The holiday crooner says his most famous Christmas song was originally composed for a school reunion. Jose Mari Chan occasionally breaks out into song as he talks about his earliest years as a songwriter, and reveals that he created Tagalog ballads popularized by others—as well as a few other tunes you might find familiar. Listen to this conversation recorded on August 11, 2022.
Christmas in Our Hearts is the Philippines' bestselling album of all time, with its eponymous title song heralding the holidays every year on September 1. But for each of Jose Mari Chan's hits such as “Beautiful Girl” and “Please Be Careful With My Heart” are hundreds of other songs and compositions that failed. When he was a teenager, his father told him his voice was ordinary and to just make music his hobby and run the family business instead. He listened—and was a massive success in both. His hobby turned into a musical career that has lasted over five decades, throughout which his guiding motto has been “The blow that doesn't break me only strengthens me.” Hosted on Acast. What makes Christmas different in the Philippines? How do we celebrate Christmas when we're so far away from home? For Filipino immigrants, Christmas is when we feel more sad and homesick. It can be especially challenging to feel like we're part of the celebrations back home. But even though we're away from our families and loved ones, we still create our own little Christmas traditions that make us feel close to home. Jose "Joe" Mari Lim Chan (born March 11, 1945) is a Filipino singer, TV host, songwriter and businessman in the sugar industry. He is currently chairman and CEO of Binalbagan Isabela Sugar Company, Inc. and A. Chan Sugar Corporation. He is also the chairman and president of Signature Music, Inc. When I met Jose Mari Chan in a Zoom room with the Global Woman Club Manila and their wonderful director Rayla Allertsen, I knew, that I needed to take this opportunity and ask him to be my podcast guest and he said yes. In this interview Jose Mari tells me about how his father left China and went to live in the Philippines, how he met his wife and why he loves Switzerland. One of Chan's most famous song is "Christmas in our hearts" which has become a Filipino Christmas classic but many other Christmas songs and this phenomenon that earned him the unofficial title of “the king of Christmas". In the Philippines, the build up to Christmas starts on September 1, and truth to be told, when Rayla recently arrived at Manila airport from a trip abroad, she was welcomed home with Jose Mari Chan's music. According to Wazzup.ph, the three most famous characters during Christmas season are: 1. Jesus Christ, 2. Santa Claus, 3. Jose Mari Chan He is a wonderful, warm person and he sang for me and for you if you listen. Please subscribe, comment, like, and share this podcast with your family, loved ones, and friends. Lapit na mag start yung -ber months so lalabas na ulit si Jose Mari Chan hahaha but other than that, madami din tayo mga dividend paying stocks with ex-dates this September. Although karamihan sa kanila are preferred stocks, I think it's still viable to have some of these stocks in your portfolio. Especially if you're just building up your dividend stock portfolio and medyo risk averse ka pa. Swak na swak tong list na to para sa'yo. LOVE - a four-letter word that sounds as simple as it is complicated but at the end of the day, we all agreed that a majority of Filipinx are suckers for romance. In this episode, we go into a deep dive on what we've learned about love, what we think about love, and we shared some of our KILIG moments that some of us are embarrassed to admit. We also play some love songs that we had to cut short to avoid copyright issues with good 'ole YouTube. He prefers to be called "Little Drummer Boy" rather than "Father Christmas". A very inspiring conversation, for sure.
