Minute Eighty Five: From Coulson Taking Charge to The Cage Plummeting Toward the EarthPlaywright Dean O'Carroll joins us in this episode! In the eighty-fifth minute of The Avengers...It's a heavy minute! First, Agent Coulson takes charge of things in the detention area, but then Loki surprises him and Thor by appearing behind him and driving the scepter into his back. This is the moment the writer/director has been building toward with all of our growing sympathies for Coulson. It's a mean writing trick but an incredibly effective one. This does lead to some questions from us though. At what point did Loki actually start his magic? And how did he get the scepter? Did the mercenary here grab it for him at some point? We kinda lose track of it after the helicarrier attack starts. Regardless, the minute's effective, and the fact that Loki and Thor don't speak but only share looks before Loki hits the plunger says volumes. It's a powerful minute. Minute Thirty: From Coulson's Input to The Other's QuestionMatthew Costello, author of Secret Identity Crisis: Comic books and the Unmasking of Cold War America, joins us in this episode! In the thirtieth minute of The Avengers...The relationship between Steve and Agent Coulson is central to our conversation here. How does it play for Steve as the man out of time? It's interesting how he reads the stars and stripes as old-fashioned. Is that his understanding of the modern era? Phil acts as the audience surrogate here, helping us (and Steve) connect to what's going on in the world here.We also get to talk about the odd lair Loki's managed to put together (in just two days!). They're very busy. How is Loki doing his thing with Sanctuary? Or did they notify him they wanted to chat? Why does The Other seem to be Jawa-sized and we only see his top half? Well, it's awfully uncomfortable, but Clark Gregg and Chris Evans play the scene perfectly. We talk a bit about the quinjet and how Steve's catching up on yet another example of that fantastic SHIELD tech we just saw Tony using. How does Gregg's acting seem as he gets up from the desk? Following up on our conversation yesterday with Matthew Costello, these actors feel so perfect in the roles. They absolutely capture the right essence of their lines here and make for a wonderfully memorable scene. Minute Twenty-Five: From More Me to a Tap on the ChestJames Anderson and Colin Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast join us in this episode! In the twenty-fifth minute of The Avengers...We have a lot of love for the location shots in midtown Manhattan where we see Grand Central Station and the area around the MetLife building. You can even see cranes, showing that Tony's still working on redoing this building. The building's design is very cool and there are some wonderfully detailed shots that only last a few seconds, but they do a great job of laying out this building, which later filmmakers likely weren't even aware they'd be using as much as they did.We have a great conversation about Tony and his personality, as well as his working and romantic relationship with Pepper. This scene plays it so well and we're here for it. We also get some of Jarvis, and a hint of what's to come with Agent Coulson. Don't worry – we also talk plenty about Tony's suit removal unit, which seems to have been nicknamed the car wash by everyone who worked on it. "Have you checked the children?" Just the phrase makes your eye twitch a little. In the days before Creepypasta, there were urban legends passed down by word of mouth. Or that 75% of the film adaptation would be the journey of a man in search of Colleen Dewhurst. Who knew? In 2006 they remade this little terrifying tale. Did they crank up the crank calling chaos or did they get a dial tone? Why is Roy from the office not more helpful? Why didn't Agent Coulson just call on S.H.I.E.L.D.? Minute Ninety-One: From Coulson's Cheeky Check-In to Heimdall's Icy Struggle Joining us to discuss Thor, Jane, Agent Coulson, Loki, Laufey, Heimdall, and more are James Anderson and Colin M. Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast! In the ninety-first minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... It's Agent Coulson! And not just any Agent Coulson, but the one we've really grown to love. His dialogue here seems spot-on perfect for how Coulson should act. We love this guy! And how funny is it that he calls after Thor and Jane as they fly off! So perfect. The taken/stolen/borrowed bit cracks us all up. The way Thor speaks to Coulson feels very... formal. Is this some official pact that Thor is making with a Midgardian representative on behalf of Asgard? Sadly, this is a picture wrap on Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson for this film. But he'll be back