Hi Everyone! My guest today is Xin Lin, children's book author and illustrator. Here is more about her. Xin (Sheen) Li is an illustrator and writer. After spending half of her life living in countries outside of her homeland, Xin chose to paint and write, as stories help her to make sense of a world that otherwise is often lost in translation. I Lived Inside a Whale is her debut picture book as author and illustrator. Additionally, Xin also illustrated You and the Universe, a picture book written by Professor Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking. Xin's website Xin IG Thank you for listening!
Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking forayed into writing a science-fiction book series for young kids. This book (George's secret key to the universe) is the first of the series. The plot involves two young children traveling in space involving a mixed bag of adventures. The authors have also incorporated many images from NASA's repository to bring real science into the hands of the young. In this episode, four primary schoolers joined us to share their opinions of the book as well as creative ideas of how they would explore space if they had a chance. If you are looking for a new book to pick up for your 7-11 year old, this might be it. Listen to the full episode to find out more. Inspire kids to ask the big questions about Earth and the cosmos with this stunningly illustrated version of Professor Stephen Hawking's final message to humankind. We are all time travelers journeying together into the future. But let us work together to make that future a place we want to visit. Scientist and educator Stephen Hawking spent his life trying to unravel the mysteries of the universe. But, he still had many questions—and he wanted every reader, every child, to come together to help answer them: How can we save the planet? How can we learn to be there for one another? Adapted from Professor Hawking's posthumous 2020 Earth Day message, You and the Universe is his first picture book and is a tribute to the littlest citizens of Earth, highlighting the power of coming together and creating a better tomorrow. This episode features French physicist and science communicator Christophe Galfard. His background is in theoretical physics and Christophe worked with Professor Stephen Hawking as his PhD student at Cambridge University. I worked with Christophe in 2016, where he co-presented Search for a New Earth with Danielle George. He was also the solo presenter of a French-language version of the programme. While working on his PhD with Hawking, Christophe focused on black holes as an area which challenges the theories around the very big and the very small, touching as they do on both gravity and quantum physics. Since finishing his PhD Christophe has been focused on the importance of communicating science to a broader audience. With Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking, he co-authored a children's book and went on to publish a science fiction trilogy for 9-13 year olds. He has gone on to write books for adults including the international bestseller The Universe in Your Hand and he is a very busy public speaker with various TED talks under his belt aswell as numerous speaking events around the globe. I hugely enjoyed getting to know Christophe on the road while filming, I really enjoyed this opportunity to dig into some of the questions I didn't get to ask when filming together. I learnt a lot about black holes, gravitational theory, quantum physics and the current understanding of our amazing universe. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Support this podcast

On this episode, Beth and Astrobiologist Dr. David Warmflash discuss his new book, Moon: An Illustrated History; From Ancient Myths to the Colonies of Tomorrow. Here are some highlights from both the book and the Casual (Space) conversation: This new and different book about the moon includes images on every left side of the page, and illuminating text on every right side! Moon: An Illustrated History chronologically presents 100 milestones in the Moon’s development and exploration. Starting 4.5 billion years ago when the Moon formed, David walks through hypotheses of the Moon’s formation to sixth-century BCE predictions of solar eclipses, from the twentieth-century Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union to private space companies and possible future lunar colonies. Did you know there were lunar calendars as well as solar calendars? David shares how lunar brightness was used to estimate stellar distances; how advancing telescopes in the seventeenth century allowed us to eye the Moon more closely; how author Jules Verne inspired the Father of Astronautics; the originals of the Saturn V Moon Rocket and we bring it all back to the Apollo missions. The Moon formed billions of years ago, and humans have been enthralled with the Moon throughout history. The moon has a lot of resources that we can mine- silicon dioxide and we can genetically engineer opportunities to mine for water (ice) for all kinds of things- fuel, oxygen, etc. Now is the time for the Moon! There’s the 50th anniversary of the first human landing on the moon, so we are all reminiscing. In his book, David highlights how the moon effected humanity before any technology was applied to the moon. The Moon meant a lot of different things to many ancient people. We take our best guess when we find ancient structures that help line up the lunar year and solar year. People worshiped the moon as a goddess. Agricultural societies would use a lunar calendar to help successfully plant and harvest during the year. “Going to the moon will help everyone on Earth. The new mission to go back to the moon is named Artemins (the sister to Apollo). We can get energy from the moon and make things [on Earth] more sustainable.” Dr. David Warmflash About David Warmflash: Dr. David Warmflash is an astrobiologist and prolific science writer.

Lucy Hawking and renowned physicist Paul Davies discuss the life and ideas of one of the world’s greatest minds: Stephen Hawking, who joins us live from Cambridge via the latest technology, in his first ever Australian talk. There are few scientists that can be said to have touched the public imagination. Physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking is one such scientist. Professor Hawking will be appearing via the very latest in streaming technology while his daughter, journalist and author Lucy, will be on the Opera House stage with renowned physicist and writer Paul Davies, providing an intimate view into the life of a great man and that of his extraordinary family. Confined to a wheelchair since his twenties, Hawking has never let his physical restrictions limit his imagination or intellect. As a physicist, he has deepened our knowledge of black holes, general relativity and the Big Bang. As author of the international best-seller A Brief History of Time he has introduced millions of non-scientists to some of the most mind-twisting concepts in modern physics. He’s a star of the small screen thanks to several documentary series (most recently Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking), with appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory.
