This week on Play Comics, we're trading our Roman shields for DualShock controllers as we dive headfirst into the digital disaster that is Asterix & Obelix Kick Buttix for PS2 and Xbox – because apparently someone at Étranges Libellules thought the best way to honor René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's beloved comic masterpiece was to trap our favorite mustachioed warriors in a 3D brawler with combat mechanics more repetitive than Obelix's “These Romans are crazy!” catchphrase. Released in 2003 as Asterix & Obelix XXL in Europe before getting the wonderfully ridiculous “Kick Buttix” rebrand for American audiences, this licensed adventure promised players the chance to experience authentic Gallic village life while punching approximately 70 Romans per level across 40 different stages of cartoon chaos. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so mindlessly button-mashy that even Caesar would file a complaint with customer service about the repetitive gameplay loop. Joining us for this Roman-bashing bonanza is the incomparable Chas! Pangburn – a man who when he's not busy lettering the actual Asterix comics from the depths of his creative dungeon, brings his insider knowledge of what makes these characters tick both on the page and in polygonal form. His expertise in both the source material and the art of comic creation makes him the perfect guide through this particular journey from panel to PlayStation. So grab your magic potion and prepare for an episode that's more entertaining than actually grinding through the same three enemy types for hours on end – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar at Vercingétorix levels. Es gibt immer mal wieder internationale Comic-Reihen, an denen hat der deutsche Leser einen besonderen Narren gefressen. Asterix natürlich. Die Simpsons. Und ebenfalls eine Zeit lang in jedem Jugendzimmer zu finden: Clever & Smart. Die beiden Agenten waren zwar nie so erfolgreich wie der Gallier, aber zumindest einen der alten Condor-Bände hatte wohl jeder Comic-affine Leser mal in der Hand. Oder man kennt sie als Flip & Flap aus den Felix-Heftchen. Vielleicht hat man auch die Trickserie gesehen, synchronisiert von niemand geringerem als™ Karl Dall und Wolfgang Völz. Die Veröffentlichungsgeschichte der Reihe in Deutschland ist nicht minder chaotisch wie ihre Protagonisten, aber möglicherweise können wir etwas Einblick gewähren und nebenbei auch noch checken, ob der ganze Nonsens heute überhaupt noch lesbar ist. De derde woensdag in mei is Verantwoordingsdag. President Pieter Duisenberg van de Algemene Rekenkamer presenteert dan zijn onderzoek naar het regeringsbeleid van het afgelopen jaar. "Ja, dat is dus ook de dag van de belastingbetalers, omdat die dan inzicht krijgen wat ministers doen met hun geld”, zegt hij. In gesprek met Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger kraakt hij een reeks harde noten. Veel gaat naar behoren, de financiën en hun beheer zijn snel hersteld van de klappen uit de coronajaren. Stel duidelijke doelen. Beloof niet wat je niet aankunt. Wees duidelijk en eerlijk over de resultaten.Duisenberg noemt het regeerprogramma van het kabinet-Schoof wat betreft zulke beginselen van goed bestuur ‘teleurstellend'. Doelen, resultaten en instrumenten zijn vaag of ontbreken soms geheel. Zo zijn de ramingen voor het beleid van Asiel en Migratie al zo'n twintig jaar een rommelpot. Voortdurend moet met noodmaatregelen bijgesprongen worden en dat is erg duur, inefficiënt en zet mensen soms letterlijk in de kou. Als het kabinet dit terrein zo belangrijk acht, zou juist hier realistisch ramen en plannen voorop moeten staan. Ook de enorme bezuiniging van 22% op de uitgaven voor rijksambtenaren is wel erg ondoorzichtig. Duisenberg constateert dat het aantal ambtenaren alleen maar stijgt, ook de inhuur van externen, en dat een fundamentele aanpak alleen lukt