It's time for The Truth!Borussia Dortmund parted company with head coach Nuri Sahin this week after a set of deeply concerning performances that have seen a giant of German and European football languishing in 10th in the Bundesliga, as well as falling out of the automatic qualification places in Europe. But the problems at the famous Westfalenstadion go far deeper than just a rookie coach seemingly out of his depth. Instead, they are endemic to the very fabric of one of the most well-known clubs in the world - issues with recruitment both on and off the pitch have led to this malaise, as well as failing to keep up with the changing times around them. We take a look at the decline of their league form, that was somewhat papered over by an excellent Champions League run last season, problems with getting the right kind of people in place to allow the club to flourish, and the 'keep it in-house' nature of the front office, all of which have contributed to this fall from grace. So can these problems be turned around? Or are Dortmund destined to be a fading force for more than just the immediate future? The Truth is somewhere in the middle... Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davies break down the USMNT's emphatic 3-0 victory over Costa Rica to close out January camp. Diego Luna delivered a “big balls” performance that wowed Mauricio Pochettino (04:56), Zack Steffen made a strong case for the No. 1 goalkeeper spot (12:10), and Patrick Agyemang is skyrocketing up the striker depth chart (13:59). The guys react to Pochettino naming his all-time favorite USMNT players (29:35) —spoiler: they've got opinions—and highlight the winners and losers from January camp (35:37). Plus, a quick recap of how the Americans fared in matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League league phase (49:08), Nuri Şahin's departure from Dortmund, and what it means for Gio Reyna's minutes (55:47). In transfer news, Luca De La Torre is heading home to sunny San Diego, while Lennard Maloney rolls the dice with a move to Mainz (57:50). PSG vs Man City, who would have predicted that these two clubs would face off in a fight for survival in this season's Champions League? Today, Dotun, Andy and Jonathan Johnson assess how this result could be a turning point for PSG.Elsewhere, Atlético Madrid are back and Andy reckons they could go deep in the Champions League this season. And poor old Nuri Şahin has been sacked by Borussia Dortmund. Hello Rank Squad! We talk a lot about the teams who are outdoing themselves, playing above their means, and taking their rightful flowers for their performances, but there's two sides to every coin. For every Bournemouth, there's a West Ham; for every Mainz, a Borussia Dortmund; and every Athletic Club, a Real Betis. We break down the teams who have struggled to meet their expectations across the course of this season - those who have flattered to deceive, those who have fallen well short of their pre-season expectations, and those who have been forced to reconsider their course midway through the campaign. Before that, there's time to look at a few more things going on in Europe - the resurgence of Kylian Mbappé's Real Madrid form and the fact that all three of the 'Tres Grandes' of Portugal - Sporting, Benfica and Porto - have now changed coaches in the same season for the first time in history. It's Ranks! Nuri Şahin has been sacked by Borussia Dortmund after a fourth straight defeat, but the underlying issues are yet to be addressed.
In this episode, Jacob and Carver dive deep into Borussia Dortmund's latest struggles, analyzing their losses against Holstein Kiel and Eintracht Frankfurt. They discuss the challenges facing the team, the future of Nuri Şahin as head coach, and whether a change in leadership could turn things around. Could Erik ten Hag be the solution? Enjoy.BVB POD MERCH
Andy thinks that Barcelona have, at times, played the best football in Spain this season. So how are they six points off the top of the table? David Cartlidge joins Dotun and Andy to explain just that.Elsewhere, David tells us why Dortmund's struggles should be blamed on the club, not Nuri Şahin. Plus, Andy gives us the most controversial food pairing of the season so far.Ask us a question on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, and email us here: otc@footballramble.com.For ad-free shows, head over to our Patreon and subscribe: patreon.com/footballramble.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content after the main meal was served up on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights by the third round of our new 36-team competition. We start with Tuesday's games, opening with Barcelona's 4-1 dismantling of Bayern Munich that saw them lay recent demons to rest against their most regular scourge, the naivety of some of what Bayern did both offensively and defensively, and how Raphinha's promotion to the captain's armband in Catalunya has him cooking on Ballon d'Or contender form. Then it's on to Leipzig, where Liverpool made it 11 wins from 12 with a 1-0 victory against one of the teams from Jurgen Klopp's new fiefdom, and a quick look at City's 5-0 win over Sparta Prague which saw Erling Haaland score one of the most acrobatic goals you'll ever see in your life. We round up the rest of Wednesday's action too, peeking at Leverkusen's 1-1 draw with high-flying Brest, Celtic's imperious defensive performance against previously free-scoring Atalanta, Feyenoord ending Benfica's year-long unbeaten run at the Estadio da Luz, Lille stunning a Madrid side for the second time in two matchdays - this time Atleti at the Wanda, Inter's impact substitutes getting the job done for them against Young Boys, and hapless Salzburg's 2-0 loss to a very punchy Dinamo Zagreb side. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins with the other side of La Liga's Clasico - Real Madrid's 5-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund which centred around the identity of these two clubs, and how this script could have been written by almost anyone who knows them. We touch on Vinicius Jr's incredible hat-trick, and the decisions that BVB manager Nuri Sahin made which took the game away from what could have been a famous night of revenge for his side. We head over to Birmingham next to discuss just what to make of Unai Emery's Aston Villa and their 2-0 win over Bologna that installed them at the top of the Champions League table, and down to North London to discuss a 1-0 win for the Arsenal that was a little bit uncomfortable at times, but dearly needed by Mikel Arteta's side to just quieten the noise and get themselves back on the right track. We finish with a roundup of the rest of the Tuesday games - Milan's 3-1 win over Club Brugge that included an Olympic Goal from the irrepressible Christian Pulisic, Stuttgart's well-deserved 1-0 win over Juventus which saw the Bianconeri's unbeaten start under Thiago Motta derailed, PSG's profligacy in a 1-1 draw against PSV, Monaco's 5-1 thumping of Crvena Zvezda which reaffirmed their credentials as a team to be reckoned with, Girona's first ever Champions League win as they beat Slovan Bratislava 2-0, and Sporting's 2-0 win over Sturm Graz which saw another goal and an assist for Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal could only manage a 2-0 win at home to PSG. Pathetic. Today, Pete, Vish and Jim (mainly Pete) are here to question why Arsenal weren't able to despatch this new woke incarnation of PSG by at least four goals, like the mighty Newcastle did last season.Elsewhere, Pete questions whether everyone in the world named Nuri Şahin is extremely handsome.