in a few seasons! Thor flies off with Jane. We compare him asking Jane if she'd like him to show her the bridge to someone asking the pretty girl if she'd like to see his room. Very funny. We all agree that Natalie's/Jane's reaction to Chris/Thor pulling her in close is perfect, and likely the same reaction we'd all give. Any chance that they had a chance to check on Agents Cale and Garrett who theoretically are still on the top of the library? Back in Asgard, Loki's up to no good. Turns out, he's brought King Laufey and three other Jotuns here so they can kill Odin. But why do they walk so slowly as they leave the Observatory? If any Asgardian happened to look out, would they see Loki, Laufey, and the Jotuns out for a casual stroll? Or is Loki magically concealing them? And why does Laufey leave two sentries to stand guard with the frozen Heimdall? It's a busy minute as the climactic act three kicks into high gear, and James and Colin are here for all of it. Minute Ninety: From a God's Storm to An Agent's Interruption Joining us to discuss Thor taking down the Destroyer (along with some funky rules when it comes to fire), Thor's return to his friends, Jane's reaction, and Agent Coulson popping in just in the nick of time is Father David Mowry, Chaplain of the Movies by Minute community. In the ninetieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor creates some sort of tornado by spinning his hammer around really quickly, which also keeps him aloft and somehow sucks the Destroyer into the air. Doesn't seem like physics work here correctly, but... okay. We'll go along with it. And speaking of physics not working, the Destroyer blasts at Thor three times. The first two times, Thor bats the blast away with his hammer. That really doesn't make sense, but again... okay. We'll go along with it. (But even the Destroyer's head gets hit to the side as if Thor's striking it, not the fire blast. It really makes no sense.) How does Thor keep himself afloat when he's swinging his hammer at the fire blasts? Wouldn't he plummet? Is this actually helping by moving the battle away from the town or making it worse with cars flung all over the place? Thor essentially uses his hammer as a cork and plugs the Destroyer's head, stopping that third blast of fire. And it kind of explodes? Or at least breaks down. The shot of it exploding from a very wide shot of the town has horribly rendered CG buildings and looks terrible. Luckily, it's on screen for only the briefest of moments. Honestly, all of this is easy to forgive because we're here to see Thor walk with an adult swagger out of the smoke. That's such a great moment. Jane's reaction to his outfit is great. But seriously, it's that comedic moment right at the end of this minute when we hear Agent Coulson piping in from off screen. So funny! Father Mowry talks a bit about the story of the prodigal son in today's Christ and the Cape segment. It's the showdown in Puente Antiguo, and Thor comes out on top! Minute Eighty-Two: Trouble on the Horizon to a Plan on the Table Joining us to discuss everyone's reaction to the arrival of the Destroyer, as well as a coffee cup gaffe, are Robin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes. In the eighty-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Why does the Destroyer's arrival through Bifrost look like a mushroom cloud? Are we meant to draw that comparison? Once again, we talk about how much we love Darcy and little lines like, “Is someone else coming?” Does Thor know this is the Destroyer arriving? Is this giant swirling cloud because it's such a big ‘being' arriving? We talk a bit about the Destroyer and how it would've been nice if there was more of a direct explanation as to how someone needs to use their soul essentially to control the Destroyer. There's a bit of comic book comparison with Bifrost travel and the Destroyer, not to mention some discussion about some of the comic origins for this particular story and when Sif was controlling the Destroyer. It's fun how casual Agent Coulson is here. And considering everything from Iron Man and Iron Man 2, it makes perfect sense to us that he would think this is another person in a suit who has arrived. We discuss the coffee cup gaffe. More streets of Puente Antiguo talk. We can finally get a good shot of Arturo's! In the seventy-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... So the Warriors Three and Sif take the Bifrost to Midgard, and lo and behold! Loki's watching. But that begs the question – how long has Loki been standing on his balcony waiting to see Bifrost open up? Is Heimdall watching Loki watch the Bifrost? The Warriors Three and Sif arrive on Midgard It looks like the same spot where Thor arrived, so is this really the local Bifrost