According to Shirley and Danae Dobson, co-authors of Welcome to Our Table, hospitality has become a lost art amid a society where the pace of life seems to be quickening every day. They point to Romans 12:13, which says, "Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Peter H. Reynolds is New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of many books for children, including Happy Dreamer, The Word Collector, Say Something!, Be You!, and Our Table. He is also the illustrator of When Things Aren't Going Right, Go Left by Marc Colagiovanni. His newest picture book is co-authored by his 12- year-old son, Henry Rocket Reynolds. All We Need is Love and a Really Soft Pillow is a tender and timeless tale about what matters most: love.Peter H. Reynolds went for a walk with his son, Henry Rocket, and declared “This is it; this is all we need! Love.” Henry Rocket listened and added, “...and a really soft pillow.” Peter nodded, “Okay. Love, and a really soft pillow.” Henry thought about this, “What about chocolate?” he asked. His father replied, “Right, Love, chocolate, and a really soft pillow.” On they went. And after playing this game, Peter and Henry agreed that when they boiled it down, all they really needed was love... and a pen and paper to write it all down, before they forgot this rather fantastic idea!

We had a great time with Joy Coehlo and Jay Denman aka The Jing Slingers in studio this time. Actually the other time we had them on they were our old studio which we discussed on the show. They were nice enough to gift us some of their DNA detox drops which I'm excited about and will be talking about more soon. As always they brought some of their amazing food and drinks to the show (sorry for eating while doing the show, I couldn't help it!). We recently made one of their recipes from their cookbook Food With Benefits. We talked about the importance of detoxification, cleansing and living a healthy lifestyle. They are moving from the west coast to North Carolina and building a retreat center where they are going to be working with people on a one-on-one basis. They'll be teaching you lifestyle principles for optimum health as well as kitchen strategies how to really take care of yourself at the highest levels. When you come back home, you'll be able to know exactly what to do (and why!), when to do it and really be able to take care of yourself and your family. Thanks for listening! Today's Reading: Table of Duties: Civil GovernmentDaily Lectionary: Isaiah 30:15-26; Revelation 2:1-29Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil (Rom. 13:1-4).In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. One of the great comforts of Jesus becoming Incarnate man is that Jesus knows about life here in this fallen world. You're not the only ones who have lived under the rule of earthly kings and princes; Your Lord Jesus did too. Our Table of Duties from the Small Catechism teaches what our life looks like in this fallen world. We, the baptized, are instructed about Civil Governance not just so we can live, breathe and have our being when they do their job well. We're to be subject to governing authorities even and especially when the people who bear the sword of the Law of God aren't Christian, even when they act in ways that are contrary to the very word of God. God cares so much about order, safety and care for all people that He appoints servants to bear the sword of wrath, the sword of Justice and civil punishment for varying violations of the 10 commands; it's good to have order, it's good that the wicked are punished for crimes and we are given the promise that God ordains this sword for order, for good and not in vain. Out of Chaos, darkness and nothingness God said “Let there be light…” and there was; evening and morning the first day. There God appointed Adam as steward, caretaker of the creation, Adam named animals, called them by the names that have stuck since then. But the reading gets sorta strange when we see that God the Father appoints ministers, that is, avengers to execute wrath on those who practice evil. This passage in the table of duties isn't talking about your pastor, or even a vigilante Christian who seeks to impose morals and virtues across the land. No, the table of duties reminds us that God has appointed authorities, by His good and gracious will, to maintain order here in the land we sojourn through. Ministers, persons given authority by God to punish criminals, law breakers and the like. This ought to be. But what do we owe to those men and women God has appointed for our good; yes, even when they act out of line… gulp! Why do we owe them honor? Simply put, Our Gracious God has placed them over us to execute their charges for our good. Yes, there will be tyrants and despots and we pray the Lord will be merciful to them when they abdicate their calling. We should pray for our President, Congress, Governors and Mayors, Police and School Boards that their ears would be opened to hear the gracious care of our Lord. We pray that they be given strength and integrity to govern us in a way that is good and right in the sight of God; we owe them honor not because THEY are good, but because our Lord and God is good and He has graciously given them to us as a defense, for our safety and good. In the Name of Jesus, amen. Lord, keep this nation under Your care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to the other nations of the earth. Grant that we may choose trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare and serve You faithfully in our generation; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.-Pastor Adam DeGroot is Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho, New Mexico..Audio Reflections Speaker: Rev. Harrison Goodman.Study Christ's words on the cross to see how you can show more Christlike grace in your life. Perfect for group or individual study, each chapter has a Q&A at the end, and the back of the book includes a leader guide. Available now from Concordia Publishing House.

