“Don't lie to the person in the mirror.” Darren McCarty  Denise talks to Darren McCarty, former NHL star for the Detroit Red Wings. In addition to being proud to have been a part of the team to win four Stanley Cups, he's also proud to be six years sober and of all his charity work. He co-founded Operation Valhalla to support U.S. Veterans and their families.  What are some of his secrets to facing adversity and maintaining his confidence? Number one, never quit. As Babe Ruth once said, “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.”  His experience as a professional athlete also taught him the importance of having a strong work ethic. He considers his Red Wings teammates as brothers—the entire organization his extended family. Because he always felt taken care of, he takes nothing for granted. In fact, he's fortunate to be alive to be able to give back. His struggle with addiction taught him the importance of loving yourself.   Darren realized he could lie to everyone else, but when he faced life or death, he knew he could no longer lie to the man in the mirror. Now, through faith in something greater than himself, his family and friends, and journaling (you heard it right!) he continues to enjoy life and inspire others.  ***  Born in Canada, Darren McCarty is a former professional hockey player and four-time Stanley Cup winner in the American National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings. He is best known as the team's enforcer, and a key member of the infamous “Grind Line.” In 2013 he authored a book about his life on the ice and has his own comic book and graphic novels by Mess Bucket Comics. He hosts a daily show on the Woodward Sports Network, hosts the Darren McCarty Show on Friday nights on WJR radio and has developed his own line of cannabis products. He co-founded Operation Valhalla, a non-profit that provides financial assistance to veterans and their families. McCarty has four children and lives with his wife Sheryl in Clawson, Michigan.  His book, My Last Fight: The True Story of a Hockey Rock Star, is available wherever books are sold.  You can find Operation Valhalla – Veteran Support Charity on Facebook.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

Our third episode from the new studio is in the rear view mirror, and it marked the return of two very important things: beer from Falling Down Beer Company and the cheesy hotel front desk bell, both of which we've missed terribly. Joined by our guests from Social Coop Media, Long Neck Strangler and Mess Bucket Comics, we covered a whole gamut of topics for your listening pleasure... We originally had a couple of other guests scheduled for tonight's broadcast, but whacky mayhem ensued and so we drafted some folks into hanging out with us to keep the conversation flowing. A few hacks highlighted the early conversation - Starbucks has a problem with their gift cards, Adult Friend Finder got themselves breached and millions of rather sensitive and potentially embarrassing user details are out in the wild and already being used to blackmail people, some rather unpleasant items from the worlds of Twitter and Google Maps when it comes to overt racism, the return of Clearly Canadian, a few more items that make us feel all too old as Empire Strikes Back turns 35 and Real Genius turns 30, and a really miserable chain of events at a 16th birthday party.  All that and more got covered during our first segment. In segment two, we dove in with Billy Strawter of Social Coop Media.  In his first appearance at the new studio, we chatted through cringe-worthy social media fails, a new client that they've recently landed, some basics for a company or an individual looking to maximize their social media capabilities and more.  It's always a great chat when we have Billy in, and this time was no exception.  Check them out at http://socialcoopmedia.com/ For our third segment, we dove in with Kevin from Long Neck Strangler and Dom from Mess Bucket Comics to talk about all sorts of topics - Kevin's take on the local music scene, some great tours he's been a part of, some cautionary tales he's witnessed along the way, and some more catching up with Dom from Motor City Comic Con, running a comic business, and how social media plays and interacts with their various endeavors and operations. As always, our final segment recapped some of our earlier topics, covered a few things that we missed in the opening segment, and wrapped things up with our guests for the night. Episode 92, our second broadcast from the new studio, is live and ready to make you laugh at our exhaustion and ridiculousness.  We were joined by our friends from Motor City Geek and Mess Bucket Comics to talk about our collective experiences at Motor City Comic Con this past weekend and more. So listen in as we kick off with our 1992 flavored intro and get rolling... Joined by Austin and Rob from Motor City Geek, Dom from Mess Bucket Comics and our new regular Nuri, we settled in and got rolling. From AOL getting bought to the FTC stepping in on Radio Shack's proposal to sell their customer data during their bankruptcy proceedings, there were quite a few events and articles that caught our eyes this past week.  We also talking about our upcoming event tomorrow (Thursday) night at Blackfinn, some minor details about the weekend's activities and more. Our second segment dove right into Motor City Comic Con head on with our friends from Motor City Geek.  The artists, the media guests, the after parties...oh my, the after parties...we definitely had a lot to talk about. If you're not familiar with Motor City Geek, you should be.  They're deeply engaged in trying to bring to the surface just about any facet of being a geek you can think of.  From comics to cosplay, from LAN parties to LARPing, they've got something about for you.  Check them out at http://motorcitygeek.com/ Segment three dove in with Dom from Mess Bucket Comics, who's been a guest on our show before and we always have a great time with...including at some of those aforementioned after parties. Dom's got a couple of graphic novels out currently, with the third on the way, and he's also involved in an annual charity hockey event that does some really cool stuff for a local cause in Detroit.  Check him out at http://messbucketcomics.com/index2.html Our fourth segment included a live, on-air taste test of...shudder...vegan jerky (we don't understand how that works either), as well as doubling back on some earlier topics and just wrapping things up for the night. IT In The D – Episode 51: Public Relations, Graphic Novels and Makers

IT in the D

IT in the D, Episode 51. Another week, another great episode out into the ether. From our opening banter about the usual rounds of chaos to talking managing clients, damage control and all about the world of Public Relations with CKC Agency, then into the world of comic books, graphic novels, charity events and more with the creator of Mess Bucket Comics and finally out into the some might say crazy realm of makers, fighting robots, flames and cannons with one of our friends from i3Detroit...such a wide variety of topics and great content. Our first segment, as per usual, was a round up of news and stories that have caught our eye during the past week.  The 45th anniversary of the moon landing, Revenge of the Nerds turns 30 years old, the movie Ender's Game, a device you can build for $35 that will take over any Chromecast enabled system, and all sorts of other fun. For our second segment, we dove in with Carolyn Krieger-Cohen, the owner of CKC Agency, a Public Relations firm in Farmington Hills.  From trying to figure out what she was going to do after graduating from MSU to running her own agency, she has a lot of great insights to share.  We chatted about what Public Relations actually is, what PR firms really do, the evolution of PR with the rise of social media, advice for those thinking about getting into the field and tons more. Segment three's conversation focused on Dom Riggio from Mess Bucket Comics...and a whole lot of other things, as it turns out.  His stories feature that fun guy over there to the right, and the first two books are out with a third on the way.  But that's not all he's doing, because he also owns and runs Penelope's Venue in Southgate, a charitable organization that gets kids on the ice on an ice rink that somehow none of us even knew existed.  And that just scratches the surface of everything he's got going on, so listen in and check out his various endeavors. Our fourth and final segment pulled in Matt Switlik from i3Detroit to talk about makers, making things, all of the fun tools and toys at i3Detroit to this weekend's Maker Faire Detroit event.  If you're not familiar with what a "maker" is, what "maker spaces" are, or all of the fun stuff you can see going on at Henry Ford this weekend, then this is definitely the segment for you.  His particular area of interest in creating fighting robots - the hardware, the software, and everything about them - but there's a whole world of cool stuff waiting for you inside i3Detroit whenever you stop by and at Maker Faire this weekend. And that brings us to the end of another fun episode of IT in The D that could have gone on for another hour or two if we didn't have jobs and lives to deal with...sigh... So listen in, and check out the links below to check out everything our guests have going on.