junction? Turns out SHIELD notices them arrive, and they now have handy computer modeling programs to show it. So do they know it's some form of wormhole travel happening here? Agent Coulson sure doesn't have many questions. He's raring to go out to the desert to investigate. With everyone else is so busy, Thor and Jane make breakfast. It's a very quiet moment – maybe the quietest in the film? – as Thor and Jane make breakfast for a hung over Erik and smiling Darcy. When did Thor learn to make breakfast? What do we think of the deleted scene where Thor delivers a new mug to Isabela to replace the one he broke? So many things are put into action in this minute – must be nearing act three – and Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie are here for it. Tune in! Minute Sixty-Seven: From Erik Paltering to Thor Reflecting Joining us to discuss more of Erik lying, his ‘escape' with Thor, Thor taking Jane's notebook, and the trip to the bar is Bryon Lockhart, host of the Marine Corps Movie Minute and Co-Host of the Marvel Events Timeline Podcasts. In the sixty-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Erik pivots and pivots again with his lies. Stellan Skarsgård carries the humor here and delivers. It's clear to us that Agent Coulson doesn't buy into Erik's lies at all. Does Erik believe it works? Or does he know Coulson's playing him? We find it so interesting that Coulson's role was written to be Nick Fury in the film. This makes so much more sense to us to have Coulson here. But should Coulson have let Erik walk through their command center to the holding cell? What about all the sensitive information everywhere? Erik's lines to Thor are hilarious. “Donnie, Donnie, Donnie...” Does Coulson see Thor take Jane's journal? What about the Agent literally standing right in front of Thor facing him? They have to have intended for Thor to take it to Jane so they can let her continue her work while now watching her. The bar joke makes us laugh. Did you know they filmed this in a strip club? Does that matter? Erik takes Thor to the bar for a drink... and a talk. Foo Fighters “Walking” plays as Erik and Thor drink and talk. The music video is a spin on Joel Schumaker's Michael Douglas movie Falling Down. The only connection we can find is they sing “Learning to walk again” which seems to fit with Thor's place in the world now. Thor's hair looks terrible here in the bar. But we like Thor's introspective moment. It's impossible to identify any of the background actors here unfortunately. And we talk about product placement versus just getting a release. Film talk! Minute Sixty-Six: From Loki Leaving to Erik Lying Joining us to discuss Loki's departure from Midgard and Erik's struggle to convincingly lie to Agent Coulson to free Thor is Bryon Lockhart, host of the Marine Corps Movie Minute and Co-Host of the Marvel Events Timeline Podcasts. In the sixty-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki looks up at the sky. Is he imagining he's looking at Odin or Heimdall? And how interesting that this is a moment Branagh doesn't cut to a god's eye view shot for this moment. It's interesting that they opt to just have Loki walk out of the shot instead of showing him depart in some magical way. We debate if it works or if we'd rather see him using one of his back doors. Did Loki really hope he could pick up the hammer? Or was it just for fun on the off chance he could have lifted it? Agent Coulson watches Erik lying through his teeth to free Thor, but does he believe it? Before that, Agent Sitwell moves into the room to talk to Coulson, and he goes from dark to light. Is there a chance they were already thinking about him being a HYDRA agent at this point? It sure feels that way. The SHIELD Crater Base is currently under repair, and was that the 1st Assistant Director we hear call “Set”? Sitwell lets Coulson know he has a visitor, and it's Erik. Why is it Erik who comes? Why not Jane? Or both of them? Perhaps Erik worries that Jane is too hot-headed. Did Jane have Donald Blake's driver's license lying around with his clothes when they broke up? Or did Darcy whip up this whole license? How funny that the New York driver's license actually has Excelsior on it. Is that why they went with it? Coulson clearly doesn't actually believe Erik lying, but seems to know he can use the situation to get more information out by following them. Erik lying about steroids is hilarious, but his comedic bit about ‘Donald' being upset about SHIELD's jackbooted thugs is great and really shows his feelings about SHIELD. Matthew takes a deep dive on the address on Donald's address. It's a kooky rabbit hole he went down. The photo of Thor on the driver's license? It's the photo Darcy took of him in Isabela's Diner. It's a comedic