We're continuing our childhood picks with 1995's Now and Then, starring an absolutely stacked cast including Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell, Demi Moore, Gaby Hoffmann, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffiths, Rita Wilson and Ashleigh Aston Moore. But what is this film? Does it even exist? Waxing nostalgic about the bittersweet passage from childhood to puberty in this tender coming-of-age tale, four childhood girlfriends – Teeny, Chrissy, Samantha and Roberta – recall the magical summer of 1970. During their walk down memory lane, they reconcile experiences with boys, secrets, bullies and more. (Sourced from Letterboxd) Will this girls version of Stand By Me stand up? How much Now and how much Then are we talking? And when is the return of Ashleigh Aston Moore? All this and more in our latest Mixed Bag!

It's Just The Gist  - "F*cking White People" Edition; The story of the 1981 film ROAR. A tale of how a rich naive Hollywood couple spent over a decade making a movie that starred them, their kids and 150 lions, tigers, leopards, panthers, ALLL the big cats. The movie was pitched as a "family comedy", but is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous films of all time. Roar starred Tippy Hedron (Star of Hitchcock's The Birds and others) her daughter Melanie Griffiths, and the rest of their family. The plot is broadly "we can save the world/animal kingdom/lions and tigers etc are all big friendly besties who just are misunderstood and we can live with them in harmony". Sounds cute in theory, maybe in adorable cartoons, but filming with 150 big cats gives very different results. Turns out, big cats gunna big cat; the films credits say no animals were harmed in the making of the movie (lies lol), but they don't say anything about how many PEOPLE were mauled, scalped, attacked, and generally not treated as one would hope to be treated at work. Alongside the brilliant, The Long Goodbye (reviewed elsewhere in this podcast) one of the two lost classics and twin pillars of neo-noir. Master-director, Arthur Penn( Bonnie and Clyde), helms Gene Hackman in a highly unusual, cerebral, existential gum-shoe tail, where the characters live on shifting sands, the protagonist has only a limited idea of what's going on and is the unknowing creator of his own story. Very early turns for James Woods and (given she's nude) and uncomfortably young, Melanie Griffiths.

This week Tim is planning to take his lady away for a few nights and gets all romantic, Rob’s been to the hospital for a check up on his wrist again and we remember the days of Speedball 2, Kick Off 2 and Rainbow Islands on the Atari ST/Amiga and Fortnite has given us Season X. Rob has finally found a copy of the thriller ‘Pacific Heights’ from 1990 starring Michael Keaton, Matthew Modine and Melanie Griffiths and we also figure out that Michael Keaton has an occasional trait when delivering some of his lines. Tim talks about The Boys on Amazon Prime, the Seth Rogan link and Rob tells us that he just doesn’t like James Franco and has no idea why. This weeks listener story is by Tara who tells us of her daughter’s possible past lives and the stories she tells (but Rob reads it out as she didn’t want to deal with the fame); in the news a lady in Australia gets offered money for her under garments, a delivery driver leaves an unexpected parcel and what does Amazon Alexa hear that you might not want her to? To finish the episode, Uncle Tim has put together this weeks Beat The Intro Quiz but the question is, Can you beat Rob? As always we want to hear your listener stories and feature you in our show, record them on your phone or computer, voice, video or simply write the story and we’ll do the rest, then send it to fromunderthethumb@gmail.com; it couldn’t be simpler.

Love and Legality: questions of wellbeing for irregular migrants and their citizen partners

Melanie Griffiths, University of Bristol, gives a talk for the COMPAS seminar series. For academics, politicians and NGOs alike, the issues seen to relate to irregular migrants, especially if they are male, tend to revolve around questions of legality, criminality and mobility. Little concern is generally afforded to their emotional lives and wellbeing. Drawing on qualitative research conducted with UK-based precarious male migrants with British or EU citizen partners and children, this talk considers the effect of having family ties in the UK on the men’s experience of the immigration system, as well as the impact of immigration concerns on family life itself. A variety of repercussions are identified in relation to the formation and sustainability of partnerships and families, including in terms of suspicion over motives, the threat of enforced separation and other relationship strains. Particular attention is given to immigration detention and the prohibition of employment as examples of ways in which the immigration system reaches into the heart of family life and produce gendered implications for the men’s ability to be the parents and partners they wish to be. The talk also considers the wellbeing of the British and European women in mixed-citizenship couples, exploring the impacts of the immigration struggles of their loved ones on the women’s sense of security, privilege and belonging as citizens. Considering wellbeing in the context of relationships illuminates the significant and wide-ranging impact of the immigration system on family lives and gender roles. Laying bare the fallacy of migrant/citizen binaries, such impacts not only affect irregular migrants, but also the citizens close to them, who are not themselves subject to immigration control but whose lives are nonetheless shaped by immigration objectives.
