Fr. Mike focuses on the last words Joshua speaks to the people of Israel, and how he calls them to choose the Lord above all other things. We all have idols in our lives that take us away from God; how are we choosing to love Christ above these idols today? Today's readings are Joshua 22-24, and Psalm 132. Originally sung by reggae band The Melodians, and made internationally famous by Boney M, the lyrics about exiles weeping by Babylon's rivers were written thousands of years earlier by a scribe who remembered the desolation felt by his captive people. Modern day fame has catapulted this psalm into the public consciousness but it conceals horrors that are less well known. Psalm 137 is a song of both grief and revenge against the people who attempted to destroy Israel and its children.Written and produced by Chas Bayfield.Music by Michael Auld and Jon Hawkins MusicCover art by Lisa Goff

The Ark of the Covenant was cherished by the people, but also feared, because this was where the Holy God promised his presence. And the holy and the unholy just don't mix. That's a truth that Old Testament believer knew well. It was built into their worship life. And this is still true today. We have no right to stand before a perfectly holy God, nor could we. God made a plan to solve this and this plan is embedded in a conversation that God has with David (through the prophet Nathan) in 2 Samuel 7. In this conversation, we hear the promise of the Savior, who would be God in the flesh, who would come to save us from our sins. Jesus made his home with us to make us holy. The Holy Spirit makes his home in us through faith. And one day, we will be at home with Jesus forever in heaven, where we will be perfectly holy. Let us go to the sanctuary of the Lord; let us worship at the footstool of his throne. (Psalm 132:7 NLT) The Bible doesn't tell us much about the boyhood years of Jesus. But it does give us an instance where Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration, and they took twelve-year-old Jesus with them. Then they made the journey back home. In those days, the men and women traveled separately. Joseph thought that Jesus was with Mary. And Mary thought that Jesus was with Joseph. But then they realized they had lost Jesus. So, they frantically made their way back to Jerusalem. They found Him in the temple three days later, where He was speaking with the elders. Jesus said to them, “Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?” (Luke 2:49 NLT). Imagine the panicked couple running around town, asking people if they had seen their son. We can become so busy, especially at this time of year, that we don't have time for God. We can be so busy celebrating Christmas that we lose Jesus. We string the lights, trim the tree, and buy the gifts. And during all this busyness, we can forget all about the Lord. We can lose Jesus just like Mary and Joseph did. We Americans are so busy. You could write on our tombstones, “Hurried. Worried. Buried.” We're always rushing about, and that is more evident at Christmas than at any other time of year. Lines are long and tempers are short. We think Christmas will bring us some measure of happiness. But after so much buildup, Christmas can be a letdown. Then there is the mess and cleaning up. Soon the bills start arriving, and reality kicks in. Experts tell us that calls to psychiatrists and emergency rooms increase during this time of year. That is because Christmas can't measure up to its romanticized image. So many of us say, “I would like to make time for God, but I am just so busy. I work too hard and don't have any time in my schedule. I would like to go to church, but there just isn't time for that. I would like to read my Bible, but I just can't find the time.” However, we find time for what is important to us. It seems the only place where there ever was room for Jesus was on a cross where He died for the sins of the world. Ironically, Jesus Himself said, “There is more than enough room in my Father's home” (John 14:2 NLT). We don't have room for Him, but He has many rooms for us. Jesus took His place in a manger so that we could have a home in Heaven. So, let's forget about the clutter and hype and replace it with the Christ of Christmas. Then it will be great. It is not about Christmas presents; it is about His presence in our lives. The message of the season is not “let it snow” or “let us shop.” It is “let us worship.” If we will focus on that, then Christmas will be a blessed time for us. — Listen to the Greg Laurie Podcast Become a Harvest PartnerSupport the show: https://harvest.org/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The final three songs of this division in the Psalter introduced by Psalm 132 all include references to the apex of the songs of the ascent. The destination and desire of every faithful pilgrim is poetically proclaimed in these songs. “May the Lord grant us entry to the place of his dwelling and the fullness of covenant promises fulfilled”, the authors cry.  Psalm 132 is structured around four weighty symbolic references to the communion of God and man pictured in the temple worship order revealed to Moses and later restored and enhanced under David & Solomon. Each reference contains an appeal to prophetic assurances proclaimed in years past which grounds the author's prayerful worship.  Answers to the heart cry of Ps 132 all hinge on one central confession & petition expressed in verse 10.  Here the singer pleads for the presence & favor of YAHWEH's anointed one to visit them face to face.  Appropriately, centuries later, the angel Gabriel would reveal to Mary the child conceived in her womb by the power of the Holy Spirit was the heir to David's throne.  The anointed Messiah worshipped in Psalm 132 had visited His people to save and to rule forever!

Waterbrooke Family, This Sunday's sermon was taken from Psalm 132 and is a glorious picture of Jesus' love for us, His bride, the church. The message is called “The King at Rest.”  It's a picture of the King and his Bride finally living together in unity and love and peace for all eternity.  This past week was our nephew and niece's 13th wedding anniversary. They shared a picture of the wedding ceremony which was outdoors in Michigan. In the middle of the wedding, a huge rain shower broke out. The pictures are classic because they show not frowns but smiles on the drenched couple. It didn't matter to them because they were in love. They were getting married that day and they turned rainclouds into a big joyous wedding party. Where they focused made all the difference, not just on their wedding day but on the next 13 years to come. I think that is helpful to us.  We often focus on the problems with the church. We can begin to take on the perpetual cynicism of the culture rather than the perpetual love and grace of Christ towards his bride. This Sunday, I am going to ask you to commit yourself to pray for our church, Waterbrooke Church. However, I am going to ask you to pray like the pilgrims in Psalm 132 who journeyed towards Jerusalem. Pray for the church with the perspective of Jesus for His bride. It will radically transform who you see, pray, and love the church. Listen and be encouraged. In Christ, Kevin Dibbley, Senior Pastor
