We had the pleasure of interviewing Sadie Jean over Zoom video!Singer-songwriter, Sadie Jean recently released her new single, “Just Because” Co-written with Griff Clawson and Shy Martin, “Just Because” is a follow up to her two smash hits "WYD Now?" (which just received a RIAA Gold certification and now sampled by rapper Rod Wave) and "Locksmith" (which received over 60M worldwide streams to date and has been across virtually every top-level Apple Music pop playlist). As Sadie continues to navigate life and love as a young woman, the new single serves as a fitting addition to the complexities of a past romantic experience explored in her earlier releases. Prior to the song's release, the track has already received over 4.5M aggregate views and 1.5k recreates on TikTok.ABOUT SADIE JEANSadie Jean is an emerging singer-songwriter based in New York City and Los Angeles with a knack for creating music that blends honest and intimate lyrics with infectious pop melodies, guaranteeing a captivating and emotional listening experience. Deriving influence from Joni Mitchell, Taylor Swift, and Phoebe Bridgers, Sadie gravitates towards confessional songwriting building on her own experiences. It is her relatable yet detailed lyrics that captivate and draw in wide audiences. Born with an intrinsic sense of melody making and songwriting, Sadie had long cultivated her musical style before her debut single, “WYD Now?” went viral on TikTok and garnered 200M+ streams on all platforms to date. The incredible Gemma Sugrue joins Alexa this week to take a deep dive into the world of mix voice and belt techniques. We're thrilled to explore this topic with Gemma, especially after our enlightening conversation with John Henney in episode 101. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gemma believes the belt is characterised by a thick vocal closure, a ratio of high pressure to air pressure, and a significant presence of upper partial activities in the harmonic spectrum frequencies. She sees belt as a way of singing that deviates from the norm and is recognisable by its specific vocal qualities. Mixing involves singing higher notes with power, control and balanced resonances. It requires effective vowel modification, smooth vocal transitions and proper management of air pressure and airflow. It is a coordinated and controlled technique that allows singers to achieve strength and skill in their higher ranges. When training singers, Gemma prioritises developing their listening skills. She believes it is crucial for singers to excel in perceiving sound before focusing on physical sensations. By enhancing their auditory intelligence and spectral hearing abilities, singers can naturally align their body parts to produce the desired sound. Gemma focuses on helping singers develop a strong and controlled mode one up to G4. This applies to both male voices with a more testosterone-driven quality and female voices with a more oestrogen-driven quality. It's essential for singers to be able to sing all the vowels and navigate through that octave effectively, maintaining a speech-like dominant sound. Gemma also emphasises the importance of accessing a full falsetto range as part of a singer's skillset. BEST MOMENTS‘I call it entering into the option area' ‘A mix is anything that's connected and still in mode one'‘I like to start with refining the engine first before adding the gas'‘As you sing, there's a different pressure quality to each note' ‘We want a larynx that's on the move' EPISODE RESOURCES Website: Pro Vocal Artist: https://www.provocalartist.com/ Social Media: Handle: @gemmasugrue Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/gemmasugrue Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists referenced: Sia; Jessie J; Whitney Houston; Beyonce Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 46 How to Develop Lasting and Positive Habits with Gemma Sugrue Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 101 How to Belt with John Henny John Henny: https://johnhenny.com/ The work of Johan Sundberg Voice Science Works (David Harris & Laurel Irene): https://www.voicescienceworks.org/ Kerrie Obert: https://obertvoicestudios.com/ Heidi Moss: https://www.heidimosserickson.com/ Ken Bozeman: http://www.kenbozeman.com/ Chris Johnson: https://www.chrisjohnsonvocalcoach.com/ Teach Voice: https://www.teachvoice.com/ Feldenkrais: https://feldenkrais.com/ Alexander Technique: https://alexandertechnique.com/ Andrew Byrne: https://www.andrewmbyrne.com/ Lisa Popeil: https://www.popeil.com/ 5 Things You Must Know About Belting with Lisa Popeil: YouTube.com/watch?v=eLHyVVwo2ek Ian Davidson: https://ianjdavidson.com/ Dave Stroud: https://davestroud.com/ ABOUT THE GUEST Gemma is an artist coach and the founder/director of Pro Vocal Artist, an online mentorship program for original music artists. Our resident host Grace Sanders caught up with Sam Fischer ahead of his upcoming tour "The Something to Hold onto Tour. Alongside a chat about his upcoming collaboration with Meghan Trainor [June 2nd] and his album release this September. With over a billion streams to his name, the man behind global hits ‘This City' and ‘What Other People Say' ft Demi Lovato is taking it back to his roots with a run of small and intimate shows