Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. This week, get your BFFs together for a movie marathon focusing on Film Friendships. I've selected four films for the staff picks wall, highlighting my favorite best buds and friendships forged in fire. I also answer the age-old question, “Can men and women really be friends?” Let's dig in. Stand by Me (1986)First up is Rob Reiner's 1986 coming-of-age classic, Stand by Me. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Keifer Sutherland, Stand by Me is a classic focusing on the friendship between four boys growing up in the summer of 1959. Do you still have friends like you did when you were twelve? I hope so. Gather your besties on the couch for this one. Now and Then (1995)Next is the 1995 film Now and Then. I return to my twelve-year-old self whenever I watch this film, not just because I relate to the young leads of the film, but because of the deep and sincere friendship that is the film's through-line. Starring Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith, Gaby Hoffman, Demi Moore, Ashleigh Aston Moore, and Rita Wilson, these ladies deliver a powerful dramatic, and comedic performance. Get your best gals together for a great film with a great soundtrack. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)Yes, I know what you're thinking: a rom-com in a movie about friendship? You read that right. When Harry Met Sally… addresses the age-old question, “Can men and women be friends?” Well, I've got thoughts on the matter and you'll have to listen to this week's show to find out why I've selected this one for a podcast on film friendship. Thelma & Louise (1991)Closing out our staff picks wall this week is the 1991 drama/comedy/road movie Thelma & Louise. Starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, this Oscar-winning film about two best friends on the run from the law deals deeply with ideas of freedom, friendship, and letting go of others' expectations. Get your bestie to ride shotgun with you for this one. Buckle up. It's a bumpy ride. Thanks for joining us this week on the Video Store Podcast. This week we are experiencing some technical difficulties because Apple absolutely wrecked my audio set-up with an unnecessary OS update that doesn't seem to have made anything better. That's beside the point, but I did want to apologize off the hop. Anyway. The Hunt For The American James Bond continues both in our hearts and on the show, as we dip our toes into the chilly waters of Lake Jack Ryan one last time with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, Miguel Sandoval, Benjamin Bratt, Anne Archer, Thora Birch and James Earl Jones. Patriot Games set the bar pretty low, and this movie comfortably clears it. But it doesn't hit the heights of Hunt For Red October either, leaving us with a somewhat satisfying if not overly long political thriller about drug cartels and American intelligence. There's room to have fun there if you're willing to acknowledge how skeezy the CIA actually is, but perhaps we weren't there yet in '94. Other works discussed in this episode include Poor Things, The Holdovers, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and 24. Plus, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets renamed for streaming. This is the third ADHD-DVD film with a Steven Zaillian writing credit. The previous were Mission: Impossible and Gangs of New York. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, good luck! It is not available for streaming in Canada, but is rentable on YouTube. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a third consecutive Phillip Noyce movie, the admittedly very goofy Val Kilmer vehile The Saint (1997) that is also sadly not available for streaming in Canada. We'll be joined by gifted improviser (and J Mo's childhood friend) Mica Prazak to discuss whether it deserves to be added to the canon, or loaded into a cannon. Until then, see you at the movies!!
Ian chose the film that swept the 1999 Oscars. And try to take away your feelings about the lead actor. If you like this episode please leave a review.Support the show
This week as a schismatic sect is caught tunnelling underground in New York, we're dealing with a schismatic sect of the Irish variety, intent on burying themselves in pursuit killing of Jack Ryan. Yes, the hunt for the American James Bond continues with 1992's Patriot Games, directed by Phillip Noyce, and starring Harrison Ford, Sean Bean, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Patrick Bergin, Samuel L. Jackson, Polly Walker, James Earl Jones and Richard Harris. Yes Alec Baldwin has been turfed from the franchise, replaced by the man Paramount always wanted in the role from the start, and Ford does a great job of lending Jack gravity that Baldwin simply can't offer. Unfortunately, the movie around him only gets worse as it goes along, ending with a final reel that feels cut on from a different movie altogether. Meanwhile, Hayley's hyperfocused on the Golden Globes and the start of Awards Season, while Justin's getting deep into Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Other works discussed in this episode include Akeelah and the Bee, No Clue, Bottle Rocket, Foe, The Thing, Cape Fear, Spotlight, Prisoners and Zodiac among others. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to us talk about it, and this week we don't really recommend it, you can find it streaming on Paramount+ at the time of publication. We'll be back next week to wrap up our foray into the Tom Clancy-verse with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, as Harrison Ford becomes the only actor in the history of the franchise who got to play Jack Ryan twice on the big screen. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

