Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. Our guest is Jean H. Lee, an American journalist who has covered both North and South Korea extensively. Jean is also the co-host of the BBC World Service podcast, The Lazarus Heist. She tells us more about the relationship between the two countries. The programme begins with the historic meeting between North and South Korea's leaders almost 50 years after the Korean War. We hear from Sameh Elbarky who was in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya Square on the day the army killed hundreds of protestors following a military coup. In the second half of the programme, British black activists recount how they protested against racism within the local bus company in Bristol in 1963. One of the first Chinese students to arrive in the US in the early 1980s following the Cultural Revolution shares her experience. Finally, how the Mexican island of Guadalupe was saved from being destroyed by hungry goats. Contributors: Jean H. Lee - American journalist and the co-host of the BBC's The Lazarus Heist podcast. Finishing touches have been attended. Crowd barriers put in place. Potential dissidents rounded up. And city streets swept to an immaculate tidiness. So with two very prominent players left sitting on the sidelines, Korea’s financial capital is now ready to showcase its grandeur under the international spotlight as the Choe government prepares to host their first international summit in the city of Seoul. Leaders from eleven Asian Pacific Rim nations will gather in two days to discuss trade, defense, cultural, and economic unity in a new Asian community absent of American influence. And it appears Korea’s ultimate strategy is to also form an alliance of Pacific Rim nations with neither a Chinese nor a Russian influence in the region. A strategy which most observers see as, most likely, an impossibility.Support Our Podcast - Find 1st Amendment News T-Shirts and Travel Mugs at:https://www.zazzle.com/store/pop_and_kks_place/products Support the show (https://paypal.me/1stAmendmentNewsPodc?locale.x=en_US)

In a marathon meeting, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to a demilitarized buffer zone in Idlib. It would separate regime and opposition forces and would be enforced by Turkish and Russian soldiers. Is it a step towards peace or just delaying an inevitable bloodbath? Also It had been 11 years since a South Korean president stepped foot in Pyongyang. Moon Jae-in travelled to the North where he and Kim Jong-un discussed an end to North Korea's nuclear programme, building a joint-economy, and the possibility of reunification.

The meeting in Singapore between President Donald Trump and N. Korean leader Kim Jong Un was most assuredly historic. It was the first time that a N. Korean leader had met face-to-face with a sitting U.S. President. But, was the meeting substantive and did it produce any lasting results? That is the question politicians, journalists, and analysts are asking as President Trump wings his way back to Washington. The first reviews are tepid, according to TIME Washington correspondent Philip Elliott, and the President might not get the fanfare that he wants and expects. The wait-and-see attitude is even pervasive with some members of Trump’s own party like Sen. Lindsey Graham. He said that this is a start but a long way from any “agreement” with North Korea to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, according to the veteran Senator. Elliott in a conversation with the Spectrum podcast also discusses the optics of the summit and its political viability in the mid-term elections in November. He contrasted the praise given to Kim Jong Un by Trump and other administrative officials on the heels of disparaging remarks by Pres. Trump and others toward U.S. allies like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada. Trump was openly hostile toward the G-7 allies and their leaders, says Elliott, while saying it was an “honor” to meet with Kim, calling him a “great leader.” The contrasts in Presidential styles between historic allies and an adversary were noted all across Washington, Elliott adds. In his conversation, Elliott also talks about the onslaught of attacks on Special Counsel Robert Mueller by a quartet of GOP Congressmen, outside-counsel Rudy Giuliani, FOX News hosts and the President himself. Elliott notes that the “War against Mueller” is damaging the investigation’s standing with the general public. This may have long-term impacts on any potential Congressional actions against Trump. Finally, Elliott gives Spectrum listeners insight on who’s “IN” and who’s “OUT” at the White House – the revolving door of political advisors and staffers. Before joining TIME, Elliott spent a decade covering politics, campaign finance, education and the White House for the Associated Press.

0427 What I Learned: Inter-Korean Summit
Lots of punditry already from international/western media. Focus on the domestic reaction. Recap of highlights: - 김정은 inviting 문재인 to briefly step across the border - General cordial atmosphere. 김정은 using honorific to the much older 문재인 - Wives also had good chemistry despite age difference. - most interesting aspect of the summit was the "midday walk" and one-on-one convo Domestic reaction: - as expected, overwhelmingly positive. conservative/progressive press focused on different aspects of the summit - lots of emotional/tearful reactions from the public. surreal to see the two leaders together hugging it out and generally getting along. 김정은 being humanized too much? - optimism abounds for a real settlement to the nuclear issue, peace treaty and eventual confederation/reunification despite different interpretations to the joint statement 판문점 선언 Political reaction: - Ruling 민주 party obviously very effusive. 3 minor opposition parties also to varying degrees positive about the summit results. - Main opposition LKP/자한당 find themselves boxed into political bind. Need to keep their ultra-right 태극기 base. But that will never exceed 20%. 나경원 "어처구니가 없다" controversy, 홍준표 "위장평화쇼" comments met with huge backlash. But also upset they weren't invited to dinner gala with 김정은. 바른미래 minor conservative party sees an opportunity to usurp the LKP. But can't blame the LKP as they have no cards to play. What happens next: - upcoming 김정은/Trump summit will determine if all of the progress made in the 남북 summit will come to fruition. - because of the timing of that summit, the "peace" frame with North Korea will continue being a huge issue, which bodes well for government/ruling party in upcoming local elections Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/korea-pod/id1361450798?mt=2&ls=1 http://koreapod.libsyn.com
0426 Planet Korea : 2018 Inter-Korean Summit
South and North Korea meet for the 3rd time! What to expect: Meticulous to-the-second planning for all the logistics of the summit. - from the cameras, staging, seating, menu a careful eye placed on optics and symbolism. one funny side note: Japan is pissed about a Dokdo-shaped dessert. Some expert trolling by the Blue House. High expectations set for the results of this summit. Too high? - some sort of statement on denuclearization and a declaration of peace expected. - reactions from Washington and Trump will definitely be kept in mind when drafting the statement Domestic reaction will be interesting - opposition/LKP already voicing skepticism, expected to be mealy-mouthed about the positive results. Chairman Hong already says this is a ruse to prop up a collapsing NK regime - overwhelming public support and optimism for the summit. Moon and 청와대 will pull out all the stops to make sure they don't disappoint. - afterwards, the ball will be in Trump's court. More on the summit after it finishes!
