Volgens Bellingcat-oprichter Eliot Higgins is onze democratie in gevaar. Vragen, opmerkingen of suggesties? Chris speaks with intelligence historian and journalist Trevor Barnes about the Bulgarian spy ring trial at the Old Bailey, one of the most significant espionage cases in the UK since the Cold War. Barnes attended the proceedings and walks Chris through how a network of Bulgarian nationals, allegedly directed remotely by fugitive Wirecard executive Jan Marsalek from Moscow, was tasked with surveilling journalists and dissidents across Europe — including Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev — in operations that prosecutors suggested could have enabled kidnapping or assassination. The case cracked open after a US intelligence tip-off, was jointly handled by MI5 and the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, and ultimately turned on roughly 200,000 encrypted Telegram messages. Barnes unpacks what the trial revealed about Russia's growing reliance on proxy networks and criminal cut-outs in place of traditional deep-cover officers, and what it signals for Western counter-intelligence in an era of mounting state-sponsored threats.Subscribe and share to stay ahead in the world of intelligence, global issues, and current affairs.Read Trevor's article about the trial: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/trevorwbarnes_britain-russia-bulgarian-activity-7440003523754459136-PscmConnect with Trevor on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trevorwbarnes/Support Secrets and SpiesBecome a “Friend of the Podcast” on Patreon for £3/$4: https://www.patreon.com/SecretsAndSpiesBuy merchandise from our shop: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/60934996Buy us a coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/secretsandspiesSubscribe to our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVB23lrHr3KFeXq4VU36dgFor more information about the podcast, check out our website: https://secretsandspiespodcast.comConnect with us on social media Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/secretsandspies.bsky.socialInstagram: https://instagram.com/secretsandspiesFacebook: https://facebook.com/secretsandspiesSpoutible: https://spoutible.com/SecretsAndSpiesFollow Chris and Matt on Bluesky:https://bsky.app/profile/chriscarrfilm.bsky.socialhttps://bsky.app/profile/mattfulton.netSecrets and Spies is produced by Films & Podcasts LTD: https://filmsandpodcasts.co.uk/Music by Andrew R. TESTO DELL'ARTICOLO ➜ https://www.bastabugie.it/8450VALANGHE DI EURO DALL'UE AI MEDIA PER FABBRICARE IL CONSENSOdi Lorenza Formicola C'è un miliardo di euro che si muove nell'ombra dei palazzi di vetro di Bruxelles, con un unico obiettivo: fabbricare il consenso.

Can democracies still function when truth itself is destabilised – and what will it take to restore public trust? Around the world, democracies are being outpaced by a rapidly evolving information crisis. AI-generated deepfakes, automated propaganda, and weaponised synthetic media are now flooding public discourse faster than institutions can respond. What the world is witnessing is a runaway surge of falsehoods, which is turbo-charging a deeper collapse in our democratic capacity to verify what's real, deliberate together, and hold power to account. At this pivotal moment, Eliot Higgins, founder of Bellingcat, is bringing forward a new framework for understanding and repairing the deeper democratic fractures beneath the disinformation crisis. This event marks the first public discussion of that work. Eliot is joined by award- winning investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr – campaigner for a free and accountable press – for a timely discussion in collaboration with Media Revolution campaigners and early adopters of the Bellingcat ARC framework. Together they will examine how AI is supercharging already established disinformation networks – and what new civic, investigative, and institutional infrastructures are needed to rebuild shared reality. The Stringer Documentary & the Napalm Girl Mystery – A Deep Dive into Photojournalism Controversy Published on 10 Frames Per Second Blog – Your go‑to source for photojournalism insight Table of Contents What Is The Stringer? Meet the Key Players – Gary Knight & Bao Nguyen Why the Napalm Girl Photo Matters Forensic Evidence: The Road‑Testing of the Iconic Shot Industry Reaction – Backlash, Bans, and the “Wagon‑Circling” Culture The Hidden History of Vietnamese & Local Freelance Photographers How to Watch The Stringer and Join the Conversation Takeaway: What This Means for Photojournalism Today 1. What Is The Stringer? The Stringer is a newly released documentary (Netflix, 2024) that investigates the authorship of the world‑famous “Napalm Girl” photograph taken in Vietnam, 1972. Core premise: The film follows journalist Gary Knight and director Bao Nguyen as they trace a decades‑old secret held by a Vietnamese stringer‑photographer, Nguyễn Thành Nghệ (Wintan Nei). Format: A blend of on‑the‑ground interviews, archival footage, and forensic road‑testing that reconstructs the exact location, timing, and line‑of‑sight of the iconic image. Why it matters: The image is one of the most published photographs in history and is universally credited to Associated Press staff photographer Nick Ut. The documentary questions that credit, shaking a cornerstone of photojournalistic mythology. 