In this episode, we delve into what unites far-right groups in Europe and how they have been capitalising on cultural tools like social media and aesthetics to particularly target and successfully recruit young men and women. We hear from Michael Colborne, a journalist and researcher with Bellingcat, an investigation journalism organisation based in the Netherlands. His work focuses on the far right where he oversees and leads investigations and trains journalists in digital investigative techniques. Tune into episode 8 now! Hosted on Acast. In our first episode of 2024, Bellingcat's Michael Colborne and Kolina Koltai spoke to Dr. Kathleen Blee. A sociologist at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Blee has spent decades researching far-right movements in the United States, and spoke with us about the often-underdiscussed roles of culture and emotion on the far right. She is the co-author of “Out of Hiding: Extremist White Supremacy and How it Can Be Stopped” published by Routledge in 2024.
On Thursday morning, March 2, a few dozen armed men crossed over from Ukraine and raided two small towns in the Russian border region of Bryansk. The militants — described as “Ukrainian saboteurs” in hurried Russian news reports and later identified as soldiers in the so-called Russian Volunteer Corps — posed for some pictures, recorded a few breathless videos, and retreated back into Ukraine in short order. Conflicting reports followed about clashes with the incursion group: the Russian authorities said a couple of motorists were killed, but there are some odd inconsistencies in the footage later released by the Federal Security Service, while the militants themselves say they got into a shootout in one town but didn't see anyone killed. The March 2 incursion itself is fairly underwhelming, and it's hardly the first of its kind in the Bryansk area, where Russia's border with Ukraine is notoriously hard to defend. What makes the raid stand out is the leader of the group behind it: Denis Nikitin, a Russian neo-Nazi with a long history of far-right activism across Europe and especially, most recently, inside Ukraine. For more about Nikitin and the Russian Volunteer Corps, The Naked Pravda spoke to journalist Michael Colborne, who heads the Bellingcat Monitoring Project and authored the 2022 book From the Fires of War: Ukraine's Azov Movement and the Global Far Right. Timestamps for this episode: (3:56) What is the Russian Volunteer Corps and who is Denis Nikitin? (13:49) What is Denis Nikitin's ideology? (20:19) The ties between the Russian Volunteer Corps and Ukraine's Armed Forces (24:23) Previous border incursions into the Bryansk region (30:57) Probably not a Russian false flag
Issues around the environment, ecology and climate change don't necessarily underpin much of the far right's activities around the globe these days. But is this going to be the case in the future? Bellingcat's Michael Colborne spoke with Sam Moore and Alex Roberts, the authors of ‘The Rise of Ecofascism: Climate Change and the Far Right.' (Polity, 2022), to understand how the far right understands and relates to nature and the environment, and what we can expect from the far right in the future amidst continued environmental degradation and the rising impacts of climate change.
For the final episode of the year, Alex and guest host Mark talk to Michael Colborne of Bellingcat Monitoring on investigating hate online, the expose of Rob Rundo, Azov, Putin's Russia and more.
Who is winning at the process of far right normalisation?
According to Vladimir Putin, he's on a quest to de-Nazify Ukraine. But what about the Nazis in his own backyard? Hell, what about the Nazis all over Central and Eastern Europe.Right now, the Azov Regiment in Ukraine is dominating the conversation. Pictures of the ultra nationalist group are circulating online and being used to justify Russia's invasion. But they aren't the only fascists in the area. Far from it. But it's complicated and Azov is part of a broad tapestry of Fascist movements in the region, including in Russia. Here to get into all this is Michael Colborne. Colborne is a journalist working at Bellingcat where he writes about extremist movements in Europe. He's written a lot about Azov, but his latest is about the fascists in Russia. The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has ordered Russian troops to cross the border into eastern Ukraine on what he claims is a “peacekeeping mission” in defence of the breakaway states of Donetsk and Luhansk. Western leaders have condemned the move as the beginning of an invasion and imposed a first round of sanctions on Moscow, which have been widely criticised as not being punitive enough.Emily Tamkin and Katie Stallard in Washington, DC are joined by Ido Vock in Berlin to discuss this dangerous new phase of the conflict, where China stands, and what might happen next. Then in You Ask Us, a listener asks if, retrospectively, we will see any difference between this invasion of Ukraine and the 2014 annexation of Crimea, and whether there are any lasting reprisals that would destabilise Putin or cause him to withdraw.Further reading:Jeremy Cliffe reports Russia's attack on Ukraine's Donbas is a grotesque parody of humanitarian intervention.Ido Vock on Putin ordering Russian troops into Ukraine.Andrew Marr on why London's response to Vladimir Putin is pathetically inadequate. Michael Colborne on why silence won't make the Ukrainian far right go away.Katie Stallard reports how Putin is confronting Ukraine and the West with a terrible choice.Paul Mason in Kyiv calls on the left to stand with Ukraine against Putin's aggression. FRY-DAY Journalism On Fire (J.O.F.) Gaslighting Roosters