Den stærke og aktuelle rolleliste tæller D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner), Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Joseph Quinn (Gladiator 2), Charles Melton (Riverdale) og Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before).

Spoiler Alert: This episode contains numerous plot spoilers for Civil War.On today's show, we inaugurate a new episode series called reel:verb, in which we rate, review, and analyze a recent movie from the perspective of politics, culture, and language in action. In the first installment, Alex, Olivia, and Calvin tackle the 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation). Civil War depicts a near-future US torn apart by domestic warfare, as seen from the perspectives of a small group of journalists (played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, respectively) who are documenting the fighting and plotting to photograph and interview the besieged US president (Nick Offerman). We begin by providing our individual ratings of the film (out of 5 verbs), and then we recap the major plot points and set pieces that take place along Dunst et. al's roadtrip from hell. We conclude with a wide-ranging analysis of the film's politics and rhetoric, in which we unpack how it depicts journalism (and journalists) and consider its social significance in the midst of ongoing US-backed conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world. Ultimately, we argue, this film's vision of civil war is too far-fetched, abstracted, and underdeveloped to serve as a true cautionary tale for US audiences – perhaps because Garland, like his cast of photojournalists, is apparently more invested in aestheticizing violence than cogently critiquing it.

Indie distributor A24 started memorably, if modestly, back in 2012 and 2013, with titles like Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring." Within the next couple of years, they'd launched the directing careers of Alex Garland ("Ex Machina") and Robert Eggers ("The Witch"). Then in 2016, they went ahead and - very memorably - won the Oscar for Best Picture with Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight." And they haven't slowed down since. David Lowery's "A Ghost Story," Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird," Sean Baker's "The Florida Project," and Ari Aster's "Hereditary" are just a fraction of the acclaimed titles released by the company in its first ten years. To celebrate the occasion, Adam and Josh hold the debut Filmspotting Draft: ten A24 titles each, no shared picks, no trades, no fighting. Listen and then cast a vote for who built the better roster. This film had the misfortune of being dumped by its studio at the time of release AND coming out the week after Black Panther but make no mistake, this is one of THE most impressive science fiction horror films of recent years.  It was directed by genre master Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Oscar Isaac.  It all revolves around the expedition of four scientists into a mysterious area of Florida swampland now occupied by alien life known as “The Shimmer” and what transpires there is not for the squeamish! Host: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/#livingforthecinema #moviereviews #annihilation #AlexGarland #NataliePortman #JenniferJasonLeigh #OscarIsaac #TessaThompson #GinaRodriguez #TuvaNovotny #BenedictWong

This time around, we discuss the 2012 action cult hit, Dredd. It's the directorial debut for now notable director, Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs), and what a debut it is. It's corny, it's violent, it's style is unapologetic and confident, and above all else, it's use of slow-mo might be the most appropriate implementation in any movie ever. It's one of Brandon's favorite action movies, so he couldn't help but prattle on about it for a while. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

"This is a story about a robot who becomes a girl" - Alex Garland “Ex Machina”, released in 2014 by Universal and Film 4, shot in Norway and at Pinewood Studios in London, is a sci fi thriller set “10 minutes from now”, written and directed by Alex Garland (who you also wrote 28 days later, sunshine, Dredd and more recently wrote and directed “annihilation”). We follow Caleb, a young lonely coder who wins a week at his employer's secretive estate. We find that Caleb is not there for a contest, but to be a test administrator for Nathan's robot AI, a lovely faced automaton named Ava. Caleb quickly falls for her, and what results is a beautiful metaphor for mans inability to control his own machine. “AI is a serious thing and I don't think people have really caught up to it...Tesla is working on Neuralink” -George “I can definitely see any of our top 5 evil tech billionaires living in that house.” - Nick

