A conversation with Damian Andrews of SHAIR.Care Podcast (Australia) in 2023.What's a “Russian Doll” (or is it called a Babushka) got to do with Sex, Porn, Love Addiction?I thought you would never ask!“I haven't bought into that nonsense “Big boys don't cry”, when I was growing up”. At least, I don't think so”!That guy called John Bowlby in the 1940's dared to put together some suppositions that I didn't like. How dare he put me in a box and think that he knows me. Yet, “Oh my goodness, that stuff he is talking about me; describes me. I don't like this. Anyway, I am a complex being made by God and only Sigmund Freud can unravel the complexities of me”. (This was my coping strategy that I used to avoid getting penetrated and having to go and see those busy-body counsellors and tell them about my growing up stuff, so they could sort me out). The inner child was curled up deep inside the Russian Doll, with layers of protection, to avoid people that I give my heart to, hurting me again. "Big boys don't cry". Therefore, grown up boys absolutely cannot cry. A man's man get's up, stop crying and whimpering and gets on with it. Stiff British lip stuff. (PS: Is that the upper or lower lip that is stiff. I always wondered!)What is the framework and straight jacket which society (which is us) has given men? Is it the right fit? If it isn't, how do we break out and re-invent ourselves? What baton? What generational/family script has been handed on to each of us?What is masculinity? What does it mean? Is it controversial to even ask the question? Too dangerous for me to even dare to begin to offer a 'take'. What does that mean for a progressive society?More questions than answers in this episode.Get some help from The Kairos Centre. See what you cannot see. Beverly Oliver Massegee "The Babushka Lady,"he Babushka Lady is an unknown woman present during the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy who might have photographed the events that occurred in Dallas's Dealey Plaza at the time President John F. Kennedy was shot. Her nickname arose from the headscarf she wore, which was similar to scarves worn by elderly Russian women (бабушка – babushka – literally means "grandmother" or "old woman" in Russian). The Babushka Lady was seen to be holding a camera by eyewitnesses and was also seen in film accounts of the assassination.[1][2] She was observed standing on the grass between Elm and Main streets and is visible in the Zapruder film as well as in the films of Orville Nix,[3] Marie Muchmore, and Mark Bell[4] (44 minutes and 47 seconds into the Bell film: even though the shooting had already taken place and most of her surrounding witnesses took cover, she can be seen still standing with the camera at her face). After the shooting, she crossed Elm Street and joined the crowd that went up the grassy knoll. She is last seen in photographs walking east on Elm Street. Neither she, nor the film she may have taken, has yet been positively identified; no known photograph with her in frame captured her face because in all cases she was either facing away from the camera, or (as in the case of the Zapruder film) had her face obscured by her own camera.Contentshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_BugliosiBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
The Babushka Phenomenon: Older Women and the Political Sociology of Ageing in Russia (UCL Press, 2025) by Dr. Anna Shadrina examines the social production of ageing in post-Soviet Russia, highlighting the role of grandmothers as primary caregivers due to men's traditional estrangement from family life. This expectation places grandmothers, or babushkas, in a position where they prioritise childcare and housework over their careers, making them unpaid family carers reliant on the state and their children. Dr. Shadrina situates older Russian women's experiences within the post-Soviet redefinition of the nation, analysing their portrayal in popular media and biographical narratives of women aged 60 and over in Russia and the UK. It addresses class and racial disparities, noting how some women outsource family duties to less qualified women, and emphasises age as a significant but overlooked axis of social inequality. From a feminist perspective, the book explores citizenship as both a status and a practice of inclusion and exclusion. By focusing on older women's rights to participate in private and public spheres, it discusses the new social inequalities that emerged after the USSR's collapse. Despite prioritising others' interests, older Russian women actively engage in economic citizenship, though their struggles for recognition are often excluded from formal economy and politics. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. I was sad I never was able to interview Jon James Smith after he wrote and directed “Last Orders,” a horror short that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2022. Thankfully Jon's work returned to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2025 with a new film, “Babushka,” and again he took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror. And even better, Jon flew all the way from London for the interview (well the festival) and that meant we had plenty of time to do our in-person 4Qs follow up! This is a special podcast for me. Why? Jon James Smith wrote and directed “Last Orders,” a horror short that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2022. As a London resident, Jon was not able to attend the festival but I made a point to tell him of how well-received the film had been. I invited Jon onto the podcast then and he held off for a great reason. He did not want to Zoom in from London for the interview, he wanted to do it in person. Thankfully Jon's work returned to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2025 with a new film, “Babushka,” and again he took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror. But Jon was able to attend FI-LA's 10th Anniversary Edition and, even though I prefer to do nothing the day after a festival wraps... how could I say no to having Jon over to the house to record a podcast? I hope you all enjoy