SSC's mission is: “We help Earth benefit from Space.” For SSC — Swedish Space Corporation — fulfilling that mission involves its extensive ground network that supports launches with real-time TT&C data and communicating with payloads. This episode of On Orbit features a conversation with Erwin Mercado, president and CEO of the company's U.S. subsidiary, SSC Space US Inc, about the value of space communications.  Erwin talks about the company's rich history in space. Formerly known as Universal Space Network, the company was founded by Pete Conrad, commander of the Apollo 12 mission and third person to walk on the Moon. Erwin shares how the company has built up a portfolio of ground stations around the world to form the link between Earth and space, and how these communications are critical to support space missions. A Rare Reprieve for Texas Death Row Inmate Rodney Reed (0:33)Guest: Griffin Hardy, Communications Manager for Sister Helen Prejean's Ministry Against the Death PenaltyRodney Reed had been scheduled for execution in Texas this week for the rape and murder of a Texas woman in 1996. But a nationwide campaign to save Reed's life, that included Republican politicians and celebrities Kim Kardashian West and Rihanna, succeeded. On Friday night, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals suspended Reed's death sentence indefinitely and ordered the court that originally tried Reed to consider new evidence in the case. This kind of last-minute reprieve is very unusual in Texas, which leads the nation in executions. Ancient Origins of Modern Board Games (16:22)Guest: Cameron Browne, Associate Professor of Computer Science, Maastricht UniversitySome of my favorite childhood memories are of playing a new board games as a family. In fact, the rules for some of your favorite games may date back centuries. 50th Anniversary of Apollo 12 (32:11)Guest: Mike Joner, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Brigham Young UniversityYou couldn't miss the 50thanniversary celebrations of Apollo 11 over the summer. Everybody knows Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first to walk on the moon. You ever heard of Pete Conrad and Alan Bean? They landed on the moon just four months later. Not according to the US Supreme Court, which, a decade ago, abolished the death penalty for offenders under 18. So, what should happen to that teenager? Is life in prison without the chance of a parole a reasonable sentence? Over the last several years the US Supreme Court has been steadily restricting that sentence for juvenile offenders, too. The latest case to come before the justices involves a particularly high-profile inmate –Lee Boyd Malvo, better known as one of the DC snipers who killed 10 people in a shooting spree back in 2002. Malvo was 17 at the time.   The FIDO Project Gives Dogs A Voice (1:10:08)Guest: Melody Jackson, Director, Center for BioInterface Research and Professor at Georgia Tech's College of ComputingIf you've never dreamed of talking to your dog, you're probably lying to yourself. Now, new technology is making that dream a reality. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are creating new tech that allows dogs to contact humans in case of emergencies their owners face (such as with a chronic illness, an injury, or even an allergic reaction) and speak in ways we can actually understand. For example, a new dog vest is one of several emerging technologies that is programmed with a few phrases that the dog initiates with a tap of their nose. "My owner needs your attention!” and “Please follow me!” are the working messages currently. However the project is still underway and they are excited to continue improving fido's speech. A New Antiviral for Herpes Virus (1:22:49)Guest: Alonzo Cook, PhD, Professor of Chemical Engineering, BYU; Rex Cates, PhD, Retired Professor of Biology, BYU; Mike Alder, BYU Technology Transfer OfficeTwo-thirds of all the people on the planet are infected by the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 –that's the one that causes periodic outbreaks of cold sores. Friend of the show Rod Pyle returns to discuss his latest book, and all things Apollo with Beth AND… Receiving the foreword from Buzz Aldrin himself! Rod’s impressions and insights from speaking with the Apollo 11 astronauts’ children (now grown adults) Combing through the NASA archives to find incredible, never before shared documents, photos and stories from the Apollo era And what the future of space can be, returning to the Moon, on to Mars, and beyond…   Quotes from Rod here: “You get the sense of an eternal restlessness with Buzz (Aldrin)… he demands that we move further and faster and beyond in space exploration, and he has not stopped thinking about that since the day he returned.” “One thing that always impressed me from my years of training at the Johnson Space Center, I would walk along the Saturn V rocket, and share the experience with several executives who would start crying because it’s such a powerful experience as you walk from one end to the other, where you see what a massive accomplishment it all was…and I take them to the top of the rocket and explain that ‘all this is just to get the astronauts to the moon,’ and they are astonished.” “What I always try to do in my books is to both give the quotes of numbers, details about the missions, how many pounds of thrust the Saturn V rocket uses, etc., but that’s not speaking to our hearts, and that’s the conversation we need to have with people. The last time I saw this done well was when Elon Musk launched his Tesla from a Falcon Heavy into space, looking back on the Earth.” “On Apollo 12, Pete Conrad and Allan Bean were very serious and they were setting down the LEM, and there was this easy banter between two brothers sharing a common goal and landing right on target.  He (Conrad) came down right on the money, and when they landed, it was like party time inside the LEM, they were slapping each other’s backs and it like listening to the “Throughout the [Apollo12] moonwalks, and there were two (Pete Conrad and Allan Bean), they were so overjoyed not just to be there and to be there on the moon, but to be in each other’s company; there was this warmth, and this joy, this kind of excitement and this almost child-like thrill.”   About Rod Pyle: Rod Pyle is a space author, journalist and historian who has authored 15 books on space history, exploration and development for major publishers that have been released in ten languages. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the National Space Society’s quarterly print magazine Ad Astra, and his frequent articles have appeared in Space.com, LiveScience, Futurity, Huffington Post, Popular Science, Caltech’s E&S magazine, and WIRED. He has written extensively for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, including Technology Highlights for NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Luglio 1969 d.C. Siamo venuti in pace per tutta l'umanità». Riassunto di una storia d’eroismo. Eppure qualcuno – e non sono pochi, nel calderone di internet – resta convinto sia stata una montatura o, peggio, un set cinematografico. Esploriamo la serie delle «balle spaziali», smontandole una per una.