minute watching Erik try to spin lies to Agent Coulson so that they'll release Thor, and Bryon Lockheart's here for it all. Tune in! Minute Sixty-Two: From Arthur C. Clarke to South Africa Jane and Erik debate while Agent Coulson interrogates Thor, and Kyle Olson and Rob Kubasko from seasons two and three are here for all of it! In the sixty-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Erik continues pressing Jane about science. Jane presses right back about Arthur C. Clarke, but does she quote him correctly? Turns out most people don't! They each have great points but again, it feels like Erik has shut off his scientific mind simply because of the nature of the myths Thor represents to him and his childhood. It's Darcy, though, who pops in with some surprising smarts that surprises both Jane and Erik, and ends their conversation. Once again, we have yet further proof about how many laughs there are in this film. Sure, Darcy's at the heart of many of them, but Natalie Portman certainly holds her own here. We return to the SHIELD Crater Base where Agent Coulson interrogates Thor in the holding cell. Yeah, so apparently the holding cell is yet another room they trucked in as a part of this quick-assembly job at the crater. We start in the Command Center where we can see Agent Sitwell and Techie, but there are so many other SHIELD agents here who we just can't identify. It's frustrating. To that end, while we're in the Command Center, we can see that they're still monitoring the hammer and it's still glowing in the monitors. So why is it no longer causing electromagnetic interference? Agent Coulson interrogates Thor. Is there a reason he's approaching the interrogation as if Thor is from Earth? Does he know Thor's from space and is just toying with him? Or does he really not know yet? Thor remains not just tight-lipped through this interrogation but also does everything he can to avoid Coulson's eyes. He's very sullen here. But why isn't he in cuffs or tied up in some capacity? Minute Forty-Seven: From Jane's Frustration to Rooftop Depression Joining us to discuss Agent Coulson's gentle appropriation of all of Jane's research and gear is Matt Carroll, one of the two co-hosts of the award-winning MCUCast and founder of the Stranded Panda Podcast Network. In the forth-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Agent Coulson works well as the distraction point person, keeping Jane's attention focused on himself so his team can continue taking all of her gear. Again, how does Erik know so much about SHIELD? Does he know who Agent Coulson is? Or is it simply the word SHIELD puts him in such fear? SHIELD and Agent Coulson really act like a shadow government organization here. It's interesting how Coulson acts, particularly as his character (and SHIELD) continue moving forward. There is that sense of personal rights versus the collective good here. Which side are we on? SHIELD isn't quite at the point where they want to bring the actual scientists into their fold yet, and when they do bring the scientist in charge of this information into the fold, why is it Erik rather than Jane? Granted, Natalie Portman likely was less interested in playing in bit roles across the MCU than Stellan Skarsgård was. But in context of the story, it would've made so much more sense to bring Jane along. We revel in how much comedy flows through this film in so many beats. That bit when Jane comments on her journal holding everything then Agent Coulson signals one of his agents to take it? Great comedy. Erik, as usual, stands and absorbs most of the time. Until Jane needs him. And we try to identify as many agents in here as we can. But what's with all the female agents that aren't listed anywhere? Very frustrating. Last but not least, we talk about the departing convoy and the lone truck that left way earlier. Agent Coulson and SHIELD is gone. The Scientists Three retreat to the roof. Is this meant to create a bit of a rooftop connection with the donut moment in Iron Man 2? In the script, the scene with the Warriors Three and Loki would've separated these two scenes. Clearly, the editors found a better way to create a flow in the film. No matter how you slice it, this is another great Branagh dutch angle. SHIELD raids Jane's lab and we're here to talk about it with Matt Carroll. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Forty-Six: From Thor's Valediction to Coulson's Appropriation Joining us to discuss the royal and polite way Thor says goodbye and Coulson's own polite way of appropriating all of the Scientist Three's gear is Matt Carroll, one of the two co-hosts of the award-winning MCUCast and founder of the Stranded Panda Podcast Network. In the forty-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Jane has no idea what to do after Thor kisses her hand. Her flustered behavior is adorable. Matt struggles with the fact that Thor falls in love with Jane by the end of the film but it does feel like they pull a lot of the romantic comedy tropes here to make this work. So to that end, if you can't buy into the rom-com nature and their meet-cute, you may struggle with this relationship. But is Thor interested in Jane at this point or just kissing the cute girl's hand? Regardless, Darcy and Erik curtsey and bow, respectively, and it's adorable. Especially Darcy. Which certainly holds true with her reactions so far in the film. Erik's bow is a bit more awkward and uncomfortable, but it's as if he feels compelled. It's great. In the background, you can see the paved road turns to dirt, giving away a bit of the old west town in which this was filmed. And have you ever noticed the Christmas Every Day shop on Main Street? Wow, does this feel like real small-town America. Let's not forget the Liquor Locker! The Scientists Three find SHIELD agents raiding her lab. Agent Coulson and SHIELD seem a bit more like a threat in this film. That feels new in the MCU. Well, there was a bit of that in Iron Man 2. But did you know that this was originally scripted to be Nick Fury? They couldn't get Samuel L. Jackson, though, so it was rewritten as Agent Coulson, which may be why he feels a bit different here. Erik clearly has heard of SHIELD though. Where? Will we find out in the future? The rest of the Scientists Three don't seem to have heard of them. This film really sets up this idea of a shadow government organization. Does that work for SHIELD? To that end, how hard is it to come up with acronyms for business names? Erik may say to Jane to let it go but Jane says no – this is her life's work up to this point. She's not ready to let it go. Was there a point in Erik's life when he was less professorial? Why does Agent Coulson say they're investigating a security threat? Is that a lie to create their cover-up? Or do they feel there is a security risk at this point? Why doesn't he call it out as an 084? But what was SHIELD looking for? We see some SHIELD agents. There are a lot. A lot more than the Scientists Three. But we can't really see any faces here. Perhaps it's an intentional feel where they all blend together as ‘agents.' The script says the back of the truck is loaded with Jane's Dark Matter analysis machine. Was that meant to tie into Malekith's dark matter dagger in Thor: The Dark World? What's funny about that, though, is that it looks like it's just loaded with camera gear from the crew. It doesn't look like scientific equipment from the Scientists Three. The Scientists Three go from saying goodbye to arguing with SHIELD agents, and we're here to talk about it all. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Seven: From Stan the Man to Bare-Chested Thor Joining us to discuss Stan Lee as well as Thor's perfect body is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. In the thirty-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... How strong does that chain have to be to rip the bed of a Dodge pickup truck right off the frame? Or is it that the truck itself was not made well? In a minute of perfect bodies, this truck proves it does not have the perfect body. If they chipped the rock away from under Mjølnir, would they be able to pull it away? Look! It's Stan Lee in his cameo! Turns out, Stan the Man is driving the pickup that gets torn apart. It's been disproved that Stan's one of the Watchers now that What If...? has been released, but we explore what he would be up to if he were the Watcher during this crossover period between The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and this film. Agent Coulson finally arrives. And it looks a bit familiar as we've seen a bit of this at the end of Iron Man 2. He's very stoic as the SHIELD agent, and as his first foray outside of the Iron Man films, it really feels like he's starting to step into his own here. But he doesn't have Thor's perfect body. They do make him feel more menacing though. Is that because for this film, they're meant to feel more of a threat during the continuing sequences with Mjølnir? This moment again speaks so well about what Kevin Feige had been setting up with this crossover universe that becomes the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We talk about a few of the other actors playing townies at the crater as well. Back at Smith Motors in Jane's workshop, and we find Thor shirtless, showing off his perfect body. Thirsty, anyone? Thor is putting on clothes and we find him with jeans on. And that's it. Clearly, Hemsworth is happy to show off his body here because those months in the gym seriously paid off. Jessica wanted