Laura Kane-Punyon of Buffalo, NY created Our Table because she loves experiencing the vulnerability, generosity, and power of women in real-life community. The purpose of this group is to grow and foster the Our Table community between in-person events Laura began her professional career in the NYC-area hedge fund industry, specializing in transitioning siloed department cultures into high-functioning interdisciplinary teams. After the birth of her first child, she returned to the Buffalo region, joining The Kane Firm, CPA as Practice Manager. Fueled by her own diagnosis and five subsequent neurosurgeries, Laura has been a national spokesperson for the Chiari malformation and syringomyelia communities since the age of 14. We had the honor of having Joy Coelho and Jay Denman from the JingSlingers on the show today. They were nice enough to come into our studio for a really fun show. The best part about it was we got to try all their amazing food. You can see that below. They brought over all of their amazing recipes that will be available in their upcoming cookbook which is available here. There are a few things I really like about Joy and Jay. They are very genuine and are some of the most passionate people you'll ever meet. I have to say in our field it's so refreshing to meet people that are really passionate about what they're doing. People going after their dreams is always who you want to surround yourself with. :) The other thing I like about them is they are very inclusive. So whether you're a raw vegan, vegetarian, paleo person or even somebody who eats raw meat (well maybe not the raw meat part), they've got something you're going to love! They cater to all kinds of dietary lifestyles which is also so cool to see. So many times in our world people become so polarized and identify with being "vegan" or "paleo". As if that wasn't enough they are very well attuned with Ayurveda principles in terms of diet and nutrition and they couple that with ancient Chinese herbalism and superfoods. So in their recipes they have superfoods, tonic herbs of all kinds, mushrooms (which are powerhouses for your health) and they combine them in a delicious way. Their foods not only taste amazing but they're medicinal and help to lower inflammation and build the immune system while helping you to lose weight. Who thought you could strengthen your immune system, lower inflammation and flood your system with enzymes, vitamins and minerals with doughnuts? I'm telling you their food is addicting and tastes so good you wouldn't even know it's healthy for you. The JingSlingers are taking things to a brand new level. I hope you liked the show. If you did, please share it! :) Please consider bookmarking (and using!) our Amazon link, leaving us an iTunes review (we LOVE those!) or supporting us on Patreon so we can take things to a new level. Peter H. Reynolds is my guest on this week's episode of ‘Sylvia & Me.' That's right, a MAN! You see, Peter is a New York Times bestselling children's book author and illustrator. I received an advance copy of his latest picture book ‘Our Table'. Within five minutes of reading it, I realized that this book needs to be read to children because the adult reading it needs to learn what it offers. And then I went back and read Peter's other books, including his award winning ‘The Dot'.

Taste of Dublin returns to the Inveagh Gardens this week. A celebration of eating, drinking and entertainment, the festival runs for five days from the 1st- 5th September and features live cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and food stalls from all over the world. This year, Our Table will be joining the festival line up, selling a selection of products and showcasing start up businesses from the migrant background. Our Table was founded by activist Ellie Kisyombe and food writer Michelle Darmody, who met through a shared conviction that Direct Provision was an unjust system and that talking about it through food might help to start an important conversation. In today's episode, Kisyombe and Darmody speak to Róisin Ingle about the origins of Our Table and their involvement in this year's festival. Also joining the conversation is pastry chef and Irish Times food writer Aoife Noonan who will be doing a live demonstration at Taste of Dublin this Sunday. See https://dublin.tastefestivals.com/ for all details.