2. Meet the Key Players – Gary Knight & Bao Nguyen Person Role Why They're Important Gary Knight Founder of the VII Foundation, mentor, and documentary “connective tissue.” Provides insider knowledge of the photojournalism world, contacts, and credibility that anchors the investigation. Bao Nguyen Director of The Stringer Chose to frame the story as a journey, not just a series of talking‑heads, and insisted on a central narrator (Gary) to guide viewers. Carl Robinson Former AP Vietnamese‑language photo editor (local hire). His 2022 email sparked the whole investigation; his memories and documents are a primary source. Horst Fass Senior AP photographer in Vietnam (the “gatekeeper” of the image). His decision to run the picture on the wire is central to the credit controversy. Nguyễn Thành Nghệ (Wintan Nei) Vietnamese stringer who claimed to have taken the shot. The film's “secret” – his testimony and forensic evidence challenge the accepted narrative. Nick Ut AP staff photographer historically credited for the photo. The focal point of the debate; his name appears on every caption of the image. 3. Why the Napalm Girl Photo Matters Iconic status: Frequently cited in textbooks, museums, and peace‑activist campaigns. Cultural impact: Symbolizes the horrors of the Vietnam War and the power of visual storytelling. Professional legacy: The credit has shaped career trajectories, awards (Pulitzer, etc.), and AP's brand. If the credit shifts, we must reconsider how many other war‑zone images were attributed, potentially rewriting a large part of photojournalism history. 4. Forensic Evidence: The Road‑Testing of the Iconic Shot The documentary's most compelling section is the road‑forensics – a scientific recreation of the moment the photo was taken. Methodology: Researchers drove the exact route described by Wintan Nei, measuring distances, angles, and terrain features. Key Findings: Line‑of‑sight analysis shows the photographer would have been ~150 meters from the burning road—far beyond the reach of a 35 mm lens used by Ut. Shadow & lighting study matches the sun angle on July 29, 1972, which aligns with Wintan Nei's timeline, not Ut's. Camera metadata (Pentax vs. Nikon) – expert testimony confirms Ut's camera was not a Pentax, the model allegedly used by Wintan Nei. Independent verification: World Press Photo hired a former Bellingcat investigator, and INDEX a Paris-based research group. French photographer Tristan da Cunha corroborated the forensic report.  Cunha also worked with AD Coleman on his Robert Capa investigation (Ep. 35) These data points form the strongest case in the film that Nick Ut did not take the photograph. 5. Industry Reaction – Backlash, Bans, and the “Wagon‑Circling” Culture Immediate pushback: Numerous journalists launched letter‑writing campaigns to film festivals and employers, asking for the documentary to be removed. Attempted bans: Some media outlets threatened to fire staff who publicly supported the film. Defensive stance: Many veteran photographers argued that the film attacks “iconic” heroes and undermines the profession's reputation. Key quote from Gary Knight: “Journalists don't ban books or films they haven't read. Our job is to investigate, not to protect mythologies.” The controversy illustrates the “wagon‑circling” phenomenon—protecting revered figures at the expense of truth. 6. The Hidden History of Vietnamese & Local Freelance Photographers The documentary spotlights a systemic issue: local photographers' contributions have been consistently erased. No Vietnamese names appear in a May 1975 Time editorial thank‑you list, despite hundreds of local staff. Many local photographers sold film to AP, NBC, or CBS, but credits always went to Western staff. Examples of overlooked talent: Dang Van Phuoc – AP's most prolific photographer during the war (lost an eye in the field) *needs his own wikipedia entry. Catherine Leroy, Francoise Demulder, Kate Webb – Women who covered Vietnam but remain under‑recognized. Result: A distorted, Western‑centric narrative of war photography that marginalizes the very people who captured the ground truth. 7. How to Watch The Stringer and Join the Conversation Platform Availability Tips Netflix Global (over 100 countries) Use the search term “The Stringer”; enable subtitles for multilingual audiences. Film festivals Sundance 2024 (screened), Frontline Club (London) Look for Q&A sessions with Gary Knight or Bao Nguyen. Social media #TheStringer on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook Follow the hashtag for updates, behind‑the‑scenes clips, and scholarly debate. What you can do: Read the forensic report (available on the Seven Foundation website). Share the story with your photography community to spark discussions on credit attribution. Support local photographers by following their work on platforms like Vietnam Photo Archive or Fotodoc Center. 8. Takeaway: What This Means for Photojournalism Today Transparency is essential. Photo agencies must disclose the full chain of custody for images, especially in conflict zones. Credit deserves rigorous verification. The Napalm Girl case shows that even decades later, new evidence can overturn long‑standing attributions. Elevate local voices. Recognizing Vietnamese, Cambodian, Bosnian, Serbian, Ukrainian, and other native photographers enriches the historical record and promotes equity. Forensic tools are now part of journalism. Road‑testing, GIS mapping, and metadata analysis are valuable assets for future investigations. Bottom line: The Stringer isn't just a documentary—it's a catalyst urging the photojournalism community to re‑examine its myths, honor the unsung creators, and adopt a more accountable, data‑driven approach to storytelling.

