“The Dead Don't Hurt” is an indie western written and directed by Viggo Mortenson, who also starred in the film and composed the score. Costume Designer Anne Dixon joins me to discuss both the challenges of working on a multinational, low-budget film, the rewards of working with Viggo and the tone he sets (both on set and in front of the camera), and little easter eggs that thread through the entire film. It had a theatrical run earlier this summer and is now available for streaming.
It has been a very quiet week on the movie watching front, the summer of Deadpool/Wolverine has meant that the multiplexes are empty of new flicks and Netflix/Prime Video also seem to have shut down for the summer. But we still cast an eye over the newest Spongebob flick 'Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie', intense thriller 'Jericho Ridge' and wee show love to Viggo Mortenson and his new flick 'The Dead Dont Hurt' Hosted on Acast. REBROADCAST FROM May 31, 2024] Viggo Mortensen joins us to discuss writing, directing, and starring in the new Western romance, "The Dead Don't Hurt," about a couple relearning each other after the wife's husband returns from the Civil War. Mortensen is joined by actor Vicky Krieps, who plays Vivienne in the film. This segment is guest-hosted by Kousha Navidar

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall. My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout. The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive. In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism. Which film is king of the outback/queen of the end times?Find out!
On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger — the last episode of the year! — we watched Tony Scott's 1995 submarine action thriller, “Crimson Tide,” starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortenson and James Gandolfini, among many others. And to discuss “Crimson Tide,” we have an esteemed guest! Tony Gilroy, who you may know from his work on the Bourne films, political thrillers like “State of Play,” “Beirut,” legal thrillers like “Michael Clayton” or the recent Star Wars Disney Plus series “Andor.” Now, if you haven't watched “Crimson Tide” — and you should, stop this episode and go put it on — here's the score. In “Crimson Tide,” the crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, is put on high alert as civil war breaks out in post-Soviet Russia. Military units loyal to the ultra-nationalist rebel have taken control of a nuclear missile installation and have threatened nuclear war if threatened. The USS Alabama is commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey, a career veteran of the submarine corps. He has chosen the cerebral and inexperienced Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter to serve as his new executive officer. The two clash, eventually coming to an impasse over an Emergency Action Message order a missile launch against the Russian base. Ramsey wants to move forward while Hunter wants to delay action until the USS Alabama can clarify a second message received but interrupted as the crew confronted an enemy submarine. What follows is a confrontation, a mutiny, and a race to confirm the Alabama's true orders lest they fire the shot that starts a nuclear conflagration. The tagline for “Crimson Tide” was “Danger Runs Deep.”You can find “Crimson Tide” for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode will be on “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry and John Leguizamo. A movie which could only possibly be made by a writer/director because if another person had their hands on it, it would absolutely be a half hour shorter. The pacing is bad. The story is bonkers. The lead characters are boring. The film quality is poor. Their depiction of Native Americans is pretty racist. The politics are extremely suspect.BUT BOY DID THEY KNOW HOW TO CAST SOME MURDER ANGELS!Christopher Walken is Gabriel, a rogue angle on a mission to start a new war in heaven. Viggo Mortenson is Lucifer. You think you know what that looks like by reading that sentence? I promise you don't. Is he sexy? Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his heroes, comedy writer Dick DeBartolo who worked for both Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! Dick talks about how he landed both jobs, how they actually complimented each other and what it was like to go back and forth between the two offices in Manhattan. Recalling Match Game, Dick describes how dry the questions were when he started and how it was his idea to make the questions silly, which basically saved the show. Dennis also has lots of questions for Dick about his beloved Mad magazine, like who exactly was it for? And how did they create parodies of movies that were still in theaters without VHS tapes to refer to? And what does one of Dick's Mad magazine features look like typed on a page? Dick also talks about his personal life and recalls how he met his now-husband Dennis at the gym back in 1980...because of Mad. Other topics include: Dick's hilariously tender relationship with Mad founder Bill Gaines, Dick and Bill's secret Statue of Liberty spy adventure, Gay Sundays at Studio 54, what game show producing legends Mark Goodson and Bill Todman were like behind the scenes, why celebrities like Michael J. Fox, June Lockhart and Viggo Mortenson loved being parodied in Mad and that time Dick pretended to be Alfred E. Neuman's campaign manager when Alfred was running for president. The gang busts up the Jukebox Jamboree this week, as they review John Waters' first major Studio feature, Cry-Baby (1990). Starring Johny Depp as the title character, Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, the golden boy of the roughneck group of juvenile delinquent greasers known as the Drapes, a departure from the teen wholesome heart-throb characters he was known for playing prior to 1990. Anyone who knows John Waters' reputation may find Cry-Baby a surprisingly easy watch, due its distinct lack of filth and debauchery. We start the journey of reviewing one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time with Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring. We have a special correspondent call in from Hobbiton itself, Strangles joins us for Good, Bad, Ugly to discuss the blockbuster with us."The Fellowship of the Ring" is an absolute triumph in the world of cinema, delivering a spellbinding and faithful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece. Directed by Peter Jackson and released in 2001, this film takes viewers on an epic journey into the heart of Middle-earth, where adventure, friendship, and the battle between good and evil come to life in breathtaking fashion. One of the film's greatest achievements is its unwavering commitment to capturing the essence of Tolkien's world. From the lush landscapes of the Shire to the ominous darkness of Mordor, every location feels authentic and meticulously detailed. The craftsmanship that went into designing the costumes, sets, and props is nothing short of astounding. It's impossible not to be fully immersed in Middle-earth's rich tapestry. The ensemble cast is nothing short of extraordinary. Sir Ian McKellen's portrayal of Gandalf is a masterclass in acting, and Elijah Wood's Frodo Baggins is a character that elicits both sympathy and admiration. The entire Fellowship, including Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), and the rest, is impeccably cast, each member bringing their unique strengths to the group dynamic.Howard Shore's musical score is a character in itself, enriching every scene with emotion and grandeur. The hauntingly beautiful "Concerning Hobbits" theme contrasts perfectly with the epic and ominous undertones of the Mordor theme. It's a testament to how music can elevate a film to legendary status. The film's pacing is impeccable, balancing exposition with thrilling action sequences seamlessly. The decision to split Tolkien's dense narrative into three films was a wise one, allowing for depth and character development without sacrificing momentum."The Fellowship of the Ring" excels in its portrayal of the timeless themes of heroism, friendship, and the corrupting influence of power. It delves into the moral dilemmas faced by its characters, making them all the more relatable and human in a fantastical setting.Visually, this film was groundbreaking for its time, with groundbreaking CGI that still holds up today. The battles, particularly the skirmish at Amon Hen and the terrifying confrontation with the Balrog, are awe-inspiring spectacles that set new standards for epic fantasy filmmaking. In conclusion, "The Fellowship of the Ring" is a masterpiece that stands the test of time. It's a testament to the power of storytelling and filmmaking when executed with passion, dedication, and an unwavering respect for the source material. Whether you're a fan of fantasy or simply appreciate exceptional cinema, this film is a must-see, and it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on your cinematic journey. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