“If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”—Shirley Chisholm What does it mean to invite all to the table for a conversation about Black womanhood? What if the space is shared and the invitation and is an open one? What might we discuss and what might we learn? For our sixth episode, host KC Trommer spoke with sociologist and Gallatin faculty member Shatima Jones and her former student Cheyenne Porcher about A Seat at Our Table, a collaboration between Professor Jones' courses, "Detangling the Business of Black Women's Hair" and "Black Experiences in Literature, Movies, and Television," and Gallatin's online platform for student reading, writing, and research, Confluence.
This episode is one of four in a special series from enfleshed called "Our Table: Trans Spirituality Conversations." Contributors to this episode include Myles Markham, Rev. Remington Johnson, Rev. Kai Greer, and Sam Ames. Hosted by our first trans faith intern, Nite Hunt, Our Table is a set of conversations among trans and gnc folks about spirituality, joy, ritual, gender, and sex. Nite explains: “Though our stories and presence are often erased, trans spiritual and religious people exist and always have. Many of us have found spiritual wisdom and practices to be essential sources of strength, comfort, nourishment, and solidarity. However, because many religious spaces still don't welcome us or the conversations we want to have, it's difficult to find resources for exploring our spirituality together.”

Read more details and see photos on this blog post.I interview Narendra Varma, cofounder of Our Table Cooperative in Sherwood, Oregon, a cooperative model for community food systems. Our Table grows organic products and offers education and supports food security through their nonprofit.Narendra and his wife Machelle started Our Table in 2013 after working in the tech industry and moving to Portland from the Seattle area. Narendra grew up in a very strong household culture of cooking, since his mom was a caterer. He and his wife were interested in creating what they call a holy nexus between food and community. They came up with a vision for a more resilient and interdependent local food culture on a community scale. They set out create a community owned food system that was rooted in personal and cooperative relationships among all of the people involved, as well as the natural systems at play. Our Table is a multi-stakeholder cooperative, the only one in the food industry that includes consumers and food producers. Narendra describes the cooperative as a work in progress and an experiment, because they're not sure if it will work in the long term. He hopes others will be inspired to learn from their mistakes so they can make their own.Our Table consists of three stakeholder groups: (1) the workers (farmers, storekeepers, cooks, etc.), (2) independent farms or producers of food not made directly on Our Table's farm, and (3) the people who eat the food. Each person has a seat at the table and one vote in the business. Our Table is unique as a cooperative, because each member has one vote, no matter their role or commitment level. The cooperative has a 60-acre farm in Sherwood, Oregon, the base of operations, where they grow 50 to 60 different varieties of vegetables, berries, and flowers, and occasionally rear livestock. They also have 16 other producer members who grow grain and meat or make kombucha, pickles, and other items. That food gets sold at the full-service grocery store on the farm. Our Table has a CSA program, and they sell products to restaurants, grocery stores, etc. They also offer farm dinners and educational events. Our Table believes diversity leads to resilience, so they plant a high diversity of crops and implement diversity in their business structures as well. They have a 501(c)3 nonprofit, which focuses on education and food insecurity mutual aid. They also work with local schools to develop a farm-based education curriculum. We talked about organic vs. conventional farming and soil health, and Narendra pointed out that farm workers are heavily exposed to chemicals in agriculture. Farm workers have the highest incidence of poisoning and death and health impacts from exposure to pesticides and artificial fertilizers. We discussed the difficult working conditions for our nation's food producers and farmers. Our Table strives to pay their workers a fair wage based on a living wage calculator, at least 30 percent higher than the state minimum wage. In addition, all employees become member owners of the cooperative, with the option to become salaried.I asked Narendra what lessons they can pass on to others who'd like to replicate what Our Table is doing. “The first lesson I would say is patience. It takes time. Second, it all hinges on community…when you build communal ties, other things fall into place…but it takes time to build community.”Listen to the podcast to learn Narendra's ideal meal, how he was raised to view food as he grew up in India, and his hopes for the next five years.

