We dig into culture and identity this episode! Morg is African American-born to Philadelphia Negroes - shout out to W.E.B. DuBois! Shan was born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents - wah gwan! We're both black. Morg's heritage is not culturally Jamaican, however. Shan's heritage is not culturally African-American, however. We were inspired by an article entitled, "About Blackness, Africanness and When It’s Enough" by Nigerian-born Luvvie Ajayi of Awesomely Luvvie blog and Jesus and Jollof podcast. This is going to get interesting. But first! Let's define some terms: Ethnicity: the fact or state of belonging to a social group/ phenotype that has a common national, cultural tradition. Heritage: historical/generational context and legacy -- per example, "folklore." Culture: the customary beliefs, social forms, cuisine, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. Nationality: country(ies) of citizenship. Race: a nebulous concept likely introduced by a eugenics/human biodiversity fanatic who at some point clustered humans by their phenotype -- meaning by similarities in bodily features/characteristics and skin color. Hopefully this episode helps articulate the cultural nuances of those of us who code-switch like we breathe air. We see you Naomi Osaka! We see you Charlize Theron! We see you Mila Kunis! We see you Cardi B! We see you Nicki Minaj! We see you Michelle Obama! Recorded Wednesday, August 29, 2018. *Note: We had to cut out our Doja Cat segment due to technical difficulties, but we acknowledge she surely arrived and is PROBLEMATIC (theme lately for literally everyone without a publicist) and makes dope beats and cute bops. So basically we welcome Azealia Banks Part II to trash culture,

This week we’re continuing the You Deserve More series in acknowledgment of Women’s Equal Pay Day. Each year, I lead thousands of women through 20 principles that help them use their God-given gifts to earn more money. (Learn more at iwillearnmore.com) Many of the women I know struggle with the fact that they don’t get the same respect as men. We know that’s true, because we can see it in how we get paid. When you find out that you are getting paid less for the same thing someone else is doing, it can be a shock. Most people keep quiet. They might be too upset to say anything. They may be afraid that it will tarnish their reputation if they speak up. The truth is, someone needs to speak up. That someone should be you, because you’re not the only one going through these things. Standing up for yourself will create a domino effect. When others hear you speak up, it will give them the strength to do the same. Equality starts with you. On this episode of Redefining Wealth, I have such a sensational guest who knows all too well the importance of this: Luvvie Ajayi Luvvie is an award-winning writer and digital strategist who thrives at the intersection of comedy, technology and activism. A twelve-year blogging veteran, she's the voice behind the respected and hilarious AwesomelyLuvvie.com, where she covers all things pop culture with razor sharp commentary and wit. Her first book, I’m Judging You, was a New York times bestseller. She’s also an amazingly powerful, and inspirational, speaker. She sat down on this episode and shared a time when she was treated unfairly, financially, at a speaking engagement just because she is a black woman. What adds insult to injury is that they reached out to her because of her fame and popularity. We also discussed the importance of pushing through your fears, and how you can build the best relationships right from the get got. Hint: You don’t start by selfishly asking for something! I know this is going to be an interview you take a lot away from. Get your pen and paper ready and then download this episode to learn how you can achieve the success you want and get the equality you deserve!

It's her first book and I'm very excited for it. The book has humorous essays that dissect our cultural obsessions and calls out bad behavior in our increasingly digital, connected lives. A little bit more about Luvvie... she's the voice behind the very popular blog, AwesomelyLuvvie.com where she covers all things pop culture. Luvvie also has a passion for social justice and shoes so in 2009 she co-founded The Red Pump Project to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. She serves as the nonprofit's Executive Director. Luvvie also is a sought-after speaker speaking at conferences like TEDxColumbiaCollegeChicago, SXSW and numerous others. She's also contributes to TheGrio.com and Vulture. In the interview we discuss is there such a thing as having too much money? Luvvie and I debate this. She also shares why she thinks giving back should be an obligation not an option. Plus, the deleted pages from her new book that have to do with doing better with our MONEY! What’s it like to be a 13-year seasoned blogger in the age of Instagram and Snapchat Influencers? On this episode I sit down for a conversation with Luvvie Ajayi to talk Branding 101. Luvvie is is a writer, digital strategist and creator of entertainment and humor blog AwesomelyLuvvie.com. As a fellow writer and avid blogger, I’ve always been inspired by Luvvie’s journey to full-time entrepreneur. She started her blog after peer pressure from friends who recognized her talent. After starting as a casual blogger, she slowly increased to blogging more than once a week. Three years in, she was working a 9 to 5 then blogging from 7 to 9 like a true side hustler. Though she was getting paid zero dollars, her first blogging award in 2009 made her realize maybe she was on to something. The rest, as they say, is history. Now Luvvie is getting ready to debut her first book, called I’M JUDGING YOU: The Do Better Manual, which is available on September 16 (or earlier if you pre-order). FYI, I talked to Luvvie a few months ago for a Q&A before I launched my podcast. There we covered more of her background and how she got started. Check out part one here: then tune in to the episode. On this episode we discuss: Why you shouldn’t be so consumed with the idea of you being a brand Why you need to be so good they can’t ignore you How to make sure you’re prioritizing solid content over marketing How to negotiate with brands once you get to that level The real deal with how she approaches brand partnerships and her certified deal breakers MORE FROM LUVVIE: I’m Judging You AwesomelyLuvvie Awesomely Techie MORE FROM NICAILA: SideHustlePro.co Side Hustle Pro Community CONNECT WITH US ON INSTAGRAM: Side Hustle Pro – @sidehustlepro Luvvie – @luvvie #SideHustlePro