From the Earth to the Moon: A Retrospective Podcast on The Apollo Program

The story of the Apollo 12 second lunar landing mission is told by Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean. Bean, the last member of NASA Astronaut Group 3 to fly in space, narrates his experience with the tightly-knit, all-Navy crew commanded by Gemini veteran Pete Conrad, and accepts with humor and grace his responsibility for the failure of the first color TV camera on the lunar surface, and for almost fracturing his own skull by failing to properly secure the Command Module's TV camera before splashdown. The rotation rate checked out at 55 degrees per minute, and the crew could now test for a minute amount of artificial gravity. When they put a camera against the instrument panel and then let it go, it moved in a straight line to the rear of the cockpit and parallel to the direction of the tether. The crew, themselves, did not sense any physiological effect of gravity.

Her mission is to promote collaborative, student-centered, real-world learning that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship and unleashes students' potential to create future-defining solutions and a sustainable society for generations to come. Ankesh Madan is an accomplished Conrad Challenge alumnus, whose entrepreneurial focus was sparked by his participation in the Challenge. He competed in the challenge in 2010 while attending a high school that specializes in math and science in North Carolina. He and his team were finalists in the Renewable Energy category, and he is currently a member of the Conrad Alumni Leadership Council. As an undergraduate at North Carolina State University, he and some fellow students co-founded Undercover Colors, a company that is addressing drug-facilitated sexual assault by developing products that detect date rape drugs. This invention sparked a flurry of media interest that spanned the globe. In 2008, Nancy Conrad established the Conrad Challenge, a multi-phase innovation and entrepreneurship program, which includes mentorship and support from worldwide experts. This annual global competition challenges students to combine education, innovation and entrepreneurship to create commercially viable, technology-based solutions to local and global real-world challenges. By enabling young minds to connect education, innovation and entrepreneurship, the Foundation helps provide a bold platform for enriching the innovative workforce of the future. Teams of students from around the world can enter the Conrad Challenge in one of several categories including the following: Aerospace & Aviation Cybertechnology & Security Energy & Environment Health & Nutrition Smoke-Free World Transforming Education through Technology Through the challenge, students learn to apply the Conrad Design Method (CDM), a structured five phase collaboration framework for teachers and student teams to understand and accomplish innovative and entrepreneurial solutions. Some significant goals had been set for the last two Gemini flights. For example, the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office wanted a rendezvous in the first spacecraft orbit, which would simulate lunar orbit rendezvous. There was also interest in linking an Agena to a the Gemini spacecraft by a tether and then spinning the combination to produce some artificial gravity.