We kick off #AUGHOST with 1987's PRISON. Directed by Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT) and written HALLOWEEN producer Irwin Yablans, PRISON is a curious partnership between New World Pictures and Empire Pictures. And who's the beneficiary of this partnership? We all are. Don't let the title fool you. The Prison in PRISON offers loose rules, plenty of yard time, and a ghost that's out for revenge. In this prison, you're locked up with an ensemble cast including Chelsea Field (or Mrs. Bakula according to Marc) from BIRDS 2: LANDS END, Lane Smith (SON-IN-LAW) and some guy named Viggo Mortenson. He didn't do a whole lot outside of this movie but that doesn't stop Erica from creating a new fan club called the Viggans (pronounced, "vegans"). The meals are exceptional and they have open mic night. PRISON feels like it could have been an entry into the Hellraiser franchise or a Pauly Shore vehicle while also carving it's own path. Spoiler, we spend a lot of time talking about Pauly Shore.

The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Ed interviews Sahajak “Poo” Boonthakit, Thai actor and entertainer. K. Poo begins by explaining his unusual childhood: his father was a Thai diplomat and when Poo was a young boy his family moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where Poo would spend the next 11 years. Poo discusses life in Kenya among Africans and Indians and white ‘colonialists,' but also the incredible natural phenomena of the African savannah. However, in high school, Poo's family would move to New York, where he at first became more American but then later learned ‘how to be Thai' from the tight knit community of Thai expats in the city. Ed asks Poo about his history as an entertainer, and Poo explains that in Nairobi his brothers formed an acting troupe that performed on stage at school and in the city. In New York, Poo continued by becoming a singer and guitar player at local Thai restaurants. In the late 1990s, Poo returned to Thailand with his Filipino wife, and they started The Garage, one of the first American burger joints in Bangkok. Through a stroke of luck, their young son was cast in a commercial and Poo landed the role of the father (he was a natural at it). :) This led to a fascinating career acting in films, from “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio to “Brokedown Palace” with Claire Danes, up until the very recent “Thirteen Lives” directed by Ron Howard. Poo tells the story of his amazing three month shoot in Australia with the famous director and luminaries such as Viggo Mortenson and Colin Farrell. And The Garage is still going strong after twenty plus years! Poo invites all podcast listeners to join him for some American grub at the corner of Sukumvit 32 and Sukumvit Road. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 10, Thanksgiving III, which originally aired on November 26, 2013 and was written by Josh Malmuth and directed by Max Winkler. Here's a quick recap of the episode:After Coach makes Nick question his own masculinity, Nick forces the gang to go camping in the woods for Thanksgiving. They attempt to forage for their own food which lands Jess in an interesting predicament. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Hunt: Bonnie and Helen - When at the campsite, Winston shares the only “hunt” he likes are named Bonnie and Helen, referring to the actresses Bonnie Hunt and Helen Hunt.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Viggo Mortenson / Hidalgo - When commenting on his hat, Schmidt says it's “an exact replica of the hat Viggo Mortenson wore in the movie Hidalgo.” Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. is an American actor, writer, director, producer, musician, and multimedia artist who is best known for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of Rings trilogy. Mortensen starred as Frank Hopkins in the film Hidalgo, which is the story of an ex-army courier who travels to Arabia to compete with his horse, Hidalgo, in a dangerous desert race.We also further cover Schmidt and his hat as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For “Not in the 2020s” we briefly mention some ongoing racist and fatphobic themes but also talk more in depth about the way “men” are portrayed. We refer to this article where they discuss a different take on the way this episode handles the mens' masculinity. For our “Yes in the 2020s” we chat about how Coach let Schmidt feel he was a better camper for the first half of the episode. There were no guest stars in this episode. This episode we discuss the reference Schmidt made back to S1E14 (Bully), talk about the diseases that Jess supposedly had, and share a fun fact about the naming of the last episode. We did find the bear in the “bear hole” this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Eagle Scout - Coach reveals that he's actually good at camping because he was an Eagle Scout. An Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in Boy Scouts that only about 4% of Boy Scouts ever achieve.George Washington - Nick tries to get the loft excited about camping by saying that George Washington hunted cats rather than having a pet cat [like Winston]. Washington was the United States' first president and a Founding Father of the USA.This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Jess and Kelly rated this episode an 8/10 and her favorite character was Winston! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 11!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

