Clara Harris, may be familiar to you as she was my guest, in what seems like ages ago, for Episode 20.   She is an actor, writer, and artist educator with over two decades' of experience on stage, screen and behind the mic in the world of audio drama & as a fellow podcaster and voice actor.   She recently returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; the world's largest arts & media festival where she produced and performed her solo show, This Moment in America, a live recorded audio drama and sonic collage of the American psyche.  Clara makes This Moment in America workshops and live performances available for touring here in the U.S. She is also the creative force behind Swamp Witch Studio and producer of its audio drama podcast, Night Owl Theater.  My other guest, Sandy Maxx, is joining 19Stories for the first time and is definitely giving this host a run for her money as she is a multimedia broadcast professional with extensive experience in radio, television, and content creation. She's the  two-time Emmy-nominated and award winning host and producer of The Arts Page, which airs on Milwaukee PBS and  is now in its 10th season.  Sandy spends her afternoons on the air at 96.5 WKLH-FM and is involved in a variety of live event productions.  As a fellow podcaster, she hosts ‘Downton Blabbey; a podcast for Downton Abbey fans to share all things Downton.  Sandy is an arts enthusiast who believes in the power of creativity to connect people, build community and create important conversations of which Sandy has hosted 1,000's of during her illustrious career. Several of these conversations happened during her jaunt across the pond to the Edinbrugh Fringe Festival to attend This Moment in America and to also meet up with her life-long friend Vince Gatten to chat about his starring role in the show The Golfer.  Then as any self described “incurable Anglophile” would do, she and Clara headed over to Highclere Castle for a 1920s-themed cocktail party before landing in London, England just as the passing of Queen Elizabeth was announced. Although this was a different kind of story for Sandy, she seized this historic moment and reached back to her audience stateside via a live report from Buckingham Palace with the production expertise of Clara Harris as her producer. Listen in as these two dynamic women share about their individual projects and their most recent trips to the UK, performing and attending at The Fringe Festival and being in London during the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. This week, we welcome back David from the fog of San Francisco. With his return, there is the promise of illegal sailing, and of a game of chicken to see who will introduce the pod episode. During banter, Lindsay, David, and Elisabeth discuss the power of film—specifically documentary film, to inform and evoke-- empathy? Hopefully. Santana joins the crew around 12:15, to reflect on her trajectory being made as a filmmaker in Milwaukee. Shaped as a young person by the film Friday, starring Ice Cube, and a pivotal career fair in middle school (or, was it a dream?), Santana has gone to work at 371 Productions and The League. In early days in filmmaking, she was part of Strive Media, and attended UW- Platteville, where she boldly decided to make a documentary film as an independent project, without much experience. Though her school did not have a film program, over the years, they began to expand their offerings to include a minor in film studies. Through trial and error, and support from pivotal instructors, Santana was able to complete her first documentary film as a Sophomore—exploring the process “for the love of it.” After graduation, she found her way to an internship at 371 Productions, and worked towards a co-producer credit on When Claude Got Shot. Now that she's “in it” professionally, she's trying out different roles, embracing humor and lightness, as well as the setting of Milwaukee as inspiration for fiction work, while she supports the completion of When Claude Got Shot. Meanwhile, she's trusting a higher power to help her navigate next steps. In the course the interview, Santana is asked the question she's long imagined being asked in an interview, and reflects on throwing herself a red carpet premiere party, and instituting film tax incentives program to encourage film production in Milwaukee. Through her work, Santana hopes to be part of effecting social change, showcasing a different view of Milwaukee to the wider world, and raising awareness of the complexity of gun violence through inviting viewers to see more deeply into the layers and lives of those touched by acts of gun violence. Santana is aligned with Imagine's hope and wish to explore how to help filmmakers better realize their visions in this city, while contributing to a wider, meaningful economic impact. "I'm not gonna' be fixing these homes, Imma be owning 'em." For producer Alexandria Mack, her earliest understanding of ownership as a means of wealth building came from her father. With less than 7 percent of Black Milwaukeeans owning their homes, real estate professionals like Tia Cannon are working to help this demographic get their slice of the American pie while securing a legacy for their families along the way. To see video of one of Cannon's latest redevelopment projects, check out this segment that aired on Milwaukee PBS show "Black Nouveau."