Today I'm interviewing Amanda Kanashiro, the blogger behind Eat at Our Table, a food blog dedicated to helping others live a gluten free lifestyle. Several years ago, Amanda was diagnosed with celiac disease, which requires a strict gluten free diet. While she was heartbroken over the food she could no longer eat, Amanda decided that she would start a blog to share all the dishes that she was learning to recreate gluten-free, especially the Peruvian dishes from her husband's family. Since then, Amanda's family and her blog have grown together. She now works full time as a food blogger and has discovered through blogging a community of friends and fellow autoimmune patients that view her blog as a resource. For Amanda, she hopes that her blog provides people with great recipes, but also information that helps them confidently live gluten-free without feeling like they're missing out. About the strength she draws from the memories of her family and her life in Africa, overcoming depression, the importance of your own home, raising children within the Direct Provision system where they do not even have a kitchen table to sit down at, and the difficulty for teenagers integrating their life in Direct Provision with that of their school life, how the support and empathy of Darina Allen helped her to find her self confidence again, accepting her life here, and ultimately building a community of friends and a new life here. She is a believer that personal stories can lead to inclusiveness. She was named a 2016 Baltimore Social Innovator by the Warnock Foundation. She also is a fellow with the Institute of Islamic, Christian and Jewish studies. Zunikoff is a strong advocate of not only telling powerful stories but in “listening” to the voices of others. In 2050, there are going to be 9-10 billion people living on this planet - there will be less land available and climate change will become even more pronounced. How are we going to feed everyone? We have a system in Ireland called direct provision that keeps asylum seekers who have come here to seek refuge from violence and the threat of being killed in their home countries in institutions with very poor living conditions. The direct provision system forces people into a limbo for long periods of time where they can’t work, build a meaningful life for themselves in this country, and have no control over the food they eat and their overall day to day lives. It is an inhumane system that needs to be ended. In this episode I chatted with Ellie Kisyombe who has lived in the direct provision system since 2010, is an activist, and founder of Our Table, an organisation that works to highlight the direct provision system as well as bringing people together to learn new skills and share experiences around food. FRIENDS!! What a season it’s been! We’ve so deeply enjoyed sharing space and talking about all the moods and ALL THE FEELS with you all. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to have this platform to connect and build community with y’all; we family now. As the summer comes to a close, we’re reflecting back, and WHOO!, have we been on a journey. Simply Joyful Podcast with Kristi Clover | Encouragement for your Faith and Family
Episode #027 with Kristin SchellThe Art of Practicing Hospitality Head to KristiClover.com/027 to see all the Show Notes & Awesome Quotes that we collected for you! If you are not already familiar with Kristin and her turquoise table, after today, you are going to want to run out and check out her amazing new book The Turquoise Table. It’s about finding community and connecting with those in your community in your own front yard. You are in for a treat today. Romans 12 is one of my favorite passages—especially verses 12-13, which talk about the “practicing hospitality.” This is what we are talking about today—hospitality. We all have a lot of gifts from the Lord. As I’ve mentioned on other episodes, I love helping people. A passion of mine to help people simplify—to know when to say “no” to the things that we can, so we can say “yes” to the things that God wants us focused on. When we start simplifying, we start seeing the joy that comes from that. One of the major themes that you will see woven into each of these podcasts is guests who have said “yes” to God in one way or another. Even when we say “yes” to the most simple of things, God can show up and use that in a big way—just like He used the little boy with his loaves of bread and fishes. That’s exactly what we’re going to hear in this episode. How one person said yes to God in the area of hospitality. We all have different gifts, but God tells us to practice hospitality! Today we’re going to break down the difference between hospitality and entertaining. Hospitality is opening the door. And as you will hear in this episode, Kristin says you can say “yes” to God and “yes” to hospitality and you don’t even have to open your door! Put Your Money