In this episode of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast, we dive into upland bird hunting with Edgar Castillo—hunter, writer, and retired law enforcement officer. Edgar shares his unique background, how a neighbor introduced him and his father to hunting, and what led him to dedicate his outdoor life to chasing birds. We explore his favorite upland hunting destinations, the gear he never leaves behind, and his journey into outdoor writing. Plus, we discuss the critical role of public lands and conservation in keeping these adventures alive for future generations. Get ready for an inspiring and adventure-filled conversation with Edgar Castillo! Show Notes Huntsbirdz Kansas Bird Hunting United States Marine Corps What Happened: "When I first moved to the U.S. from Guatemala, hunting wasn't even a concept in my world. My family didn't do it. My dad didn't do it. It just wasn't a thing. But then our neighbor, Tom, took my dad under his wing and introduced him to the world of hunting—first waterfowl, then upland game. I, of course, tagged along, eager to be part of whatever my dad was doing. Everything was going great until one fateful day when Tom handed my dad some venison. My dad took one bite… and got violently sick. Not once, not twice, but every time he ate deer meat. Turns out, he was allergic to venison. That was it—deer hunting was officially off the table for our family. My dad stuck to birds, and so did I. Looking back, I could've ventured into hunting big game on my own. But I know myself—I go all in when I commit to something. If I started deer hunting, I'd be up to my ears in gear, obsessively tracking seasons and probably planning elk hunts across the country. So, I made a choice: stick to what I love, where the adventure is just as thrilling, and where I don't have to explain to my wife why I need a new deep freezer." Principle: Sometimes, the best decisions come from knowing your limits. It's easy to get caught up in the idea of doing everything—whether it's hunting, business, or life in general. But true mastery (and real joy) comes from focusing on what you truly love and getting really, really good at it. Transition: Too many people try to do it all. They think more = better, whether it's hunting, hobbies, or even running a business. But that's not always the case. The reality? Spreading yourself too thin often means never truly excelling at anything. That's Why: That's why, in this episode of The Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast, I sat down with Edgar Castillo to talk about how he found his niche in upland hunting, why he never strayed into big game, and how his passion for storytelling and conservation led him to an unexpected writing career. If you've ever struggled with choosing your lane—or wondered how to make the most of the one you're in—you'll love this conversation. Call to Action: If you've ever felt like you're chasing too many things at once, this episode is for you. Learn how to find joy, adventure, and mastery in one passion—and how focusing can actually open up even bigger opportunities. “I've known Nate Schweber going on 20 years now, we've been colleagues, friends, and even co-authors. I can say without a doubt that he is one of the hardest working reporters I've ever met, he has a keen eye for detail, enjoys a good drink, and knows how to rock with the best of them.  He's a raconteur, with endless curiosity and compassion, and great passion. My life is better because I know him.  His chords are familiar to listeners of this show as it has opened up every episode since we started, and was even part of the old After Two Beers show I did for All About Beer. We've been to breweries and crime scenes together, we've had adventures and even wrote a book together – Indiana Breweries – which was released in 2011 and has since gone on to sell tens of copies.  He lives in Brooklyn these days, but he grew up in Missoula, Montana and has always had a passion for outdoor reporting. A previous book, Fly Fishing Yellowstone is a must for any angler looking for the story of trout in the historic park, not just the fish but tales of the streams and its history.  His latest book tells a remarkable story about conservation, activism, and journalism, with belts of sold drinking thrown in here and again. It's called This America of Ours: Bernard and Avis DeVoto and the Forgotten Fight to Save the Wild. It was published on July 5, 2022 and the paperback is out now. It has also the book won the High Plains Book Award, and received the first place book award from the Outdoor Writers Association of America. The book tells the story of a husband and wife team that took on special interests and politicians like Joe McCarthy and worked to protect land that should have been protected, and along the way, they strike up a friendship with a woman who would alter the course of cooking in America.  It's suspenseful, meticulously researched, frightening with bits of levity, and historically important with mirrors to today. It is one of the most engaging books I've read in a long time, and I'm not just saying all of this because he showed up at my house with a bottle of gin.  But, of course, that's where we start.” -John HollThis Episode is Sponsored By:ShopifyShopify's already taken the cash register online, helping millions sell billions around the world. It's probably one of the most spectacular rivers we have in Ireland for scenery and beauty. It's absolutely stunning, but the whole community was kind of based around the river, and fly fishing was huge in that community. But my dad and all his brothers would've been a big fly fishermen and big competition anglers back in the day when I was only a wee boy. Tell us about the shop We sell a whole shebang. Whatever you need for fly fishing or fly tying we got it. If we haven't got it we'll, we get it. But we do have one motto. I've always kind of built the business on a personal thing that if I'm not gonna use itself, there's a good chance I'm not gonna stock it. You know, we're very particular about what we stock in the shop. We do have a range from all over the world. The Inspiration for Piscari Fly It was a simple thing, I was really struggling on getting high-quality tungsten beads over here in Ireland. Here you're buying 'em from here and there and they were Ok. They were coming in different sizes, different colors, different coats, and different weights. And it was really frustrating for me as a Competition Tyer. Sort of on the second time around that. So, I contacted some Tungsten bead companies in China and you know, over a six-month to a year period, we kinda came up with our own chunks of beads and I had to buy 'em in such large bulk that it made sense just to start selling some and, it just started from there and it just built and built and built. What's your favorite piece of gear under a hundred dollars? Skafars indicator wax One of the other things that I bought that I would not fish without is my knee pads. A good set of knee pads or shin guards, they have saved my life so many times. And you can find em here for 50 euros. Follow up with Peter check us out at Piscari fly is the main handle for everyone. So if you put in piscari fly on your Facebook or your Twitter or your Instagram or anything like that, it'll bring you to us. Or just go straight to our website www.pescarifly.com and take a look around. Brad sat on a panel discussion, where he spoke about Regenerative Agriculture and Ecosystem/Wildlife conservation.Aha MomentI got into land ownership through hunting. I wanted to do better management than those managing the land where I was hunting. I gradually progressed into regenerative agriculture over half a dozen years. Our guest today on the Outdoor Adventure Series is Terry Creekmore. Terry is a Livermore, Colorado-based Outdoor Enthusiast, Conservationist, and Freelance Outdoor Adventure Writer. He served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and then spent 36 years specializing in wildlife diseases for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wyoming Game and Fish. Terry is also a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA). Aha Moment -- A few of us who worked for the Wyoming Game and Fish were hosting an elk hunt for veterans; wall tents, and horses when the game warden rode into camp. He dismounted, ate a plate of red beans and rice, then climbed back up in the saddle and headed upcountry, pack horse in tow, to spend the week in the back of beyond. To those of us in the Game and Fish, it was nothing extraordinary, business as usual, kind of like a banker working a mortgage, but those vets all stared in awe. It was then I realized I was part of something special, something that has long since vanished from most of our world. Megan is also an avid hunter that owns five beagles and loves pursuing rabbits, and she also shot her first archery deer last season. She shares the exciting story of the hunt during the show. Offshore, inshore, fly, bait, spin, you name it - he taught it. But was he a great fisherman? Who cares, he was a determined guy that had great intentions and succeeded with his quests. Mark is the director emeritus of the Billfish foundation and a past president of the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Sosin received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Outdoor Writers Association and has been inducted into four Hall of Fames including the Freshwater Hall of Fame and the International Game Fish Hall of Fame.
