Born to blue collar workers in rural Illinois, Peggy McCall-Robertson inherited a strong work ethic, and from her father gained a love of tinkering and learning how things work. Peggy served as a Youth Director for the Methodist Church in central Arkansas for nearly 20 years, followed by retail work that gave her the experience needed to develop a business plan of her own. The first Miracle League was created in Georgia in 2000 with the goal of providing opportunities for children with disabilities to play baseball, offering a huge boost to their physical and mental wellbeing. Inspired, Peggy partnered with the Little Rock Rotary Club 99 to bring the program to Arkansas. In 2006, the first Miracle League of AR season opened with Peggy as Executive Director. When she isn't organizing "the greatest game on turf", Peggy enjoys camping, cooking, and helping her husband with his own creative projects.
If this is your first time with us, know that today is not a “regular” Sunday. Just one week ago, we celebrated Easter together—singing, praying together, and connecting scripture with our daily lives. And while we will do all those things today, we are also acutely aware of just how much can change in a week. This past Tuesday, Dana Schwendeman, our Youth Director for the past 8 ½ years, passed away suddenly. Each time someone in our community passes, it leaves a void. When that person is on staff, and has been for the better part of a decade, I'm discovering that void is much larger. Dana was someone who helped us to understand who God has called us to be… she loved us and formed us… her finger prints are all around us. And so today, as we gather to worship our God like we do each and every Sunday, we do so with deep sadness in our hearts. One of our values is Honest Worship—we invite everyone to participate in worship authentically and holistically; heart, mind, soul, and body. Today, we are reminded that sometimes, worship isn't “happy,” but there is joy and comfort to be found when we are together.

Success is creating communities where students find belonging and discipleship that sustains their faith journey long after graduation.=========

God gave us the command to not murder nor commit adultery to protect what He values most—people, relationships, and the condition of our hearts. These commands are not just about avoiding wrong but about cultivating love, trust, and spiritual wholeness. Jesus takes them further by showing that sin begins within—anger leads to destruction, and lust breaks covenant long before actions do. That's why we're called to guard our hearts. When our hearts are healthy and surrendered to God, we build lives that honor Him and reflect His love.Edwin IzumigawaSunday March 30, 2025 Live at 6:00 PM

In 2012, just two days before her 16th birthday, Sunnie Carney lost her father to homicide. Through her personal journey of grief, mental health struggles, and ultimately healing, she discovered a critical gap in support services - one that affected countless children in similar situations. This revelation led her to found Children of Homicide Victims (COHV) in Kansas City, an organization dedicated to restoring hope, love, and faith to children who have lost parents to violence. COHV serves children from infancy through age 17, with a particular focus on ages 8-16 - a developmental period already complicated by natural growth and change. These children often face misdiagnosis in school settings, where their trauma responses are mistaken for behavioral disorders. Through COHV's comprehensive support system, they receive academic assistance, mental health resources, and perhaps most importantly, a community of others who truly understand their experience. What sets COHV apart is its team - 75% of staff members are themselves children of homicide victims. This shared experience creates an authentic connection with the children they serve, showing them living proof that their circumstances don't define their future. The organization's name, abbreviated as COVE, reflects its mission to be a protected harbor for these young souls navigating unimaginable loss. In this powerful conversation, Sunnie shares success stories of transformation, discusses the unique challenges faced by grandparents suddenly thrust into primary caregiver roles, and explains how COHV is working to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Her work reminds us that while we cannot prevent every tragedy, we can create communities of support that help children not just survive their loss, but emerge as future leaders and agents of positive change. About Sunnie Carney: Founder, Executive Director Sunnie was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2017, where she was awarded a bachelor's degree in Communications, and she is currently attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis to obtain her Masters degree in Education. Sunnie has a huge heart for children. She identifies as a child of a homicide victim. Aside from COHV, she is also a member at The Refuge KC, the Youth Director of Refuge Little League Youth Ministry. Sunnie's goal is to be the voice and the light that leads people to change and the help that transforms a wounded child's heart and mind.
