Actor John Scott Clough appeared in two of the great 80s movies - one underrated and one super cheesy. His big break came in the Sidney Poitier directed Fast Forward about a dance troupe from Ohio who move to the Big Apple to "make it". After appearances in other movies and TV shows of the era like Family Ties, Empty Nest and the Love Boat, he also had a juicy role in Gross Anatomy with Matthew Modine and Christine Lahti. He gives us juicy tidbits from all of this and more including eventually retiring from acting and spending the last few years battling cancer. If I can't use this platform to connect with people I've always found interesting (music or not) then what's the point? Hope you enjoy it!  www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

On today's episode from December 26th, 1987, we spend time with Siskel & Ebert and two comedy legends, Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy. Both Good Morning, Vietnam and Eddie Murphy Raw were huge hits that year and were built around their stars' personas, further cementing Williams and Murphy as two of the biggest stars of the decade. Do their brands of humor hold up all these years later? Can topical humor from back then work today? We get into all that as well as a Bill Cosby movie that most certainly does not hold up. We also look at a movie with a much different vibe starring Christine Lahti.

Tread Perilously's Patreon subscriber request month continues with a look at Evil via the episode called "C is for Cop." When a New York police officer shoots a stranded Black motorist in the middle of the night, he claims demonic possession as his defense. The team is soon called in to investigate. It leads David almost immediately to the officer's wrist tattoo -- a symbol that correlates with one of the sigils. Is there a cabal within the department (and television shows about police) going back a century? Meanwhile, Ben confronts his night terrors (sort of) and Kristen tries to hide her part in LeRoux's death. Justin is once again confronted by a secret show, and because of its nature, comparisons to Locke & Key become inevitable. Erik proves incapable of saying the name "Katja" correctly. Justin lauds the cast while Erik gives credit to Christine Lahti for a specialty skill. Justin stumps for Tremors. The Shield is once again lauded. The Predator is not. A discussion about "as you know" dialogue breaks out. Erik tries to be complementary to Ridley Scott while Justin considers the real reason why recent MCU movies don't quite work. Gods are invoked, Gul Dukat gets referenced, and Half Dome becomes a higher power.

The Movie Bar, Episode 6: ...And Justice for All Walks Into the Bar! The Diad and Bedroth head to Baltimore to watch Al Pacino in one of his many Oscar-nominated performances as Arthur Kirkland, a lawyer who struggles with his conscience and with the legal system itself in the 1979 legal drama...And Justice for All - as always, from the dual standpoints of casual moviegoer and legal expert. Directed by Norman Jewison from a screenplay by Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, ...And Justice For All stars Jack Warden, John Forsythe, and Pacino, with strong supporting turns from Lee Strasberg, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Lahti, and Craig T. Nelson. Arthur Kirkland is a passionate young lawyer whose pursuit of true justice, especially for society's cast-offs, puts him at odds with the powers that be - particularly the ruthless Judge Henry T. Fleming, whose strict adherence to the letter of the law is keeping one of Kirkland's clients behind bars far longer than his crime deserves. As he deals with numerous other struggles, including his grandfather's decline into dementia, a colleague's mental breakdown, and another client's tragic reaction to a prison sentence, Kirkland is drawn, against his will, into the defense of Judge Fleming himself, who has been accused of rape. Will Kirkland's sense of duty compel him to provide a sound defense of his nemesis, or will his strong moral compass lead him down a path that is incompatible with his responsibility as an attorney? Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer, who began his career on the stage in England, before emigrating to the U.S. in his early twenties. He made his theatrical debut in the U.S. in “The Boy's Own Story”, a one-man show about a soccer goalkeeper, at the Julian Theatre in San Francisco. The show was an instant success with critics and audiences, winning Jim the Bay Area Critics' Best Actor Award. The show was then produced Off-Broadway and he quickly gained the attention of the New York theatre scene. That same year (1982), he was cast in Noel Coward's “Present Laughter” by George C. Scott, who directed/starred in the revival, which also featured Nathan Lane, Christine Lahti, Dana Ivey, and Kate Burton. The show was a big hit on Broadway and Piddock soon found himself appearing in a string of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including the original US production of “Noises Off”, “The Knack” at the