It's happening. No, this isn't a dream. We can't contain our excitement any longer. We have two HUGE reasons to celebrate. It's Maed in India's 300th episode!!! We're celebrating this milestone with a band that's been the soundtrack of the lives of college students through the late 90s and early 2000s. Mae has the iconic alt rock band Zero in the studio to celebrate 300 episodes of the show! And she's even brought an old friend along with her too - Music Journalist, Co-founder of erstwhile NH7.in, Head of Red Bull Media House India, and #1 Zero superfan – Arjun S Ravi. They chat to Sidd, Warren, Bobby and Rajeev about their first i-Rock, about how these Dadar boys know each other, what their songs are really about (kinda) and how Zero once almost broke up. You also get to hear about how they got paid for a gig in sandwiches, a Europe tour that never happened because they weren't “Indian enough”, using underwear as a pop filter, Buffy The Vampire slayer, leather chaps, and a whole lot more. You'll also get to hear them perform a song that they've never recorded before right here on Maed in India. Song List: Mariachi (01:44 - 06:32) Wish (34:09 - 38:50) Take Me Away (1:10:18 - 1:15:19) Zero is: Rajeev Talwar on Vocals Warren Mendonsa on Guitars Girish 'Bobby' Talwar on Bass Sidd Coutto on Drums Follow Zero: Instagram @whatmezero Facebook @whatmezero Twitter @whatmezero Come be our friend: Facebook @maedinindia Instagram @maedinindia Twitter @maedinindia CREDITS: Hosts: Mae Mariyam Thomas & Arjun S Ravi Instagram: @maemariyam & @arjun_s_ravi Twitter: @maebemaebe & @arjun_s_ravi Sound Editing & Additional engineering by: Lakshman Parsuram Episode Mixed & Mastered by: Kartik Kulkarni Producers: Shaun Fanthome and Husein Haveliwala Artwork: Alika Gupta Recording Engineers: Ashyar Balsara & Aria Nanji Music Mixed by: Jehangir Jehangir & Warren Mendonsa Recorded at Island City Studios

Abhinit Tiwari is a designer and a programmer who has been building digital products for past 14 years. He is currently Heading the design team at Gojek. He founded Leftshift technologies where in he built products for BookMyShow, Airtel, Citrus, NH7 and many more. Leftshift was then acquired in 2016 by GO-JEK Indonesia. For those are not aware of Gojek is, it is Southeast Asia’s leading on-demand, multi-service tech platform providing access to a wide range of services including transport, payments, food delivery, logistics, and many more. Abhinit is here with us today to share his insights and learnings while building Asphalt; Gojek’s design system; What is a design system? How is it different from a brand guidelines or Sticker sheet or pattern library or Front end framework? How did the name Asphalt come about? What is the story behind “Salam satu aspal”? Is asphalt based on Brad Frost atomic theory? Are there any other such theories? Did you hunt for more such theories? Why did you feel the need of building a design system? What were the challenges before that triggered it? What are building blocks of Asphalt? How long did it take to build it and what was the strategy before taking it on? It is generally said that design system is a breathing document so when do you take out the ventilator? There have also been articles strongly recommending that it is not a side gig but a full time investment & commitment. How would you respond to that? One important myth associated with Design Systems is that it kills creatively. We have to work in a lot of constraints - How do you look at it? How big is the team that handles Asphalt and how deeply front end is involved in this ongoing vertical? How big or small this team should be for a fast growing startup? Can you tell us the importance of making all organisms and molecules to be living things with code and not just static sketch or figma files? Can you briefly tell us how did you build it? What were the key milestones and checks which gave the confidence of you going in the right direction? What was the process of validating your components to be modular and scalable? Can you share details of any medium size project which got shipped effortlessly at Gojek because of Asphalt? How critical is a buy-in from the top management and how did you go about doing it? You can follow Abhinit on Twitter @abhinitial and me on @nimkarkedar and Audiogyan on @audiogyan Oh, BTW, Gojek is hiring. Visit Gojek.io to know more.