on The Something To Hold Onto Tour. The tour – named after a poignant lyric from his latest release ‘High On You' ft Amy Shark – will see Sam showcase new music from his highly anticipated upcoming album acoustically around Europe. Australian born Sam Fischer first introduced himself with his Not A Hobby EP and has achieved well deserved attention since for his heartfelt songs. Now based between LA and London, he not only has received acclaim for his own work, but he continues to solidify his spot as one of the hottest current writers, having worked with global pop superstars including Cian Ducrot, Ciara, Cat Burns, Lennon Stella, Louis Tomlinson, Elle King, Jessie J, Virginia To Vegas and many more. However, it hasn't all been plain sailing for Sam, who endured his own heartache to achieve his dreams. With the promise of a recording contract in the bag, he set off to LA only for the deal to be pulled away. After months of couch-surfing, he finally and deservedly received his break with This City and project Homework, which has been just the start of an exciting new chapter in Sam's career with lots more still to come. Sam's debut single This City currently stands at over 500 million worldwide streams and 4 million worldwide sales and stayed in the UK Top 20 for 11 weeks. The track is also double platinum in Australia, platinum in the UK and Gold in the US, New Zealand and Switzerland. Sam also performed the track on US TV, including Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel and The Late Late Show with James Corden. His duet with Demi Lovato What Other People Say has sold over 1 million copies and saw him perform the track on Ellen alongside Demi Lovato. www.samfischermusic.com

Tributes are being paid to a mother and daughter who've died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Whitstable. Leah Churchill and 17 year-old Brooke Wanstall helped run a burger van business, and were found dead in the vehicle off the Old Thanet Way yesterday morning. Our reporter tells us the details after speaking exclusively to a family member. Residents of a flood prone town near Maidstone have told the KentOnline Podcast they're choosing to stay and face future risk instead of moving to higher ground. Yalding is located between three rivers and is one of the county's most at-risk areas for flooding. We hear from Village Postmaster Tim Chapman who's home has been affected eight times since 2006. Cian Ducrot's been chatting to our sister station kmfm about his new song 'I'll be waiting' - and his upcoming tour. You might have seen his videos on TikTok where he surprises cafe staff with a flash mob choir. He's been telling Numi about all of that on the Hit List. And in sport, Gillingham are finally out of the League Two relegation zone after beating Grimsby Town last night. A dramatic late goal from Oli Hawkins gave the Gills a 2-1 victory at Priestfield. Manager Neil Harris gave us his reaction.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Kings Elliot over Zoom video. One of 2022's most promising new voices Kings Elliot releases her sophomore EP Bored Of The Circus via Verve Forecast/Interscope. The EP is also available to purchase on limited edition 10'' vinyl. Along with the EP, Kings Elliot releases the official music video for “Ashes By The Morning.” WATCH “ASHES BY THE MORNING”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4oZ5HKaWos LISTEN TO BORED OF THE CIRCUShttps://kingselliot.lnk.to/BoredoftheCircus On Bored Of The Circus, the half-Swiss, half-British singer-songwriter further establishes herself as one of altpop's leading up-and-comers. Elliot digs into her deepest emotions while crafting finely wrought pop songs that feel both incredibly intimate and otherworldly. The contrast between her to-the-bone lead vocal, which precisely describes her internal torment, and the voices surrounding her, a hovering choir accompaniment made up of multiple tracks of Kings' own voice and arranged by chief collaborator halfrhymes, results in an out-of- time musical experience that heightens all the knotty emotions outlined in her lyrics as she explores themes of mental health, innocence, heartbreak, growth, and hope. Elliot recently concluded supporting U.S. pop-rock megaforce Imagine Dragons on their North American stadium tour, which kicked off in early August. She also took the School Night stage on September 12th at Bardot in Los Angeles alongside Josh Fudge, Reve, and Cian Ducrot. Elliot remains a leading advocate for mental health - an open book with her fans, she explores and speaks openly about her battle through her music and her social pages have become a safe haven and space of community for fans. Her bruising honesty and dedication to the craft of songwriting have already made her beloved by fans around the world, and she's already been called “a future star” by BBC6 music maven Chris Hawkins. Kings Elliot has already received critical praise from Consequence, Teen Vogue, Billboard, Clash, Wonderland, The Line of Best Fit, COLORS and Lyrical Lemonade, among others, as well as social support from Reese Witherspoon, Dixie D'Amelio, Lewis Capaldi and Milky Chance. Her music has been added to a host of notable Spotify and Apple Music playlists as well. We want to hear from you!