Roundabout Theatre, and “Make and Break” with Peter Falk at the Kennedy Center. After replacing Frank Langella in “Design For Living” at the Circle-In-The-Square theatre, he moved to Los Angeles and has since appeared in a long succession of tv shows, such as “The Tracey Ullman Show”, “Coach”, “Max Headroom”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Mad About You”, “Angel”, “ER”, “Friends”, “Crossing Jordan”, “The Drew Carey Show”, “Lost”, “Monk”, “Without A Trace”, “Dollhouse”, “Party Down”, “Law And Order: LA”, “Castle”, “Two And A Half Men”, “Children's Hospital”, “Mom”, “The Royals”, and “The Grinder”. He has also starred in several notable tv movies and mini-series, like “From The Earth To The Moon”, “A Mom For Christmas”, “She Creature” on HBO, and “The Women Of Windsor”. He appeared in his first movie in the top-grossing film of 1989, “Lethal Weapon 2”, in which one of his lines, “But…you're black” in answer to Danny Glover's request to emigrate to South Africa, became a catchphrase for the film. Other feature film roles soon followed, including notable appearances in “Independence Day”, “Traces Of Red”, “Multiplicity”, “Burn Hollywood Burn”, “Austin Powers 3”, “A Different Loyalty”, “Love For Rent”, “See This Movie”, “Love For Rent”, “The Prestige”, “Epic Movie”, “Who's Your Caddy?”, “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising”, “Meet The Spartans”, Woody Allen's “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”, “Get Him To The Greek”, “The Cold Light Of Day”, “The Five Year Engagement”, “1915”, “Think Like A Man Too”, and “Kill Your Friends”. But it is probably his diverse performances in the improvised Christopher Guest comedies “Best In Show” (as the Dog Show commentator with Fred Willard), “A Mighty Wind”, and “For Your Consideration” that he has gained the most attention as a chameleon-like character actor, barely recognizable from role to role. As a voice actor, he is most notable for providing the voice of Major Zero in the English version of the massively popular video game “Metal Gear Solid 3”, Bolero the Bull in the movie “Garfield 2”, and the fictional artistic director of Forever Young Films, Kenneth Loring, doing a hilarious commentary in the directors' cut of the Coen Brothers' “Blood Simple”. His voice work in animated tv series and in video games is extensive and includes “The Lion King”, “Extreme Ghostbusters”, “The New Batman Adventures”, “C-12: Final Resistance”, “Return To Castle Wolfenstein”, “The Lord Of The Rings”, “101 Dalmatians 2”, “The Bard's Tale”, “Dead Space: Downfall”, “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien”, Alfred in “Batman: Under The Red Hood”, “Batman: The Brave And The Bold”, “Skylanders: SWAP Force”, “Turbo FAST”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. He currently released his best-selling book, “Caught With My Pants Down and Other Tales From A Life in Hollywood.” We are so grateful to have him as a guest on, “Black Canvas.”

That's essentially the plot of this week's episode of Forgotten Cinema, as they discuss the 1988 Sidney Lumet film Running on Empty starring River Pheonix, Judd Hirsch, and Christine Lahti. Listen in as Mike Butler and Mike Field talk facts and their opinion on Butler's fiance's (Elyse from Crackin' One Open) first audience choice selection. The Mikes are super impressed with all of the performances in this film, especially from Pheonix and Lahti. Butler believes Lahti was robbed of an Oscar nod (Pheonix was nominated). The performers have done their homework and know their characters inside and out. Its in the story and writing that Field and Butler sometimes run into some issues. But overall this is a great film where the performances alone should be reason enough to check it out, or give it a revisit. Week 4 - Running on Empty (1988) Jonathan wasn't sure which film to pick, but after doing some research selected Running on Empty (1988). Sidney Lumet directs the film which stars River Phoenix, Christine Lahti, and Judd Hirsch. The movie is about "The eldest son of a fugitive family comes of age and wants to live a life of his own." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Based on Charles Brandt’s nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, it is a film about friendship and loyalty between men who commit unspeakable acts and turn on a dime against each other, and the possibility of redemption in a world where it seems as distant as the moon. The roster of talent behind and in front of the camera is astonishing, and at the core of The Irishman are four great artists collectively hitting a new peak: Joe Pesci as Pennsylvania mob boss Russell Bufalino, Al Pacino as Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa, and Robert De Niro as their right-hand man, Frank Sheeran, each working in the closest harmony imaginable with the film’s incomparable creator, Martin Scorsese. A Netflix release.Runtime: 3 hours 30 minutesDistributor: NetflixRelease Dates: November 1, 2019 (limited theatrical release) and November 27, 2019 (on Netflix) Motherless