We have our first Alabama A&M alumnus on the show! Mickell Gladness drops in to share his inspiring journey in hoops for an episode that you will all enjoy. Sometimes you don't have to grow up being the star to get to where you want to be with this game and this episode is a great example of that.Gladness was never the star in basketball growing up. He went to Lawson CC out of high school before playing his last 3 years of college at Alabama A&M. He led the nation in blocks per game with a 6.3 average and set the NCAA record, surpassing David Robinson with 16 blocks in a single game. After not being selected in the 2004 NBA Draft, Gladness had to fight for an NBA roster spot where he played with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh in Miami, and a young Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the Golden State. Gladness went on to have great success overseas and even had a stop in Reno with our Reno Bighorns. Mickell shares great stories about Gerald Wallace, Jamario Moon, LeBron, D-Wade, Bosh, Luka Doncic, Dwight Howard, Reno, Mike Atkinson, experiences overseas, coaching and MUCH more!It was truly an honor having Mickell on the podcast and we can't thank him enough for his time. We are forever grateful for him taking the time to share his journey in basketball and all of the great things that he has in the works. Definitely a great listen for all of the young hoopers coming up!Thank you Mickell Gladness! You can find this episode on Apple, Spotify or any source for podcasts.Follow us on social media for news, updates and highlight reels!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc

In his first and only season playing basketball for Lawson State Community College, Gladness averaged modest numbers with 3.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game.[1] He transferred to Alabama A&M in 2005 where he played out the remaining three years of his college eligibility. At Alabama A&M, Gladness majored in business management.[2]  Mickell Gladness, appeared in 26 games and blocked 77 shots. It was in his junior season, however, that Gladness made a name for himself in college basketball. Playing in 30 games, Gladness led the nation in blocked shots per game at 6.3, with an adjusted-per-40 minutes rate of 7.9 bpg. He set an NCAA Division I single game record with 16 blocks against Texas Southern on February 24, 2007. No other player in Division I history has even recorded 15 blocks in a single game. Although he did not repeat as the NCAA season shots blocked leader, he did graduate having blocked 396 shots in only three seasons of Division I basketball, which was good enough to be in the all-time top 25 when he graduated. In his final two seasons, Gladness was a first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection. We talk NBA and taking his first over seas job. MG drops a lot of gems about the grind and sacrifices of being a pro ball player!

Sometimes you hear people speaking a different language like Spanish. You don't really understand the language but you know what they're saying. Other times you hear people speaking in Chinese and you don't have any grasp of what it is. When I listen to Monk play improvisation with a trio or quartet that's a whole different story. I really understand that this guy is thoughtful and he's not racing anybody Oddly enough when I listened to Monk, before I understood how his mind worked (mental illness). When I listen to his music I really understood where he was coming from. I may not have understood exactly what he was playing but I understood where it was coming from. That made a huge, huge impression on me, even playing the drums. If you look at Monk play you see what he's thinking and you can see what he's feeling and you hear it. It translates from his brain to his heart to his hands to you. That's the kind of improvisation for me. In the early days I played so much with Dave Spinozza because we grew up together and we were in bands together. If I wasn't playing in "Brethren" or Johnny Winter or Edgar Winters band than we were doing gigs at Mickell's. We played a ton of really groove and improv stuff. Somebody would write a song like Tropea (John) or Leon Pendarvis. We would play the head a couple of times and than Pendarvis would blow or Spinozza would blow or Will Lee would start going off. I liked it cause it didn't last too long. I'm thinking you say everything you need to say in a minute or two. Give them each a minute and let's move on to the next song and see what they have to say there. I didn't like it when songs lasted 15 minutes. I've heard guys say everything they need to say in 15 seconds and be very very good at it and move on. There was a guy I worked with out here in LA and I did some gigs with him. He was doing some gigs and he was calling me to play live with him. I've seen him play and I know he's great cause we did some sessions together. I said, "I'll do it but let's not do these solos that last 15-20 minutes." We rehearsed a little bit and so talked with him about it, he said, "yea man that sounds great." We got on stage and I swear to god I was yelling "stop, move on" in the middle of tunes and he never paid attention. I told him after, "this isn't fun for me, this isn't what I want to do. I don't want to go see a guy slamming cymbals, throwing sticks at the kit for 20 minutes on one song. That's what I felt I was doing. We were repeating phrases, we were going back and playing the same thing over again. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

In this particular episode, we review ‘Romeo Must Die' staring Aaliyah, Jet Li and somehow DMX makes it on the poster as well. It had been at least 15 years since I had watched the movie. I thought I was going to be thrilled to get nostalgic about my days but in fact, when we break down the film, we discussed some of the problematic things in the film that was much more prevalent in 2000. This also gave me an excuse to bust out my DMX impression. I didn't love it as much as I wanted to but I was completely captivated by Aaliyah's performance. If you are a fan of hers it's a must-watch but everyone else could probably live without it. Thanks for listening!

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys are back to discuss the 2015 indie film, Naz & Maalik. The film follows two young Black Muslim men who are stuck between the aspects of their religion, their romantic love for one another, and doing all of this is a post-9/11 world rife with stereotypes, assumptions, and harassment.  PREMISE: The film follows two high-school friends, Naz and Maalik, who spend a hot summer day bopping around Bedford-Stuyvesant hustling lottery tickets, as well as trying to make sense of their new—and highly secretive romantic—relationship. Over the course of the afternoon, the boys’ petty—though illicit—small-time scheming, along with their secretive dashes into alleyways to kiss, sets a high-strung FBI operative named Sarah Mickell on their tail. Having observed the teens' erratic and mountingly tense behavior, Mickell worries these two may, in fact, be radicalized Muslims, and surveils them as they go through their day. Naz and Maalik's carefree afternoon starts to darken when they realize they’ve given Mickell different alibis and the boys begin to panic about being uncovered by their families.