It's Die Hard in the war on drugs! For this very special episode, Phil and Liam are joined by a VERY special guest: actor, writer, director, comic book author, renaissance man and podcasting superstar PAUL SCHEER! That's right, the effervescent host of top film podcasts Unspooled and How Do This Get Made? chartered a helicopter and flew in to join Phil and Liam for an intensive analysis of this mid--90s classic! The film's complex plot is thus: after a close friend is murdered by international drug traffickers, the vengeful US President (Donald Moffet) tacitly instructs his National Security team to launch a series of secret military strikes against the parties deemed responsible. Soon the new CIA deputy director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) discovers himself to be an unwitting pawn in a covert, illegal war between American paramilitary forces and the Colombian drug cartels. As the carnage escalates, Ryan must find a way to quell the bloodshed and expose the corruption at the heart of his own government. CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is the third entry in the Jack Ryan film franchise that started with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. That particular movie was of course directed by DIE HARD helmer John McTiernan, meaning that there is plenty of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in the mix here…but does this motion picture also share some key similarities with Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER? The guys assess its influences and its legacy, while also wrestling with another burning question: is this the ultimate ‘Dad movie'? Paul talks passionately about his deep and long-standing connection with DIE HARD and his youthful love for all things Bruce Willis, and the guys go deep on the film's eclectic creative contributors, that includes personalities such as Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce, John Milius and Steven Zaillian. They also discuss the virtues of an outstanding ensemble cast that features the likes of Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Raymond Cruz, Benjamin Bratt and Miguel Sandoval. Paul even discusses the part he'd most love to play! The stacked cast makes for a particularly entertaining edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a tantalizing trivia quiz provides some stimulating brain-teasers…along with a warm and fuzzy moment or two. This highly entertaining episode is not to be missed - how DARE YOU not listen to it?! CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuYb6ZNQaZoAt the time of release, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is streaming on Paramount + and is available to rent of buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox, Direct TV, AMC and all the usual platforms.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Spooky Threequel Month continues as Will and Sam dare to f*ck with the Chuck by watching Child's Play 3, the unfortunate low point in the otherwise surprisingly consistent, long-running, never retconned Child's Play/Chucky franchise. While following cinema's greatest killer doll on yet another rampage, the boys discuss the 90s trope of military schools, sing the praises of Brad Dourif, and Will repeatedly confuses Mena Suvari and Thora Birch (neither of whom are in this movie). Next year, Paramount Pictures is going to try and turn Dungeons and Dragons into the next huge fantasy franchise. Indeed, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has it all - a huge budget, a cast of stars (including Chris Pine) and people behind the scenes who take it seriously. It's a far cry from the first, disastrous attempt to turn the famous RPG game into a franchise, 2000's mostly forgotten Dungeons & Dragons, which starred a scenery-chewing Jeremy Irons as an evil mage. The cast mainly consisted of young actors, including Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans and Thora Birch. Produced by New Line Cinema, it was very much in the vein of their Mortal Kombat movies, and fans of the iconic game, who were legion, were not impressed. The film only grossed a measly $33 million, and the only follow-up it spawned was a made-for-TV sequel forgotten by time.So what went wrong? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into the RPG's origins, the hype surrounding it, and the choice of Courtney Solomon to direct what everyone, I assumed, hoped would launch a franchise. We also look back at how this was a different time for fantasy films, with New Line's own Lord of the Rings trilogy (which began only a year after this came out) showing everyone how lucrative a movie based on a fantasy property could be - if done right. This was definitively NOT done right. This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written and narrated by Dave Davis, edited by Paul Podeyn and produced by Ben Cantler. Is Dungeons and Dragons the movie as bad as we remember? Let us know in the comments!

Directed by Terrt Zwigoff, Ghost World is the black comedy film based in the 1993-1997 comic book of the same name by Daniel Clowes. Luke and Jae traverse the 2001 world of teenage outsiders in this movie starring Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Renfro, Illeana Douglas and Steve Buscemi. Neo-cool Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), faced with graduation from high school, take a hard look at the world they wryly observe and decide what they really want. When Enid takes an interest in the offbeat Seymour (Steve Buscemi) and Rebecca focuses her attention on their mutual romantic fixation Josh (Brad Renfro), the girls' friendship is forever changed.
Katie and Bridget make a pact, resurrect a dead kid, fall in a sewer drain, have a baby, and drive a limo as they re-watch the movie: Now and Then! It's a movie all about friendship, growing up, and understanding that if you make a pact with your friends when you're 12 you HAVE TO follow it years and years later! Come along as we meet Roberta, a girl who we believe should have had a coming out story instead of a coming of age one; Sam, a girl who actually may or may not be Katie; Teeny, a girl who magically found a way to stuff pudding in a balloon; and Crissy, a girl who really needs a proper sex ed conversation - preferably from Ms. Rachael. These four best friends spend a wacky summer together going through honestly some crazy shit, just to reunite once again in their adulthood to watch Crissy give birth - literally! Delivered by Rosie O'Donnell! LITERALLY! Released in 1995, it stars some heavy hitters including: Christina Ricci, Demi Moore, Rosie O'Donnell, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith, Gaby Hoffmann, Rita Wilson, Devon Sawa, and Ashleigh Aston Moore (RIP).