to discuss these minutes in particular because of the concept of thirst and how these films have subverted a bit of the trope of featuring women in moments simply included for thirsty male viewers by featuring these super men in super shape usually topless to satisfy fans. We discuss the male gaze versus the female gaze a bit. We also discuss the challenge of a male director filming the female gaze. Does that negate it? Though perhaps that's why it's so important to have Darcy and Jane both staring at Thor's perfect body. Darcy's apology/non-apology to Thor about tasing him feels like classic Darcy. Jane does a great job of averting her eyes, oh Lord. Thor fiddles with the computer mouse and Jane stops him. And she realizes how close she is to that perfect bod. And we realize just how much taller he is than she. But while Thor's body may be the perfect body, that damn bleached eyebrow thing and terrible wig. They almost make his entire face disappear. Oh, and we haven't even mentioned the other beautiful thing to look at – those incredible New Mexico vistas through the enormous windows of Smith Motors. Wow, what a beautiful part of the world. We've got Stan Lee's cameo as well as a whole conversation about the thirst everyone has after seeing Hemsworth look the way he looks. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Two: From Tasers to Triage Back with us to discuss Darcy's Taser and Kat Dennings' awesomeness, plus a sweet but ditsy admissions nurse, is ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard from MCU: Location Scout. In the thirty-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor tries to figure out what Realm he's in, but he goes with Alfheim and Nornheim first, neither of which is populated with human-looking beings. Why start with those? This raises an interesting question for us – are we meant to believe that this is Thor's first time to Midgard? Based on conversations he has in later films, it's clear he's been to other Realms but perhaps not here? Is this how myths perpetuate? The Asgardians came down in 965 A.D. and then not since, leaving the stories to get passed down to create those myths? And it certainly seems more logical now for them to have cut the representatives from the Nine Realms from Thor's coronation scene. That would have raised so many more questions. Darcy pulls out her taser and she's not afraid to use it. It makes total sense to us that Darcy carries a taser. Which kind of taser is this? There are a good number of them, and the kind with the wires that hit the victim like this? They're not just for police. Thor's reaction to Darcy's taser shows that he still has no idea he has no powers anymore. This is something he'll have to learn the hard way over the next few minutes. Darcy's reaction to Erik and Jane after she's tased Thor is classic. “What? He was freaking me out!” Such classic Darcy. Jane's complete and utter shock leaves her with her jaw practically on the ground. It's a great moment if you catch it. Jane decides to join them. But not until they've loaded the post-tasered Thor into her Pinzgauer. It's a bit odd because in the last scene, she told them to go and that she would stay. There's a scripted line that Erik has telling Jane that he won't leave her behind in the desert at night. Which is smart. Did they need that? Maybe not. But it does seem a bit like a change of heart on Jane's part. What's funny is that she doesn't help them at all get the post-tasered Thor into the Pinzgauer. It's Hammer Time! As they drive away, we see Mjølnir fall from the sky. But the Bifrost doesn't act the same way as it comes down. Why is that? Perhaps Mjølnir fell out of the Bifrost on its way down? Another reason it ends up in a different spot? It's hard to be sure. We debate about why they don't turn when it comes through the sky because it's quite the site. Maybe it's because they're looking forward, not back, as they drive. To that end, we describe Mjølnir as a gutter ball. Odin didn't get quite the right spin on it as he sent it into the Bifrost and so as it got close to Midgard, it landed in the gutter. Off to the County Hospital! Having shot Thor with the taser, they decide to take him to the hospital. As it turns out, this location is one that Jay found for his site and was the first person to pinpoint it online. It's actually a government building called the Toney Anaya Building in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This hospital looks particularly great with Branagh's and his cinematographer's dutch angles. It has a great comic book look but also allows for more of the location to show up. We see the hosed-down parking lot as they pull in with their Pinzgauer. We talked about this filmmaking technique the last few seasons and see