She created Mess in a Bottle as a way to give voice to the voiceless in her community, empowering people to express themselves. Danielle learns about Kalilah’s journey to build Mess in a Bottle – starting out with less than $500 to seeing Serena Williams sport one of her creations. Small Business, Big Dreams require grit, determination and a whole lotta prayers. And did we mention thick skin? The kind of skin that doesn’t mind the no’s because behind every no a yes is around the corner. The startup life is not for punks, instead, they are the exact opposite. They are the strength we depend on, the energy we need daily and the hope that marches after just the one opportunity.

Kalilah is a graduate of Penn State University and Morgan State University with a Masters in Architecture.  After college the Brooklyn native migrated to Baltimore and worked as a designer for Under Armour.  Baltimore erupted after the death of Freddie Gray and Kalilah noticed there's was a disconnect in the neighborhood she worked and lived.   So rather than stand on the sidelines and do nothing she started "MESS IN A BOTTLE".  Mess in a Bottle's concept is based on a form of communication; dating as far back AS 310 B.C.  "I started Mess In A Bottle as a to give voice to the voiceless, giving them something to say without having to say a word.   The recent assassination of Nipsey Hussle hits close to home for Kalilah, after being victim of an armed robbery-she almost gave up pursuing the business.  The armed perpetrators didn't get any money but, what they stole from Kalilah was hope.  It would've been easy to close up her brick in mortar shop, instead she followed her gut and shared her experience on social media and her tribe responded with placing thousands of orders.  I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did preparing for it, conducting the actual interview and doing the editing.  Please please it would mean so much to me if you'd tell your friends about the podcast share it write a review on iTunes if it sucks say so; tell me what you like and what you think we can improve as we strive to continue brining you the absolute best in running and entertainment aka RUNUTAINMENT.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

On this episode, we dive into how Kalilah Wright - Founder and CEO of Mess In A Bottle embraced the power of  innovation and the pivot in her career and business.   An early lover of the arts and all things creative, Kalilah received her Bachelors of Arts from Penn State University and Masters degree from Morgan State University. She was an accomplished designer and trained architect working for Under Armor when she realized that this "idea" she had for a business could be something more than just a "dream" but a reality. Did it make sense for someone who was working at an applauded company to quit and pursue entrepreneurship full-time?  Better yet - did it make sense to quit a job as an architect to sell t-shirts? For, Kalilah it made a whole lot of sense.  In January 2016, Mess in a Bottle launched. The company sells creative messages written t-shirts and packaged in reusable bottles.  The brand was established to evoke change, question Kalilah’s audience and allow individuals wearing their messages to be vocal without saying anything at all. Each item is designed and printed at her Baltimore in-house studio space. Kalilah shares her #dreamdriving journey - bringing us along for the challenges, successes, and learning moments along the way.   Some of the topics we also discuss include: - What inspired Kalilah as a child - How Mess In A Bottle started - 3 Ways To Build A Great Team - The importance of the pivot - Tips for succeeding in eCommerce and building a team - The importance of being innovative... and more!