Today the girls cover one of Drusilla's favorites, 1962's Carnival of Souls. From wiki: “Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American psychological horror film[3] produced and directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford[1] from a story by Clifford and Harvey, and starring Candace Hilligoss. Its plot follows Mary Henry, a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. She relocates to a new city, where she finds herself unable to assimilate with the locals and becomes drawn to the pavilion of an abandoned carnival. Director Harvey also appears in the film as a ghoulish stranger who stalks her throughout.[4] The film is set to an organ score by Gene Moore. “ But first! It's Die Hard in a political thriller! This time Phil and Liam dig into the IRA-themed action movie PATRIOT GAMES (1992), the Jack Ryan sequel that Die Hard director John McTiernan was originally supposed to make with Alec Baldwin in the lead role. But fate – and Harrison Ford – had other ideas! While this expansive, globe-trotting political thriller may not bare much resemblance to Die Hard on face value, there's still a surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA' for the boys to examine with their movie microscopes. This pulsating Paramount picture is also notable for being one of the first mainstream Hollywood action movies to tackle complex and contemporaneous political events: the troubles in Ireland. It's a particularly important episode for Liam, who has a deep and long-standing connection to this movie and its iconic leading man, Harrison Ford - whose acting style and body of work is discussed in significant detail. The film's stellar supporting cast - that includes such luminaries as Anne Archer, Sean Bean, Thora Birch, Samuel L. Jackson and James Earl Jones - also gives the guys plenty to chew over, along with the dense literary source material, i.e. Tom Clancy's 1987 novel of the same name. But despite the heavy subject matter, there's still plenty of opportunity for games of a more light-hearted nature. As always, the show culminates with the ‘Die Hard Oscars' and the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz, which now also features the ever-popular ‘Convoluted Corner'! PATRIOT GAMES TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq26pM6Om-A At the time of release, PATRIOT GAMES is streaming for free on Paramount + and through Amazon Prime Video, MGM +, Showtime, Fubo and the History Channel vault. It is also available to rent or buy through Apple TV, iTunes, YouTube, RedBox, Vudu, DirectTV and all the usual platforms. DIE HARD ON A BLANK is created, written, and hosted by Philip Gawthorne. It's a Mia Goth extravaganza! With so much Mia Goth going around, the boys dedicate a whole episode to her. 3 Films including X, Pearl and Infinity Pool. Also! Tom has an epiphany when he realizes he loves "paycheck movies". Bill Murray gets handsy. More time is dedicated to Jenny Ortega's agent than on any other podcast. Bella Thorne becomes Thora Birch. Tom unleashes his wrath on Tom Hanks. Tons of Ti West discussion. And because Tom is a gay man, the conversation descends into Cher, Meryl Streep and Sally Field. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tohellwiththispodcast/support
A new Dungeons and Dragons movie arrives in theatres this month, so we thought we'd take a look back at the very first attempt to bring the beloved role-playing phenomenon to the screen. As two first-level novices, Dan and Conrad needed an expert Dungeon Master to guide them through this early 2000s CGI-fest, so the sage-like Michael French of RetroBlasting joins them. At least, he does until his Internet took pity and set him free from the spectacle of PlayStation 1 cut-screen establishing shots, Jeremy Irons devouring the scenery and spitting it venomously back out, and evil henchmen in frosty blue lipstick. The fantasy extravaganza directed by first-time helmer Courtney Solomon, featuring Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch, Zoe McLellan and Kristen Wilson is a much-maligned box office disaster, but is it a powerful gem just waiting to be rediscovered? Actress and comedian Alana Johnston (Self Esteem Party) joins to discuss the 1995 coming-of-age drama NOW AND THEN starring Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann and Ashleigh Aston Moore. Director Lesli Linka Glatter helmed this period piece about four adolescent friends growing up in a small Indiana town in 1970, bookended by scenes of the same quartet in adulthood played by Rosie O'Donnell, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore, and Rita Wilson. NOW AND THEN came and went upon release in 1995, but decades worth of slumber party viewings had bolstered the film's cult reputation as a rare cinematic bildungsroman to focus on female characters. With the always-hilarious Johnston, we delve into this '90s staple along with diversions into Casper, Canadian television, Euphoria, Romeo + Juliet and much, much more!

It's time for another staple in the cinematic year of 1999. A year that will go down in history as releasing some of the most culturally relevant films of the modern age. For this episode we're talking American Beauty by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball.