Brooklyn (Closing Night Selection/New York Premiere)In an unusually bold adaptation, writer-director-producer Edward Norton has transplanted the main character of Jonathan Lethem’s best-selling novel Motherless Brooklyn from modern Brooklyn into an entirely new, richly woven neo-noir narrative, reset in 1950s New York. Emotionally shattered by a botched job, Lionel Essrog (Norton), a lonely private detective with Tourette syndrome, finds himself drawn into a multilayered conspiracy that expands to encompass the city’s ever-growing racial divide and the devious personal and political machinations of a Robert Moses–like master builder, played by Alec Baldwin. Featuring a rigorously controlled star turn by Norton and outstanding additional supporting performances by Bruce Willis, Willem Dafoe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Leslie Mann, and Cherry Jones, plus a haunting soundtrack (featuring a score by Daniel Pemberton, with orchestration by Wynton Marsalis, and an original song by Thom Yorke), Motherless Brooklyn is the kind of movie Hollywood almost never makes anymore, and a complexly conceived, robust evocation of a bygone era of New York that speaks to our present moment. A Warner Bros. Picture.Runtime: 2 hours 24 minutesDistributor: Warner Bros. PicturesRelease Date: November 1, 2019 Marriage Story (Centerpiece Selection/New York Premiere)Noah Baumbach’s new film is about the rapid tangling and gradual untangling of impetuosity, resentment, and abiding love between a married couple negotiating their divorce and the custody of their son. Adam Driver is Charlie, a 100-percent New York experimental theater director; Scarlett Johansson is Nicole, his principal actress and soon-to-be L.A.-based ex-wife. Their “amicable” breakup devolves, one painful rash response and hostile counter-response at a time, into a legal battlefield, led on Nicole’s side by Laura Dern and on Charlie’s side by nice Alan Alda and not-so-nice Ray Liotta. What is so remarkable about Marriage Story is its frank understanding of the emotional fluctuations between Charlie and Nicole: they are both short-sighted, both occasionally petty, both vindictive, and both loving. The film is as harrowing as it is hilarious as it is deeply moving. With Merritt Wever and Julie Hagerty as Nicole’s sister and mom, and Azhy Robertson as their beloved son, Henry. A Netflix release.Runtime: 2 hours 16 minutesDistributor: NetflixRelease Dates: November 6, 2019 (limited theatrical release) and December 6, 2019 (on Netflix) Pain and Glory (New York Premiere)Pedro Almodóvar cuts straight to the heart with his intensely personal latest, which finds the great Spanish filmmaker tapping into new reservoirs of introspection and emotional warmth. Antonio Banderas deservedly won the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his miraculous, internalized portrayal of Salvador Mallo, a director not too subtly modeled on Almodóvar himself, whose growing health problems—including tinnitus, migraines, and spinal pain—and creative block have initiated a midlife reckoning. Moving in and out of time, evoking Salvador’s childhood in the sixties (featuring Penélope Cruz as his doting mother); his years of triumph in the eighties; and present-day Madrid, where he navigates new artistic challenges, Pain and Glory is both a moving summative statement on a career and an indication of more brilliant things to come. A Sony Pictures Classics release.Runtime: 1 hour 53 minutesDistributor: Sony Pictures ClassicsRelease Date: October 4, 2019 Parasite (New York Premiere)In Bong Joon-ho’s exhilarating new film, a threadbare family of four struggling to make ends meet gradually hatches a scheme to work for, and as a result infiltrate, the wealthy household of an entrepreneur, his seemingly frivolous wife, and their troubled kids. How they go about doing this—and how their best-laid plans spiral out to destruction and madness—constitutes one of the wildest, scariest, and most unexpectedly affecting movies in years, a portrayal of contemporary class resentment that deservedly won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or. As with all of this South Korean filmmaker’s best works, Parasite is both rollicking and ruminative in its depiction of the extremes to which human beings push themselves in a world of unending, unbridgeable economic inequality. The Academy Award winning actor Christine Lahti has captivated audiences in films like Swing Shift, in Broadway plays such as The Heidi Chronicles and God of Carnage, and in her Emmy-winning turn as Dr. Kathryn Austin on the CBS drama Chicago Hope. Her new book True Stories from an Unreliable Eyewitness: A Feminist Coming of Age -- which began as a set of staged monologues taken from episodes in her life -- resists the usual form of the performer's memoir to instead deliver a constellation of reflections that map her journey as a woman and an actress that couldn't be more timely. She sat down in our studio with B&N's Amanda Cecil to talk about what she wanted to accomplish with this unconventional new book.