Algorithms don't drive the truthAmol Rajan speaks to Eliot Higgins, founder of the open-source investigative organisation Bellingcat, as the world grapples with the growing threat posed by misinformation and conspiracy theories being deliberately spread online. Founded in 2014, Bellingcat is an independent investigative collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists from around the world. The organisation uses open-source research methods, which involve analysing publicly-available data that can be accessed and used without any special permissions or restrictions. It has investigated a variety of subjects of public interest, including the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine to police violence in Colombia and the illegal wildlife trade in the UAE. Higgins argues that the need for organisations like Bellingcat has never been more important, as conspiracy theories flood the internet and some people avoid mainstream news outlets altogether. It's Monday, June 9th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Myanmar ceasefire extended to June 30 despite consistent violations The military junta ruling Myanmar announced last week that it would extend a temporary ceasefire, originally established in early April, to June 30, reports International Christian Concern. A massive earthquake struck the country in late March, killing 3,700 people and necessitating extensive relief work in hard-hit civilian areas.  Opposition militias agreed to the extended ceasefire, creating hope for improved humanitarian conditions in June despite regular junta violations of the ceasefire up to now. In the first three weeks of the ceasefire alone, the U.N. tracked at least 172 junta attacks, including airstrikes and artillery assaults.  The open-source research group Bellingcat documented that at least 22 villages were bombed by the junta in violation of the ceasefire agreement.  Senator Cruz wants June to be “Life” month because Roe was overturned Last Thursday, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas introduced a resolution to designate June as Life month to honor the anniversary of the Supreme Court's monumental Dobbs decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022. CRUZ: “Three years ago, the Supreme Court made an historic advance in the cause of life in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.  The court overturned Roe v. Wade, a flawed decision that for nearly 50 years enshrined one of the most disturbing notions in our constitutional history: that the Constitution somehow protects the right to end the life of an unborn child. “The fact is, Roe had nothing to do with the Constitution. It was invented whole cloth. It was the product of judicial activism, nine justices legislating from the bench. And that dangerous path took decades to correct. “Thankfully, in 2022, Roe was overturned.  Dobbs did not impose any new policies from the bench. Instead, the task of protecting life falls where it always should have been -- not in the hands of unelected judges, but in the hands of the American people.” Canadian pastor imprisoned for objecting to Drag Queen Story Hour Calgary Pastor Derek Reimer, a street preacher who has had the courage to object to drag queen story hours for children in libraries, is back in jail in Alberta, Canada, reports the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The conviction came after Reimer confronted a library manager over a Drag Queen Story Hour event, reports Rebel News. Wearing a GoPro, he walked into the library, spoke to a few attendees, and eventually found the room where the event was taking place. He told the manager the program was "pervert grooming" and warned, "We're going to make your name public and hold you accountable." Security escorted him out peacefully. Later, he posted the video online — along with the manager's name, workplace, and the library phone number — calling on viewers to voice their opposition. Only one person reportedly contacted her, but the librarian testified that she became afraid of what might happen next. She shut down her social media accounts and said Reimer's words left her anxious and fearful. The 38-year-old pastor was arrested and accused of breaching the house arrest condition of his sentence for simply participating in a public rally before his own court appearance. Pastor Reimer, who has now been jailed unjustly at the Calgary Remand Centre for over a month, has been treated badly. The judicial officials have blocked all visitors from seeing him, even the ones who were pre-approved. The only ones allowed to visit Pastor Reimer are his wife, Mona, and their baby. Derek's lawyer, Andrew Mackenzie, hopes that media attention on Reimer's unfair treatment will lead to a more positive outcome. Concerned Christian friends have been gathering for a rally of support at the Remand Centre every Sunday afternoon at 4:30pm, protesting Pastor Reimer's incarceration and bail denial. Please pray for justice to be served on Pastor Reimer's next court date on Monday, June 23rd. On  June 5th, Pastor Reimer posted Psalm 138:7 on his Facebook page.  