they're still using it here. Let's talk about Dawn the Admissions Nurse. Before we get to Dawn, just another note about how much we love Darcy. Her “Yes I did,” line about having shot Thor with the taser is so perfect here, and it still allows her to have a unique character. We really want the Wu and Darcy show now. And all of this really started with Agent Coulson back in Iron Man. Juliet Lopez plays Dawn the Admissions Nurse. No fault of hers, but why did they go this ditzy angle? It makes so much sense why they cut the scene down so drastically. Perhaps they wanted to show this hospital dealing with so many people from rural New Mexico to be a place populated by employees who weren't that smart? We do play the IMDb game with Juliet to see what they list as what she's known for. One of them is Breaking Bad. Makes sense for New Mexico. We end with Nurse Terry preparing to draw blood from Thor. We don't see much here. Just a hint, but we find it intriguing that Branagh chose to film this from Thor's POV as he comes to and finds himself in the hospital. Thor gets tasered and taken to a hospital. it's a busy minute and ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard is here to chat about all of it with us. Tune in! Phase 1, Episode 3. Cue the AC/DC, as Tony Stark returns as Iron Man in the third movie in Phase One - Iron Man 2. Robert Downey Jr, as Tony Stark, returns along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau. Tony battles his own personal demons, government interference, world-building MCU plotlines from Marvel executives and a man who just wants his bird. Added to the mix is Mickey Rourke as, the villain and bird lover, Whiplash, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha, we're-not-supposed-to-know-she's-Black-Widow, Rushman. Don Cheadle takes over the role of James "Rhodey" Rhodes. Agent Coulson appears with Clark Gregg taking on the character that will span to more movies and beyond. We see a credited Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and, of course, we get to meet one of Pat and Mike's favorite MCU characters - Justin Hammer played with great results by Sam Rockwell. The Justin Hammer love is palpable, but Pat and Mike also get into some of pressing issues with this sequel to widely successful, Iron Man. They examine a movie and a franchise that is trying to tell a story and set up countless more. But regardless, the MCU train is picking up speed and a drunken fight between Iron Man and Iron Patriot can't stop it. The Other Identity - A Comic Book Podcast

The dynamic duo of Robbie Landis and Ben Morse is back once again for another episode of the Other Identity. The Other Identity is a podcast about exploring the culture created by comic books. This week Robbie and Ben dig deep into the effect of loss and death in comics. Some of the most famous story-lines in comics revolve around the death of a hero. This week Robbie and Ben caught up with they've been reading in their spare time. Ben continues to work through his read of the Blackest Night storyline. Robbie finished his #InBlackestNight challenge weeks ago, but Ben has barely scratched the surface. As Robbie continues his #DCRebirthEraChallenge he talks about how much he's loving Supergirl. He also expresses his hopes and dreams for the series long-term. Several months ago a discussion sparked on Twitter about comic book deaths. Whether or not bringing back a dead character invalidates the weight of the original death. One of Ben's favorite stories is the Death of Barry Allen in the Crisis on Infinite Earth's crossovers. Robbie thinks that the Death of Spider-Man in the Ultimate Timeline is one of the best stories from Marvel. Where the two differ, is that Robbie doesn't think bringing a character back hurts the original story. They discuss at length, if Barry Allen's resurrection is worth it or if Wally West actually suffers more as a character. It doesn't stop with death in comics though. Despite the short history of the comic book movie or TV show, there are a few examples to draw from there as well. Robbie and Ben use the death and Resurrection of Agent Coulson from Avengers and Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to keep the discussion going.

