In this episode of the Digible Dudes Podcast, David and Reid introduce a bold new framework for professional and marketing growth: the Misogi Method. Borrowed from Japanese tradition and reimagined for marketers, a Misogi is defined as a challenge so big and uncomfortable that you have only a 50% chance of success—and that's exactly the point. The conversation explores how stepping outside your comfort zone with one massive swing each year can ignite innovation, disrupt stagnation, and build lasting impact in both your personal career and your company's marketing strategy.David and Reid share real-life examples of their own "Misogis"—from failed augmented reality newspaper ads to wildly ambitious music competitions to a six-figure marketing giveaway—and analyze famous brand stunts like Red Bull's space jump, IHOB's burger rebrand, and Liquid Death's unconventional launch. Each story offers inspiration and insight into how to think bigger, take calculated risks, and make your marketing memorable.Whether you're a marketing director at a property management company, an agency leader, or just someone tired of “playing it safe,” this episode encourages you to define your own Misogi, communicate it with your team or stakeholders, and give yourself permission to take a bold swing in 2025—even if you might miss.Because sometimes, the things that scare us most are the ones worth doing.Digible: https://digible.com/Fiona: https://www.myfiona.com/Leave a Spotify Review: https://spoti.fi/3LfoEdULeave an Apple Review: https://apple.co/3AA2zRj(00:00) The $100 Bubble Test: Starting Small with Big Ideas (00:33) What Is a Misogi? This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a product of Nation's Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Sam Oches, and Leigh Anne Zinsmeister spoke about Red Lobster's bankruptcy. It may be the biggest news of the week, but it's also the least surprising: Red Lobster has declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In court documents, Red Lobster CEO Jonathan Tibus said that Red Lobster's seafood supplier, Thai Union, which is also its largest shareholder, may have had corporate mismanagement and possible shady dealings. A filled with rumor and speculation has, as we found out through court documents, become quite complicated and dramatic.Read more about Red Lobster's demise from Bret Thorn:· It wasn't just ‘Ultimate Endless Shrimp' that drove Red Lobster to bankruptcyAlso, the NRN editors once again spoke about marketing. Reminiscent of IHOP's IHOb move a few years ago, BurgerFi changed its name to ChickenFi this week to promote its new chicken sandwiches. While it may seem silly, the name change worked for IHOP and led them to sell four times as many burgers. Will it work for BurgerFi and chicken sandwiches? For some of our editors' thoughts on the National Restaurant Association Show, check out these episodes of First Bite:· Joanna Fantozzi on the tech scene· Alicia Kelso on the labor pictureThis week's guest is Sherif Mityas, CEO of Brix Holdings.

What do burgers, chicken, and pancakes have to do with your product-based business? Other than making you hungry, maybe nothing. But there are some important lessons to be learned from the food industry that do apply to your business — and they're all about focus. We're going to talk about why you should become known for something and how you can do that. Even some of your favorite big businesses, they all started off by being known for one major product. Sometimes you think trying more is going to give you a greater chance of finding that one best selling product, but that's not always the case. We'll help you find your bestseller so that you can lean into it and easily scale your business because…simplicity scales! You'll hear the story of Chick-Fil-A, who keeps their product lineup simple despite people asking for more, and has become the biggest fast food chain in the United States, grossing more revenue than McDonald's, Subway, and Starbucks combined. On the other side is the story of IHOP — or should we say IHOB — making the “what, why” decision to enter the burger market when they've always been known for pancakes. Besides making you hungry, these stories are going to help you realize the power of finding something that works and becoming known for it.If you need help finding your best seller or figuring out how to leverage your best seller, then be sure to join us for our FREE workshop series, The Product Boss' Guide to Your Best Year Yet where we will dive into this and so much more. What does ecology and scientific principle have to do with marketing. Everything, according to our guest today. An ecologist who became a marketer, Ethan Decker is now a brand scientist. He takes a very long – and sometimes peculiar – view on humans, brands, and advertising. As a scientist in the world of marketing, he cuts through the hype and the trends to find out what really works, what the latest research says, and what it means for brands and organizations. Ethan has worked at some of the best agencies in the US for some of the largest brands in the world, including Domino's, Hotels.com, Procter & Gamble, Kellogg's, and Intel. In this episode we challenge some of the established core marketing “laws,” such as the importance of being first to market, and we learn to look more closely, and scientifically, at the data that is really important in order to make wise marketing decisions. We also tackle the bold moves of IHop and their stunt to change their name (for one month) to IHob, and why Dominos got into the pothole filling business. The Pediatrician Who Promotes Public Health Awareness Through Writing for TV Shows (0:34)Guest: Neal Baer, Pediatrician and Writer for TV Shows, ER, Law & Order: SUV, and Designated Survivor. Both Law & Order : SVU and ER were shows written and produced for a long time by Neal Baer who also ran Designated Survivor on Netflix. (50:43)Guest: Keith Recker, Editor and Founder of HAND/EYE Magazine, Author of “True Colors: World Masters of Natural Dyes and Pigment”If a piece of clothing is made with natural colors and fibers, it's probably brown right? Or maybe rust-colored? Natural colors just aren't anywhere near as vibrant as the yellow and pinks and reds and blue dyes made by scientists in laboratories. That's certainly what Keith Recker thought as an executive at Saks Fifth Avenue. When a natural dye expert told him she could make any color he could want for the store's luxurious racks from completely natural sources, Recker says he nodded politely and changed the subject. Then the natural dyer proved him wrong. So if it's apple juice, then it's flavored by actual apples. But that's not how flavoring works in the processed food industry. In fact, the difference between “natural” and “artificial” is not nearly as big as you'd think. (Originally aired 9/4/2019) Ads Can Make Us Mad—Which Is Sometimes the Point (1:22:30)Guest: Mark Bartholomew, Professor of Law, University of BuffaloIHOP or the International House of Pancakes caused a big stir about two years ago when it changed its name to IHOB - the International House of Burgers. Pancake fans went a little nuts at the betrayal. But it was just a marketing stunt. IHOP wanted to make people mad. This is a growing trend in advertising. (Originally Aired 8/6/2019)
Technically we talk about the draft. The draftees' introductions to the NHL, Chuck Fletcher's penchant for drafting guys with first and last names that start with the same letter. We also go into a little bit of detail about the Flyers re-signing Elliott and Sanheim, offer sheet rumors and playing with a soundboard. We help the NHL out with some more rules and stumble into a way to make the draft more exciting. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thepigeoncoop/support

Earlier this week, one of the funniest exchanges on social media came about after the company known as IHOP changed out their P, which stood for Pancakes, to a B. Initially, no one knew what the B stood for. International House of Breakfast? International House of Bacon? International House of Brunch, complete with mimosas? Nope. The B stood for Burgers, something IHOP has offered on its menu in the past, but when they finally revealed what the mystery was, they also decided to change their marketing to reflect that. And people were bittersweet about the change, including some of the other fast-food social media accounts, with Wendy's even throwing shade on their Twitter account, saying, “Can't wait to try a burger from the place that decided pancakes were too hard.” So, that gave me the idea for this week's episode. And, by the way, the change from IHOP to IHOB is only a temporary marketing campaign. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Hamburgers. Find out more about The Story Behind Book!