New Podcast with Actor Matt Czuchry!   In this episode of "Kahnversations," we interview Matt Czuchry. After graduating college in May of 1999 with B.A. degrees in History and Political Science from College of Charleston, Matt was set on law school as his next life path.  But when thinking of his true passion, he was brought back to the indelible memories of his childhood.  Moments etched on his heart such as exiting a dilapidated movie theatre crying inconsolably after experiencing E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, or running around in his purple dyed underwear smashing couches while watching THE INCREDIBLE HULK on TV.  When thinking of his adult life, Czuchry could not ignore the magical moments captured through story, imagination, and character that had impacted his youth with such pure happiness. This childlike love of movies and television, combined with his horrible Law School Admission Test scores, pushed Matt’s gut towards an unexpected career choice.  In September of 1999, Czuchry took one of the most important risks of his life and decided to pursue a profession in acting.  On a perfectly nondescript Wednesday morning, Matt filled his car with everything he owned and left his hometown in Tennessee for a new life in California.  Since completing that life changing drive from Johnson City to Los Angeles, Czuchry has worked with Oscar® winners, Emmy® winners, and Tony Award® winners, while establishing himself as a leading man through credits spanning theatre, television, and film. Just one month after arriving on the West Coast, Matt found himself working with actor James Franco and writers Paul Feig, Mike White, and Judd Apatow in a small role on the critical darling FREAKS AND GEEKS.  Czuchry’s work on the classic fan favorite would turn into a major guest starring arc in the DAWSON'S CREEK spinoff series titled YOUNG AMERICANS, starring actress Kate Bosworth.  Although this show itself was short lived, Matt’s work on the project would garner the necessary attention to further his early career with the best creative minds in the business on television shows such as David E. Kelley’s THE PRACTICE and films like EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS, starring Scarlett Johansson. Two key television series, HACK and GILMORE GIRLS, would propel Czuchry’s early career towards leading man status.  While playing swindling thief Jamie Farrel on the series HACK from 2003-2004, Matt was able to hone his craft by learning from the show’s stars, Drama Desk Award winner David Morse and Emmy® winner Andre Braugher.  His work on HACK readied Czuchry for his breakout performance on the critically acclaimed hit GILMORE GIRLS.  From 2005-2007 Matt embodied the role of billionaire newspaper heir Logan Huntzberger.  For his work on the beloved series, Czuchry would go on to be nominated for three Teen Choice awards while gaining press in countless magazines and popularity on television sets across the globe. After completing his three year run on GILMORE GIRLS in 2007, Czuchry matured in his craft by choosing work in different genres spanning theatre, television, and film.  In September of 2007, Czuchry was on stage in the title role of Third, alongside Oscar® winner Christine Lahti, in Wendy Wasserstein’s West Coast premier of the play by the same name.  He followed this performance at the Geffen Theatre with a recurring arc on the Emmy® winning series FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.  In 2008, Matt took on the controversial lead character of Tucker Max in the movie adaptation of the New York Times best selling book, I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL.  Although the public’s response to the comedy was divisive, Czuchry’s performance was lauded by critics such as Owen Gleiberman in Entertainment Weekly who wrote, “Matt Czuchry, in a star performance, plays Tucker like a Ferris Bueller who bloomed into a charming sociopath.” Czuchry’s varied performances and choices across all genres in different mediums from 2007-2008 led to an offer to play the role of a manipulative lawyer in the two-time Emmy® nominated THE GOOD WIFE. Matt's seven seasons as Cary Agos on CBS Television’s THE GOOD WIFE (2009-2016) firmly established him as a leading man and a rising star while also earning him prestigious recognition from both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety’s annual Emmy® Contenders lists in 2015. Prior to these honors Czuchry won the Entertainment Weekly Best Supporting Actor EWwy Award (2011), received nominations for three consecutive SAG Ensemble Awards (2009-2011), and also garnered the highest praises from numerous critics such as David Hiltbrand of The Philadelphia Inquirer who wrote “Czuchry may be the best young actor on TV.”  Matt Richenthal of TV Fanatic further affirmed those sentiments by stating, “Cary is played brilliantly by Czuchry with the right combination of swagger, confidence, and vulnerability.”  Matt’s tireless dedication to his craft on THE GOOD WIFE, and over the course of his career, led to a defining performance on one of TV’s best shows while working alongside multiple-award winners Archie Panjabi, Christine Baranski, Julianna Margulies, Chis Noth, Josh Charles, Alan Cumming, Michael J. Fox, Matthew Perry, and F. Murray Abraham. In 1999, Matt Czuchry took a life changing risk by following his passion and gut to pursue his love of story, imagination, and character.  Today, Czuchry surrounds himself with the great talents of stage, television, and film on some of the most desirable projects in the entertainment industry, in an effort to make his own indelible mark on the hearts of others.  As Matt continues to tirelessly study his craft, he sets his sights on even greater career heights.  Knowing that his past work has laid the groundwork for future success, but each new performance and project choice demands an even better excellence. If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page!     There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.
