When black people ask for discounts just know they don't have any money and they might not pay
Money circulates nearly an unlimited number of times in white neighborhoods, but only once in African-American communities, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth. On this episode, we ask: how can we keep the Black dollar circulating in Black communities for longer? First, we hear from Bernard Bronner, President and CEO of Bronner Bros., the Black, family-owned beauty company behind the annual Bronner Bros. Hair Show. After losing their best-selling hair care product because they didn't manufacture it themselves, the Bronners recognized the importance of ownership for sustaining not only the company, but the broader Black community. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with author and activist Maggie Anderson, who embarked on a year-long journey to only buy Black. Through her lived experience and supporting data, Maggie unpacks the historical and ongoing factors that prevent Black dollars from circulating through the Black community. And she highlights opportunities that exist for Black entrepreneurs and consumers to reclaim the power of their dollar. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. In order for us to reach the mountaintop of self-sufficiency, it'll take a TREMENDOUS amount of resources to complete the task. History has shown us that our blind reliance on the government to allocate the necessary monies to our coffers to sustain our neighborhoods either leads to some form of miscommunication or blatant misappropriation. But there is ONE ironclad, foolproof and guaranteed way that we African-Americans can ensure that we achieve the self-sustenance that we so richly deserve. If we can FINALLY pull this off, I believe it will give us the financial and political capital necessary to make demands that could reinforce our positioning with American institutions for generations to come. Ladies and Gentlemen… Kings and Queens… I'm talking about… Buying Black. And it'll bear more fruit than you might imagine. I'll explain. Tap in. "Middays with Danny Morrison." Buying Black is a movement, not a moment. The resurgence of Black Lives Matter has shed light into the lack of availability there is to shop Black-owned brands. While retailers were quick to react and place these products in stores, there's an educational and relational element that shouldn't be ignored to ensure these voices are continuously heard.Despite the demand for more diverse products, Black brands have historically been left out of the wider beauty conversation. The clear lack of shelf space is now being challenged by Aurora James' 15% pledge. Sephora, Macy's and Vogue have all committed to the pledge, but this is only the beginning. One creator who's making headway in this space is Julian Addo. In October 2017, Julian saw a gap in the premium haircare market and introduced gender-neutral Adwoa Beauty to the world for all hair textures including kinky hair. Julian joins us on unEDITED: Inside Retail to delve into the beauty market and educate retailers on what needs to be done in order to elevate representation on shelves. It’s Christmas time and rumor has it you should be supporting black businesses but do ALL black businesses deserve your support? 2020 was the year of “Black Lives Matter” and “buy black” and while most businesses blossomed, thrived and built strong lasting bonds with customers and communities others tanked. Unprofessionalism gets you no where, neither does over charging, having a nasty attitude or poor demeanor, selling used/worn clothes, lumpy cakes, cancelling appointments, failing to be attentive, rendering poor services, selling/serving burnt or undercooked food and a long list of other unbecoming behavior for business professionals. This episode gives classic examples of things that make you wanna say “support my a%!”

BLACK SOCRATES offers his version of a BUYING BLACK MANIFESTO for the BLACK COMMUNITY and invites his audience to not only critic the points in the manifesto, but to ask is it even necessary. Black-owned businesses need fuel to sustain, grow, and hire. If we support eliminating the Black wealth divide, we need to commit to buying from Black businesses. Our guest Kezia Williams, the founder of the Black UpStart, launched a new movement called "My Black Receipt" to promote buying from Black-owned businesses. She asks all communities (Black and Allies' alike) to commit to showing support from Juneteenth through July 6, by buying from Black businesses and then uploading the receipt online. In this episode, we discuss how Kezia started The Black UpStart and My Black Receipt, and the importance of buying, creating, and hiring in the Black-owned space.