Welcome to Episode 132 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others.  This week the Geeks (Mitch, Jeff, Jake and Matt Orrin) recorded at the Sexpot Comedy Studios, located above the awesome Mutiny Information Cafe, for another packed episode of geeky goodness.   Batman was a HUGE part of our conversation this week, specifically his lower region.  A new iteration of Batman, geared towards a slightly more mature audience, features the Bat-dong and Jake tells us how big it is.  He makes it seem as if it was as big as Dr. Manhattan's in the Watchmen movie, but hopefully it's not blue.  Imagine the cod piece he'd have to wear.  Fortunately, he has Wayne Tech to create all of the goodies he needs to fight crime.  Especially when its criminals that use THAT technology to commit the crime!  Then again, he couldn't be his best with his trusty manservant, Alfred.  Matt Orrin thinks Batman could never marry another person because he already has a life partner in Alfred.  What are your thoughts? We then talked some Superman, because of the rumors that Henry Cavill is moving on from DCEU.  Nothing has been confirmed, except that negotiations regarding a cameo in the upcoming Shazam movie aren't working.  There have also been talks about Michael B. Jordan possibly being cast as the Man of Steel.  We think Jon Hamm would make a good Superman, but it would depend on what timeline we are looking at and the context. Michael b Jordan casting rumors.  The DCUniverse streaming app is in FULL effect and we are loving it!  So much old content that is now available, like the Justice League and JL Unlimited animated shows.   The Captain Marvel teaser/trailer was just released and it got us very excited.  We saw some Skrulls, a young two-eyed Nick Fury, and Agent Coulson!!  We still don't know a lot about what will happen in this movie, or who Jude Law will portray.  Some think he could be Mar-vell, but we'll have to wait till March 2019.  We also need to know how this movie will tie in to the upcoming Infinity War movie.  We heard Taika Waititi was on set for reshoots...Korg?!  As usual, Marvel talks lead us to Netflix and their related shows.  We discussed Iron Fist, season 2, and Jake felt it left a bad taste similarly to the show, the OA.  What will happen to the future of these shows, and which new shows will be introduced?  When will we ever see these characters in the larger MCU?  Will Netflix ever give up these properties?  We do know the Loki and Scarlett Witch are supposed to get their own show, but on an upcoming Disney streaming service.  Is everyone getting a streaming service?  Stay tuned for more info on the soon to be released Streaming Geeks service. This weeks featured celebrity was Diedrich Bader, as we discussed his best roles.  He was a great Batman, he was awesome in Office Space, and great as Oswald Lee Harvey on the Drew Carey show. What's your favorite role of his?  We then talked about old TV shows, as they are becoming much accessible on the many streaming services available to us, like Hulu or CBS.  We love to watch old superhero shows such as the Flash, whose costume then might be better than the current one.  Its always great when actors from these old shows appear in the new shows.  DC, and especially CW, has been really good about including old actors, such as John Wesley Shipp, Helen Slater, Dean Cain, Mark Hamill and many others.  Do you have a favorite? If you havent already checked out Denver Open Media, and what they have offered then go to https://www.denveropenmedia.org  As you might already know, we'll be on Tuesday nights at 10pm.  Some episodes of Broadcast Geeks are recorded at the Comedy RoomRoom inside of El Charrito at 2104 Larimer Street in the heart of Denver's ballpark neighborhood. Assuming Cap, Thor, and Tony all die or don't return after Avengers 4, this leaves T'Challa (and maybe Doctor Strange?) as the new face of the MCU and the new main box office draw. Along with Captain Marvel, this means a very, very different Phase 4 cast. Does this setup Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross in Captain Marvel? Is Everett K. Ross the new Agent Coulson? Black-market arms dealer Ulysses Klaue smuggled large amounts of vibranium out of Wakanda and sold them on the black market. Was Howard Stark a buyer? First scene in BP is 1992, right after Howard's assassination months earlier. Who might be a villain for the sequel? M'Baku starts out as a jealous villain attempting to take the throne of Wakanda for himself, only to be defeated by T'Challa, turning him into a reluctant ally. Could that alliance be short lived? After that, Jonathan, who is known for his Captain America and Agent Coulson cosplays, talk about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The current movies out, which ones we loved, how Iron Man started it all and the upcoming slate of movies and what we hope to see. The video game franchise Halo is next.  Jonathan talks about how the Halo games have evolved, what draws him to that series specifically and more. We finish with a conversation about cosplay.  Find out why Jonathan got into cosplay and how it has evolved to another level.  He offers suggestions about how to get into it if you're interested and what he does to bring that next level of authenticity to his cosplays.