Karnivool are somewhat of a musical enigma. With an output of albums that only just surpasses one every half-decade, the band has relied solely on the quality of their music and the intensity of their live performances rather than constant turnover and it is a testament to their endurance that they remain firmly entrenched amongst the countries premier bands. With a string of shows this weekend as part of the Good Things Festival, guitarist Mark 'Hoss' Hosking stresses that the band is almost aching to get amongst their diehard fans once more."You can expect our usual shenanigans as a band", he laughed. "Lots of hectic, loud and rambunctious music and generally just running around the stage fairly flamboyantly - we're not the most manliest of men - but we try to compensate on that with the music a bit (laughs) and try to have a lot of fun. We've been looking forward to this festival for a long time, to be honest. It's a cracking festival and we had great fun there last year just wandering around and there are some really good humans associated with it so we can't wait".With a stopover in Hobart en route to Melbourne for what must be the bands only failure to sell out a headlining show this century, Hoss concedes the burden of expectation could finally be starting to take its toll."We're devastated that it hasn't sold out", he cried, tongue firmly planted in cheek. "We're ready to call it quits and put in our letters of resignation. The honour is broken; we are no longer an honourable band - although I guess now we can tell people that we haven't sold out... so that's nice (laughs). It might give back a bit of credibility to the band"!In the full interview Hoss tells of the difficulties in condensing their full stage production into a festival environment, their recent performance at NH7 in India, the intensity of their live shows, the bands general apathy when it comes to rehearsal and how it can actually be a good thing, the plan to re-release their three albums on vinyl, new music and why it takes so long to create, the possibility of new music being rolled out this weekend and more.
What is a sub-culture? Why does everyone want to be a part of it? How does it work as an ecosystem? On this episode of Advertising is Dead, host Varun Duggirala is joined by Co-Founders of 4/4 Experiences, Himanshu Vaswani and Nikhil Udupa. They discuss their journey into music, along with the emergence and growth of subculture around content. Soulspace (Bangalore, India) Soulspace distances himself with more exploratory tempos and an experimental beat-maker approach, of which cities like Los Angeles or London are particularly well known for, yet the electronica producer is worlds apart. Hailing from Bangalore, India he’s capable of shifting moods from downtempo electronica to a more dance-floor friendly approach of 4/4 summertime grooves with his signature melodic & soulful sounds. With the country's most anticipated music festival coming up in a couple of weeks (Dec 8-10), we thought now would be the perfect time to re-broadcast an episode we did this time last year: An interview with Vijay Nair of OML Entertainment, the company that runs the NH7 Weekender. It's a fascinating conversation that talks about what it takes to put together a music festival and the independent music scene. There are hilarious anecdotes from Vijay's earlier days when he used to manage Pentagram and their trip to Estonia (!). If you're a fan of OML's work, or music festivals, or entrepreneurship, you'll enjoy this chat! The Mumbai based recording engineer, drummer and music producer is probably best known for his staggeringly beautiful music as one half of Nicholson. Most of Ramanna’s time, however, is spent helping other people make music at Cotton Press Studios, which he founded with the Something Relevant members in 2012. Ro. has been in the business of music for close to a decade now, composing, producing, mixing and mastering music for television, film, radio, as well as independent musicians. On top of that, he’s currently on Nicholson’s first full-length album (after two powerful and very well released EPs) after having performed at festivals including Alchemy at Southbank Centre in London, The Great Escape festival in Brighton, NH7, Magnetic Fields and more. The coming year will also see a release with his newest independent collaborative project, Doe - with singer-songwriter Divya Lewis and guitarist Amandeep Singh. With a resume as expansive and accomplished as his, we thought it was time we got an insight into the music that influences him. Ro. goes old skool for mix #108, kicking it off with some smooth R&B from Erykah Badu before moving on to Thundercat’s highly talked about ode to his cat in ‘Tron Song’ (apologies in advance for the link to its video) and some neo-soul from Melbourne neo-soul outfit Hiatus Kaiyote. The second half includes some classic Dilla and more experimental sounds from Prefuse 73.