Two things that work toward the detriment of the black community: Hope & Savings In this episode, I question the true level of progress and if we are really operating from a place of power or loud cries for mercy. "Buying Black" is a tenant of Black community empowerment aimed at supporting Black-owned business, yet economic redlining in the legal cannabis community creates an interesting knot to untangle: How can we buy Black in the cannabis space with so few legal cannabis businesses to select from? I can name the Black legal cannabis operators I know on one hand. Conversely, the unregulated market is rich with Black and brown cultivators who want a safe place to pursue their passions but have been forced underground, shipping packs out of state instead of participating in the emerging cannabis industry we have growing here in southern California. How do we merge our support for the legal cannabis industry with the principal of "buying black"? In this episode, @Donttawktome joins in on the discussion as we wrestle with buying black vs buying legal. The bboys are back with this latest episode, entitled “Buying Black and the Butt-Hurt Bigot”. Settling nicely into their twice weekly instagram live format, the boys use this Wednesday episode to focus on the pros and cons of “Buying Black”. @DaineSays and @DjIllnessuk discuss the brands and products which were staples growing up in Black households, but with #BlackPoundDay approaching soon, which brands are truly black owned and which are just presenting as such? Also special mention is giving to a little bigot who has seemingly had his feathers well and truly ruffled by the BLM marches and some gentle statue reconfiguration shall we say! On this episode of "By Any Means Necessary" hosts Jacquie Luqman and Sean Blackmon are joined by Jim Kavanagh, a political analyst and contributor to Counterpunch and ThePolemicist.net (where you can find his latest article, "The Party's Over: Bernie's Last Dance With the Dems") to talk about the Senate's passage of the Iran War Powers resolution, why the legislation's unlikelihood of surviving a presidential veto makes it more symbolic than anything else, the complicity of President Obama in normalizing independent warmongering by the executive branch, why so many presidents get elected on anti-war promises only to maintain or enhance the global US military presence, how Trump's openly imperialist ambitions represent a break from the prior emphasis on so-called humanitarian intervention, why breathless reports that Attorney General William Barr is supposedly attempting to rein in President Trump may be exaggerated, and how the obsession with Trump's interpersonal dramas distracts from actual debates over policy. In the second segment, Jacquie and Sean are joined by Ian Goodrum, senior editor with China Daily, to contextualize the "spike" in coronavirus cases in China which is being portrayed by mainstream media as a kind of pandemic, why the successful containment efforts in the overwhelming majority of China are going unappreciated, how hysteria over the issue is stoking a racist backlash facing Chinese people and others of Asian descent in the west, how the press is exploiting the issue to paint China as simultaneously lackadaisical and heavy-handed in their response, and how the virus' spread is impacting daily life in different regions of the country. In the third segment, Jacquie Luqman and Sean Blackmon are joined by Bernadette Ellorin, National Spokesperson for Bayan USA, to talk about the decision by the Filipino government of Rodrigo Duterte to cancel the military agreement with the US military, the need to resist both US imperialism and the repressive Duterte government, how the Filipino government's decision to rescind military access to may impact the relationship between Trump and Duterte and vice versa, and why relations between the US and the Philippines have always been characterized by colonialism. Later in the show, Jacquie and Sean are joined by Bryan Weaver, founder and director of Hoops Sagrado, and China Dickerson, National Political Director for Forward Majority, to talk about Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's endorsement of Mike Bloomberg for president, the prospects of Bloomberg selecting Bowser as his vice presidential candidate, whether some of Bloomberg's employees will actually vote for him come November, how the South Carolina primary may look for Joe Biden, the tension between pro-police and anti-police elements in Black communities, how such attitudes may explain Bloomberg's bump in support among Black voters, the DC Defenders' debut in the new XFL football league, prior attempts to create an alternative to the NFL (and how Donald Trump managed to end one), why some sports fans defend exploitative and anti-indigenous team names so intensely, the surprisingly international history of Juneteenth, and why Elizabeth Warren's poll numbers are dropping so rapidly.

In today’s summer rewind episode, we’re revisiting this conversation with Dr. Kristian Henderson of BLK+GRN. Dr. Kristian Henderson is a professor of public health, a natural lifestyle enthusiast, and the founder of BLK+GRN, an all-natural marketplace by all Black artisans. BLK+GRN curates products that are sold in categories like skincare, home, bath and body to meet the needs of wellness seekers who want to buy Black and live green. Through the creation of BLK+GRN, Dr. Kristian is tackling this issue head-on. She is an unshakable optimist who is passionate about helping women cultivate a lifestyle that’s free of artificial ingredients, toxins, and harmful chemicals. She believes that doing so is the only way to foster true happiness. In this episode, we dive into the importance of understanding what ingredients are in our body care products, and how doing so can have a profound impact on our health. She and her team are leading their community into a Toxic-Free 2019 when it comes to products, mindset, and lifestyle. In a post-Obama era where Blacks Americans are proclaiming their blackness now more than ever, it's disappointing to see Black-owned businesses shy away from serving their own people. What mainstream brands do so intently with Eurocentric brand messaging and imagery - Black businesses steer clear of for fear of "limiting themselves" if they focus solely on Black audiences. Storyteller Amber Williams is at the forefront of efforts to dispel this myth of limitation by pushing Black businesses towards more sophisticated-unapologetic branding. Her brand storytelling agency PunkyFlair teaches Founders and CEOs how to improve their sales through stories built around their true customers. Amber has crafted brand language for Armani, CVS, The U.S Olympics, and now uses her talents to service black-owned startups such as Camille Rose Naturals, Heat Free Hair, and Shea Radiance. Amber's aim is to shift the idea from merely "buying Black" to "serving Black," and she would love to share it with your listeners to transform their brand messaging. DURING THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSSED: Where to start when crafting your brand story Improving your sales through your story How to be unapologetically Black in your branding Why not targeting the Black community could be hurting your business Thank you so much for listening!
