It's time to give an old childhood classic a re-watch. After all that drama and sappiness last week, it was time to watch something more fun and since Anita has never seen this before and Chris was really hype to break out his double feature DVD, now seems like the perfect time. Anita scoffs at my "man-ness," Chris is shooting shots all over the place, we celebrate a plantation burning to the ground and Chris hits you with three quick reviews at the end of the show! Comprised of members from renowned hardcore bands Romeo Must Die, Dishonour the Crown, and Above All, Fates Messenger have spent the last twelve months showing the world just who they are and what they offer the metal scene. Which just so happens to be a whole lot of exciting and intense genre-bending noise. Fates Messenger aren't about reliving past glories, and the music they have put out so far proves that. Scars, Carved in Stone, Bonechapel, and most recently, They Walk Among Us, which comes with a video shot by acclaimed filmmaker and director, Shaun Hodson of Loki Films. Alongside these releases, Fates Messenger have been playing live and even made their London debut opening for Earthtone9 at their comeback show. They've accomplished more in a year than many do in five, and they're just getting started. Which is what we get into with vocalist Tony Maddocks. Sorry about the Audio- Beef and Rum Daddy had issues :/  Following the release of The Matrix in 1999, Hollywood saw an explosion of martial arts-focused action movies. Riding that wave was Chinese actor Jet Li, who made his first American-made film debut in Lethal Weapon 4 and went on to star in Kiss of the Dragon, Romeo Must Die and this dimension-hopping cop movie. Starring as both the hero and villain - the last two variants who have absorbed the energy from their murdered counterparts - Li faces off against himself with Jason Statham, Delroy Lindo, and Carla Gugino rounding out the cast. The film also tapped into a modern rock sound with Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, and Papa Roach. Directed by James Wong and co-written by Wong with Glen Morgan, the film was neither a box office nor critical hit. While it may be the best of the Matrix variants in this universe, in the end there can be only The One!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Welcome to Funky Pearls Radio, where the grooves never stop, and the legends live forever. Today, we're diving deep into the story of an icon whose voice etched a permanent mark on the soul of R&B music. This is the tale of Aaliyah - the Princess of R&B.Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Aaliyah was destined for stardom from a young age. Her smooth, sultry voice, combined with her undeniable charisma, set her on a path that would change the music industry forever.Aaliyah's journey into the spotlight began on the popular TV show "Star Search," where she captured hearts with her voice, even as a child. But it was her uncle, Barry Hankerson, and his ties to the music industry that introduced her to the producer who would help shape her sound - R. Kelly. Together, they released Aaliyah's debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number," in 1994, which was a commercial success, thanks to hits like "Back & Forth" and the title track itself. However, her career was not without controversy, including rumors of a marriage to R. Kelly, which both parties denied. Not to be defined by controversy, Aaliyah's second album, "One in a Million," marked a significant evolution in her music and image. Teaming up with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, she created a sound that was futuristic and utterly irresistible. The album was a masterpiece, featuring classics like "If Your Girl Only Knew" and "4 Page Letter." Aaliyah's style—a blend of street-smart cool and elegant sophistication—became iconic, influencing a generation of artists.Aaliyah's foray into acting with roles in "Romeo Must Die" and the announcement of her casting in "The Matrix Reloaded" showed her versatility and ambition. Her third album, "Aaliyah," released in 2001, continued to showcase her growth as an artist, with hits like "Try Again" and "More Than a Woman."Tragically, Aaliyah's bright future was cut short. On August 25, 2001, she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas, leaving the world mourning the loss of a tremendous talent. Aaliyah was more than just a singer; she was a trendsetter, a pioneer, and a beloved figure in the music world. Her influence continues to be felt today, as modern artists cite her as a major inspiration. Aaliyah's music lives on, a testament to her talent, her vision, and her unique place in music history. Here at Funky Pearls Radio, we remember Aaliyah not just for the music she gave us, but for the spirit she embodied - one of resilience, innovation, and timeless elegance. As we celebrate her life and legacy, let's keep her memory alive by embracing the qualities she stood for.Thank you for tuning in to Funky Pearls Radio. Keep the vibe alive, and remember, legends never die; they continue to inspire us every day. Stay tuned for more stories that weave the rich tapestry of music history.Hébergé par Ausha. Not the Bees! A THOUSAND AND ONE weiter. Geht also schon gut los, das neue Jahr. Wir hoffen, es ist auch nach Eurem Geschmack und wünschen und gute Unterhaltung. Bleibt gesund und gut drauf, viel Spaß im Kino oder auf der Couch und hasta luego.

Fasten your seatbelts, listeners: we're taking Clint's 2008 hit GRAN TORINO for a spin with racism expert (and native Michigander) Andrew Ti! This is a loaded one, gang: we talk about the film's lingering effect on the Hmong diaspora community, if it could have been made about any ethnic minority, whether the many slurs are intended to be funny, fatherly advice, and we try to sell Andrew on Clint's many other, better films. Plus there's a lot of Ann Arbor talk because Jake's dad is from there too. Great ep, check it out or we'll steal your car! Topics include: doing drugs in class, ROMEO MUST DIE, Jake tries to make the case that this could have been a remake of TOKYO STORY, hamburger pizza, ping-pong humiliation, 8 MILE, star Bee Vang's 2021 op-ed about the film's contribution to anti-Asian racism, going from gamer to racer, and more! Author of the book Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah Kathy Iandoli returns to Pop Pantheon to unpack the far too short career of one of the most exciting pop recording artists of her generation, Aaliyah. Kathy and Louie discuss Aaliyah's upbringing in Detroit, her connection to soul legend Gladys Knight and how she came to create 1994's Age Ain't Nothing But a Number with R. Kelly, a convicted sexual predator who married her illegally as a teen. Then they examine one of the most forward-thinking pieces of R&B futurism ever produced, 1996's One in a Million, a collaboration largely with innovative songwriting and production duo Timbaland and Missy Elliott, which is widely considered one of the best albums of the ‘90s. Next, they dissect Aaliyah's showcase of triple-threat talent in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned, her thrilling soundtrack songs, "Are You That Somebody" and "Try Again,” the blend of R&B traditionalism and avant garde genre experiments on Aaliyah's 2001's self-titled album, released just one month before her untimely death and how her early passing as impacted her legacy. Finally, they rank Aaliyah in the official Pop Pantheon.Buy Kathy's Book Baby Girl: Better Known as AaliyahListen to Pop Pantheon's Aaliyah Essentials PlaylistJoin Pop Pantheon: All Access, Our Patreon Channel, for Exclusive Content and MoreCome to Gorgeous Gorgeous LA on November 10Come to Gorgeous Gorgeous X Who? Speaking today with Adam Frakes-Sime of UK supergroup, Hellblind, was a wonderful experience for me. The joy of his character came out in proportions I was not expecting from a man who makes 'those' sounds. It was as eye opening as it was ear numbing. Adam gave me some insight into his life before Hellblind, how the band ultimately got together, and how they plan on taking the planet by storm, one stage at a time. You may not know the name, but you know the bands from whence they came, namely, Pitchshifter and Romeo Must Die. Adam and I had a great time, and as an aside, his accent is amazing.