als overheidstaken veel eenvoudiger ingericht worden. "Begin dan meteen met de WIA." Hiermee dreigen miljarden aan gaten in de kabinetsplannen. "Dat zijn uitgestelde teleurstellingen die je nu al ziet aankomen. Dan moet je bijsturen en corrigeren." Zo stelt het kabinet dat Nederland ‘de top van de mobiliteit wil zijn'. Duisenberg: "Wat is dat, de top? Als je dat niet concreet maakt en de plannen niet kunt financieren, is dat geen serieus beleidsdoel." Zeker niet als tegelijkertijd bruggen op instorten staan. Bovendien blijven zaken liggen die juist veel kunnen opleveren. Het saneren van ondoelmatige fiscale regelingen kan 30 miljard euro besparen. "Stoppen tenzij. Dat is dan de stelregel voor effectief beleid." Duisenberg stelt vast dat het kabinet hier aanvankelijk slechts 250 miljoen wilde besparen en inmiddels nog minder. “Dat schiet niet op.”Bij Defensie zijn de uitdagingen enorm. "Kwetsbaar" zegt Duisenberg eufemistisch. Niet alleen blijkt de beveiliging er nog steeds volstrekt niet op orde - zelfs bij de cruciale kabels voor cyberverkeer - ook blijft veel op de plank liggen of onuitgevoerd. De aangekondigde expansie van uitgaven roept vooral kopzorgen op. Duisenberg maant dat men hier ‘écht realistisch ramen moet'; ook met de NAVO-partners samen zodat niet ieder land voor zich maar aanrommelt. Beloven wat je helemaal niet aan kunt, is - zeker hier - funest. En dan blijkt ook nog dat Nederland de afspraak om 2 procent van het bnp aan defensie te besteden alleen op papier blijkt te halen. De Rekenkamer ontdekte verschil tussen de veel te positieve raming bij Financiën vergeleken met het behaalde resultaat op Defensie. Dit wegmoffelen wekt weinig vertrouwen in aanloop naar de NAVO-top in Den Haag. Geen wonder dat de Rekenkamer in NAVO en in EU-verband nadrukkelijk actief wordt. Duisenberg vertelt over een alliantie met de Duitsers, Tsjechen en Slovenen om verantwoording van defensie-uitgaven beter te borgen.Ook vertelt hij over een fors conflict met minister Eelco Heinen (Financiën) over hoe Nederland zijn nationale balans formuleert en daar toezicht op houdt. Nederland is hier 'een Asterix-dorpje' in Europa.Juist omdat na de bankencrisis, de coronacrisis en de energiecrisis de situatie weer meer op orde is gekomen, is de Rekenkamer streng. Ook naar de Tweede Kamer. Zij moet haar budgetrecht actiever hanteren, bijvoorbeeld door de speciale controle-aanpak bij 'grote projecten' veel vaker en stevig in te zetten. Tak, wiemy — wyglądali jak Flip i Flap, Asterix i Obelix, tudzież jak Kajko i Kokosz. Zdjęcia nieprzesadnie postawnego Jarosława Kaczyńskiego u boku zwalistego Romana Giertycha kłócących się na sejmowej trybunie to najbardziej efektowne obrazki mijającego tygodnia w polskiej polityce. Ale politycznie ważniejsze były inne wydarzenia. Kaczyński właśnie dał sygnał do ataków na Konfederację — mimo że do tej pory unikał konfrontacji ze swym mniejszym prawicowym konkurentem, zakładając, że będzie potrzebować wyborców Sławomira Mentzena, by w drugiej turze wyborów prezydenckich pokonać Rafała Trzaskowskiego. Ta nagła zmiana to dowód na to, że Kaczyński wciąż obawia się, iż jego prezydencki kandydat Karol Nawrocki może przegrać już w pierwszej turze z Mentzenem — wówczas to lider Konfederacji będzie się potykał w finale z Rafałem Trzaskowskim (który — swoją drogą — coraz wyraźniej dystansuje się od Donalda Tuska). Kaczyński wykorzystał do ataku na „Konfę” kontrowersyjne słowa Mentzena o płatnej edukacji oraz służbie zdrowia. Podlał to sosem swych spiskowych teorii, wedle których konfederaci mogliby współpracować z Tuskiem — co ma dodatkowo zniechęcić elektorat prawicy do głosowania na Mentzena. A jeśli chodzi o wspomniany sejmowy atak Kaczyńskiego na Giertycha — którego finałem było skandowanie przez posłów PiS oskarżenia „morderca” — to twórcy „Stanu Wyjątkowego” mają dowód na to, że prezes PiS wszystko starannie i na chłodno zaplanował.

