies, hosts Daniel Koonce, Jeff Amerine, and Harrison Kitson sit down with Anna Buckley, the dynamic founder of PICNiC. Balancing a full-time job and a burgeoning side hustle, Anna embodies the spirit of modern entrepreneurship. Based in Washington, D.C., by way of Arkansas, Anna brings innovative solutions to classic designs, filling gaps in the market and elevating everyday dining experiences. PICNiC, launched in March, was born from Anna's desire to create durable and aesthetically pleasing cabbageware—plates inspired by the timeless cabbage design but made from hard plastic melamine. The idea sprouted during a planned picnic on the D.C. National Mall. Frustrated by the lack of durable, non-ceramic cabbageware plates available, Anna saw an opportunity and seized it. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 2023 with a degree in finance, Anna moved to D.C. to start her career at Ernst & Young (EY) as a business consultant. Her entrepreneurial spirit, however, couldn't be contained. Leveraging her time management skills and type-A personality, she worked tirelessly after hours to bring PICNiC to life. By September, her products were ready, marking a significant milestone in her journey. Anna's entrepreneurial drive was evident even in college, where she interned at Startup Junkie and participated in the Student Activity and Curriculum Enhancement (S.A.K.E.) program. These experiences laid the foundation for her current success, providing her with invaluable insights and mentorship. As PICNiC grows, Anna envisions expanding her product line and engaging in more collaborations. Through her journey, she aims to inspire and mentor budding entrepreneurs, sharing her story to show that with passion and perseverance, one can indeed balance business and personal interests. Folks, our 100th episode is next week. Can you believe it? As we lead up to this big celebration, we wanted to re-post an old show that we think is very important. Our company, LifeStarr, supports solopreneurs in all phases of their solo businesses and as much as we are cheerleaders for running a company of one, that doesn't mean everybody is cut out for it...and that's OK. But that begs the question...when do you keep going and when do you throw in the towel and realize solopreneurship isn't right for you? It's hard to make the right decision when you're so connected to it. It's often helpful to hear stories about other solopreneurs who have been in this situation, so in this episode, Joe shares his successes and failures and what kept him going (or didn't). We hope you can learn something from him! Oh, and if you haven't yet, be sure to leave us a 5-star review! ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Being a solopreneur is awesome but not easy. It's hard to get noticed. In this episode, Troy asked Josh Green, Founder and CEO of The Tangible Plan based in Vancouver, the final five questions: What do you think is the most challenging part of growing a small business: Josh highlights the most significant hurdle in business growth: getting out of your own way. He emphasizes that it's not always about the numbers but often about overcoming emotional barriers. Josh's advice is to ditch excuses, find specific steps, seek mentors, and build confidence to overcome self-doubt. The key is to be yourself and not conform to society's expectations. Josh's favorite business book is "Good to Great." He values the concept of having the right people in the right seats at the right time, which can be a game-changer for any business. Regarding professional development Josh recommends Michael Kitces's podcast for the FinTech world, our podcast Grow a small business podcast, and "Living My Side Hustle." These resources provide valuable insights into growing businesses, especially for those new to entrepreneurship. Josh suggests an effective tool for small business growth is a business plan. He emphasizes its importance and can't stress it enough as the best tool for business growth. Finally if Josh could go back to day one of starting out, he would advise my younger self to slow down. He acknowledges that impatience led to risky decisions that caused business failures. His advice is to find manageable risks, mitigate them, and stick to the plan. Today we will be discussing the concept of Key Performance Indices (KPIs) and their importance in measuring success. A KPI is essentially a measurable value that shows the progress towards a specific goal. For instance, weight is a common KPI for many people. However, the challenge with this type of KPI is that it is a lagging indicator, meaning it only tells us what has already happened, not what is going to happen. In a business setting, it is more valuable to use leading indicators, which are KPIs that predict future outcomes, in order to make adjustments and achieve our goals. For example, as a solo entrepreneur, we may be most concerned with the amount of money our business makes, whether it be revenue or profit. However, once January is over and we know how much money we made, it is too late to make adjustments to achieve our goal of growing our business in 2023. That's why we need to be measuring things that are related to actually achieving the goal, not only measuring whether or not we achieved the goal after the fact. One example of a leading indicator in a business setting could be using affiliate marketing as a way to predict and potentially achieve a goal. By closely monitoring the progress and success of our affiliate marketing efforts, we can make informed decisions on how to adjust and improve in order to reach our desired outcome. In conclusion, leading indicators are crucial for predicting and achieving business goals. We hope you found this information valuable, and encourage you to look into more resources on KPIs and leading indicators to take your business to the next level.

Is Artificial Intelligence taking over the content industry? Actually, AI created that title for this podcast. I wanted to break down this question of AI and try and understand the future of AI. We've been talking about AI in terms of SEO for a long time. And I think recently one of the concerns people have had is what the role of artificial intelligence will be when it comes to creating content. We cover that in this episode.
Grab a pen and paper before you press play for this episode because it's full of good tips and takeaways. I had the opportunity to chat with Etel Igreda from Blossom CPA. Etelvina Igreda, aka Etel, is the Founder and Director of Blossom CPA in Toronto, Ontario. After working in corporate environments for some time, she started her own firm to grow professional happiness for herself and create positive change for her Creative clients. Etel describes herself as an accountant by trade and an entrepreneur by choice. Besides having her business baby, Etel am a mom of 3 and wife of 1. Fun side note: If Etel didn't go the business route she would have become a professional translator: she loves learning languages, language rules, and interacting with people. Blossom CPA is a modern accounting firm where they leverage technology to solve process bottlenecks for their clients, provides peace of mind with Advisory Services, and helps businesses be compliant (and meet CRA deadlines). I asked Etel to come on the podcast to talk about how you can set up your business for financial success. The purpose of this episode is to empower you with a better sense of how you can manage the financials in your business (new or old). Through the episode, Etel shares what it means to incorporate your business if you should do it, and why. She also speaks to the benefits of being a sole proprietor and provides some great tips for your year-end and what is actually considered revenue in your business. We speak further about the typical audit type that designers can face, how to set up your business bank accounts, and various software you can use to keep you organized throughout the year (whether you're a solo or have a team). Lastly, you won't want to miss the financial and other business definitions that Etel explains, some that took me YEARS to understand. This episode will help you set your business up for success from the beginning, and help you realize that it's the little things that you do throughout the year that will keep you on track. You can Etel at www.blossomcpa.ca, email at etel@blossomcpa.ca, and on Instagram @BlossomCPA.

In this episode Melissa shares frankly how she managed to take maternity leave and focus on her child, while also keeping her business running. In fact, she says that having a baby has made her a better business owner! Melissa talks in detail about the importance of planning, how to remain flexible and why it is important to evaluate your purpose for the long-term benefit of you and your business.
