When black people ask for discounts just know they don't have any money and they might not pay
Money circulates nearly an unlimited number of times in white neighborhoods, but only once in African-American communities, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth. On this episode, we ask: how can we keep the Black dollar circulating in Black communities for longer? First, we hear from Bernard Bronner, President and CEO of Bronner Bros., the Black, family-owned beauty company behind the annual Bronner Bros. Hair Show. After losing their best-selling hair care product because they didn't manufacture it themselves, the Bronners recognized the importance of ownership for sustaining not only the company, but the broader Black community. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with author and activist Maggie Anderson, who embarked on a year-long journey to only buy Black. Through her lived experience and supporting data, Maggie unpacks the historical and ongoing factors that prevent Black dollars from circulating through the Black community. And she highlights opportunities that exist for Black entrepreneurs and consumers to reclaim the power of their dollar. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. In order for us to reach the mountaintop of self-sufficiency, it'll take a TREMENDOUS amount of resources to complete the task. History has shown us that our blind reliance on the government to allocate the necessary monies to our coffers to sustain our neighborhoods either leads to some form of miscommunication or blatant misappropriation. But there is ONE ironclad, foolproof and guaranteed way that we African-Americans can ensure that we achieve the self-sustenance that we so richly deserve. If we can FINALLY pull this off, I believe it will give us the financial and political capital necessary to make demands that could reinforce our positioning with American institutions for generations to come. Buying Black is a movement, not a moment. The resurgence of Black Lives Matter has shed light into the lack of availability there is to shop Black-owned brands. While retailers were quick to react and place these products in stores, there's an educational and relational element that shouldn't be ignored to ensure these voices are continuously heard.Despite the demand for more diverse products, Black brands have historically been left out of the wider beauty conversation. The clear lack of shelf space is now being challenged by Aurora James' 15% pledge. Sephora, Macy's and Vogue have all committed to the pledge, but this is only the beginning. One creator who's making headway in this space is Julian Addo. In October 2017, Julian saw a gap in the premium haircare market and introduced gender-neutral Adwoa Beauty to the world for all hair textures including kinky hair. It’s Christmas time and rumor has it you should be supporting black businesses but do ALL black businesses deserve your support? 2020 was the year of “Black Lives Matter” and “buy black” and while most businesses blossomed, thrived and built strong lasting bonds with customers and communities others tanked. Unprofessionalism gets you no where, neither does over charging, having a nasty attitude or poor demeanor, selling used/worn clothes, lumpy cakes, cancelling appointments, failing to be attentive, rendering poor services, selling/serving burnt or undercooked food and a long list of other unbecoming behavior for business professionals. This episode gives classic examples of things that make you wanna say “support my a%!”
