On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (06/17/22), Hank discusses the grand social engineering experiment that has been aggressively challenging and reshaping culture. An article in the Washington Post details the story of M Barclay, the first non-binary transgender member of the clergy in the United Methodist Church. Barclay is preaching from the LGBTQI handbook—Biblical theology that was hammered out through the Ecumenical Councils and the Creeds no longer has any room or place in the process. If this is what is happening in the second-largest Protestant denomination in America, you can only imagine what as yet looms on the horizon. When the Church becomes baptized secular humanism, when the Biblical injunctions have no more meaning, then the Church is no longer the Church. In the words of Jesus, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” (Matthew 5:13 NIV).Hank also answers the following questions:Romans 8:39 says nothing can separate us from the love of God, yet Hebrew 6 warns of falling away through apostasy. Can a Christian lose his salvation? How do you explain Judas? He was one of the disciples, yet he betrayed Christ. What are your feelings about honoring Sunday, instead of Saturday, as the Sabbath?
Our guest for Episode six is M Barclay, the director and co-founder of Enfleshed. Enfleshed is one of our favorite resources for liturgy, prayers, and other words, because of the focus on collective liberation. In this episode, Words Shape Worlds, we spend a lot of time discussing deconstruction and the ways we can reconstruct through fostering interconnection.
Rev. M Barclay (they/them) finds the story of Pentecost rich with imagery of mutual interest. Differences are not a barrier but an opportunity to deepen into understanding and authentic relationships while working toward the common goal of collective liberation. This episode takes a big-picture view of what Paul is up to in 1 Corinthians 15. It's officially the "resurrection era." This helps Paul answer activist philosopher Grace Lee Bogg's critical question, "what time is it on the clock of the world?" For Paul, for Corinth, for all of us - on this episode, Rev. M Barclay wonders what it means to live in right-relationship to the era we find ourselves. https://surj.org/our-work/surj-faith/twir/ Transcript available here: surj.org/our-work/surj-faith/twir/

This episode is one of four in a special series from enfleshed called "Our Table: Trans Spirituality Conversations." Contributors to this episode include Rev. Alaina Cobb, Enrique Cintrón, and Rev. M Barclay. Hosted by our first trans faith intern, Nite Hunt, Our Table is a set of conversations among trans and gnc folks about spirituality, joy, ritual, gender, and sex. Nite explains: “Though our stories and presence are often erased, trans spiritual and religious people exist and always have. Many of us have found spiritual wisdom and practices to be essential sources of strength, comfort, nourishment, and solidarity. However, because many religious spaces still don't welcome us or the conversations we want to have, it's difficult to find resources for exploring our spirituality together.”
M is the Director and Co-Founder of enfleshed where they are creating and facilitating spiritual resources for collective liberation. They love and linger in the work and the places where poets, activists, lovers, healers, queers, dreamers, and Spirit all coalesce.
December's episode is a compilation of the best moments of 2020 from Claire's podcast conversations with Lisa Yebuah, Dan Wolpert, Ben Boswell, Amos Disasa, Frank Rogers, M Barclay, Lanecia Rouse, and Amy Stroup. Of course, we hosted many more conversations than these in 2020 with Academy leaders and friends—conversations that challenged us to act, opened us to joy, and reminded us that justice and mercy are the children of Love. The excerpts from the conversations in this “best of” podcast are just a few of our favorites, many of them memorable moments that changed our own thinking, feeling, and being in the world. In the end, we’re simply grateful. Grateful we can hold this space for holy and healing conversation; grateful we can talk about hard things, real things, big things; grateful we can show up, again and again, in the presence of the Holy One asking to be transformed for the healing and transformation of the world.
In this episode, we’re joined by Rev. M. Barclay who is the co-founder and executive director of enfleshed, a nonprofit creating and facilitating resources of spiritual nourishment for collective liberation. M is passionate about bringing fresh and relevant perspectives to the questions, traditions, and theologies that have sustained faith communities for centuries. They have extensive experience in writing, preaching, and teaching on Christianity and its relationship to queer and trans lives, feminism, white anti-racism, and other pressing matters of justice. M is a leader with the UMForward Collective and formerly served as Director of Communications with Reconciling Ministries Network. They have also enjoyed working as a hospital chaplain, youth director, justice associate, and faith coordinator for reproductive justice in Texas. M is proud to be a 2018-2020 Culture of Health Leader with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. They delight in queer community, finding the nearest hike while traveling, reading theologies, and working with stained glass.

From February 23-26, 2019, the United Methodist Church is holding a special general conference specifically for the discussion of "human sexuality." The outcome will impact all members of the UMC, but particularly those within it who are LGBTQ+. In this special episode, nonbinary Methodist Adam Richards was good enough to walk me through the various possible outcomes of this conference. While doing so, they shared their own story -- their love for Methodism and why they stay despite pain and frustation, their plans to pursue a calling to ordination, and the differences they've noticed between LGB issues and trans issues in Methodist churches. Talking points: - Introducing Adam and LGBT+ discussions in the UMC (0:00 - 5:14) - M Barclay and LGBT+ resilience (5:15 - 6:34) - Constant conflict at previous General Conferences (6:35 - 8:42) - This February's special General Conference: 3 main plans (8:43 - 10:56) - Possible consequences for congregations and for LGBT+ individuals (10:57 - 12:51) - Why Adam stays (12:51 - 15:04) - Congregations don't know; lack of knowledge and resources about trans people (15:05 - 19:46) - The discussion is focused on the wrong thing -- property instead of actual people; allies lack resources (19:47 - 22:39) - The consequences land on LGBTQ+ people; "live in my shoes" (22:40 - 23:50) - Groups who want to do LGBTQ+ actual harm; what this is really about: "You hate us" (23:51 - 26:51) - Schism will be a sad thing even if necessary (26:52 - 30:10) - Adam's journey to ordained ministry -- "no matter what, I will be ordained"; Spirit and spite (30:11 - 38:12)

After a years-long battle wherein Methodist church officials publicly interrogated M Barclay's private life, including their gender identity and sexuality, M Barclay is now Reverend M Barclay, the first openly non-binary queer and trans person to be commissioned as a deacon in the United Methodist Church. Today, M is able to provide a visible and enthusiastically queer ministry to people of faith, but that wasn't the case a year ago, when M stood amid the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando, Florida, desperate but unable, within the confines of their own church doctrine, to do what they knew they had been called to do in that moment: Minister to queer people in grief. Not because M wasn't faithful, not because M wasn't educated, not because M didn't know how, but because, the church said, M's sexuality prevented them from inviting others into the presence of God. On this episode of Traitor Radio, M gives listeners a heartfelt, and often heartbreaking, first-person look into their journey to ministry and, on the second half of the show, talks with host Andrea Grimes about how people of faith can make their own church communities places where queer and trans people -- especially queer and trans children -- can flourish. For a full transcript of this episode, visit TraitorRadio.com.
M Barclay serves as RMN’s Director of Communications and served for two years as staff liaison to United Methodist Alliance for Transgender Inclusion. Since, they have served as Justice Associate and Youth Director at University UMC in Austin, Texas and as Faith Network Coordinator at Texas Freedom Network. Recorded on 11/08/16.