On one side was The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea and on the other side was the show we're talking about today: The Histories of Pliny the Elder, Spike Milligan's attempt to pen a sword-and-sandals Goonish epic.It has become one the most beloved Goon Shows ever, with some highly memorable gags and an end-of-term looseness about it. They all sounded like they were just having a lot of fun. Joining Tyler is returning guest James Page and as well as discussing the show itself pay tribute to a couple of the backroom boys, examine the difference between Cyril and Lew and give mention to Mark Kermode, Terry Scott and the Asterix books.
Watching, reading, and listening to things a second, third or even a million times can offer you a whole new experience. Why do we pick up the same thing to enjoy again? It could be nostalgia, it could be the need for comfort in the familiar, maybe it's research, or maybe you're rewatching the early episodes of a series so you can get more enjoyment out of new, later episodes that you haven't seen before? Whatever the reason it can be an interesting experience, especially when you notice a whole bunch of things you never thought about before! You can see it through new eyes. And because you know how things ended up you can focus more on details, aesthetics, and character development rather than mainly on the plot. Since I've got lots of streaming services now I'm rewatching heaps of faves. I haven't seen the later seasons of Archer so I'm rewatching that at the moment. It's my 3rd time on these early episodes and I'm noticing new things as well as seeing things in a new light. I noticed Jessica Walter (Mallory Archer), Jeffrey Tambor (Len Trexlor), Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt), were all in Arrested Development together. I had previously believed that Archer was an irredeemable arsehole from the get-go, and all the other characters were basically good but became arseholes as a reaction to Archer, but a rewatch shows that they were always ALL aresholes exactly as bad as him! I'm also shocked by how brutal and violent the show is and how often they don't even fully resole endings. When you revisit things often they're not how you remember them. Usually that's just because your memory is faulty and you have an interesting experience seeing something how it REALLY is. But it's awful when things actually HAVE changed; an old fave that's been retconned and edited... witness the stupid stormtroopers riding badly animated dinosaurs in Starwars! In comics like Asterix you can drink in the art and the historical and political references, find yourself noticing little side stories in panels and all sorts of character relationships going on. What are your fave things to revisit? And why do you do it? Or maybe you never revisit things? Parody and satire are a certain kind of humour. They're VERY easy to do because you just base them off real, already existing things, then you twist it a bit to add humour and make it ridiculous. But that's where it gets tricky! Satire is a parody of a real situation rather than fictional, it tends to have a harder edge. Where it usually goes wrong is that people mistake it for something straight, i.e. NOT satire, not comedy, not exaggeration or ridicule. The two main approaches to parody are a broad satire of a genre, like Princess Bride on fairytale fantasy, or a more targeted approach like Spaceballs which satirised Star Wars, and things in between like Airplane, which made fun of the film Zero Hour but also used it as a chance to parody the disaster movie genre and include a shotgun approach to pop-cultural jokes, making fun of everything happening in the 1970s. When I was growing up Mad Magazine movie parody comics were always a fave of mine, I'd prefer them to the actual movies they made fun off. The art was amazing with great caricatures and the humour was always very cheeky. Asterix was another comic series I enjoyed, which involved a lot of historical satirical humour. One big issue with that kind of targeted humour though is that it's often very dependent on its references for the jokes to fully work, so if you lack familiarity with them it won't bite as hard or sometimes not at all. The trick is to include enough of the context for context dependant jokes so that they can work regardless. If you do your job well enough people will not even remember the original and your satire or parody will completely stand on its own! In our Quackcast we even covered things that become self parodies like the Deadpool Marvel Movies, some of the Roger More James Bond films, the late horror franchise films like Nightmare on Elm street, Friday the 13th and so on. What are some of your fave parodies or satires? I think Princess Bride, the Life of Brian, Blazing Saddles, and Spaceballs are real standouts. But things like Lego Batman, Not Another Teen Movie, and even The Toxic Avenger have their own place. On that last one: Lloyd Kaufman is like a B-movie parody version of Mel Brooks, Mel does the A-list parodies and satires and Lloyd handles the crazier, gross and kinky low budget ones Mel wouldn't touch LOL! Of course Meet The Spartans is the best parody ever, so much better than The 300. In Australia Speccy Spice jammed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and hosted, Hey, Hey it's Saturday! A national TV institution. Mr. Proops is married to a woman, Jennifer.