Earn does whatever he can to try to get Alfred's career to the next level. Darius, the rapper's right-hand man and visionary, is also in Alfred's entourage. With the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honour their background while preparing them to embrace the future.Cable’s Finest: InsecureModern-day black women might be described as strong and confident; in other words, just the opposite of Issa and Molly. As the best friends deal with their own real-life flaws, their insecurities come to the fore as together they cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), the comedy series looks at the friendship of two black women in a unique, authentic way. It features the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.True Detective (S3)Season 3 of "True Detective" plays out in three separate time periods, telling the story of the 1980 disappearance of a young Arkansas boy and his sister, and a mystery that deepens over decades. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali stars as state police detective Wayne Hays, who recalls the days and weeks immediately following the crime, as well as developments in 1990, when he and his former partner, Roland West, were subpoenaed after a major break in the case. What started as a routine investigation becomes a long journey to dissect and make sense of the crime.Gen Z’s Take: Grown-ish The Johnson family's eldest daughter is taking her first steps into the real world as she heads off to college. "Grown-ish" explores the first trappings of adulthood, and Zoey must navigate through the trials and tribulations of these momentous steps. Without further damaging his family, he must decide which of his three sons will take over. His favorite, young Hakeem, is a gifted musician but values fame over hard work. Middle son, Jamal, is talented and shy but gay -- embarrassing to Lyon. The oldest, Andre, is business-minded but lacks charisma. The reappearance of Cookie, his ex-wife, complicates things; she says he owes her for taking the fall for the drug-running that financed his early career.Scandal"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind this ABC drama. Olivia Pope, a former media consultant to the president, is ready to move on with her life and opens her own crisis-management firm, but she can't seem to shake ties with her past. Olivia's staff includes Quinn Perkins, who has a complicated history, and hacker extraordinaire Huck. As she moves forward it becomes clear that, while her staffers may specialize in cleaning up the lives of other people, they can't seem to do the same for themselves. The Reboot: She’s Gotta Have ItBeautiful Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) can't decide what kind of man she wants to date, so she decides to date three at the same time. This was an interesting week for us at NBBR. We were split on last week's episode on The Guest (2014), and we are split on this episode on Annihilation (2018).  This mystery / science fiction movie from director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) is Aaron's favorite movie of the year so far; Matt McNeal hates it. Listen to our discussion and let us know which side you fall on!

Hey there film fans after a brief hiatus we're back! Again! This week on the show is a little different without our cohort Wade to guide us through the ever changing landscape that is podcast land, but never fear we will persevere! Ok enough with the rhyming crap... This time we have our special guest Jeremiah hanging out with us to help round out our cavalcade of shenanigans as it were, so after our quick catch up and the news we get down to our weekly movie review of 2018's Annihilation. Annihilation is a visually stunning science fiction film from the mind of director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) starring Natalie Portman and Oscar Issac. This is a thinking man's SciFi flick for sure, one steeped in heavy handed philosophy (especially to Jeremiah's dismay) but we'll talk about that in the review. The beautiful imagery alone is worth the price of admission, with that being said there are some jarring and disturbing horror moments strewn throughout the film that'll definitely shake those of you with a weaker constitution. The actors do a great job with this material but it's not a dialogue heavy adventure, it takes a less is more approach for sure. One of the high points is noticing the reactions to the situations that the team of scientists encounter in "The Shimmer" where you actually see the psychological toll it starts to take on every character. This movie oozes style and tone by the bucket load so if that's your thing you're in for a real treat. So kick back and have a listen while the Bros. wax poetic about this intriguing flick (JK) and maybe if you haven't already decide to give this film a looksee. Just don't say we didn't warn you about the shimmer...

Beauty and the Bitch has taken a step into the wild, deep darkness of Jeff van der Meer's Southern Reach Trilogy. This interesting, and twisted trilogy has received the Hollywood treatment with *amazing* director Alex Garland (Ex Machina), who co-wrote and directed Annihilation.   Naturally, we have feelings about how the adaptation has shaped up (and changed in a number of drastic ways) and what we think that might mean. Revel in our feelings, effortlessly thrown shade and shared love for Alex Garland, sci-fi (in general) and drama. PLUS: miscellaneous ramblings (obviously our forte).   Be sure to catch Annihilation while it's still in U.S. theaters and watch it on Netflix soon if you are international!   PLUGS: Morgan (& Mic) think you should check out Grace & Frankie (in case you've been living under a rock and have *seriously* missed out.   Mic also wants to plug robots. Just generally (He is REALLY sucking up to them, so *when they take over they remember he is an ally and a loyalist).   ***Note: they will be taking over.*** Mic also wants you to check out The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, an extremely readable (and extremely short) science fiction trilogy. The second and third books are coming out this summer!      FOLLOW: Follow Morgan (@MorganizedMess and the podcast (@BandBcast) on Instagram! Ex Machina, a new film that tells the story of a billionaire programmer who creates an artificially intelligent female robot, is in theaters now, and its writer and director, Alex Garland, is our special guest on Point of Inquiry this week. Although this is Garland's debut as a director he has also written hit novels such as The Beach as well as written and produced screen plays such as 28 Days Later.   As the power of computers and the software that runs them rapidly advances year by year, the representation of artificial intelligence in sci-fi films like Ex Machina are inching closer and closer to reality. Josh Zepps talks to Garland about the science and philosophy behind consciousness, the future of self-aware machines, and the ethical considerations we’ve barely begun to ponder.
