We hear from memories on the pitch with PBC rugby and in particular from one of the legendary figures of Pres, Munster and Irish rugby in the 1960's and 70's - the great Barry McGann who is also, as far as we know, the only Pres boy to line out against the Dutch football wizard, Johann Cruyff in a competitive international. We also revisit some sadder moments in PBC rugby history as Barry remembers Pat Barry and Noel Walsh recalls his death at Thomond Park in 1965. Ray Clarke who was present as a member of the Senior Cup team at training in Wilton on that fateful day in 1979 remembers Des Barry. To hear about the future of the school, Jack O Sullivan, Chairman of P.B.C. Board of Management reflects on his time at Pres while Michael Sexton outlines his role as CEO of the PBST and his vision for the school. This podcast is presented by PBC alumni George Hook and Ronan McAuliffe. It was produced by PBC teacher Éanna O'Loinsigh with Elaine Smith on sound and post production and piano composition by PBC student Liam Ring. Thank you to our contributors for sharing the stories and fond memories and to Presentation Brothers College Cork for their continued support. Hosted on Acast. However, what all three have in common is a focus on relationships. They start off with Michael Sexton's Everblue, a fantastical tale about two young adventurers who want to explore their world while at the same time avoiding the threats that are in pursuit. After that the guys discuss Handrava, a more realistic narrative set in Madagascar's capital city. It's author Rado R. captures the rhythms and flavors of his subject matter through both the dialogue and the visual layout of his scripting. Finally, Derek and Sean turn to a recently completed webcomic, Thom Zahler's Warning Label. As with the creator's previous works -- most notably Love and Capes, Long Distance, and Time and Vine -- the focus is on relationships and its unpredictable contours. This is yet another impressive work from Zahler, and one that will leave you, once again, with a warm and positive feeling.

The second of four panel discussions held in conjunction with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) residency at The Park Avenue Armory focused on “Directing Shakespeare." David Farr, the RSC's associate director and director of "King Lear" and "The Winter’s Tale" in the company's New York repertoire was joined by Arin Arbus, Associate Artistic Director of The Theater for a New Audience; Karin Coonrod, the founding director of the Arden Party Theater Company; and Mark Lamos, Artistic Director of the Westport County Playhouse. The panel, moderated by the artistic director of The Shakespeare Society, Michael Sexton, took on each individual's personal approach to directing, acting and speech, and included the admission that sometimes "stealing" from other directors is part of the process. Arin Arbus also echoed the remarks of the season's first two directors, Peter Brook and the RSC's Michael Boyd, in expressing belief in the power of hunches. Bon Mots David Farr on Shakespeare’s language: “His language gives you the psychology when you speak it. To get an actor to trust that is more and more unusual ... You are the words that you say. How can you be anything else?” Mark Lamos on conveying the verse through your body: “It’s not this uggabugga thing. You’ve got this great instrument: two feet, two legs, knees that bend, a butt. Breathe through it all. Let it happen.” Karin Coonrod on sussing out Shakespeare’s language: “...The visceral, the necessity, of speaking. ‘Why did you say that in that moment? Why are you full of contradictions?’ He gets more of the psychic cartography of our landscape than many.” Arin Arbus on initial hunches and notions: “It’s never happened to me where the things you find are in contradiction to what your initial instinct is. I don’t know what I would do in that situation. That would be... unfortunate.”

A thrilling look at two giants of the Elizabethan stage. Born in the same year as Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe died at the age of 29, having revolutionized English dramatic poetry with his dark, exuberant and wildly theatrical plays. The rivalry between these two great poets and Marlowe’s influence on Shakespeare’s work are the subjects of this evening, which features readings from the works of both playwrights and commentary by one of the world’s greatest Shakespeare scholars, James Shapiro (1599, Rival Playwrights and the forthcoming Contested Will). Performers include Obie Award winning actor John Douglas Thompson (Othello, The Emperor Jones), Red Bull Theater veteran Matthew Rauch (The Revenger’s Tragedy, Edward II), and Christopher Evan Welch (Festen, The Crucible). Directed by Michael Sexton. Recorded November 9, 2009 at the Kaye Playhouse.