By this time the Astronauts were thinking about a nickname for their spacecraft, but NASA Headquarters now officially refused to allow nicknames for Gemini spacecraft. However, Gordo Cooper was not so easily put off. Pete Conrad’s father-in-law had whittled a model covered wagon, which inspired Cooper with the idea for a crew patch, that would depict a covered wagon, emblazoned with the legend “Eight Days or Bust.” A personal appeal to NASA Administrator Webb led, after much discussion, to approval of the “Cooper patch.” But Webb greatly disliked the motto because he believed if the mission did not go the full eight days, people would say it had “busted.”

Episode 7: Remembering Apollo Astronaut Dick Gordon Dick Gordon passed away in November 2017, and author and volunteer Jake Schultz had the honor of recording Gordon’s oral history few months prior to learn about his experiences as an astronaut. In this episode, Gordon talks spaceflight, corvettes, and football. He recalls the differences between the Gemini and Apollo missions. Gemini’s Titan II rocket was an ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) designed to get you into orbit as fast as possible at altitude and then shut down. The Saturn V rocket on the Apollo mission, however, was a different kind of ride. “It shook, rattled and rolled,” Gordon describes. Gordon, a Seattle native, also fondly recalls bonding with his crew—Pete Conrad and Alan Bean—over their three red Corvettes and taking on the role of the Executive Vice President of the New Orleans Saints after his space career. We chat with exhibit developer Peder Nelson to learn more about this mysterious aerospace artifact. The mix tape belongs to the widow of Pete Conrad, who brought it with him on Skylab 1. Buzz Aldrin's Vision for Space Exploration (starts at 6:14) Dr. Buzz Aldrin advocates that the United States should not enter a space-race to the moon against the Chinese, or a race to Mars against the Russians, but rather show leadership by cooperating with the major space-faring nations to systematically step across the great void to the Red Planet. This is his personal Unified Space Vision. He is also working toward an independent council, a United Strategic Space Enterprise, that would advise American citizens about the nation's space policy. USSE experts would draw on a deep knowledge of America's previous successes and failures to present a unified plan of exploration, science, development, commerce, and security within a national foreign policy context. Buzz shared these visions with How On Earth's Jim Pullen. Here's an excerpt from his hour-long discussion with Jim. Stay tuned for the rest of his discussion, in which he shares little-known insights into why Apollo 11, not Apollo 12, was first to land humans on the moon, and never-before-shared honors for Neil Armstrong and Pete Conrad. The Bees Needs (starts at 16:04) Colorado is home to over nine-hundred species of wild bees. Most of these solitary creatures nest in the ground, but others nest in the hollow stalks of plants, and about one hundred and fifty species nest in holes in wood. How are these bees doing? Are pesticides striking them down, like their honeybee cousins? How will they respond to changes in climate? CU scientists Dr. Alex Rose and Dr. Virginia Scott have embarked on a journey of discovery, and they've invited ordinary people to help. It's the Bees Needs, a citizen-science project. How On Earther Jim Pullen is a part of that citizen-science team, and he invited Virgina and Alex to see what's happening at the bustling bee block nest outside our studio.
