My guest this week is writer, broadcaster, nature observer, citizen scientist and champion of the outdoors, Kelly Brenner. This episode came about off the back of a listener suggestion and begins with a look at Lycoris radiata aka the Death Flower, and its place in nature and culture. This may seem an odd choice of subject for this festive time, but this is the last episode of 2023 and the nearest to the winter solstice, which heralds the death of the sun, so it somehow seemed fitting. Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Overwintering fruit and veg pests What we talk about What intrigues Kelly about Lycoris radiata, and why she thinks it has garnered such dark symbolism throughout history Nature, wildlife, and folklore – how they are seamlessly woven into Kelly's work The origin story of Kelly's passion for plants, nature and folklore and how they naturally blend into her writing and explorations How urban dwellers can maintain their connection with nature, and are there specific aspects of urban landscapes that come alive during these colder months? At a home in Saint Matthews, dating from 1880, the yard is now naturalized. But in the fall, you can see where the formal beds from probably a century ago were the planted. Almost overnight, usually after a good, drenching rain, twelve to fifteen inch tall brilliant red spider lilies, Lycoris radiata, pop up and continue blooming for almost a month.
I don't think the person who gave the common name Hurricane Lily to what I've always called spider lilies, Lycoris radiata, meant to cast aspersions on them.
Another Lycoris species often found in older gardens has a wonderfully amusing common name – Naked Lady Lily, Lycoris squamigera
This week on Anime Pulse we got sandy scallops, bad ass girls doing yuri things, and the Bay Area in San Francisco gets some new mascots. Up first Joseph did another long ass walk and ate a little too much habachi dinner, and Andrew wants to know what anime do not deserve to see the light of day again. Then in the industry news Shonen Sunday releases their results for top heroine, a bus drive around Fukuoka that might spirit you away, and some new anime mascots grace San Francisco's public transportation. And finally we have return to our regularly schedule reviews as Joseph belly flops into a bad VR game, and Andrew takes out some terrorists while chewing on some lycoris.

This week on Kaizoku Uncharted, in the news the crew thought that Jujitsu Kaisen was meant to release in the fall, but apparently not. Justin starts us off with Parallel World Pharmacy under the guise of it being a weak show, to Jakia's dismay, especially since she loves Parallel World Pharmacy. In Black Summoner, we learn more about Efil's backstory, but there are still some parts shrouded in mystery. And lastly, we actually meet Clive? Justin isn't so sure. Jenae still hasn't gotten back onto Love All Play. Our team makes it to the finals in the singles and doubles and its about to go down! In Lycoris Recoil, the crew is all about Majima and he's putting in work; from exposing the Lycoris agents to the public, to luring Chisato and showing us his use of echolocation. Jenae and Justin think that ist time for Chisato to grow up and the most real Takina comes in a clutch and we're here for it. On Shadow House, we've gotten so much information! All this and more on this week's episode of Kaizoku Uncharted!
Instagram: @weebgamerpodcastLycoris Recoil starts with its typical boring self but spices it up a bit in the second half!Aoi and team score a very unnecessary super cartwheel front flip goal as they forget that headers are allowed in soccer! They then go back to being trash.Summertime Render continues leading the summer anime in terms of quality and Shide just refuses to die. Call of the Night shows us absolutely nothing as we recorded too early to watch it this week.Andre and Allen shortly discuss their opinion on the new CyberPunk anime and it turns out to be better than we all expected!Enjoy the episode :)

Instagram: @weebgamerpodcastLycoris Recoil continues to torture Andre's mental health as we are all just waiting it to end at this point.Aoi and team are absolute filth convincing both Andre and Allen that they could play better than these supposedly elite players.Summertime Render crushes Mio's heart as Shinpei takes a page out of Subaru's book when it comes to rejecting women.Call of the Night shows us that creepy stalking is okay as long as you turn out to be a nice guy afterwards. If I'm honest, I wouldn't have started Lycoris Recoil without Hideo Kojima tweeting about it. But hoo boy, am I glad that I did! If I hadn't taken that first step into the world of the Lycoris, I would have missed out on perhaps some of the best spy world-building of this anime season. Plus, it's essentially John Wick, but cute. Not to mention Chisato's ability to singlehandedly takedown Goku, more than likely. She's kind of my hero right now. But more than anything, this anime presents us with one of my favorite stories - balance. Takina and Chisato are opposites, or are they? Let's talk about it. Welcome to Checkpoint Church - where nerds, geeks, and gamers come together to talk about faith, games, and if it's good enough for Hideo Kojima, it's good enough for me. I'm your Nerd Pastor Nate. Hello Gardeners, I'm Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. This time of year I'm reminded of fixing flowers for the happy second marriage of a friend because I used a native and an imported flower that are flowering right now. Both of them seem to pop up overnight. The native plant was Farewell to Summer which grows in sandy, dry soils. The imported plant was red spider lily and has been a staple of Southern gardens for hundreds of years and persists unless its foliage gets mowed down too often. Spider lily, Lycoris radiata, flowers before the leaves emerge, the photosynthesizing foliage appears after the blossoms are gone. In St. Matthews, there are several old houses where these flowers edge long forgotten paths, winding their way through gardens that now exist in memory but are reminders of those whose hands once cultivated those yards with love.
