Wellington has seen five suspicious deaths in around two weeks; a daylight shooting in Featherston, a man found dead on a footpath in Miramar, a suspected murder-suicide of a couple in Roseneath, and a person found dead in Northland. But do these sorts of crimes shock us like they used to? Also, all New Zealand exports to the United States will be stung with a 10% tariff, announced by President Donald Trump as part of his "liberation day" announcement. How will this impact NZ, and should we be grateful it's only 10 per cent? To answer those questions, former Wellington mayor Justin Lester and Newstalk ZB political editor Jason Walls joined Nick for the Beehive Buzz. A new group is calling on the government to investigate a new road between Upper Hutt and the Wairarapa - aiming to do away with the current accident-prone Remutaka Hill Road in favour of a safer toll road. The group has investigated four options and estimates a new route could halve the 33-minute journey between Featherston and Upper Hutt. The most expensive option would cost $1.4 billion and would involve building through a valley towards a 320m-high tunnel. The group's leader Simon Casey joined Nick Mills to discuss the idea. The Government has announced the reversal of speed limit reductions on a large number of New Zealand roads, including many in the northern regions of the country. The move will result in speed limits being increased on 38 sections of key routes, including parts of State Highway 1 in Northland, SH16 near Auckland and SH3 in Hamilton. Also on the list are changes to SH2 between Featherston and Masterton, and SH3 Whanganui. Making the announcement in Wairarapa, where the speed limit increase will save drivers around three minutes on their journey, Transport Minister Chris Bishop said: “It all adds up - that is productivity and growth.” Viastrada Certified Safe System Assessor and Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessor Glenn Koorey says the move goes against evidence that lower speeds make for safer roads, but there are some areas where putting the limit up can be justified. Imagine the sweet notes of a timeless hymn weaving through the air, carrying with them sentiments of undying love for Jesus. That's the melody that frames our latest episode, where my daughter Zoey and I take you on a journey through the beautifully poetic lyrics of "My Jesus, I Love Thee." A touching testament composed by a teenager, William Ralph Featherston, this hymn has the power to resonate across generations, speaking to the hearts of many. Our exchange bridges the gap between young and old, revealing the depth of emotion and devotion present in this cherished piece of hymnody. As Zoey lends her youthful wisdom to our conversation, we share personal reflections on the impact of Featherston's words, especially in times of loss and mourning. It's a discussion that transcends mere analysis, becoming a comforting embrace for those seeking assurance of salvation and the hope of heaven. The power of Featherston's creation is not lost on us; we marvel at how a young man from the 1800s could craft words that still echo with relevance and inspire current and future generations to express their love for Jesus in such a profound way.We close our episode with a dose of spirituality, as Zoey takes the lead in a heartfelt prayer that encapsulates our gratitude for the enriching dialogue we've shared. It's a sweet moment of peace and reflection, one that extends blessings for the week ahead and solidifies the connections we've nurtured through our faith and appreciation for this great hymn. I met Austin Featherston at the Creator Summit in Chicago when he came up and asked how he could get on the podcast? We chatted for a few mins and was great to meet a listener at an event like that. Austin started young like most detailers these days doing friends and family cars as he learned and grew his business. Moving from Arkansas to Illinois to be closer to his girlfriend, Austin started taking care of her father's car collection. Washing cars in the driveway wasn't going to cut it when winter came, so Austin found a shop he could work out of. After attending some training events at Chicago Auto Pros he was ready to improve his business. Austin hopes in the future he can help other detailers grow by showing him what worked for him. Most of you know the artist behind pop hits like 'Thinking Out Loud' and 'Perfect', but would you be able to recognise him in person? Well, if you're like Ed Sheeran superfan Debbie Sinclair, then maybe not. The duty manager of Featherston's Brac and Bow bar asked the British popstar for his ID to purchase a pint at the weekend, not believing for a moment it could be Ed Sheeran himself. She's spoke to Corin Dann.
Brac and Bow duty manager Debbie Sinclair was in for a surprise when UK-based superstar Ed Sheeran paid a visit to the pub. The Featherston local and pub duty manager was on duty and told a customer that he resembled the singer before checking his ID and noticing the customer wasn't a doppelganger at all. According to Sinclair, it took seeing the ID a couple of times and her boss pointing it out before she realised this customer who resembled Ed Sheeran turned out to be the singer. Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day and just hit 40,000 words. He's based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. We're back in Sideways territory in a very strong way. In this episode, Rex allows Youie to put on his best fanboy suit and ask questions about the new book - still not completed, of course - without any notice to Rex. The ensuing conversation covers off all sorts of questions and points including whether both Miles and Jack make a comeback; whether there any new characters in the book; whether something happened between Miles and Maya in the end; to what extent much of the new book is based on real events in Napier, Featherston, Wellington, Central Otago, Christchurch and Oamaru; whether there are any big comedic moments in the new novel; the trajectory of relationships in this novel between Miles and the other characters; and what's the overall psychological mood of the new novel. Discussions touch on the Cougars of Christchurch and the Tough Guys of Oamaru. Along the way, Rex makes some exclusive revelations on an attempt by others to make a TV series based on Sideways which Rex is clearly still bitter about. Things get a little edgy between Rex and Youie for the first time in the podcasts when discussing this topic. Rex and Youie then talk about the role of the haka and the powhiri and Rex's desire to set a scene in a high school (known as college in New Zealand). Rex and Youie have always welcomed questions to the show but this is the first and possibly last time Rex is inviting ideas and suggestions as to what you'd love to see in the new novel. This is pretty special, so if you are motivated by this, then make sure you send the message to wine@158.co.nz. Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, the musical, the podcast, or the play)? Then please write to him on wine@158.co.nz. You'll get your question read out and you'll be famous for 15 seconds. If you're in Auckland in October 2022, why not come out and meet Rex? He'll be at Winetopia on Friday October 28 and Saturday October 29 at Shed 10 in Auckland. Check out the details on (https://www.winetopia.co.nz/auckland-2022) . Come along and taste the range of Sideways wines too! We'd love to see you there and Rex would love it if you were there to talk movies, books, and anything else. Why not subscribe to the podcast? This is the second episode in Series 2. Rex has done his research on his campervan trip around NZ (thanks to Maryann at Pacific Horizon Campervan Rentals (https://pacifichorizon.co.nz/). Rex is madly typing away and averaging 2,000 words a day! He's now based at Prophet's Rock near Lake Dunstan. In this second half episode to Part 1 released last week, Rex continues to talk to Youie about an assortment of topics and in this half of the discussion, we talk about independent book stores, a book club on Mt. Pleasant, book signings, some dramatic journeys Rex has had in NZ, smuggling drugs, lots about Featherston and the Booktown concept, Emma Patene, some important news about Jack (!), Rex's views on Ben Hurley - a well known NZ comedian, Christchurch Winetopia, some big news on the new book, Sideways NZ, and finally the word of the podcast 'pulchritude'. From here, we should be able to get out a new podcast slightly more frequently than 1 a week. Have you got a question to ask Rex about wine, all things Sideways (the books, the movie, the musical, the podcast, or the play)? Then please write to him on wine@158.co.nz.