edition Ukrainian Factions Rogan Bongino Patriot Front WS Potter Wright Decision Snowflake Truckers Indigenous Canadians Police Brutality Trumplandia Boxes and Donations mess Wrap ups and ResistThis edition of FRY DAY burning Journalism podcast, is being recorded later on Saturday, while some roosters and planes overhead decide to get involved in the audio. I go with it, and continue on! No snowflakes here, folks. The theme is gaslighting and chaosClarity for the different factions in Ukraine, and i use my own reporting and research, and my own sources as well as articles, to discuss the various groups, and highlight yet again the Azov Movement. From this i dovetail into articles regarding white supremacist groups, and two p[broadcaster, Dan Bongino and Joe Rogan who in my opinion, should Know better, but prefer to spew ridiculous stuff that is not based in fact, which i mention is kind of a waste of formerly intelligent individuals. From this I go straight into the Potter-Wright court decision by an Asian judge, giving a white police officer a light sentence for the killing of a black youth, whose mother is white and father is black. The white mother's tears didn't seem to matter to the Asian judge who decided to side with the white police officer i go over all of the racial undertones, Jim Crow, chaos, psy-op and gaslighting in that entire scenario.I move on tho the Trucker Terrorists trucks being hauled off, the police crackdown, the dramatic tear gassing of some of the truckers who seemed to be acting quite dramatically to being treated just like any "Protester" or a domestic terrorist actually. I juxtapose this, against the backdrop of indigenous unrest in the country, and them being met with brutal beatings, an inference of the fact that the police would be allowed "To Cleanse" the area, and lethal force against them. Talking about some incidents, and a man ,who was actually a chief, who was brutally beaten to a pulp. I go on a small rant about how much the big bad truckers are acing like whiny snowflakes.Moving on to Trumplandia, we go over trump hauling off boxes of information and secret docs to Maralago, and Melania unable to drop off her blood money at a local school who said 'Not Today Fascist Barbie." Ok I said that.I then wrap up, have my normal rant and screed, and encourage everyone to resist.MICHAEL COLBORNE (Book on Ukraine AZOV Movement-recommended)https://www.amazon.com/Fires-War-Ukraines-Analyzing-Political/dp/3838215087WEBSITE-https://www.radicalrightanalysis.com/author/michael-colborne/ALL ARTICLES QUOTED ARE GIVEN PROPER ACCREDITATION AND COMPLY WITH COPYRIGHT LAW.#TPRBreakingNews #SupportLiberalPodcasts #WomenWithScissorsBreaking news intro
TRAITOR TUESDAY POPCORN EDITIONPROMOTED BOOK RECOMMENDhttps://www.amazon.com/Fires-War-Ukraines-Analyzing-Political/dp/3838215087From the Fires of War: Ukraine's Azov Movement and the Global Far Right (Analyzing Political Violence) Paperback – March 1, 2022 Michael Colborne (Author)From its roots in revolution and war, Ukraine's Azov movement has grown from a militia of fringe far-right figures and football hooligans fending off Russian-backed forces into a multi-pronged social movement that has become the envy of the global far right. In this first English-language book on the Azov movement, Michael Colborne explains how Azov came to be and continues to exploit Ukraine's fractured social and political situation―including the only ongoing war on European soil – to build one of the most ambitious and dangerous far-right movements in the world.PODCASTReal story behind the babushka battalions in the Ukraine, and the Azov Movement, as well as deceptive use iof the story on the internet propaganda websites. A report from Buzzfeed , and a new book on the subject are discussed.Dovetailing into the Terrorist Trucker situation, and a cache of guns that was recovered, and the hacking of the funding website bankrolling the Truckers reveals certain donors, who are millionaires and billionaires. One doing philanthropy for the homeless and then backing the truckers who attacked a homeless shelter, to the tune of $90,000 thus bring my theme of radicalization into play. Touching on Charlie Kirk, Eminem, and the halftime NFL show kerfuffle from both sides, and a lot of the angst expressed by the tender feelings of snow-flaky White Supremacists.History of going against white folks who dare to support black folks, and my warning that conflating what Eminem is doing as wrong, becasue Colin Kaepernick has been punished, and Eminem was white so he could get away with it, are wrong minded, due to the history of going against those who support the Black cause. Warning these statements are "iffy", and can actually be coming from propaganda on the other side.I then dive into the Trumplandia fails, of Melania Trump and Donald, trump, and excellent efforts my Mr. Conway himself, to shed light on the Orange Fuehrers accountants ditching him as a client, and also discuss Melania's non existent charity and high tea event, using in my opinion some of the 14 words. Also touching on Josh Hawleys first raised Jan 6th insurrection Mug. Which is kinda ranty. He wants it to be filled with lib tears. I express the fact that my eyes are in fact quite dry and refer to him as a pig, affectionately to roil him.I was going to cover a story about a Democratic Candidate and shooting incident, but becasue this was a live podcast, I had some information in the middle of that, which had me stating I would report on that after some other details were more clear.I do my usual wrap ups, after that.Translation to come laterThank you for supporting my Journalism#TPRBreakingNews #SupportliberalPodcasts #WomenWithScissorsBreaking news intro