Where Your Food Is with Narendra Varma of Our Table Cooperative In today’s episode, host Amy Pearl sits down with Narendra Varma of Our Table Cooperative. Narendra started Our Table Cooperative in 2011 with his wife Michelle, after they spent years in the investment and tech spaces. Narendra talks about how these experiences helped him realize a vision for a better food system and find a piece of land to achieve that vision. Our Table is a unique cooperative, because it brings together all three stakeholders: workers, consumers, and producers. What follows is an inspirational vision that we hope will spring up all over the globe. Host Amy Pearl, Hatch Innovation Guests Narendra Varma, Director, Our Table Cooperative Born and raised in India, Narendra came to the United States in 1986 to attend Brown University. After graduating with a degree in Educational Technology, he went to work at Microsoft Corporation where his greatest achievement was a kids’ movie creation product that was a commercial dud but spawned an avid fan group. While at Microsoft, Narendra was lucky enough to meet his wife, Machelle, and receive a stockoption-fueled financial windfall allowing him to quit his day job. After an obligatory globe-trotting walkabout, Machelle and Narendra spent the next ten years raising children, renovating houses, and coming to the realization that our system of agriculture is broken, our economic and financial systems are a pyramid scheme, and that, between peak resources and climate change, our children likely face a difficult future. Unfortunately, these subjects made poor dinner conversation so Machelle and Narendra decided to devote their time, money, and energy towards an effort to reimagine our food system around the principals of Permaculture Design and Biodynamic agriculture. They purchased a 58-acre farm just outside Portland, Oregon and founded a vertically integrated food and agriculture cooperative that is experimenting with new ways to grow, process and sell food. In this episode you’ll hear about The co-operative model How small the percentage of the money you pay for a crop goes to the farmer How the land-use laws in Oregon helped Narendra start Our Table Cooperative The role permaculture played in his design and ideation process The vertical integration of food The reasons for his unique blend of polyculture and monoculture farming Multi-stakeholder member-owned cooperatives Links to Resources Mentioned Hatch Innovation Hatch Oregon Our Table Cooperative Slow Money Permaculture Powells Books Our Table’s Co-Op Model The Big Short

Soon after Taylor Scheftstrom began working for Airbnb she recognized a need for reaching out to Airbnb hosts in the Portland area. Debi Hertert of hostingyourhome.com talks with her about working at Airbnb and Taylor’s efforts to build personal relationships between hosts and Airbnb staff. Taylor grew up in southern Oregon in a tiny town of Rogue River. She was a sports girl, especially horses, and was interested in travel from when she was young. She traveled to Italy in high school, and at U of O studied photography and political science. And she took several - in her words - “hair brained” trips including one walk across England in a summer of endless rain. They were broke so had bought tourist cartoon maps instead of the real maps, got lost over and over, and eventually all their equipment got destroyed by rain. But she still wanted to travel! After college, she lived in Turkey for 3 months, and then moved back to Portland. There, a friend who was already working at the new Portland Airbnb office encouraged Taylor to apply. She hired on in September, 2014 just as the office was building out and the service was growing very fast. She was recruited for the Trip Experience team. That team takes calls from hosts who have problems or questions during on-going stays. The answering team might be in Portland or other cities depending on the time of the call. Now, Taylor does more of the community outreach. She recognized a need for official outreach from Airbnb office to local hosts to bridge the disconnect. It wasn’t happening and she felt it was a need. So she and colleagues came up with the first host dinner at Airbnb in October of 2015. That dinner was the first time the office had officially – but personally - reached out to local hosts. Debi recalled starting the Meetup.com group in November of 2014, on the way to SF, because she wanted to connect with other hosts who were going to the SF Open and there was no way to communicate on the Airbnb platform. Taylor talked about how much progress has been made since then, and Debi complimented her on how great a job she has done in her outreach efforts. Debi asked Taylor if she has traveled with Airbnb, and the answer is that she loves it. Paris, all over Iceland, SF, Oregon including Allan and Dabney’s lookout tower, other fire lookout in Bend; Washington, a B&B in Palmer Alaska, run by an