listening to our conversation as much as we enjoyed having it. And a huge thank-you to Jon for being the kind of person who follows through on his intentions with actions! Alas, this week plague has struck the House of Raven (well, the flu has, at least) and Eleanor is laid-up feeling decidedly unwell. So, we have dipped our beaks into the vault, and pecked out a seasonally-appropriate Patreon Exclusive episode to plug the gap!Originally released last December, we start the episode off with a chat about the common characteristics of 'Snow Queens' or 'Snow Witches', including lots of examples, from Babushka and La Befana to Mother Holda and Gryla, as well as Snow Goddesses like Skadi and Chione. After drawing some common threads together, and discussing some problematic issues with many representations of Snow Queens, it's then onto the main event: Martin's telling of his take on "The Snow Queen" - after which we have a little chat about the story and distinctions made between our version and that of Hans Christian Anderson. We really hope you enjoy it, and fingers-crossed that a) Martin doesn't catch 'the lurg' as well, and b) Eleanor feels well enough to record this week's Magic and Medicines episode about the Zodiac - after which we should be back on track! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In this episode, the boys have another of their popular Dynamite Conspiracy episodes, where they discuss who was the "Babushka Lady" present during the assassination of President John F Kennedy? Why did she never make herself known to the authorities despite others coming forward and falsely claiming to be her? Was she involved in the assassination of the president is that why she has never been found? What are your thoughts on these topics? Do you agree with Tony and Tayo on this? Or do you have other thoughts?Links used during the show:-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX58vrL5ZiA-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AmP_ELZ7eU-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MKUltra-https://www.muckrock.com/news/archives/2017/dec/19/mkruby/-https://crberryauthor.com/2015/06/11/babushka-lady-and-umbrella-man-the-enduring-mystery-of-the-unidentified-jfk-witnesses/Pictures referenced are found on our Facebook page-https://www.facebook.com/thetnttalkshowTune in and listen to the discussion - and please let us have your thoughts on these subjects.Although we much prefer effusive praise
Interview by Damian Andrews of SHAIR.care: What it means to be a man (5)What's a “Russian Doll” (or is it called a Babushka) got to do with Sex, Porn, Love Addiction?I thought you would never ask!“I haven't bought into that nonsense “Big boys don't cry”, when I was growing up”. At least, I don't think so”!That guy called John Bowlby in the 1940's dared to put together some suppositions that I didn't like. How dare he put me in a box and think that he knows me. Yet, “Oh my goodness, that stuff he is talking about me; that describes me. I don't like this. Anyway, I am a complex being made by God and only Sigmund Freud can unravel the complexities of me”. (This was my coping strategy that I used, to avoid getting penetrated and having to go and see those busy-body counsellors and tell them about my growing up stuff, so they could sort me out!) What does your Resistance and Reluctance look like? The inner child (of me) was curled up deep inside the Russian Doll, with layers of protection, to avoid people I give my heart to, hurting me again. Jennifer Robertson is a fertility coach and has helped women all over the world transform their mindset and take back control of their life in the midst of infertility. She is also author of The Injustice of Infertility, a deeply inspiring and raw account of her own seven-year fertility journey. Throughout her own fertility journey, Jen discovered that her old ways of pushing and working hard weren't serving her. She is now using the lessons learned along the way to develop programs and support women throughout their journey to motherhood - from the moment they start trying to conceive, until they hold their baby in their arms. In this week's episode, we discuss emotional validation, when it's okay to ask someone about their procreation plans, how we force ourselves to shrink down to not make others uncomfortable hearing about our fertility struggles, and (I'm stealing this, I've already told Jen!) unpacking the Babushka doll that is the all-consuming nature of trying to conceive. Blessings and welcome to you all, beautiful souls. In this episode of the Witchcast, Lucy watches (through tears) Agora, a film about Hypatia of Alexandria, a legendary Pagan (or was she?) scholar and teacher accused of Witchcraft, murdered by Christians in ancient Alexandria. Called by some the first Pagan martyr, the Witchcast explores Hypatia's brilliance, her neo-Platonic philosophy, her discoveries, and the catastrophic rift between pagans - or polytheists - and Christians in the late Roman Empire. Lucy analyses the film's depiction of this remarkable woman, searching for truths about the Alexandrian age, the dreadful loss of the knowledge within that city's famed Library, and how one bad bishop can change the course of western history. Then, well. You can see there is a huge rediscovery of Kate Bush taking place at the moment. Babushka tik-toks, Withering Heights dance days and the revival of Running Up That Hill - or a Deal with God, thanks to Stranger Things. But did you know that one of Kate Bush's songs is Magick in practice? Lucy shares a unique song from Kate Bush that is actually a true invocation of four Archangels that you can play to protect and shield yourself. Kate had an enduring relationship with a spiritual healer, whose crone-like wisdom and voice appears throughout her album, the Red Shoes. We move then to Lucy offering readings for listeners, with some very tricky questions answered by the cards, PLUS a reading for YOU. All this, and gorgeous pagan music - this is a powerful episode.Thankyou to Shayne, to Georgia, and to all the supportive and generous Patreon Family for their ongoing support, which is immensely appreciated.