It says, “Though I am surrounded by troubles, [God] You will protect me from the anger of my enemies, You reach out Your hand and the power of Your right hand saves me.” Learn more or donate to his legal defense at SavePastorDerek.com. The American Miracle movie tells story of former slaves fighting British The American Miracle movie debuts tonight in 1,000 theaters across America for three days only! Based on Michael Medved's book by the same name, it tells the story of God's hand in the founding of the United States. TESTIMONIAL 1: “I thought it was extraordinary just to see the hand of God on the United States of America. It's absolutely undeniable! The schools are doing everything they can to erase our history. We have an opportunity and an obligation to share the true history of the country.” Cameron Arnett, a black Christian actor known for films by the Kendrick Brothers like The Forge and Overcomer, said this. ARNETT: “I play Peter Salem. He gets introduced to George Washington as a hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill. What I love about this kind of stuff is that we are now unearthing a slew of black heroes that we weren't fortunate enough to grow up with, but that our children will be able to grow up with, because now the stories are being told.” Pastor Darnell Harper of New Covenant Temple was amazed. HARPER: “One of the aspects that touched me a lot was the African-American experience in the founding of our nation and in the battles that we fought, how there was a spirit of unity that we don't hear a lot about today.” The enthusiasm for The American Miracle movie is contagious. TESTIMONIAL 2: “Something that I've learned in the film tonight is that we cannot underestimate how great our God is and how powerful He is and how much He does govern the affairs of men.” Indeed, Daniel 4:17 says, “The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on Earth.” Go to www.AmericanMiracleMovie.com, watch the trailer, click on the Tickets tab, type in your zipcode, and purchase tickets for tonight, Tuesday or Wednesday since it's only in the theaters for three days. 5 reasons Diana in Glendale, Arizona likes The Worldview Diana Munday in Glendale, Arizona wrote me at Adam@TheWorldview.com.  She said “First, I know you and the founders to be followers of Jesus Christ and accountable to Him for what you read and write. Independent journalists Kit Klarenberg and Tim Norman have conducted significant investigations into the alleged 2018 assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal, a former Russian intelligence officer turned British spy, and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, England. The episode also covers the related death of Dawn Sturgess in nearby Amesbury, which was recently the subject of a UK inquiry. Skripal, who betrayed Russia for MI6 in the 1990s, was settled in Salisbury after a spy swap in 2010. On March 4, 2018, he and Yulia were found unconscious on a bench, allegedly poisoned by the nerve agent "novichok," which the British government attributed to Russian operatives. The official narrative claims this poison was smeared on Skripal's door, though inconsistencies—such as the delayed onset of symptoms, the survival of the Skripals, and lack of definitive evidence linking the agent to Russia—raise doubts about the UK government's story.Months later, Englishwoman Dawn Sturgess died after reportedly spraying herself with "novichok" from a sealed perfume bottle found by her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, prompting further accusations against Russia. However, the apparently sealed bottle and the inability of scientists to confirm the nerve agent's origin undermined the government's claims. The British narrative was shaky and possibly propped up by intelligence-linked entities like Bellingcat and the Institute for Statecraft's Integrity Initiative, which may have pushed disinformation. The recently concluded Sturgess Inquiry, designed to control the narrative, inadvertently exposed its weaknesses. To find out more about the people and music featured in today's episode, visit the Assassinations Podcast website, www.AssassinationsPodcast.com You can find Tim's work on the Propaganda in Focus website (https://propagandainfocus.com/author/h7_2q94aatnh5/) and UK Column (https://www.ukcolumn.org/writer/tim-norman), as well as on X.com @timtron2020Kit writes for The Grayzone website (https://thegrayzone.com/author/kit-klarenberg/), including on the Skripal/Sturgess case: https://thegrayzone.com/2025/01/13/british-inquiry-skripal-poisoning/. In a world overflowing with information, facts often fuel division rather than informed discussions, as individuals promote their own narratives. Technology, much like the runaway broom in Goethe's Sorcerer's Apprentice, often exacerbates the chaos instead of resolving it. But what if open-source information and intelligent technology could simplify complexities and illuminate the truth? Eliot Higgins, founder of Bellingcat, is striving to make this a reality. In this episode of New Thinking for a New World, Higgins shares how Bellingcat leverages online open-source investigations to separate fact from fiction and bring clarity to an increasingly tangled digital landscape.