older man by himself with a full breakfast every day, and British Columbia. Debi asked her if it’s rewarding to see how well it works, and Taylor does love seeing that. She doesn’t mention she works at Airbnb unless it comes up. She likes hearing stories from the hosts she stays with. She also loves the (NPR) Moth story telling event and podcast, and thought it would be cool to have Portland Airbnb hosts also tell stories. So, she organized Host Story dinners at the Airbnb facility. Things can be stressful for the Portland Airbnb employees because they often hear the problems people are having. So these opportunities to hear positive stories from Hosts are fun for them. Debi encouraged her, when she travels and uses Airbnb homes, to let hosts know she works for Airbnb. Debi loves it when Airbnb employees stay with her, feeling like it is a compliment that they chose her space. Officially, Taylor is the Airbnb Portland community point of contact. She works on community events, works with Dave Mathews on mobilization efforts, and brings together Hosts and guests to join employees in citizenship efforts. And lately, she has been trying to connect hosts with local small businesses. An example of Host outreach is Portland’s new Biketown rental system – Taylor has been contacting Hosts and organizing free informational rides where the Biketown rep comes and teaches the Hosts how they and their guests can use the system. It is really great because Hosts don’t need to own bikes. Debi asked Taylor about job flexibility, and Taylor said if you have a good idea that you are really excited about, you can make it happen. It is a really cool part of working there. She still works part time with the Trip Experience team. Deb describes the office building and how cool it is – Taylor said all the rooms are employee-designed, like the “Ship Room” that this interview is taking place in. Employees came in one night and set it all up. It is a fun-loving environment. The building is an open plan and you can work on a different floor, lounge on a couch, use one of the meeting nooks or whatever. There are shift schedules with people coming and going at different times, and there are many little “landing rooms”, and “listing rooms” which are based on a listing the team likes somewhere in the world and recreates it for their team meeting spot. Taylor said they are now going to build out the 4th floor and there will be 20+ listing rooms overall. They talked about the themed ladies rooms and how fun they are. Debi’s daughter and others are jealous of their friends who work at Airbnb, often because of the food! Taylor is super complementary of their food program and told Debi about how hard the team works on sourcing locally and ethically. The Food Service Team makes it a goal, not only to serve healthy and delicious food, but at the same time to economically support local agriculture and farms. “Our Table” in Sherwood, Oregon is one cooperative they support and buy food that is ethically and locally sourced. It’s a small farm cooperative, really focused on the local community. [caption id="attachment_563" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Taylor serving at outreach event for local Hosts. Airbnb Food Service rocks! So do vegetables from Our Table![/caption] Debi asked Taylor about challenges at work. Taylor said it’s hard because the company has grown so quickly. The service has become so popular that you are always playing catch up. All the team members want Hosts and guests to get it, and sometimes feel bummed if they can’t get it perfect. They all believe in the mission (and, she notes, millions of other people do as well), so when it isn’t perfect, they often feel stressed. Debi asked Taylor about living here without a car. How does that work for her? Taylor said her fiancé Patrick has a car, but she bikes to work and has always hated car commuting. Taylor said she still meets local hosts for the first time and really wants all area Hosts to know that she is interested in meeting them and building up communications. She can’t give her email out but listeners who want to contact her can go through Debi via debi@hostingyourhome.com . Debi mentioned frustration that people have, not being able to find an email address or a phone number for Airbnb. Taylor says it is hard to find the number on the website, because the system wants to answer phone calls for people who are really in a bind. But she says the phone number is always on the booking so you can find it there. And you can go to past trips, and find it. The number is 415-800-5959. The toll free number is 855-424-7262, (855-4-Airbnb). And you can always just Google the Airbnb customer service number. There is a special number for Superhosts (note that if you dial that number and are not a Superhost, you will eventually get disconnected L ) Be sure to see information about the farm cooperative “Our Table” at http://www.ourtable.us/