After a failed attempt at getting him to watch the extended cuts of the movies two years ago, he fell asleep countless times and ultimately never finished the movies. Review of Greenbook starring Viggo Mortenson and Mahershala Ali.
On the 39th episode of Piecing It Together, Kris Krainock joins me for a second time in a row to discuss Green Book. The fantastic true story of Jazz pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his Italian driver (Viggo Mortenson) in the 1960s shines a light on a familiar story of racial tensions that's perfectly balanced by comedy-director Peter Farrely. Puzzle pieces include Driving Miss Daisy, The Blind Side, Little Miss Sunshine and A Bronx Tale.
Josh is joined by recurring guests Daniel Lima and Josh Brown to discuss two movies, Peter Farrelly's "Green Book" and Jason Reitman's "The Front Runner." First, they discuss "Green Book" and how it is limited by being a movie about race relations told solely by white people, how it does at depicting racism in the early 60s in spite of that and whether its performances from Viggo Mortenson and Mahershala Ali are enough to salvage the movie despite its other shortcomings. Then (at 42:00), they get into how "The Frontrunner" tells the story about the downfall of 1988 Democratic presidential hopeful Gary Hart while grappling with issues of media access, privacy, our relationship with our politicians, its litany of supporting performances from TV actors, and much more!

Welcome to The Stone Turntable!! This week our hosts run through an extensive “Trailer Trashed” where they watched the following trailers: Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Spiderman: Homecoming (2017), Justice League (2017) and It (2017). As usual, there is some small discussion about Paul Thomas Anderson, a Star Wars mention and duck feathers all over the studio. Our hosts also watched a film they usually wouldn't watch to “break out of their bubble”. Films included Captain Fantastic (2016) starring Viggo Mortenson, The Notebook (2004) with Ryan Gosling and Blair Witch (2016). Our hosts discuss many social themes found in Captain Fantastic, the direction (or many) of comic book-turned-movie franchises and even defend Michael Bay's work (kind of). Join us as we walk toward an unfamiliar territory of an episode where we dip into the Outer Rim of what is our comfort zone and take a walk on the wild side. (2016) - Comedy/Drama - 118 minutes - R Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Stars: Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Samantha Isler Writer/Director: Matt Ross Captain Fantastic sounds like the newest addition to the long list of superhero movies, and it the cover art looks like a Wes Anderson film. It is neither of those things. Join Chet and Rodney as they discuss this 2016 film that flew under the radar despite some award nominations. Also, the guys talk through “Child Actors” and how impressive that can be! This film is a story of a well-meaning father (Viggo Mortenson) who has extreme ideas of how his children should be raised. He has removed them from other people altogether and is educating them himself in the wilderness. As the kids are put through challenges both physical and mental, one can’t help but be impressed until circumstances demand that they all must go back into society where the children and their father are confronted by some harsh realities. This one makes you think! We would love to hear what those thoughts are! Please feel free to chime: www.downthehallpodcast.com What was your favorite scene? Who was your favorite character? What is your favorite performance by a child actor? Was Ben (the father) taking the correct approach in raising his kids?

Rafer and Kristen never could have imagined 1980s TV shows like "The Equalizer" being made into feature films. What's next? "Simon and Simon"? "Three's Company"? But they try their best to approach the new Denzel Washington film with open minds. Also up for review: "Boxtrolls," the new children's movie about small creatures trying to survive in a world that doesn't want them and "The Two Faces of January," a thriller starring Viggo Mortenson, Kirsten Dunst, and Oscar Isaac. Dan Pashman, host of The Sporkful, also makes an appearance on this week's podcast, seeking Movie Therapy for people who prefer movie and a dinner over dinner and a movie.
